The Bargers recently finished acomplete renovation of the bar, whichfeatures eight top beers and a largeassortment of liquor, as well as frozenpizzas and basic bar food.

The renovation made updates to theinside and outside of the bar, Debbiesaid. The two are also constantly

adding new drinks and adding twiststo old ones. “We have great dailyspecials, cold beer and outstandingservice,” Terry said. “We have livemusic every Friday night.”

The bar sponsors a sprint car teamat Knoxville, as well as an annual golftournament for Kiya Koda. They arealso the starting point for the AmberRide and other charity events.

But mostly, they take care of theircustomers. “I think we’ve done a goodjob of making people feel welcome,”Terry said.

The outgoing McConnell hasowned the studio since 1984. Hepurchased the business from BobEaton, who had owned the businesssince 1948. McConnell worked forEaton for a year before taking overthe studio.

Things have changed a great dealsince he bought the business,McConnell said — from film to digitaland much more. He focuses onfamilies, senior pictures and portraits

of kids either in the studio or at homeor on a special location. He alsophotographs events like the statedance competition, reunions anddance studio recitals.

McConnell’s biggest claim to fameis serving as the personalphotographer for the Iowa Court ofAppeals and the governor.

The key to his business’ success isstaying on top of the changes in thephotography business, he said. “We’realways looking for new products tooffer our customers, and new eventsto shoot,” he said. His favorite part ofthe business is working with peopleand simply enjoying the art ofphotography.

The Dance Factory has beenteaching Indianola dancers theart of dance since 1984, said

Crouse Cafe has been focused onserving a good quality meal at afair price since Bob and Cleo

Crouse launched the family restaurant inLeon, in 1946. It’s on its third location andthird set of owners, with John andRhonda Crouse running it since 1991.

For the Crouses, two things make theirrestaurant successful. First, homemadefood. “The tenderloins, onion rings,mashed potatoes, pies and most entreesare all homemade,” said Rhonda Crouse.“We have a calendar of specials thatpeople use to decide what day they wantto eat here.”

Second, having family involved in theoperation. “They know how therestaurant has been run over the years,and it is in their blood,” she said.“Customers like seeing the ownersinvolved and family seems to reallycare.”

It has been less than a year sinceowner Rachel Hall has openedIndianola Glass Creations last

October, and in that time her businesshas made quite a splash, securingthree Best of Warren County titles asthe best place to find a gift, bestspecialty business and the best keptsecret.

“We make very unique pieces. Wetry to make it so no two pieces are thesame,” Hall said.

“I think people like that what theyare getting is one of a kind, and alsoour prices are very reasonable.”

Located at 119 N. Buxton St. on thewest side of The Square, IndianolaGlass Creations is more than just aunique gift store. It also offers classesand sells the supplies for creatingstained glass, fused glass and jewelry.

to make earrings and necklaces, andpicture frames from either stainedglass or fused glass,” Hall said.

Hall said her favorite part of thebusiness has been connecting with hercustomers.

“We are just one of three shops inIowa with that recognition,” Davisonadded. Shops are chosen for the honorbased on community feedback, toolsand equipment, training, and having toplevel ASE certifications for its staff.

Over the next few years, Davisonsaid he would like to look at expandingto multiple locations around bothWarren and Polk counties. In themeantime, he’s focusing on living themotto — good service never goes out ofstyle.

The Green Acres Garden Centergot its start seven years ago,when owner Michelle Holland

suggested to her husband, Rob, that theyput a “little” garden center on a farmfield next to their home. Green Acresopened in the spring of 2006 with onegreenhouse and one shade structure.

Today, Rob has added two moregreenhouses, another shade structure,cleared space for a huge tree field withpot-in-pot production, created automatedwatering zones, expanded the parking lotand recently built concrete bins that holdmulch, compost and rock.

Michelle says the family is proud thatit grows many of its own plants. “We fireup the greenhouses in February andbegin growing perennials, annuals and

baskets,” she said. Green Acres has morethan 600 fruit trees, a wide selection ofshade and ornamental trees, and carries alarge selection of shrubs, perennials,annuals and more than 5,000 hosta plantsin hundreds of varieties.

Green Acres is a family-ownedbusiness with every member of thefamily pitching in his or her skills. Butthe biggest key to its success is the hardwork Rob has put in, said Michelle. “Ithink we have been successful becauseRob has put his heart and soul into it,”she said. “When you are passionate aboutwhat you are doing and have a vision ofwhat you want to become, people notice,come back and spread the word. For thatwe are thankful.”
