Metro Detroit manufacturerscan benefit from a new grant pro-gram designed to reduce trainingcosts and increase the number ofapprentices in the Michigan Ad-vanced Technician Training pro-gram.

The Michigan Talent Invest-ment Agency (TIA) is hostinga webinar at 3 p.m. Thurs-day, Jan. 26, to explain how the

program benefits manufactur-ers.

“Michigan employers have theopportunity to invest in the nextgeneration of skilled techniciansby offering training designed tomeet their company’s uniqueneeds,” said TIA Director WandaM. Stokes.

“The cutting-edge MAT2 ap-prenticeship program has aproven track record of success, including providing a wide arrayof employer benefits such as in-creased productivity and knowl-edge transfer, a skilled talentpipeline and enhanced retention.”

The MAT2 Employer TrainingGrants are $5,000 per studentand are for employers who havestudents enrolled at a MAT2 col-lege, which in southeast Michi-gan are Oakland Community Col-lege and Henry Ford College. Em-ployers must also register their

To make the MAT2 grant appli-cation process easier, businessservices staff with local Michigan

Works! agencies that partnerwith employers and will submitgrant applications to the TIA ontheir behalf. Applications forMAT2 Grants may be submittedthrough Sept. 30, 2017.

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors will pay the federal govern-ment a $1 million civil penaltyfor violating accounting rules in-volving the company’s deadly ig-nition switch scandal.

The penalty, announced Jan.19 as a settlement with the U.S.Securities and Exchange Com-mission, is for failing to have ac-counting controls in place to de-termine the potential for a recalland estimate the possible loss.

GM said it consented to anSEC cease-and-desist order with-out admitting or denying anywrongdoing.

The order found that GM per-sonnel knew in the spring of2012 that the switches were asafety issue but failed to tell ac-countants until November of2013.

Because of that, for at least 18months, accountants didn’tproperly evaluate whether therewould be a recall or the potentiallosses from the scandal, theagency said.

“Internal accounting controlsat General Motors failed to con-sider relevant accounting guid-ance when it came to consider-ing disclosure of potential vehi-cle recalls,” Andrew Calamari, di-rector of the SEC’s New York re-gional office, said in a statement.

General Motors said in a state-ment that since the ignitionswitch problem, it has reorgan-ized vehicle engineering teamsfor greater accountability andset up a new vehicle safety or-ganization.

Safety, said Buick spokesmanStuart Fowle, is one of the topthree reasons people buy Buicks, and that’s good news for the2017 LaCrosse.

Buick’s new 2017 LaCrosseflagship sedan has earned thefederal government’s NationalHighway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration’s (NHTSA) highest five-star Overall Vehicle Score forsafety rating, giving Buick aNHTSA five-star sweep across itsentire tested lineup of premiumvehicles for the third consecu-tive year, said GM spokesmanMichael Ofiara.

Buick was one of only twobrands in the industry to earn afive-star Overall Vehicle Score forsafety ratings on every modelwith its 2015 product line, andevery Buick vehicle tested sincehas been rated at this highestlevel, Ofiara said.

In 2016, four new or significant-ly enhanced Buick vehicles werelaunched in the U.S., and eachone earned NHTSA’s five-starOverall Vehicle Score for safetyratings – including the Cascada, which is the first convertible for2017 with a five-star Overall Vehi-cle Score, Ofiara said.

“We know safety is top-of-mindfor buyers when shopping fornew vehicles, and the recent rat-ings by NHTSA showcase ourbrand’s dedication to providingour customers with safe, reliabletransportation,” said DuncanAldred, vice president of GlobalBuick Sales, Service and Market-ing.

“We’ve launched four new ve-hicles in 2016 and we are ex-tremely proud to continue to of-fer a lineup of award-winning ve-hicles that have NHTSA five-starOverall Vehicle Score ratingsacross the board.”

On sale since August 2016, the2017 LaCrosse is longer, lowerand wider than the previous gen-eration, Aldred said.

The car’s safety, handling andefficiency benefit from its ad-vanced structure, thanks to theuse of stronger, lighter press-hardened and high-strengthsteels.

“LaCrosse is a perfect blend ofsophisticated technologies, advanced safety systems andauthentic craftsmanship andcontinues to be Buick’s flagshipsedan,” Aldred said.

And the Buick lineup offers ahost of innovative safety fea-tures, including the company’spatented Safety Alert Seat, whichprovides alerts to the driver us-ing haptic seat vibrations, Aldredsaid. The 2017 Enclave also of-fers the segment’s only front-cen-ter air bag, delivering enhancedprotection to front passengers inside collisions.

The new LaCrosse is the firstBuick vehicle hitting the market-place that offers GM’s FrontPedestrian Braking safety fea-ture.

This is a feature that helps toprovide peace of mind for thoseinside the car and enhanced safe-ty for those outside of the car,Ofiara said.

The Regal 5-Star Overall Vehi-cle Score applies to vehicleswithout optional rear seat-mounted side-impact airbagsand Envision 5-Star Overall Vehi-cle Score applies to vehicles withall-wheel drive, Ofiara said.

The federal government’s 5-Star Safety Ratings for automo-biles are part of the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration’s New Car AssessmentProgram (www.SaferCar.gov),Ofiara said.

put into action,” Krell said.GM’s announcement is part of

the company’s increased focuson overall efficiency over the lastfour years, Barra said. With astrategy to streamline and sim-plify its operations and grow itsbusiness, GM has created 25,000jobs in the U.S. − approximately19,000 engineering, IT and pro-fessional jobs and 6,000 hourlymanufacturing jobs – and addednearly $3 billion in annual wagesand benefits to the U.S. economyover that period. At the same time, GM reduced

more than 15,000 positions outsidethe U.S., bringing most of thosejobs to America, Barra said. Duringthat period, the company movedfrom 90 percent of its IT work be-ing outsourced to an insourcedU.S.-based model.“We will continue our commit-

ment to driving a more efficientbusiness,” said Barra, “as shownby our insourcing of more than6,000 IT jobs that were formerlyoutside the U.S., streamlining ourengineering operations from sev-en to three, with the core engi-neering center being in Warren,Michigan, and building on our mo-mentum at GM Financial and in ad-vanced technologies. Thesemoves, and others, are expected toresult in more than 5,000 new jobsin the U.S. over the next few years.”GM has also been facilitating

its supplier base to do the same,Bara said. The company hasbeen executing a strategy to cre-ate supplier parks adjacent to itsU.S. manufacturing sites (alreadyaccomplished at GM’s Fairfax As-sembly Plant in Kansas, SpringHill Assembly Plant in Ten-nessee, Fort Wayne AssemblyPlant in Indiana, and Lordstown

Assembly Plant in Ohio), and willcontinue to expand this effort, she said.Supplier parks locating near

assembly plants result in signifi-cant savings from reduced trans-portation costs, higher qualitycommunications and continuousimprovement activities as suppli-ers are located closer to the finalassembly location, Barra said.In addition, GM is confirming

that another supplier has com-mitted to make components forGM’s next-generation full-sizepickup trucks in Michigan, mov-ing 100 supplier jobs from Mexi-co to the U.S.

in this hyper-competitive envi-ronment. We commend thosethat are working to improvetheir efforts in this area.”GM was the fastest-growing

full-line automaker in 2016 basedon retail market share, whichwas up 0.5 percentage points toan estimated 16.8 percent, Cainsaid. Chevrolet continues to bethe U.S. automotive industry’sfastest-growing brand, he said, with retail market share up near-ly 1 point in the past two yearsto 11.1 percent. The Chevrolet Volt had its best

sales year ever in 2016, with de-liveries up 61 percent versus 2015.The GMC Yukon XL saw deliveriesincrease 18 percent in 2016, withmore than 60 percent of cus-tomers purchasing Denali models.Cadillac is also growing rapid-

GM Diversity Communications.“Many of them had not been

exposed to automotive journal-ism, had never been to Detroit orseen snow. But they brought withthem the right amount of curiosi-ty required to cover an event asmassive and complex as theNorth American InternationalAuto Show and they did so withgrit and class.”

One student demonstratedthat drive by chasing a face-to-face interview with GM Chairmanand CEO Mary Barra on the autoshow floor, Bauza said.

Another coaxed GM NorthAmerica President Alan Batey in-to a video that won the pro-gram’s top prize: an all-expense-paid trip to a national journalismconference.

Students Rushawn Walters andNia Muhammad, both of HowardUniversity, and Sarah Rahal, ofWayne State University, won theprize with “Jammin’ with GM,” avideo story told through carpoolkaraoke, focusing on the newChevrolet Cruze and technolo-gies such as Apple Car Play, An-droid Auto, Teen Driver, RearSeat Reminder and the car’s fueleconomy.

“As an aspiring student jour-nalist from Detroit, getting theopportunity to learn more aboutwhat’s in my backyard was apriceless gift,” said Rahal.

“This program gave me a net-work of people that are profi-cient in the industry and theknowledge to use it in the field.Discover Your Drive allowed meto believe that automotive newsis a possibility for my future.”

The students took part in ajournalism workshop led by RaySuarez, former host of NPR’s Talk

of the Nation, Bauza said. Theyalso heard a panel on the state ofdiversity in newsrooms.

The panel, moderated byaward-winning journalist Ed Gor-don, featured fashion criticMichael Quintanilla, formerly ofthe Los Angeles Times and SanAntonio Express News; politicaljournalist Patricia Guadalupe, acontributing writer to NBC Lati-no; Walter Middlebrook, DetroitNews assistant managing editor;and Salvador Rodriguez, Inc.magazine’s tech reporter.

Students attended news con-ferences and vehicle reveals, ex-plored the auto show floor andinterviewed auto experts. Theprofessional journalists men-tored the students and helpedthem produce news stories andpresentations. The program end-ed with an awards ceremony atthe GM Heritage Center in Ster-ling Heights.

“As a diversity and businessreporter, it’s really great to seeGM put its money and weight be-hind discovering and helpingyoung journalists of diversebackgrounds get started withtheir careers,” said Inc.’s Ro-driguez, also a mentor.

Quintanilla, a returning mentorwhose team won last year, saysnews groups need to take note.

“This is the most original expe-rience for college students thatencourages them to consider au-tomotive journalism while alsopromoting diversity in news-rooms,” he said.

“By diverse, I mean not only di-versity in one’s ethnicity but alsoin ideas and a promise fromeveryone involved to protectand uphold journalism’s exis-tence and the profession’s com-mitment to tell accurate and hon-est stories.”
