Tell that to the folks at GM’s Orion Assembly Plant. They took it on themselves to help out folks who get cold – really cold – when the winter weather hits the area. Adam Lassen is Manufacturing Engineering director at the site and is also in charge of this year’s Orion Christmas Coat Drive. “We had a similar coat drive last year,” Lassen said. “It was such a success that we decided to do it again this year.” The goal, Lassen said, is to help provide “slightly used” coats to people who are using the services of the Baldwin Cen- ter, a homeless shelter headquar- tered in Pontiac. “The idea is for people to donate coats,” Lassen said. “The drive was finished at the end of November. In Michigan, said Chrysler spokesperson Kevin Frazier, em- ployee donations – everything from canned fruit and vegetables to cranberry sauce, stuffing and frozen turkeys purchased by The Chrysler Foundation – filled 35 pallets, enough food for more than 27,000 meals for families in Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. “In southeast Michigan, more than 707,000 people are food- insecure and despite a recover- ing economy, many working families are still having trouble making ends meet,” said Gerry Brisson, president of Gleaners. “This much-needed support from Chrysler Group’s Thanks- giving Food Drive will help Glean- ers ease the burden for many families this holiday season.” “It takes 60 volunteers to run the pantry each day,” said Karla Gardner, community develop- ment/donor relations director of the Hope Center in Macomb. “The support of Chrysler Group volunteers helps Hope Center keep costs down (92 cents of every dollar donated goes to actual client programs). “But our partnership also con- tinues to raise awareness about the tremendous need in Macomb County.” Hope Center feeds nearly 500 households each week. “Even in an affluent place like Oakland County,” said Priscilla Perkins, chief development offi- cer of the Lighthouse of Oakland County, “we still have more than 118,000 people living below the federal poverty level. “The Chrysler Group’s ongoing Chrysler Employees Donate to Food Banks As part of Ford Motor Compa- ny’s expanded hunger relief ef- forts this year, the Dearborn automaker has donated a new truck to The Salvation Army’s Bed & Bread Club. The E-350, which joined the club last week, will help serve 5,000 meals a day to needy peo- ple in Detroit. The vehicle joins the Bed & Bread fleet that provides a sand- wich, fruit, beverage, soup and snack to city neighborhoods, said Ford spokesperson Todd Nissen. The Salvation Army’s Detroit Bed & Bread program is the largest one in the country. It was a look at how Chevrolet could take the all-new midsize truck’s off-road capability to the next level, said GM spokesperson Otie McKinley. It also showcases the new 2.8L Duramax diesel en- gine that will arrive in the Col- orado lineup later next year. “The aggressively styled con- cept builds on the capabilities of the production Colorado Z71 and advances the legacy of Chevro- let’s previous ZR2 production models,” McKinley said. Colorado Marketing Manager Tony Johnson added, “From the bold stance to the trail-ready special equipment, the Colorado ZR2 is all about the fun of driving where the pavement ends – and doing it in characteristic Chevy style. “Chevrolet has a heritage of the ZR2 representing the ulti- mate in production-based off- road capability, and we’ll gauge the public’s interest in this con- cept as we continue to explore the possibilities for the all-new Colorado.” The Colorado ZR2’s stance is four inches wider than a produc- tion Colorado Z71, Johnson said, with features including new front and rear fascias designed to in- crease approach and departure angles when driving off-road. Ground clearance and rough ter- rain are handled with a two-inch lift and integral skid plates, while the wider track helps enhance stability in potentially unstable situations, said Johnson. The Colorado ZR2’s greater ap- proach and departure angles – 30.7 and 22.7 degrees, respective- ly, versus the Z71’s 25/21 degrees – are enabled by new off-road fas- cias that drastically reduce front and rear overhang, Johnson said, adding that the fascias also fea- ture integrated, flip-out alu- minum tow hooks and the front fascia incorporates a built-in winch. “The design of the ZR2 concept is all about functionality,” said Johnson. “It is inspired by the needs for traversing rock-strewn trails, as well as the aesthetics of competi- tion-style vehicles such as pre- runners – with all elements con- tributing to safe, sustainable off- road driving.” The Colorado ZR2 concept’s new 2.8L Duramax diesel packs the power, Johnson said, with an estimated 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm to tackle the toughest trails. The 2.8L Duramax diesel is part of a new, global family of turbo-diesel four-cylinder en- gines designed to deliver more efficient capability, said Johnson, adding that the diesel features a variable-geometry turbocharger for optimal power and efficiency across the rpm band and a bal- ance shaft for greater smooth- ness. “While the ZR2 is a concept truck,” McKinley said, “the 2.8L engine is very real. It is going into every trim level of the 2016 Col- orado pickup next year.” McKinley said that while the ZR2 is a concept truck, great care was taken to make it “real.” “When you talk about concept vehicles, one of two things hap- pens,” McKinley said. “Either the design is so ‘Star Treky,’ so car- toony that the vehicle looks cool, but it’s not taken seriously, or the design is made ‘real’ and people get a sense of where the future is going.” The ZR2 designers, McKinley said, went for the latter. Orion will receive $160 million for tooling and equipment, and Pontiac will receive $40 million for new dies, said Orion plant spokesperson Chris Bonelli. These investments are part of the nearly $300 million in Michi- gan-based investments that GM CEO Mary Barra referenced in a speech at the Detroit Economic Club Oct. 28. “This announcement is a shot in the arm for these two terrific plants known for their teamwork and employee engagement,” said Cathy Clegg, GM North America Manufacturing vice president. “We’re committed to growing our brands and producing the high- est-quality and safest vehicles for our customers.” While no new jobs will be cre- ated by these actions, Clegg said, this announcement brings the total investment in Orion Assem- bly and the Pontiac Metal Center to $775 million since 2010. in the Impala helps protect thetank valve and connection fromcertain side impacts, said GMspokesperson Chad Lyons. Sheetmetal plates on either side of thetank help protect it from looseobjects in the trunk or rear seat.“We designed this system for

those ‘what if’ situations,” saidNichole Kraatz, Impala chief engi-neer. ”The customer shouldn’teven know it’s there. Theyshouldn’t even think about it.CNG should just be another fuelthey use to power their vehicle.”Lyons added, “We wanted to

tell people the story of how wego above and beyond the call ofduty to show that this vehicle issafe.“There are certain safety test-

ing protocols that we are obligedto follow to demonstrate vehiclesafety. But we performed othersafety tests – the bonfire test forexample – that are not mandatedby law.”The bonfire test, Lyons said, is

an industry test where a steadyflame of 800 degrees fahrenheitis placed four inches from thetank. What GM engineers do isadd trunk, backseat and under-body fires to test the pressure re-lease valves on all sides of thetank.These tests, Lyons said, are

performed to show the publicjust how safe this Bi-Fuel Impalais.Bi-fuel vehicles are currently

very popular with fleet opera-tions, Lyons said. There is onlyone passenger vehicle, made byHonda, available to the public.Durability and safety testing at

the tank’s normal operating pres-sure of 3,600 PSI and higher sub-

In order topass the test, the bullet has topass completely through oneside of the tank without exitingout the other side. The goal is tohave the tank maintain the bullethole only as the weak structuralpoint, without rupturing.• Front barrier, side impact

and rear impact crash tests wereconducted on the Bi-Fuel Impala.

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) – Fordsaid Nov. 21 that its new alu-minum-bodied F-150 pickup willget up to 26 mpg on the highway,making it the most fuel-efficientgas-powered full-size pickup.The Ram truck is the current

leader among pickups, getting upto 25 mpg on the highway with agas engine. The Ram gets up to28 mpg with a diesel engine; Forddoesn’t make a diesel version ofthe F-150.Fuel economy is a key selling

point for the new F-150, which isarriving at dealerships thismonth. Ford shaved 700 poundsoff the weight of the truck byswitching the body from steel tolightweight aluminum, a dramat-ic change for the best-selling ve-hicle in the U.S.Some analysts thought the

truck might even top 30 mpgafter Ford’s multi-billion-dollarinvestment to develop and pro-duce it. The final figure metFord’s expectations of a moremodest improvement, and repre-sents 13 percent greater fueleconomy than the current F-150.With gas now averaging $2.84

per gallon, the aluminum F-150will save the average buyer only$100 to $200 a year in fuel costs

the highway with a 2.7-liter Eco-Boost engine, which Ford be-lieves will account for 28 percentof sales of the new truck. The tophighway fuel economy of the cur-rent truck is 23 mpg.The company hopes the new

computer networks, the hackersshowed that, given time, theywould be able to pop the trunkand start the windshield wipers,cut the brakes or lock them up,and even kill the engine.Their motives were not mali-

cious. These hackers worked onbehalf of the U.S. military, whichalong with the auto industry isscrambling to fortify the cyberdefenses of commercially avail-able cars before criminals andeven terrorists penetrate them.“You’re stepping into a rolling

computer now,” said ChrisValasek, who helped catapult carhacking into the public eye whenhe and a partner revealed lastyear they had been able to con-trol a 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010Ford Escape by plugging into aport used by mechanics.These days, when Valasek isn’t

working his day job for a com-puter security firm, he’s seeinghow Bluetooth might offer anentry point.Automakers are betting heavi-

ly that consumers will want notjust the maps and music playlistsof today but also Internet-en-abled vehicles that streammovies and turn dictation intoemail. The federal governmentwants to require cars to sendeach other electronic messageswarning of dangers on the road.In these and other connec-

tions, hackers see opportunity.

There are no publicly knowninstances of a car being comman-deered outside staged tests. Inthose tests, hackers prevail.One was the Defense Depart-

ment-funded assault on a 2012model American-made car, over-seen by computer scientist Kath-leen Fisher.Hackers demonstrated they

could create the electronicequivalent of a skeleton key tounlock the car’s networks. Thatmay take months, Fisher said,but from there it would be “pret-ty easy to package up the smartsand make it available online, per-haps in a black-market type situ-ation.”The project’s goal is more than

just to plug vulnerabilities – it isto reconceive the most criticallines of computer code that con-trol the car in a way that couldmake them invulnerable to someof the major known threats.The model code would be dis-

tributed to automakers, whocould adapt it to their needs.That should take a few moreyears.The industry is participating –

and not waiting.One major association is help-

If there’s one thing ChevroletVolt owners love about theircars, it’s being able to rechargethe battery easily.Evidence of that is a U.S. De-

partment of Energy study thatshows more than 80 percent ofall trips by Volt owners did notuse the range extender, said GMspokesperson Michelle Malcho.“The great thing about the Volt

is that there is no range anxiety,”Malcho said. “It has that gas en-gine that can generate the elec-tricity needed to power the car.”Rather, Malcho said, Volt driv-

ers have been asking for devicesand systems to make the car eas-ier to use.For example, Malcho said,

Chevrolet has made the chargingsystem in the next-generationVolt even easier for customers torecharge the battery – and tocheck the charge status. Thenext-generation Volt debuts inJanuary at the North AmericanInternational Auto Show.“Chevrolet used the real-world

experiences of today’s Volt own-ers to make the charging processsimpler and more convenient inthe next-generation Volt,” saidAndrew Farah, chief engineer forthe Volt.“The new Volt will give owners

greater flexibility for charging iton their terms.”The new and enhanced fea-

tures, Malcho said, include:• GPS location-based charg-

ing.Owners will now be able to set

their charging preferences exclu-sively for their “home” charginglocation and the vehicle will au-to-matically adjust to that settingwhen it is at that location. Thecar will recognize when it arrives“home,” based on GPS data.This will allow owners to pre-

makes it easier for owners toconfirm their Volt is charging andgauge charge status. The idea, said GM spokesper-son Eneuri Acosta, came fromtalking to customers.

“We’re not aware of any automanufacturer coming up withthis idea before we did,” Acostasaid.

“We got it from customer feed-back. We get a lot of our ideasthat way. For example, theEscalade rear entertainment sys-tem has a remote that wasdesigned by our engineers.

“When talking with customers,we learned that it was too com-plicated for young children tooperate. What we came awaywith was that if we made the re-mote resemble a video game con-troller, the kids would be able touse it, so we did and they can.”

The same thinking went intocreating the Escalade’s backmassager system, Acosta said.Feedback said that while theseats are comfortable, driversstill get tired during long trips.

“The Escalade is often used forlong family trips,” Acosta said.“So we came up with the backmassager for the driver. It’s relax-ing, yes, but we like to think of itas a real safety feature because italso keeps the driver alert andthat’s important during longtrips.”

The 22-way adjustable heatedand ventilated seats now have aluxury option with a massageseat that works in the uppershoulder area, back lumbar orcushion.

“Many Americans have the

common misconception thatmassage is just a luxurious wayto relax. The benefits of massageare actually wide-ranging, espe-cially for those that work thatmonotonous daily grind behind adesk or the wheel of a car,” saidDr. Leena S. Guptha, board chair,National Certification Board forTherapeutic Massage & Body-work.

While the seat is unable to pro-vide the same experience as atrained practitioner, it can atleast offer some comfort for adriver and passenger, Gupthasaid.

“This feature gives customersanother way to improve theirdrive,” said Elizabeth Hayes,General Motors EngineeringGroup manager.

“Once a massage setting isstored, a driver simply has topush the button and engage theluxury option. It’s our goal toalways find ways to make gettingfrom point A to point B a littlemore pleasant.”

The massage seats’ settingscan be stored in the car’s memo-ry like the seat positions, Hayessaid. With a toggle switch or acti-vation button, both on the out-board base of the seats, the driv-er and front seat passenger candirect the illustration of adjust-ments on the infotainmentscreen. The desired massage andintensity can both be controlledfrom the screen.

Once the optimal massage isfound, the driver can save thekneading, rolling or anti-fatiguesetting by pressing the memorybutton on the door, Hayes said.Reactivation can then occur bysimply pushing the button on theseat base.

The massage seat is availableon the XTS Premium and Plat-inum Collections and on theEscalade Platinum Collection.

AUBURN, Ind. (AP) – A 1939GM Futurliner owned by the Na-tional Auto & Truck Museum isjoining the new National HistoricVehicle Register.The giant bus-like vehicle will

take part with other vehicles onthe register in a Cars at the Capi-tal display May 3 and 4, 2015, onthe National Mall in Washington,D.C.The Futurliner already is in the

nation’s capital awaiting its ap-pearance at the Washington AutoShow Jan. 23 through Feb. 1.When its D.C. tour is through,

the vehicle will come home nextspring for its first display insidethe Auburn museum, The Star re-ported. Until a recent remodel-ing, the Futurliner was too big tofit through the museum’s doors.Museum president John Pon-

tius said the Futurliner’s returnwill mark the first time that aNational Historic Landmarkbuilding will display a vehicle onthe National Historic Vehicle Reg-ister.Museum board member Jerry

Muzzillo came up with a plan toenlarge an entrance door at themuseum, and Sid and Belva Mey-er of Auburn donated to movesprinkler heads to make spacefor the Futurliner, Pontius said.“Auburn Door took Muzzillo’sidea and did a wonderful jobmaking it work,” Pontius added.“We were excited about having

it here this winter, because we’reall ready for it,” Pontius saidabout the Futurliner. “But whenthe chance for two shows inWashington, D.C., came along, itwas a much better opportunityfor the Futurliner and the muse-um. It brings us both attention.”Going forward, Pontius said, it

will be out for the show circuitfor the summers, but when it’snot in a show, it will be in our mu-seum.Car collector Joe Bortz of

Chicago donated the Futurlinerto the museum in 1992. In 1998, agroup of volunteers from Michi-gan, led by Don Mayton ofBeaverdam, began a seven-yeareffort to restore the vehicle.In return for their work, the

museum allows the volunteers toexhibit the Futurliner at carshows across the nation in warm-weather months.Until now, the Futurliner has

taken up residence for the win-ters in museums across theregion, including a 2011-2012stay at the National Military His-tory Center and Kruse Automo-tive and Carriage Museum southof Auburn.Only a few vehicles have been

selected for the new NationalHistoric Vehicle Register since aJanuary announcement of a 1964Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe asthe first choice. Since then, pub-licly announced selections in-clude a 1947 Tucker 48 proto-type, a 1964 Meyers Manx dunebuggy, and a 1938 Maserati 8TCFBoyle Special that won the 1939and 1940 Indianapolis 500 races.The Historic Vehicle Associa-

tion created the register in a proj-ect with the U.S. Department ofthe Interior. A vehicle chosen forthe register must meet at least

one of four standards:• Ties to an important event in

automotive or American history;• Ties to significant people in

automotive or American history;• Distinctive design, engineer-

ing, craftsmanship or aestheticvalue; or,• A vehicle that was the first

or last of its type produced, hasrarity as a survivor of its type, oris among the most well-pre-served or thoughtfully restoredsurviving examples.General Motors built the muse-

um’s Futurliner and 11 more likeit for touring exhibits. They trav-eled the nation in a caravan dur-ing 1940 and again from 1953 to1956, carrying displays of futuris-tic marvels such as microwaveovens and stereophonic sound.Each Futurliner is 33 feet long,

8 feet wide, more than 11 feet talland weighs more than 12 tons.Only nine Futurliners remain,

and five are reported to be intotal disrepair, according to re-ports. An automotive publicationsaid this week that the Auburnmuseum’s No. 10 Futurliner hasbeen on public display morethan any of the others.

automakers to produce “axle-split hybrids,” Gassmann said. Aconventional or hybridized en-gine provides the primary powerto either the front or rear wheels,with the other axle driven by aneAxle module.The technology responds to

deliver an instant high-torque all-wheel-drive experience, a usefulpure electric range or a refined,efficient parallel hybrid mode.No other hybrid architecture of-fers such a strong combinationof efficiency, traction, dynamicsand packaging, said Gassman.Until now, electric and axle-

split hybrid vehicles have usedsingle-speed transmissions,Gassmann said.He further explained that using

a fixed ratio limits electric drivesin terms of either acceleration ortop speed as they must discon-nect at certain speeds to preventthe motor overspinning.GKN’s two-speed eAxle is the

first to enable the electric driveto boost the vehicle’s perform-ance across its entire speedrange, he said.Designing the two-speed eAxle

for a high-performance sportscar application placed tightpackaging requirements onGKN’s development team,Gassmann said.To achieve high torque density

in a package that weighs just27kg and measures less than325mm by 562mm by 313mm,some remarkable design deci-sions were made.

New-vehicle retail sales inNovember are expected to reachtheir highest level for the monthsince 2001, according to a month-ly sales forecast developed joint-ly by J.D. Power and LMC Auto-motive.

New-vehicle retail sales inNovember 2014 are projected tocome in at 1.1 million units, a 5.5percent increase on a selling-dayadjusted basis, compared withNovember 2013 (November 2014has one fewer selling day thanlast year).

The retail seasonally adjustedannualized rate (SAAR) in No-vember is expected to reach 13.5million units, 200,000 unitsstronger than in November 2013.

Retail transactions are themost accurate measure of trueunderlying consumer demandfor new vehicles, said J.D. Powerspokesperson John Tews.

“The industry continues todemonstrate strong salesgrowth, which is exceptionalconsidering that November iscurrently on pace to record thehighest average customer-facingtransaction prices ever,” saidJohn Humphrey, senior vice pres-ident of the global automotivepractice at J.D. Power.

Through Nov. 16, retail trans-action prices are averaging$30,874, which is $165 more thanthe previous record of $30,709 inOctober 2014, Humphrey said.

Combined record transactionprices with strong new-vehicleretail sales has November onpace for a record month for con-sumer spending on new vehicleat $33.3 billion, which is $1.1 bil-lion more than the previousrecord for the month of Novem-ber set in 2013.

“Automakers will take advan-tage of the Thanksgiving holiday,one of the highest-volume holi-day weekends of the year,” saidHumphrey.

J.D. Power forecasts that morethan 238,000 units will have beensold over the Thanksgiving holi-day weekend, Humphrey said,which would make it the second-highest-volume holiday weekendof 2014. Labor Day weekend typi-cally tallies the most sales of theyear – this year, it was 279,000units.

Total light-vehicle sales areprojected at 1.26 million units inNovember 2014, up 5 percentfrom November 2013. Novemberis typically a low fleet month,with November 2014 expected tocome in below 15 percent of totallight vehicle sales with volume of178,000 units.

As 2014 nears to a close, LMCAutomotive is holding the 2014U.S. light-vehicle retail sales fore-cast at 13.6 million units andtotal U.S. light-vehicle sales fore-cast at 16.4 million units, Tewssaid.

Humphrey said growth is cur-rently expected to continue in2015, but at a slower pace.

The forecast for retail sales isfor 13.9 million units, and totallight-vehicle sales are expectedto increase to 16.8 millionunits, both up 2 percent from2014.

“The 2014 close is shaping upas expected with November look-ing like another strong perform-ance,” said Jeff Schuster, seniorvice president of forecasting atLMC Automotive.

“Looking forward, downwardpressure has given way to upsidemomentum, with a stronger

economy, significant new modelactivity and low gas prices creat-ing an opportunity for the light-vehicle market to hit 17 millionunits in 2015.”

North American productionthrough October is at 14.3 mil-lion units, a 5 percent increasefrom the same period in 2013,Humphrey said. Vehicle invento-ry heading into November was ata 76-day supply, up from 64 daysin September.

LMC Automotive has increasedthe North American productionforecast for 2014 to 16.9 millionunits from 16.8 million units,which is a 5 percent increasefrom the 16.2 million units in2013, Tews said.

North American production in2015 is expected to eclipse 17million units, with capacity uti-lization continuing to run at orabove the 90 percent level.

The federal government’sSmall Business Administration(SBA) has extended the deadlineto submit an application for aloan to help recover from theAugust floods. The new deadlineis Monday, Dec. 15.

According to SBA spokesper-son Michael Lampton, the exten-sion is meant to allow business-es, homeowners and rentersadditional time to submit theirSBA disaster loan applications.

These loans, if approved, haveinterest rates as low as 4 percentfor business owners and 2.625for private, nonprofit organiza-tions, Lampton said.

Homeowners could receive aloan interest rate as low as 2.06percent. Those specifically seek-ing SBA assistance can go onlineat disasterloan.sba.gov/ele, orcall 1-800-877-8339.

To be considered for disasterassistance any kind from thefederal government, interestedparties may register online at thesite disastersassistance.gov orcall 1-800-659-2955 between thehours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. East-ern time for assistance.
