Warrington Wolves Foundation Handball Club’s production line of emerging Junior International players continues. Featuring strongly in The Cheshire Schools’ Squad who competed in the EHA U16 NW County Schools Championships at Birchwood High on Saturday 1st December, four Wolves players (Nic Tan, Jacob Maxted, Jonny Stapleton and Luke Taylor) who play for the Wolves U18’s helped Cheshire retain their Northern Counties title and will play in the National Finals in London in February. The four emerging stars are also firmly in the frame for possible selection at full England Schoolboy honours later in the year.

The Wolves’ success story at producing youth internationals is seen in the current U18 line up with Dan Bibby, Liam Welsby, Chris Grundy and James Havey who are all on the England National Academy. The biggest success stories are Alex Bradley and Beth Wilbraham who have moved on to the world famous Aarhus Handball Academy in Denmark where they are plying their trade full time.

The newly formed U11’s WWF HC played in its first competitive fixture in November and was a very successful appearance as the first U11 Warrington Wolves Team in the NW League (3 out of 4 wins against established teams). The younger brother of Women’s GB player and Foundation Patron Holly Lam-Moores formed part of this team, so we are hoping to emulate Holly’s success and produce the next generation of Olympic athletes right here in Warrington.

After Lymm High girls winning the Girls National U13 Tournament last year and achieving third place in the Girls U15 National Tournament, a new session has been started at the school with the aim to establish it as a centre of excellence. The sessions will be open to girls from any school in the area.

Head & Feed

Team GB star Maria Bertelli took time out after the Olympics and European Championships to come to the launch of Warrington’s new Junior Volleyball Club. Volleyball England and Warrington School Sport Partnership have worked hard to develop participation in schools.Warrington Wolves Foundation and Bridgewater Diamonds have joined together in a model that will offer the opportunity to promote and develop a pathway for further participation.

Maria Bertelli said, “On the back of the Olympics, this is a great time to inspire and motivate our young people to participate in sport. I hope to continue to support the Wolves Club and wish them lots of luck.”

Paul Bedworth, Wolves Volleyball Coach, stated, “It’s been a long slog from 3 years ago when we first started pushing for new facilities in Warrington – a positive step saw us getting involved with the Ball Hall and School Sport Partnership. The appointment of a Development Officer with Volleyball England has enabled Volleyball to be promoted

The Head and Feed project is an innovative programme of sport and education, supported by Sport Relief, designed to raise awareness of mental health and emotional well-being within the local community. One in four people in the UK will experience a mental health issue this year but by educating youngsters in schools and offering structured physical activity sessions to adults within Warrington, The Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation will begin to tackle stigma and raise awareness.

The impact of sport on mental health cannot be underestimated on an individual’s physical, social and emotional well-being. Research has highlighted that regular participation in physical activity helps reduce muscle tension, relieve stress and provide relaxation, all of which are highly beneficial for people with

and developed in our school. We hope that this initial work along with The Foundation’s involvement will prove to be a real boost and get the kids to join the new Club so that we can generate a real pathway for juniors in to the adult game.”

Training takes place every Sunday 4.45pm until 5.45pm at The Orford Jubliee Hub. For more information, please contact: [email protected]

mental health issues.

Mental health does not discriminate and can affect anyone at any point in their life. Sportsmen and sportswomen including Andrew Johns, former All Black John Kirwin, cricketer Marcus Trescothick, David Beckham and Team GB’s golden girl, Victoria Pendleton, have all recently highlighted their own personal experiences of mental health and the project will hopefully help people become more self aware of their own emotional well-being.

and development programme.

Two years ago, The Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation began a partnership project with HMP Thorn Cross Young Offenders Institute, funded by The Big Lottery Fund.

The aim of the project was to engage, motivate and inspire the young men to give something back to our community and improve their confidence in re-engaging with life outside of prison.

Throughout the two years, over 110 young men received accredited qualifications and delivered activities to school and community groups.

The programme was co-ordinated by The Foundation’s Sports Leader Coach, who worked within the prison with their staff, delivering qualifications and assessing those most suited. He then carefully supervised them on placements within different environments.

An enhanced part played by the Sports Leader Coach has seen him mentor the young men into employment opportunities.

The relationship built with HMP Thorn Cross will see the continuation of many positive networks and established opportunities for the young men to continue using their skills and gaining experience to help with their future.

Foundation Skills will continue in partnership with HMP Thorn Cross and The Wolves, looking for further opportunities with resources and funding.

Shaun Ryan, Director of Protive said,

“Gary Hewitt, Ben Moores, Lewis Charnockand Joe Ryan are all great lads who have benefited through playing rugby and the work of The Foundation. Knowing and understanding the impact their work has on young people’s lives, I had no hesitation in becoming a Business Patron.”

Total:Sport Total:Sport is a sport based project that allows young people with additional needs and/or impairments, and their friends to access a fully inclusive sports Club.

GRACE gives older people the opportunity to be part of a weekly exercise/dance performance group.

The workshops are designed to increase the participants’ creativity and self-confidence, develop new skills, and give a sense of purpose, social engagement opportunities and improved health/ fitness.

The weekly dance and movement sessions aim to keep the group mentally and physically challenged and stimulated whilst maintaining and improving a steady level of fitness and creating a greater sense of mental well being.

The group formed in October 2011 and throughout the past year have taken part in various dance performances including Community dance platforms at

The main aim of the sessions is to identify local talent and signpost them to Regional and National pathways. There are a number of sports that have teamed up with Total:Sport including Football, Rugby, Tennis, Boxing, Handball, Volleyball and Multi Sports. Total:Sport is also working with a number of local Sport clubs and organisations to break down the barriers which young people with additional needs and/or impairments face when accessing a mainstream Sports Club.

Easter will be the launch of the Total:Academy, a National Academy for young people who are talented and have been identified for regional and National competitions. The Academy will include a number of sessions presented by professionals on subjects such as nutrition and diet, analysis and goal setting.

International Wheelchair Fencer for Great Britain, Adrian Derbyshire, supports the project and thinks “It is a great way to get young people with additional needs involved in sport. The town has been crying out for inclusive sporting activities and after the 2012 Paralympics this is the perfect way to capture the young people.”

the Pyramid and Parr Hall, ‘The Moment When’ site specific performance, and a performance for HRH Queen at the opening of Orford Jubilee Park.

GRACE is the only older adults performance company in Warrington and one of the few within the North West. The company are recognised as advocates for older people’s dance and are an inspiration for other adults to work creatively, try new activities and stay fit! The company are regularly invited to perform at various events for older people in order to achieve these outcomes and more recently were invited to Fleetwood to assist with the launch of their own older adults dance group.

GRACE meet weekly and are always keen to have new members join their group. For more information contact Leah on: 01925 248894. Several Young Trustees have

taken part in the Ambassador CEOP facilitator training enabling them to deliver the CEOP training to other young people and groups.

The CEOP is powerful training when delivered by peers. During the training groups are encouraged to share their experiences of social websites, chat rooms, and to discuss how, why and when they use the internet.

The training will raise the groups awareness of bullying, grooming and many other topics that affect them. They will be shown how easy it is for people to track them by things they write and photos they show. They will explore any issues

and dangers young people have encountered and discuss how it was dealt with and how effective this was. The training explores how CEOP works and when appropriate to press the REPORT button. It gives children and young people confidence in knowing and understanding there are people who can help and support them if they are being harassed or bullied online.

Our facilitators are Jason, Matt, Michael, Dylan, Ruby, Georgia, Alice and Chelsea.
