Ubu Roi charts the exploits of the despotic King Ubu and stands as a startling challenge to the comfortable and conventional. Menacing, petulant and wonderfully anarchic, the play’s piercing humour continues to fascinate us, enabling a world of rich theatrical possibility in a parade of the grotesque that keeps pace with our own times.

A man whose memories are carried by birds. A woman whose children have grown with the trees. A family whose garden is the fathomless ocean. If who we are and what we call home is interwoven with nature, what happens when everything starts to change?

Performed within a stunning multi-screen film installation, with a soundscape of birdsong, electronic music and a new score for string quartet, Above Me The Wide Blue Sky draws together stories of love, loss and belonging from an ever-changing world. A long awaited follow-up to their critically acclaimed On Ageing in 2010.

The installation is open to ticket holders before and after the performance.

Written four hundred years ago by librarian and vicar Robert Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as "the greatest book ever written". Its 1500 pages are full of cutting edge science, maids vomiting pebbles, priests defecating in ditches, lovers unrequited, friends who can’t be parted, plus enormous expansive long lists of every food, herb, location, activity or occupation that can bring on or cure melancholy in any one of its many forms.

In their stage version Stan's Cafe transform this extraordinary book into a guided tour of melancholy and the mind of its author; in so doing they consider how this 17th century self-help manual reflects our own concerns and obsessions.

Millie Dillmount arrives in the hustle and bustle of 1920s Manhattan with one thing on her mind: marrying her boss. As we follow the ups and downs of her New York experience – making friends, avoiding her evil landlady and unexpectedly falling in love along the way – we find that reinventing oneself as a “thoroughly modern” individual is harder than it looks.

MTW’s Thoroughly Modern Millie is set to combine toe-tapping dance routines and jazzy musical numbers with hilarious cases of mistaken identity, all the while showing its audiences that “this is 1922!”

One World Week

One World WeekOne World Week at the University of Warwick is part of the world’s largest student-run international event and one of the most exciting weeks on campus. Taking place every January, One World Week is a celebration of the cultures and diversity represented at Warwick and features a huge range of events. This year, Warwick Arts Centre will again be hosting two of the week’s most spectacular events: the Fashion Show in the Butterworth Hall (Sat 26 Jan) and the World Music Concert in the Theatre (Sun 27 Jan).

The Fashion Show features models from the numerous societies at Warwick in addition to dazzling performances by the One World Week Models. The World Music Concert showcases the best musical talent at the University together with professional acts from around the world.

A captivating programme devoted to Opus Ones. Schumann borrows a coat from Chopin; Berg hurls a truly monumental challenge, and Brahms shows why Schumann said he’d “sprung fully armed, like Minerva, from the head of Zeus”.

First, though, we celebrate the work of two of Mozart’s greatest 20th century fans. On the eve of World War Two Bartók wrote a Divertimento that channelled the spirit of Mozart for an age of anxiety – and Britten’s Simple Symphony reworks the tunes he hummed at school into a mini-masterpiece of irresistible freshness.

Nico Muhly is one of today’s most interesting, eclectic & sought-after composers: he is as adept at writing for cathedral choirs as for Björk, for symphony orchestras or for films, such as The Reader. It is a great coup to commission a new work from him, especially such a substantial one. He is taking the direction on Gibbons’s book of madrigals to heart: Apt for viols & voyces.

Gavin Bryars has been in the news recently with the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, owing to his iconic piece based on that tragedy. His response to another tragedy is the subject of his Cadman Requiem, which mourns the passing of a friend on flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.

Orlando Gibbons’ First Book of Madrigals & Motets was published in 1612, contains the most famous, perfect and one of the shortest madrigals: The Silver Swan. The collection as a whole is a masterpiece of concision and expression, marking Gibbons out as one of England’s greatest composers.

From school to adulthood, we spend a huge amount of our lives in the workplace. In it, life-long friendships and romances are formed; it provides the arena in which power games and gender politics are played out; it is the setting for innovation and life-changing research as well as endless repetition and ennui.

Through a series of film works this exhibition explores the frustration and alienation of a contemporary workforce, but also the often humorous strategies employed for survival. The exhibition brings

together work by international artists, depicting the workplace as a universal experience, one which cuts across political and geographical boundaries.

For the duration of the exhibition, the Mead Gallery reveals itself to be a workplace too, as we invite visitors to hotdesk, hold meetings or just eat lunch within the exhibition space.

This is a Mead Gallery touring exhibition organised in association with the Harris Museum & Art Gallery.

UK artists John Wood and Paul Harrison have been collaborating since 1993. Their work has been presented at major galleries worldwide. Through immaculately constructed video works and what they describe as ‘informative and uninformative text pieces, drawings, doodles and half thoughts, and quite useful sculptures,’ the pair explore the physical and psychological parameters of the world around them, questioning and ultimately affirming a human position in the world that is essentially positive.
