Cheek by Jowl Ubu Roiby Alfred Jarry directed by Declan Donnellan designed by Nick Ormerodrmerod

Wed 30 Jan – Sat 2 Feb 7.30pm Theatre £18.50 (£16.50), £21.50 (£19.50), £24.50 (£22.50) Under 26s £12.50 In French with English surtitles Age 16+

Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod are reunited with their ‘crack ensemble' (The Guardian) of French actors, last seen in Andromaque in 2009.

Ubu Roi charts the exploits of the despotic King Ubu and stands as a startling challenge to the comfortable and conventional. Menacing, petulant and wonderfully anarchic, the play’s piercing humour continues to fascinate us, enabling a world of rich theatrical possibility in a parade of the grotesque that keeps pace with our own times.

Cheek by Jowl has established an international reputation for bringing “fresh life to the classics using intense, vivid performances like a laser of light to set the text ablaze” (The Guardian). The company is an Artistic Associate at the Barbican, London, and has toured Russian, French and English language productions to over 300 cities in 40 countries.

Co-producers: Cheek by Jowl with Barbican, London, Les Gémeaux/Sceaux/Scène Nationale and Comédie de Béthune, Centre Dramatique National Nord/Pas-de-Calais.

Framed as a film that is being directed by a famous Chinese film director and crew, The Zero Hour fuses live action with pre-recorded film, animation, and computer generated imagery to create a world where human relationships are located at the heart of historical events. Disturbing and romantic in turn The Zero Hour is shot through with the obsessions (sex, babies, death, WW2 and time travel) that are the hallmarks of imitating the dog’s narrative inventions to date.

‘…My friends here are from England, and they were wondering about Bigfoot, if you had any like Bigfoot stories, experiences, anything like that...?’

Ella Good and Nicki Kent present a new performance that examines their own experiences of searching for a legendary mythical creature in rural America. Using extracts of recorded conversation from people they met on the way, film, animation and live performance, Ella and Nicki cross into a world where the wild and unknown can exist. Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf... is always at the door.

When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation this is the wickedly twisted new tale from the multiple award-winning company behind the international hit Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

Like a giant novel bursting into life, 1927 invite you on a theatrical journey of startling originality.

Stan’s Cafe

The Anatomy of MelancholyTue 12 - Fri 15 Mar 7.45pm Studio £13.50 (£11.50) Under 26s £9.50 80mins (no interval) Age 12+

Written four hundred years ago by librarian and vicar Robert Burton, The Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as "the greatest book ever written". Its 1500 pages are full of cutting edge science, maids vomiting pebbles, priests defecating in ditches, lovers unrequited, friends who can’t be parted, plus enormous expansive long lists of every food, herb, location, activity or occupation that can bring on or cure melancholy in any one of its many forms.

In their stage version Stan's Cafe transform this extraordinary book into a guided tour of melancholy and the mind of its author; in so doing they consider how this 17th century self-help manual reflects our own concerns and obsessions.

“Stan’s Cafe has a genius way of explaining things and making the difficult simple” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian.

Major Tom by Victoria Melody

Mon 29 & Tue 30 Apr 7.45pm Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 1hr Age 14+

After discovering that her dog had prize-winning potential at a charity dog show, Victoria seized upon the opportunity to gain access to that extraordinarily exclusive members only club: the show-dog owner's club. But Major Tom’s first show was a disaster, and feeling an overpowering sense of guilt about her dog being criticised, Victoria decided to put herself through the same process by becoming a beauty queen.

Based on a true story, Major Tom and Victoria increasingly immerse themselves into the obsessive and confusing realm of personal scrutiny as they participate as genuine contestants and aim to win. This show will follow their story and reflect on the British fascination with celebrities, beauty, and winning.

AMUSEMENTS Fri 26 & Sat 27 Apr 7.45pm Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 1hr Age 14+

Like some backroom carnival ride lo-fi sci-fi pleasure machine, AMUSEMENTS is an intensely sensorial and breathlessly seductive one-woman headphone-theatre spectacular that asks what exactly we might want from our entertainment, and what it might want from us. With the audience plugged wirelessly into its beating heart, the performance is both a hypnotic dance towards the limits of pleasure and an unsettling voyeuristic tribute to our private desires. It is an escapist's wet dream which grapples sleepily along the way with the dizzying highs and terrifying boredoms of the early 21st century: the soporific hum of mass communication; the television’s warm embrace.

You are an audience. You are a machine for watching. Remember everything.

The Price of Everything by Daniel Bye

Thu 6 & Fri 7 Jun 7.45pm Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 1hr Age 14+

How much is beauty worth?

What will people pay for an air guitar on eBay?

Can I have a glass of milk?

These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye's whistlestop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often tendentious - but always a joy to watch.

Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you've ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value.

And you get a free glass of milk.

Berg Sonata Opus 1 Brahms Sonata No1 in C major Opus 1

A captivating programme devoted to Opus Ones. Tchaikovsky snaps a couple of green sprigs from Russian folksong, Bartók pays a debt to Liszt, and an angry young Prokofiev throws his romantic toys out of the pram. Schumann borrows a coat from Chopin; Berg hurls a truly monumental challenge, and Brahms shows why Schumann said he’d “sprung fully armed, like Minerva, from the head of Zeus”.

Peter Donohoe brings a lifetime’s insight to each and every one of them so expect power, tenderness, and the perennially fresh touch of one of the supreme piano virtuosos of our time.

The European Union Chamber Orchestra is a crack team of superb young players, united by the sheer joy of making music together. Critics rave over their “warmth of sound, the elegance of phrasing and the razor-sharp focus of their ensemble”.

With national treasure Tasmin Little, they bring all their signature verve to a joyous programme, including Grieg’s sunny mock-baroque suite, Elgar’s heartfelt Elegy, a Haydn symphony fit for an empress and Mozart’s bubbly Fourth Violin Concerto. If you’re one of the millions who fell in love with Henryk Górecki’s Third Symphony, you’ll be bowled over by his atmospheric Three Pieces in Old Style.

Conductor Andrew Litton Piano Christian Ihle Hadland

Ear-splitting battles, swaggering pride and dream-like beauty, not forgetting one of the steamiest love-scenes in all music: it’s all in Richard Strauss’s A Hero’s Life.

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra tonight share two very special gifts from Norway. Grieg’s Piano Concerto never gets any less popular; but there’ll be something particularly magical about hearing it played by one of Norway’s rising stars, accompanied by the orchestra that Grieg himself used to conduct. As for Delius’s On the Mountains, get ready for a wonderful discovery: a gorgeous musical landscape by a Bradford lad with Norway in his soul.

Bernstein Candide Overture Penderecki Chaconne Glass Violin Concerto Mahler Symphony No.5

Conductor Jacek Kaspszyk Violin Agata Szymczewska

An inspired showcase for the award-winning young Agata Szymczewska, whilst Kaspszyk and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra bring a special intensity to Penderecki’s Chaconne. Bernstein’s Candide overture gets things swinging, before Philip Glass’s Violin Concerto weaves shimmering patterns into music of astonishing expressive power and beauty: a true modern classic, with a heart of pure song.

To conclude, Mahler’s Fifth begins in terror and ends in triumph – but there’s a lifetime of emotion in between. From winter storms to dizzying waltzes and melting love-songs, it’s one of the most gripping experiences an orchestra, a conductor and an audience can share.

Britten Simple Symphony Bartók Divertimento Mozart Requiem

Conductor Paul McGrath Warwick University Chamber Choir with: Soprano - Tinuke Olafimihan, Mezzo Soprano - Gaynor Keeble, Tenor - Nicholas Sharratt, Baritone - Nicholas Lester

The masked stranger, the mysterious commission, the dying Mozart frantically composing as his life ebbed away… if you’ve seen Amadeus, you’ll know the legend behind his Requiem. The reality is even more incredible – as music’s greatest genius comes to terms with the ultimate mystery of human existence, and pours it all out in music of unforgettable beauty and power.

First, though, we celebrate the work of two of Mozart’s greatest 20th century fans. On the eve of World War Two Bartók wrote a Divertimento that channelled the spirit of Mozart for an age of anxiety – and Britten’s Simple Symphony reworks the tunes he hummed at school into a mini-masterpiece of irresistible freshness.

Nico Muhly is one of today’s most interesting, eclectic & sought-after composers: he is as adept at writing for cathedral choirs as for Björk, for symphony orchestras or for films, such as The Reader. It is a great coup to commission a new work from him, especially such a substantial one. He is taking the direction on Gibbons’s book of madrigals to heart: Apt for viols & voyces.

Gavin Bryars has been in the news recently with the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, owing to his iconic piece based on that tragedy. His response to another tragedy is the subject of his Cadman Requiem, which mourns the passing of a friend on flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.

Orlando Gibbons’ First Book of Madrigals & Motets was published in 1612, contains the most famous, perfect and one of the shortest madrigals: The Silver Swan. The collection as a whole is a masterpiece of concision and expression, marking Gibbons out as one of England’s greatest composers.

Wed 9 Jan – Sat 9 MarOpen Mon – Sat 12 noon to 9pm FREE ENTRY(The Gallery will open at 10am from Tue 22 – Thu 24 Jan)

From school to adulthood, we spend a huge amount of our lives in the workplace. In it, life-long friendships and romances are formed; it provides the arena in which power games and gender politics are played out; it is the setting for innovation and life-changing research as well as endless repetition and ennui.

Through a series of film works this exhibition explores the frustration and alienation of a contemporary workforce, but also the often humorous strategies employed for survival. The exhibition brings

together work by international artists, depicting the workplace as a universal experience, one which cuts across political and geographical boundaries.

For the duration of the exhibition, the Mead Gallery reveals itself to be a workplace too, as we invite visitors to hotdesk, hold meetings or just eat lunch within the exhibition space.

This is a Mead Gallery touring exhibition organised in association with the Harris Museum & Art Gallery.

The Independent has described Odd Comic’s Holly Bodmer and Dot Howard’s unconventional performance as “intriguing, intelligent and frequently laugh-out-loud funny.” “…a nuttiness reminiscent of Smack the Pony,” said The List.

For this special illustrated talk, Paul Harrison will be providing an insight into the development of their practice since 1993 up to their most recent work.
