Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is asking of you. Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Spiritual Heartburn and Typology The disciples recounted how their hearts were burning within them when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them. One of the many beautiful elements of the Faith is Biblical typology, the fulfillment of elements of the Old Testament in the New Testament. Common examples are Noah’s ark prefiguring the Church, the Flood prefiguring Baptism, and Moses prefiguring Jesus Christ. As we rejoice throughout this blessed Easter Season, let us pray with the Old Testament and see how Christ fulfills what is found in it. St. Augustine wrote, “In the Old Testament the New Testament is concealed; in the New Testament the Old Testament is revealed." Through typology we can experience spiritual heartburn, the best kind, and more fully appreciate God’s plan in salvation history. archstl.org/dynamic

The Anointing of the Sick: Comfort and Healing

The Anointing of the Sick is a remarkable sign of God's great love for us. In his merciful efforts to bring us safely to himself in heaven, God seems to have gone to the very limit. Jesus has given us the sacrament of Baptism, in which original sin and all pre-Baptismal sins are cleansed from the soul. Allowing for mankind's spiritual weakness, Jesus also gave us the sacrament of Penance, by which post-Baptismal sins could be forgiven. As though he were impatient lest a soul be delayed a single instant from its entry into heaven, Jesus gave to his Church the power to remit the temporal punishment due to sin, a power which the Church exercises in the granting of indulgences. Finally, as though to make doubly sure that no one, except through his own deliberate fault, would lose heaven or even spend time in purgatory, Jesus instituted the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. A special sacrament for the sick & suffering The Catechism of the Catholic Church's section on the Anointing of the Sick defines the purpose of the sacrament as "the conferral of a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in the condition of grave illness or old age." (Catechism, 1527) In his Gospel St. Mark (6:12-13) gives us an indication of this sacrament of the sick when he tells us that the apostles, going forth, "preached that men should repent, and they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many sick people, and healed them." However, the classical description which the Bible gives of the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is found in the Epistle of St. James: Is anyone among you sick? Let him bring in the presbyters [priests] of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him. (James 5:14-15)

"When some lives, including those of the unborn, are subjected to the personal choices of others, no other value or right will long be guaranteed, and society will inevitably be governed by special interests and convenience." Pope Saint John Paul II

THIS WEEK’S READINGS: Today we will hear the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, a story that we may find played out in our own lives more than we realize. Two despondent followers of Jesus walk away from Jerusalem, not knowing which way to turn. All their hopes have been dashed. We too have walked that road when our life had been disrupted, our dreams snatched away. Then, miraculously, like the disciples in the story, we discover God’s presence in the midst of our despair. Let us listen for God’s message to us today in these holy words of scripture. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Where did I encounter Jesus, perhaps by surprise, this past week? Where will I look for Jesus in the week that lies ahead?

April 29/30, 2017 – Third Sunday of Easter The Road to Emmaus Throughout the story of Mary’s faith journey, she is traveling almost constantly: from the visitation to her cousin Elizabeth, her journey to Bethlehem, the young family’s flight into Egypt, to the pilgrimage to Jerusalem with the child Jesus. Her travels, both alone and with her growing family, are an opportunity to grow in faith, with one heart, dedicated to God’s will. In today’s Gospel reading, two apostles find themselves in the same scene that we often see Mary: traveling on the road, unsure of the future. The risen Jesus meets them on the road, and they share with Him the recent events of the crucifixion and apparent disappearance of Jesus’ body from the tomb. Jesus helps them understand that His death and Resurrection is in fulfillment of the scripture, beginning with Moses and the prophets (Lk 24: 13-35). During this Easter season, the Annual Catholic Appeal is dedicated to our Blessed Mother, and encourages us to follow in the example of Mary. She was often unsure of the future, yet placed trust in God and His will, knowing that it would be revealed in the fullness of time. Like Mary, on the road as a young woman, or the apostles on the road to Emmaus, many in our communities may be struggling on their journey, unsure of the future. Through the many ministries, agencies and apostolates supported by the Appeal, we extend the love and mercy of Jesus to those seeking assistance on their journeys. Our Goal this year: St. Joachim - $10,810 with a challenge goal of $19,310 (which we always exceed!). St. Joseph’s goal is $973.00. Pledge cards for St. Joachim are available in the school cafeteria this weekend following all the Masses. At St. Joseph they are available on the table in the back of Church. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes to make their pledge. Thank you for your generous support of the Annual Catholic Appeal last year. Please remember that your contribution and those made throughout the Archdiocese, helped to enliven programs and ministries right here in St. Joachim Parish with our Parish School Assistance of $149,000 and Tuition Subsidy for Paul VI Institute of $250.00.

WHITE HOUSE RETREAT CENTER All women of the parish are invited to join us on our annual retreat at the White House Retreat Center, St. Louis, MO. This will be a silent, guided retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It’s a peaceful break from the chaos and confusion of everyday life. It’s like a 3 day vacation with Christ on their beautiful 8- acre campus high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. All meals and private lodging are provided. Our retreat begins the evening of July 20th and concludes July 23rd. There is no set fee to attend a retreat the White House! White House operates on a free will offering basis, asking those in attendance to simply give what they feel they can at the conclusion of the retreat. To register Call Donna Laramore at 573-210-6706 or visit www.whretreat.org to find additional dates.

Love, then obedience It is not that we keep His commandments first, and then He loves;

But, instead He loves us first, and then we keep His commandments. This is God’s merciful grace, which is revealed

to the humble, but hidden from the proud. St Augustine

St. Joachim School

“Your Future Begins With Us” News from St. Joachim School

Mission Statement The mission of St. Joachim Catholic School is to assist the parents and parish community in the shared responsibility of providing an excellent religious and academic education that is Alive in Christ for the children of Washington County. FROM THE DESK OF MRS. LITTON St. Joachim students are back and have just three weeks of school left. What a great year and so much was accomplished. Many thanks to all that made it possible. If you can believe it, I have already completed several tasks for the 2017-18 school. We are looking forward to enjoying the summer but it's always exciting to return in the fall. Our First Communion students will receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist on Sunday, May 7th at 10:00 Mass. This is an exciting time for these children. Mrs. Heuer and I are both very proud of them. The NCEA Convention was a great success for the attending teachers of Old Mines along with visitors from around the world. Each of us learned many new ideas and were led by faith filled leaders. A very positive week for all of us! I want to thank our Advisory Board of Education committee members for the hours they donate for meetings and decision making. This group of people are very supportive and provide their knowledge and input to make our school the best. Mrs. Agnes Courtway, Lindsey Thebeau, Peg Portell, Leslie Summers, & Dr. Ben DeWaal currently serve on the committee along with Fr, Tony and myself. Mrs. Agnes and Mrs. Peg will be retiring in July after three years of service. Again THANKS! I must also thank the many volunteers that help out daily and contribute in so many ways, small or large. Our volunteers are so vital to our school's continuation. Please keep sharing your talents and time. You are appreciated. All of our teachers have agreed to return next year and I thank them for their dedication to Catholic teaching. These skilled teachers apply themselves fully. I continue to search for competent personnel to do other jobs too. As many of you know Mrs. Monica will not be returning next year. Mrs. Monica is one dedicated and loyal employee! She will be missed. If you would like to wish her well we will be celebrating with her on Monday, May 15th. Please come by or send cards to the office in appreciation of Mrs. Monica's years of service. Please continue to pray for the continuation of our school. Don't ever take its "open doors" for granted or how powerful this small school is in our community. We always need your help and prayers. AS PRINCIPAL, I AM BLESSED TO SERVE ST. JOACHIM SCHOOL. Have a great week.

IMPORTANT DATE!! ST. JOACHIM FALL FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

It’s not too early to start thinking about our Annual Fall Festival! Please put the date on your calendars and plan on helping out! If you weren’t able to attend the short Fall Festival meeting on Tuesday, April 25th, these are a few of the things that were discussed:

• We are looking for someone to chair our main raffle. This person would be responsible for planning the prize layout and securing additional prizes for the raffle. If you are interested in chairing this position or have any workable ideas or concepts please feel free to call Mary Ann at the business office or write them down and put your response in the Sunday collection basket. Thanks!

• We did discuss whether or not to keep the $5000 raffle prize and the possibility of adding ½ beef for the raffle. Additional prizes will also be needed.

• We are looking for someone to chair the placemat advertising portion. That would entail following up on advertisers after our initial mailing goes out and soliciting new advertisers.

• We NEED someone or group to handle the parking!! This is extremely important and we need help with this!

• We need help with emptying the trash throughout the day. If you can help with that, let us know. • Our first order of business is to get a firm commitment from last year’s booth workers. If you worked

in any booth or area of the Festival please call the business office at 438-6181 or send us a message or email to let us know if you plan on helping out. If you cannot help please call and let us know that also.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 12 o’clock noon for family and friends of DANIEL PRATT, son of the late Fabian & Rita (Sampson) Pratt, of Hobe Sound, Florida, who died recently. If you are a relative or friend of the family you are invited to attend.
