THE STRONG-R PILOT ASSESSMENT STUDY Washington State Department of Corrections April 26, 2016 Completed by Zachary Hamilton, Ph.D., Alex Kigerl, Ph.D., & Douglas Routh, MA An article published in August 2012 in Corrections Today, a publication of the American Correctional Association, titled “The Role of Family and Pro-Social Relationships in Reducing Recidivism,” noted that “Family can be a critical component in assisting individuals transitioning from incarceration because family members provide both social control and social support, which inhibit criminal activity https://www.aca.org/fileupload/177/ahaidar/Flower.pdf Vera Institute study, published in October 2012, found that “Incarcerated men and women who maintain contact with supportive family members are more likely to succeed after their release.... Research on people returning from prison shows that family members can be valuable sources of support during incarceration and after release. http://www.vera.org/files/the-family-and-recidivism.pdf https://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2014/apr/15/lowering-recidivism-through-family-communication/

Father Daughter Dance/Hair Affair The Father Daughter Dance and Hair Affair are events for Fathers and their daughters at Larch Corrections Center. The community gets involved with helping to make these events special and memorable. Good Will donates complete outfits for each father. The residents will be able to take these clothes with them when they leave. In order to ensure that the resident’s outfit reflects their style, staff and community members meet with each father so that they can shop for just the right color and style. A local professional photographer takes photos of the fathers and daughters to commemorate the event. The fathers prepare for the day by taking weekly dance classes learning the Cha Cha Slide, Chicken Dance, Cupid Shuffle and some line dances. They also read the book Emotion Coaching your Child by John Gottman to learn about positive parenting strategies which helps to build emotional intelligence in their daughters. This year, they are planning to sew teddy bears for their daughters to take home. Because they’ve missed out on school events and dances, this is an opportunity for fathers to make up for it. The dance gives these men a unique setting to get some one on one time with their daughters while making life-long memories. The Hair Affair gives Glambeauty Bar, a local high-end salon, the opportunity to give back by coming to Larch and teaching the dads to fix their daughter’s hair while giving both a chance to spend the day having fun and being silly. This will teach them that it can be the smallest moments in life that make for some the most powerful memories.

Life Casting For the past five years, Larch Art Club members come to each family centered event and hold a drawing for two life castings of fathers and their children holding hands. The castings are done with alginate, and then Liqua-stone is poured into the mold. Twenty minutes later, a memorable, three dimensional lifecasting of their hands is ready for their children to take home.
