About VT Group

Page 3: Waste

VT Group in the waste sector As government landfi ll taxes rise, society & organisations need to discover the most effi cient ways to minimise, reuse and recycle the waste of their communities. VT offers them a unique approach to addressing this. Working with experienced technology partners we use project management and engineering expertise to identify ways of educating waste producers and processing waste as a resource, reducing the need for landfi ll.

Design, engineering, procurement and constructionWith an extensive engineering heritage and expertise, VT creates innovative solutions that combine proven technologies to create robust and deliverable systems. By combining this with our support service expertise, we are able to deliver a truly integrated solution.

Operate and maintainWe specialise in delivering long-term service contracts, allowing us to develop new ways of working, and invest in new infrastructure to provide value for money.

FinanceWe have built up signifi cant experience raising projectfi nance for Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Private Finance Initiative (PFI) programmes, ensuring the fi nancial viability of these long-term contracts.

Green power generation Autoclave fi bre can be mixed with water and treated in anaerobic digestion tanks. Natural organisms digest the fi bre giving off a methane gas which is collected, stored and used to generate heat and power in gas engines, with excess power being exported to the national grid.

Alternatively, advanced thermal treatment processes, such as pyrolysis and gasifi cation, converts the fi bre into an inert residue and gas which again can be used to generate heat and power.

CompostingGreen waste is treated to produce compost. This compostcan be used as a soil improver in farming or gardens.

Wakefi eld MetropolitanDistrict Council (WMDC)VT is working with WMDC to provide a waste management solution that meets the needs of the Wakefi eld area. The PFI project between VT and WMDC ensures the council achieves its waste strategy targets of diversion and recycling. It began in 2010 and subject to fi nancial close, the construction and commissioning will be completed in early 2012. The plant will process 200,000 tonnes of municipal waste every year.

Education services Increasing public awareness of the issues surroundingwaste will continue to play a pivotal role in achieving sustainability targets. As a leading provider of education services in the UK, VT delivers public information, education and training to all stakeholders.

What VT Group offersVT’s environmental solutions deliver:

Increased ‘green’ performanceOptimised recyclingAround a 90% reduction in the need for landfi llClean renewable energy with low emissionsFlexible, modular solutions

Applying technologyVT draws upon a range of technologies to create effective waste management solutions.

AutoclaveA large pressure cooker that injects steam into the wasteunder pressure, while agitating it to sterilise and break it down.

Sorting systemsOnce ‘cooked’ in the autoclave, clean metals, glass, plastics and aggregates are recovered using a state-of-the-art mechanical sorting processes and sent for reprocessing/ recycling. Fibre, clean of contaminants and high in biomass content, is prepared to produce gas either through Anaerobic Digestion or Pyrolysis/Gasifi cation.
