IMPORTANCE OF WATERWater was considered by

Ancient Greeks as one of the four basic elements forming

the universe.

Water is vital for every living being.  It is an important  part of a country’s wealth; so

we mustn’t waste it.

IMPORTANCIA DEL AGUA

In addition to drinking water, we use it for several daily activities, that is, we need it to cook, to wash up, personal hygiene, watering plants and crops, animals, in factories, energy production, and so on.

Drinking water is essential for human life, but it’s scarce as the population increases y that’s beacuse of ignorant and irresponsible people.

BATHS  /  SHOWERS:  If  we replace baths  for  five-minute showers and if we turn the tap off while we’re soaping up we willl save up to 50 l instead of the 250 l we would use having a bath.

CISTERN:  With  a  6-litre cisterns we can cut the water consumption a 50 per cent  if we  introduce  a  one-litre plastic  bottle  and  using  a double-flush cistern. This  could  save us 3  litres  in each flush.

HAND WASHING / TEETH BRUSHING: We spend about 20 seconds every time we wash our hands and about 40 to 50  seconds  brushing  our  teeth.  Considering  that  we turned off the tap in the development of the action, the average  consumption  could  be  of  about  3  l.  Thus,  we could save a 40 per cent of the water consumption.

WASHING  MACHINE  /  DISH  WASHER:  Depending  on  our consumption, we use both appliances about 1099 times a year, with an average consumption of 55l.  If we carry out full loads with an economic and efficient programme, we can save n 18,2 per cent, decreasing the average consumption to 45l.

CLEANING:  As  a  way  to  save  water  on  cleaning  and  watering plantes,  if  we  use  ecologic  detergents  for  our  wahings  we  can reuse the water from the wastepipe. Although we can not always do  it,  maybe  one  every  two  washes.  This  water  can  be  used  to scrub the floor and also to water the plants since they would not be affected by that type of detergent. With this measure we could save up to the 37.2 %

ELECTRIC ENERGY CONSUMPTION

• When  Thales  of  Miletos started rubbing amber  stones with  cat’s fur  around  600  BC,  he  couldn’t imagine that  the static electricity he  was  observing  could, some years later,  transport  people from  distant  places  in  metallic boxes  we  know  as cars,  among many other things.

Page 18: Water

Our lives without electricity

• A glance around will reveal that we are so deeply surrounded by energy that we don’t even notice.

Energy starts up our modern lives. • Maybe that’s the reason why we waste it so stupidly.

POTENTIAL CONSUMPTION

Page 23: Water

• Saving on light: Just by using low consumption light bulbs instead of the

ordinary ones, we could save an 80 % of the energetic consumption.

Page 24: Water

• Central  Heating:  The  recommended temperature during the winter is from 22º C to 24º C. By  lowering  the  thermostat of our central  heating  we  save  up  to  7  %  on electricity  per  degree.  So  if  we  wear    a sweater instead of setting the heating to 24º C we will save approximately 14%.

2º C

Page 25: Water

• Television: Most of the modern TV have the possibility  of  being  set  to  a stand-by mode. But  that  mode  is  also  using  energy, approximately  a 15 percent of  the energy  it would  used when  it’s  switched  on  (about  3 hours  a  day).  Unplugging  our  television instead  of  setting  the stand-by  mode  could save an extra 70%.

Page 26: Water

• Ceramic hobs:Cooking is not something we can avoid. But the energy we waste on it could be reduced if we used a lid. That would mean a 25% cut on the energy we need to prepare a tasty and efficient meal.
