Drive down lifecycle costs with BIM methodologies

Reduce brownfield design costs by up to 30 percentUp to 30 percent of the design cost on a typical brownfield treatment plant project is spent on executing and processing site surveys and laser scans to address out-of-date and missing records. After projects end, drawings become out of date as equipment changes occur during operations and maintenance, forcing each project to repeat the cost of establishing an accurate as-built reference.

Bentley’s water and wastewater plant design solutions break this cycle. Through BIM methodologies, the solutions enable the construction of a data-rich intelligent asset model that is a single, current source of information for your enterprise. Field staff access the model and provide markups that engineers use to maintain an accurate as-built record that saves brownfield projects time and money.

Bentley’s solutions include software applications to create an accurate 3D model of your existing treatment plant using laser scan data or simple digital photographs. Additional applications complete your asset model with the automatic production of 2D drawings and linking to equipment specifications and other engineering data.

Asset Performance Modeling

As a water or wastewater treatment plant owner-operator, you face demanding challenges including aging infrastructure, increasing regulation, and diminishing water supplies. Building information modeling (BIM) design methodologies can enable you to transcend these challenges, reduce your total cost of ownership, and deliver high-quality, affordable services to your constituency.

From a technology perspective, a BIM strategy enables the integration of data-rich models and project information databases, to build a virtual representation of a project and all assets. All stakeholders can access reliable information, making collaboration easier, reducing risks, and improving ROI.

Bentley’s water and wastewater plant design solutions, comprised of integrated software applications and services, enable you to practically implement BIM methodologies to:

• Reduce brownfield design costs by up to 30 percent

• Reduce the time and cost of your project delivery

• Increase the efficiency of operations and maintenance

Reduce the time and cost of your project delivery

Increase the efficiency of operations and maintenanceEnsuring safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operations of your treatment plants requires a connected data environment across engineering, operations, and maintenance. An accurate central asset register is essential to linking, managing, and accessing data across your enterprise systems.

The intelligent digital asset model, developed with Bentley’s multi-discipline plant design and analysis solution, enables you to assign and store equipment tags for every physical component in your treatment plant. This asset register combines with Bentley’s asset lifecycle information management solution to deliver secure, accurate, and trusted information when and where it is needed.

For example, an operator inspecting a pipe gallery can access the intelligent model on a tablet device to immediately identify the chopper pump they are looking at, review its engineering specifications, get details on scheduled maintenance, and report a leak with accurate details that enable the operations team to quickly and efficiently plan corrective service.

Bentley’s multi-discipline plant design and analysis solution of integrated design, analysis, project information management, and collaboration applications and services enables your designers and contractors to produce a high-integrity multi-discipline model of your treatment plant.

The model accelerates coordination and reduces design cost by integrating all major aspects of your plant design. This includes civil grading for evaporation ponds, structural design of clarifiers, piping gallery layout, building design for control, blower, and co-generation facilities, as well as electrical controls for bar screen, conveyor, and sluice gate motors.

Bentley’s multi-discipline plant design and analysis solution also saves construction time and money. Through enhanced collaboration and coordination, the solution reduces design errors and thus reduces time-consuming and costly change orders. Automatic production of clear and accurate design deliverables, including 2D drawings and bills of material, eliminates additional delays and costs.

Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant ExpansionLocation: Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Organization: CH2M HILL

The CAN$ 158 million Phase II Expansion project for Skyway Wastewater Treatment Plant in Burlington, Ontario, will increase the plant’s rated capacity from 118 to 140 million liters per day, as well as implement tertiary treatment.

CH2M HILL used OpenPlant, AECOsim Building Designer, Bentley Raceway and Cable Management, ProjectWise, and other Bentley applications to model the existing plant and complete the expansion design. The collaborative BIM approach enabled CH2M HILL to:

• Reduce the cost of modeling the existing plant by 25 percent

• Connect team members in 10 global offices in Canada, the United States, and Australia, reducing coordination time by at least 50 percent

• Generate material quantities from the model in 75 percent less time

• Save the client CAN$ 1 million through accurate construction visualizing that enabled the existing plant to remain partially in service

Seafield Wastewater Treatment Works Thermal Hydrolysis Plant Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Organization: MWH

The primary goal of MWH’s GBP 14 million Seafield Wastewater Treatment project was to enhance treated sludge prior to entering the digestion system.

MWH used OpenPlant, AECOsim Building Designer, ProjectWise, and other Bentley applications to quickly create specification-driven pipework and model the above ground pipework. The team then shared the 3D model with the process pipework fabricator, odor control supplier, cable-routing subcontractor, and project stakeholders. The BIM approach enabled MWH to:

• Achieve a more cost-effective design through better information mobility and collaboration with suppliers

• Save one month of drafting time by eliminating the need to issue and check 2D pipework drawings

• Increase design quality by leveraging immersive visualization to spot clashes prior to construction and allow operations and maintenance to provide feedback early in the design process

• Deliver a complicated design that could be built in a tight space while keeping the existing plant operating

“Bentley’s integrated tools, ProjectWise collaboration environment, and commitment to lifecycle data use have

empowered us to achieve consistent authoring of plant, civil, and building information models. This allows us to develop and

validate content from anywhere across the globe, whether in office or on site, from a single source of truth.”

– Brent Mauti Architect, BIM / Technology Director CH2M HILL

“Bentley’s BIM software has allowed MWH to involve operation staff earlier in the design process. The ability to

walk around the design before it is built gives users a better understanding of the proposed design and allows them to

make comments on access, lifting, and maintenance issues. MWH sees this early communication between the designer

and the end user as a major benefit to producing a cost-effective and practical design.”

– David Bennett, Principal Mechanical Engineer, MWH

Transition to BIM methodologies with BentleyTransitioning to BIM design methodologies and achieving lower total cost of ownership for your treatment plant assets requires more than just introducing new software. It requires new skills and knowledge in your organization.

You will need to take a greater interest in how your EPCs perform your design work and carefully specify digital engineering models as project deliverables. You will also need to establish enterprise systems and processes to manage, maintain, and share your digital assets.

Bentley is your trusted industry partner to navigate these changes. Our range of software solutions and services is complemented by our BIM Advancement Academy program that works with organizations at all levels of the industry to educate their staff and the entire supply chain about BIM workflows.

Let our experts assess your level of BIM maturity and develop a tailored plan to implement BIM methodologies that enable lower total cost of ownership for your treatment plant assets.
