TRANSCRIPT
Water Consumption in Rice Current rice culture is a major freshwater which is 2-3 times
more than other cereals (Carriger and Valle´e, 2007; Tuong et al., 2005).
Rice consumes about 50% of total irrigation water used in
Asia (Barker et al., 1998).
It accounts for about 24–30% of the withdrawal of world
total freshwater and 34–43% of the world’s irrigation water (Bouman et al., 2007).
United Nations reported that “11% of population (783
million people) remains without access to drinking water.”
Looming crisis of water and labor threaten the
sustainability of PTR in Asia.
Rice Cultivation & Climate change 30% of total anthropogenic emission of
CH4 and N2O are from Agriculture
CH4 from Rice and Livestock production
N2O from Fertilizers and manure.
Flooded rice produces approx.
20–40 Mt of CH4 per year, or about
10–12% of anthropogenic emissions
from the agriculture sector globally.
At least 23 million ha of rice area (20%
of total rice area) in Asia is estimated to
be drought-prone (Pandey et al., 2006)
1. AWD in Transplanted
Safe AWD in PTR reduced water
input 15 - 30% without yield loss
2. DSR systems
DSR can safe water 30-50%
A big challenge for ScientistsHow we can
1. Mitigate Climate Change?
2. Save water in Rice production?3. Cultivate more area under rice by the
same amount of water?Solution for above Questions/Problems

Water Scarcity & &Over-usageAcross Asia rice yield could decline by as much as 50% by 2020 due to erratic weather patter & drought
Land & Deforestation6m ha of additional land producing food every year is needed, to feed future human population in 2050
Climate ChangeIncreases in global production of maize and wheat since 1980 would have been about 5% higher were it not for climate change

Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP)
Sustainable rice for global markets
All the points are linked with farmers Integrated fertilizer, pesticides
use, ecological impact, human rights, gender equality and much more
RPL is pioneer in launching SRP standard in Pakistan
Initially 100 farmers were selected for SRP Compliance
Audit conducted by 3rd Party and qualified.
