Efficient propeller-driven Photo-Fiber-Optic sensor coupled with precision quartz crystalcontrolled electronics provide accurate repeatable data in all flow conditions.

The Model 2100 Indicator reads data in feet and meters per second. A toggle switch in thebattery compartment changes from one to the other.

Powered by a single 9 volt transistor battery.Three user selectable velocity averaging times in each mode. From 5 to 90 seconds in feetper second and from 1.5 to 30 seconds in meters mode.

Sensor components (propeller, rotor, and rotor shaft) easily and inexpensively replaceable.Carry spares into remote locations and you’ll never have to return early because of a bentbucketwheel, lost sensor magnet or bent shaft.

The Model 2100 is a hand held current velocity meter designed specifically for the measurement of open channelvelocities.

The basic principle of the Swoffer sensor is simple; multiple bundles of fiber-optics, assembled into a propeller driven rotor, gate a beam of infraredlight from a photo diode to a photo-sensitive transistor. The rate of rotation of the of propeller rotor is directly proportional to water speed, therefore,pulses produced by the photo transistor over a given time are also directly proportional to water velocity.

The Model 2100 uses a propeller rotor which requires very little energy to activate, works in nearly all water conditions and produces consistent,strong output pulses even at low speeds. The calibration curve for the rotors is linear and consistent in all normally occurring open channelvelocities. The propellers used with the Model 2100 were specifically designed for use in water so they do not need a shroud to protect them fromthe effects of turbulence. Because no shroud is used the propellers are better able to shed and be cleaned of debris normally found in sewers andnatural streams.

The electronic half of the sensor (2100-A22) consists of the latest opto-electronics and is epoxy encapsulated in a ½” (12.7mm) diameter acetalresin housing for protection from chemicals and the elements. The sensor uses a two-wire signal system requiring only 3 volts for operation andcan generate an output signal through over 1000 feet of cable. The sensor consumes very little power, produces four pulses per revolution and canbe manufactured in a variety of configurations and, most of all, it is sturdy and reliable.

The standard version of the propeller rotor assembly (2100-A21) uses a very low friction fiber-optics rotor, a polished and hardened stainless steelshaft, and a 2” glass-filled nylon propeller. All rotor parts are easily replaceable in the field and spares are provided with every new instrument.

The RedBack

The standard operation of the current meter is used in conjunction with a wading rod and a current meter counter. This method requires the user to stand in the stream and observe the velocities of the flow at different depths across the streams. The current meter can be fitted with a stabiliser tail fin which is attached to a hanger bar attached and Colombus weight; 7, 15, 23, 34, 45, 68, 90 or 135 Kg. This assembly is suspended from a gauging winch with armoured signal cable. Hydrological Services provides a range of counters to suit the RedBack. The CMC20A is a basic counter which can be set to count pulses for a specific time period (10-200 secs). The counter stops when the time period has elapsed and shows a digital reading for the number of pulses. A rating table is used to convert number of pulses to velocity. The PVD100/CMCsp current meter counter with direct velocity reading, in-built Bluetooth module for connection to a PalmTM top or field PC, fixed measuring interval from 10 to 90 secs. The HydroMate CMC3 is the top of the range Current Meter Counter with a touch screen facility and direct velocity reading. This counter allows up to 32 current meter calibration formulas to be entered so that direct calculation of river flow can be acheived . The HydroMate CMC3 can store data for up to 30 sites with 30 verticals per site and 11 points per vertical. The CMC3 software can be easily upgraded as new features are made available.

DESCRIPTION: The Hydrological Services Point Velocity Display (PVD100) is a small electronic device used to "clean" the signal from a mechanically rotating current meter such as a Price AA or Pygmy meter and directly reads the velocity on the LCD as well as interfacing to a PDA for computation of velocity and discharge. Meters using a cat whisker head and ball and wire contact to perform a mechanical switch closure can be used with the PVD100 to produce a clean, noise-free signal. Whenever the PVD100 is connected to a hand-held computer and the current meter bucket wheel completes a contact closure, the PVD100 can simultaneously produces four responses: 1) Sounds a buzzer tone; 2) Emits a flash from an LED indicator on the front panel, 3) Updates the LCD count and timer, and 4) Transmits a serial data value at 1-second intervals representing the number of contact closures and elapsed time through the serial interface. The PVD100 uses two AA batteries for operation and is connected between the current meter and the hand-held computer using either a connecting lead or an optional Bluetooth wireless interface. A program running in the hand-held computer sends commands to the PVD100 to perform a measurement.

The most important operating features of the PVD100 are as follows: 1- Direct Velocity Reading

2- User Serial Interface Program for entering 2 current meters with up to 3 rating equations for each current meter.

3- The ability to signal process each contact closure from any type of meter. For cat whisker contacts, this becomes extremely important since cat whisker contacts offer the poorest quality for marking and counting rotations.

4- The PVD100 offers (2) modes of operation, i.e. NORMAL and SLOW speed mode. NORMAL is selected for meter rotations >0.25 ft/sec while SLOW mode is for velocities below 0.25ft/sec. To improve noise rejection, the sample rate of the input signal at the SLOW speed mode (lower velocities) is 1/10 of the sampling rate that occurs during NORMAL mode.

5- The ability to detect faulty connections from the meter through the wading rod to connected PVD100. During power up of the PVD100, a calibration of the input signal is performed.

6- The ability to detect a signal short during a measurement. If such a condition is detected, the ‘*’ symbol is displayed until the fault condition is removed.

Continuous Flow Monitoring Under Complex Conditions

Reversing flow? Rapid changes? Tidal influence? Pumping? Backwater? Under ice? Small, portable and easy to use, the Argonaut-SW is your friend for all these challenging shallow-water conditions. The SW operates in depths from 0.2 to 5.0 meters (0.7 to 16 ft) and automatically adjusts its velocity cell with changing water level while also reporting a velocity profile for subsequent analysis. Just provide power, and the SW can either output data in real time or record data internally for periodic downloads.

How it Works

The Argonaut-SW has three acoustic beams. When properly bottom-mounted (usually in a channel), one of these beams points straight up, and the other two point up/down stream at a 45-degree angle. The upward-looking beam measures water level. The two slanted beams measure the water velocity in two dimensions via the acoustic Doppler method.

Profiling water velocity provides a more accurate depiction of flow characteristics, enabling use under conditions where stratification exists. This level and velocity information is then used (together with the geometry of the channel) to compute flow, volume, mean velocity, and area.

The HOBO Water Level Logger is a high-accuracy, pressure-based water level recording device that combines research-grade accuracy and durability with a price tag that is roughly half the cost of most comparable solutions. DESCRIPTIONINW’s patented PS9800 submersible pressure transmitter represents thelatest in state-of-the-art level measurement technology. Building on years ofsuccessful experience, this industry standard two-wire, 4-20 mA deviceoffers improved noise immunity, thermal performance and transientprotection. In addition to reverse polarity protection, under-current andover-current limitation is featured on both transmitter channels. An optional4-20 mA temperature measurement is available as a second channel withinthe device.

The updated cable harness design reduces the probability of leakage andprotects the cable jacket from damage by providing double-sealing; 316stainless steel, Viton ® and Teflon ® construction increases corrosionresistance. The transmitter’s end cone is interchangeable with a 1/4” NPTinlet which allows for increased application use, easy hookup and fieldcalibration. The modular-designed PS9800 may be easily factory servicedand repaired.

OPERATIONThe PS9800 pressure transmitter is powered by a datalogger or controlsystem. The internal electronic circuit controls the amount of current flowingthrough the loop based on the signal from the internal pressure sensor. Anabove-surface probe will draw 4 mA and once submerged, the current flowincreases linearly with pressure (or depth). At full-scale pressure (depth),the transmitter will draw 20 mA. A data acquisition/or control system thenmeasures this current and computes the pressure or level.

APPLICATIONSDue to its rugged construction and proven reliability, the PS9800 is usedsuccessfully to monitor groundwater, well, tank and tidal levels, as well asfor pump testing and flow monitoring.

These sensors are compatible with the Mace AgriFlo, FloPro and HVFlo ultrasonic flow meters.

STRAP MOUNT (VELOCITY ONLY) SENSORThis sensor is used to measure velocity in full pipes when access to the pipe is available and the pipe can be emptied when installation or maintenance is required. It can also be used in situations where the user is measuring depth by a third party or ultrasonic sensor.

The sensor is first mounted on a polypropylene mounting strap and then installed within the pipe.

Description:The model TSR Top Setting Wading Rods weredeveloped to simplify the task of the hydrographerwhile carrying out gauging of small streams.The TSR shall only be used in shallow streams,where it is safe for the hydrographer to carry outgauging while wading.

The TSR is available in Metric and Imperial modelsand each model is available in lengths of 4 feet(1200mm), 6 feet (1800mm) and 8 feet (2400mm).

The Top Setting Wading Rods are manufacturedfrom durable materials selected to meet theenvironmental conditions in the field.

Operation:

After mounting the appropriate current meter on the rod andconnecting the cable, place the Top Setting Wading Rodvertically in the stream at the appropriate point in the crosssection, ensuring that the base plate is stable and that the meter isdirected into the flow. Read off the depth of stream on theGRADUATED ROD.

The current meter can be readily set at 0.2, 0.6 and 0.8 of thedepth of water by aligning the appropriate graduation on theSUSPENSION ROD with the appropriate graduation on thevernier scale. For more information about how to operate the TSRplease refer to the manual.

The WS400 Gauging Winch is a hand operated winch capable of handling Gauging Weights up to 70 Kg (154 lb).

The WS400 is a very compact unit and has been designed for ease of operation and serviceability in the field. The structure of material has kept the weight to a minimum, so that it can be handled easily by one person.

Special features include –

1- Weston Brake: Providing safe and smooth sounding op- eration.

2- The WS400, when fitted to a winch frame with outrigger assembly, can be used on boats or off bridges. A light weight trolley can also be used for bridge gauging.

3- Sounding Drum: Cast Alu- minium 320mm Circumfer- ence, fitted with silver plated slipring, and depth counter registering in centimeters.

Description

WHAT IS THE HORNET PLUS? The Hornet Plus has been developed to perform river and stream discharge measurements from fixed cableways using either conventional Columbus Type Gauging Weights and Mechanical Type Current Meters or Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The Hornet Plus is an ideal solution for retro fitting to an existing manned cableway system, thus minimising the personal injury risk associated with this type of gauging.

HOW DOES THE HORNET PLUS OPERATES? The Hornet Plus is operated from the bank of the stream. Using a wireless remote control (see Figure 1), which incorporates the latest state of art electronics and Radio Controlled Systems, the operator can manoeuvre the Mechanical Current Meter by the push of a switch to traverse across the span to be measured. Once into position, the meter is lowered to commence measurement. The Control System operates an electric motor fitted with incremental encoder to drive the carriage and hoist from the operating side to the far side of the river and back to the start point (see Figure 2-3). The operator uses the Remote Controlled Hoist to raise and lower the Mechanical Current Meter into and out of the water. (See Figure 2-3). Prior to Discharge Measurements:

The Hornet Plus takes a few minutes to set up and become operational. The operator needs to do the following:

a) Attach the Hoist to the Carriage b) Attach the Gauging Weight and Mechanical

Current Meter to the Hoist c) Connect the Current Meter to the

Amergraph cable d) Switch power on to operate the Hoist e) Connect to 1000Watt Generator or Mains

to power Control System

To Commence Discharge Measurements:Once the system is ready to use, the operator can lower the Current Meter in the water, and carry out accurate measurements.
