Hydrological

balance Slovakia rainfall (R), evapotranspiration (Et) and outflow (O) (R -

753 mm = Et 492 mm + O 261 mm).

lowland up to 300 AMSL, low highland with 590 mm rainfall (41 % of the territory), low highlands from 301 to 750 AMSL. with 801 mm rainfall (45%), middle highland 751 –

1500 AMSL with 993 mm (13%) high highland 1501 –

2655 AMSL with 1393 mm (1% of the territory).

Total amount of rainfall in a

year represents 36.62 km3 of water. Yearly water use is about 12 km3.

Article 2 General

objectives

and

principles1. The Parties shall pursue a comprehensive policy and cooperate for the protection and sustainable development of the Carpathians with a view to inter alia improving

quality

of

life,

strengthening local economies and communities, and conservation of natural values and cultural heritage.

Sustainable

and

integrated water/river

basin

management

Taking into account the hydrological, biological and ecological, and other specificities of mountain river basins, the Parties shall:(a) take appropriate measures to promote policies integrating sustainable use of water resources, with land-use planning, and aim at pursuing policies and plans based on an integrated river basin management approach, recognizing the importance of pollution and flood management, prevention and control, and reducing water habitats fragmentation, (b) pursue policies aiming at sustainable management of surface and groundwater resources,
