Collection of Project References: Dams

Concrete dams can withstand enormous loads. However, they also age rapidly if not effectively protected. After only a few years or decades, the first signs of damage become apparent. Breakouts, cracks and fatigue are the inevitable consequences, resulting in significant safety risks in some cases.

The professionals involved in the refurbishment of dams and the materials used must therefore meet very stringent requirements. Frequently, large numbers of massive cracks need to be repaired rapidly in order to avoid uncontrolled water loss and the resulting hazards.

The objective is not just to provide a temporary solution for acute problems but to sustainably restore the condition of the dam and to ensure that it remains fit for service for many years.

Using BASF’s professional waterproofing products and concrete refurbishment specialists, dams throughout the world are restored to a stable, safe condition. Details of some specific projects are given here to give you an indication of our performance capabilities.

Collection of Project References:Channels and Aqueducts

Channels and aqueducts are exposed to severe risks as a result of external factors such as flooding and water pollution. In some cases, these may considerably impair the performance of the system, leading to unintentional water loss or contamination of the surrounding soil, sometimes at considerable cost.

The demands of channel refurbishment projects are therefore very high, especially for channels routed through sensitive zones such as water protection areas.

Environmental compatibility, durability, watertightness, load-bearing capacity and reliable functioning are therefore key criteria for the selection of the materials to be used. As the international projects presented below show, waterproofing products under the Master Builders Solutions brand from BASF are the perfect match for these requirements in all the relevant applications.

Channel Cova da Beira | Covilhã, Portugal

Projectdescription:

The Cova da Beira channel starts at the Meimoa Dam water intake, which was completed in 1984. The intention of building the channel was to develop the agricultural industry within the region. The Cova da Beira channel was built in several phases and was completed in 2009. The channel was designed in a trapezoidal transverse form with a width of 2 m and a height of 2.30 m.

Assignment: Sealing of expansion joints in a water irrigation channel.

Scope of project: 86,000 m of sealed joints

Main challenges: From the construction perspective these structures are challenging as they are exposed to different climate conditions that create high expansion and contraction movements due to thermal effects. Changes in the quantity of transported water and in soil humidity also create movements in the structure. Because of this it was necessary to construct a structure able to accommodate this movement. This was done by constructing joints within the structure which had to be sealed with an elastic product that could maintain this elasticity for a long period of time and was suited to constant immersion in water. Collection of Project References:Water Reservoirs and Water Towers

Potable water is the most essential resource for human life. The central task of the water industry is to supply people with drinking water and to ensure that the water is handled and stored without any problems. Potable water storage tanks must therefore be in perfect technical and hygienic condition.

Potable water towers and reservoirs are structures with very long service lives, designed to last for several decades. Damage to material structures when exposed to the atmosphere or to a changing imposed loads may have an adverse impact on the hygiene or watertightness of the structure.

When refurbishing systems of this type, it is therefore important to ensure that the surfaces of any components in contact with water are as smooth and free from pores and other irregularities as possible, as well as being easy to clean. Choosing waterproofing products under the Master Builders Solutions brand from BASF – in combination with professional processing – guarantees you trouble-free long-term use. The following reference projects are proof of just that.

Collection of Project References:Waste Water Treatment Plants

Concrete structures at waste water treatment plants face a variety of operational and environmental demands. While the purpose of a sewer is to carry waste water to the treatment plant without any loss and without any detrimental impact on the environment, the purpose of a water treatment plant is to convert dirty, contaminated water into water that can be re-used again in agricultural and industrial facilities or even as drinking water. This means that non-stop operations of the plans require that infrastructure is in good condition, water-tight and durable.

Concrete waste water lines are thus continuously exposed to extremely aggressive substances such as biogenic sulfuric acid which may cause material damage, and cracks that can lead to severe environmental hazards.

Using waterproofing products under the Master Builders Solutions brand from BASF, waste water systems can be durably refurbished, preventing pollution of the groundwater by waste water and maintaining effective operation of the plants. The reference projects presented on the following pages will show you the effectiveness of these products in specific applications.

Projectdescription:

SLOVNAFT a.s., from Bratislava, is a petrochemical refinery company. Following extensive modernization, the SLOVNAFT a.s. refinery provides a large degree of convertibility and flexibility, and as a result it belongs among the three most advanced refineries in Europe. Installed conversion processes, as well as the complex large-scale desulphurisation unit, enable the production of sulphur- free engine fuels. Innovative and environmentally friendly production is supported by the refinery’s newly refurbished waste management system.

Assignment: Repair of tanks of wastewater management system.

Scope of project: Repair approx. 800 m², contraction joints approx. 1,000 mWaterproofing approx. 4,500 m², protective coating approx. 1,500 m²

Main challenges: The repair system required an application thickness of – up to 30 mm, high thixotropy, absence of polymer modification and suitability for application on wet substrate. For the waterproofing membrane, the main challenge was resistance to chemicals used in the water treatment plant environment, ensuring watertightness and high adhesion to the substrate. For the protective coating, a cementitious, chemically resistant coating able to be applied on a wet substrate in a treatment plant environment was required.

Products used: 1. MasterEmaco repair mortarsTo repair concrete and reshape damaged areas.2. MasterSeal 588To waterproof structure, protecting concrete from water penetration.3. MasterSeal 531For sulphate-resistant concrete waterproofing.4. MasterSeal 930For sealing joints on the surface, preventing water penetration and allowing joint movement.5. Hogsmill WTW

Projectdescription:

Hogsmill sewage treatment works is located in Surbiton by the Hogsmill River, a tributary of the River Thames. About 2 km from the centre of Kingston Upon Thames, the works serves a population of approximately 330,000.

Assignment: To encapsulate two primary settlement tanks with “Bio Domes”; to reduce odours in the surrounding residential area and harvest the methane produced.

Scope of project: Concrete repair and waterproofing coating to 600 m²

Main challenges: The refurbishment programme involved the removal by hydro demolition of a cantilevered rim of concrete, the repair and re-profiling of the concrete surface to falls as necessary and the installation of a new concrete link bridge within each tank. The effect of encapsulating the tanks increased the microbiological activity and subsequent acidity within the atmosphere. A suitable coating was required to protect the concrete from the new environmental conditions.

Products used: 1. MasterEmaco repair mortarsThis was poured into the shutter to cast a level surface onto which the “Bio Dome” was secured. The internal falls prevented the ponding of acidic solutions within the encapsulated tank.2. MasterSeal M 689After 24 hours the internal concrete surface was sprayed with this product to create a protective waterproofing membrane.
