The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District) is a division of the Atlanta Regional Commission and manages a comprehensive, integrated plan for water supply and water conservation, wastewater and watershed management for the 15-county metro Atlanta region.
Water Reflections2017 Calendar
Broken Rules – Kimberly Quamme Miller, Peachtree City, GA (Photo location: Lake Peachtree)
Living on Lake Peachtree, I enjoy its beauty every day. I float, ski and swim in this water. I watch the animals make their homes here. I clean the shores, perplexed that people are so careless with their trash in a place they must enjoy as much as I do. When the city drained Lake Peachtree, much of the garbage lay on the lake bed. My family took part in cleanups of the lake then and continue to do so.
About the Water Reflections Calendar Photo ContestMetro Atlanta is home to many beautiful waterways like Lake Lanier, Allatoona Lake and the Chattahoochee, Flint, Yellow and Etowah Rivers. These lakes and rivers provide metro Atlantans with more than just recreational and photo opportunities. They are our region’s water supply!
The 2016 Water Reflections Calendar Photo Contest participants were asked to capture the beauty, heritage, activities and character of metro Atlanta’s water resources and to describe what the water resource in their photo entry meant to them. More than 40 professional and amateur photographers participated in the contest, with more than 100 photo entries taken at locations all over the region. The cover photo, Sophie Leading the Way by Jeff Shell of Acworth, is our Grand Prize winner and is also featured for the month of June.
A special “Thank you” goes out to Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites for providing annual memberships as part of the prize package for our contest winners this year. We greatly appreciate the work Friends does to partner with, promote and preserve Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites.
Stormwater Pollution Prevention in Action!!When it rains, water runs off the land. As it flows over rooftops, lawns, driveways and streets, this stormwater can pick up pollutants such as dirt, motor oil, fertilizer, litter and pet waste. Many of these pollutants are carried into storm drains and drainage ditches by stormwater that flows untreated into our rivers, lakes and streams. To help prevent stormwater pollution, we must refrain from littering, bag our yard debris and pet waste and properly dispose of all hazardous household wastes so that we can ensure cleaner waterways.
The Metro Water District provides tools and resources to local jurisdictions and citizens to address stormwater pollution. Over the past year, the Metro Water District has held workshops, promoted its Clean Water Campaign and engaged partners all to better manage our stormwater runoff.
This year, an additional prize was awarded for the best photo that highlighted stormwater pollution prevention. Broken Rules by Kimberly Quamme Miller is our winner and is featured above. See Kimberly’s caption and remember to practice good stormwater pollution prevention habits!

JANUARY Wintering Bufflehead – Danielle Bunch, Jonesboro, GA (Photo location: Clayton County Water Authority’s Constructed Wetland)
Clayton County Constructed Wetlands not only recycle about 80 percent of the county’s wastewater, they are also wintering habitat for thousands of waterfowl. As a conservationist and CCWA employee, I am proud to be part of such a sustainable company.

Water is precious to me. I’m from Zimbabwe, a country with constant water restrictions. I appreciate the luxury we have here to be able to turn on a faucet and have clean water for various purposes. It is a simple natural resource but a lot of people undervalue it.
