WATER TO LIVE
ENGLISH WORKS BY
1ST ESO STUDENTS
INTRODUCTION
• The Comenius Project is focused on water and its relevance in our lives. This topic has been divided into four areas of work: - Water around us- Water as a link among cultures- Water as a source of life - Water within folklore (rites, traditions...)
• Within this framework, I have asked my 1st ESO students to work on two of these areas:- Water around us- Water as a source of life
• They have developed brief essays on the following aspects:- Water for energy: water energy, steam power…- Water for food: fishing, agriculture.- Water for fun: water sports and parks, tourism, spas…- Water for inspiration: literature, cinema and tales.
GOALS
1. To use English for comunication, focusing on accuracy since students are expected to produce written texts.
2. To value English as a way to establish relationships with people from other countries and cultures.
3. To use ICTs in an efficient and autonomous way, in order to find out relevant information.
4. To develop a critical attitude and respect for the environment and environmental problems.
5. To reflect about the importance of water in our lives and to foster responsibility in its use.
6. To value artistic and creative uses of the English language as a source of inspiration for their own productions.
WATER FOR ENERGY
Those students who chose this topic made a research on a variety of aspects related to science. Some of them decided to deal with water energy and the production of hydro-electric power. Others wrote about steam machines and another group dealt with the water cycle.
The following are some examples of these works.
WATER FOR FOOD
Some students have researched on fishing as an economic activity in the area. Those students have dealt with types of boats and fishing techniques, species, typical seafood…
Some other students decided to research on the use of water in agriculture, since it is one of the most important sources of work and money in the town.
WATER FOR FUN
The sea is very close to our town, and besides there is a
river which flows through the town. Thus, it is no surprise
that water is part of our daily lives also for leisure.
Students who focused on this topic have dealt with tourism
in the beaches of Huelva, Doñana national park and water
sports.
WATER FOR INSPIRATION
This topic includes a wide variety of aspects. Students were free to be creative and make their own compositions (visual poems and comics), copy and illustrate poems or write a summary of sea films or literature. Some others have dealt with famous mythological or literary characters.
