See how we used one of our favorite products: canvases

made for watercolors!

NICE SLICEFor colors that blend easily, try the wet-on-wet technique: Just brush water onto the canvas before applying colors. P.S. For extra depth of color, we used two shades for each fruit (pink and orange for the grapefruit, green and yellow for lime, etc.)

NEW DIMENSIONSOne out-of-the-ordinary way to watercolor? Go 3D. Cut out petals and leaves from watercolor paper, then paint each piece how you want it. Glue them to your canvas in layers, and you’re set.

STROKEOF GENIUSHey, beginners! This technique’s easy as can be. Dab on watercolors using various sizes/shapes of foam brushes—they’ll give you more control, so you won’t have to deal with colors spreading and blending as much as with paintbrushes.

GLEAM SQUADHow to infuse your watercolors with elegance: Add gold leaf. Here, our twirling girl got shimmer around the perimeter with gold leaf metal sheets and brush-on adhesive—just follow the package’s instructions to apply it to your finished painting.

LEAF IT BEThe secret to nice, crisp lines for your watercolor works? Stencils. For even more precision, outline the shape using watercolor pencils—they’ll blend right in as you paint. Tip: For confined splatters, place the stencil back over your finished design and cover the other stencil openings. Then splatter away!

HAD TO MASKMasking fluid is a watercolorer’s best friend. Its waterproof formula keeps white spaces white while you paint, and it peels right off when you’re done. Plus, it comes in pen form, which means clean lines with no mess—we used one for all the outlining here.

LET’S ROCKAll hail colorful, trendy agate slices. To paint one of your own, start by outlining your design in sections before applying colors. (Bleeding colors welcome!) To make the paints go splotchy, the trick is to sprinkle on salt while the paint is wet.

SWIRL STUDYBy taping off a portion of your canvas, you narrow the focal point to what matters. And for colors that swirl perfectly, look to alcohol blending solutions—we loaded ours into a mini misting bottle (with some water) to get a realistic aurora.

From the cover: Use waterproof calligraphy ink to outline your drawing, then fill it in with watercolor paints.

Yep, it’s salt! Salt reacts with wet paint, making the colors disperse in splotchy patterns.

WRITE IN STYLEFor just-right watercolor calligraphy, try watercolor brush pens. The body of the pen

holds water, so there’s no dipping—just squeeze to release water, load the brush with color, and write away. Tip: Experiment with various brush nibs to achieve different styles.

Idea: Try outlining your design with gel pens!
