How waterfalls are formed

• Waterfalls are formed when there is a layer soft rock is underneath a layer of harder rock.

• The soft rock is eroded by the flowing water of the river. Eventually the soft rock is eroded so much that the hard rock is hanging over the edge.

• Meanwhile a plunge pool is formed at the bottom. The overhanging hard rock falls into the plunge pool and is broken down and carried off in the rest of the river.

• Now the hard rock and soft rock are equal. This keeps happening so the cycle is continuous.
