News Update

27th February 2020

Dear Families,

Welcome back to our second half term. We are all very relieved to see the light returning in the morning and after school.

This half term is always a personal favourite of mine, as the children seem truly settled and we real-ly begin to see them make a lot of progress.

As in Term 1, this term will close with ‘Open Sessions’ – in which you will be able to see and share a showcase of the children’s hard work. To finish the term, Year 4 will be providing us with a Spring Concert – supported by their friends in Year 3. I know Mr Lilley and Mrs Underwood are hard at

work adapting the script and writing songs for us all to enjoy. A number of other key events will also be happening: we will be celebrating our love of literature on ‘World Book Day’, stretching our muscles and learning about physiology and anatomy through ‘Sports Relief Week’ not to mention some year groups enjoying exciting trips.

It is always important to remember that ‘everyday’ we are working hard to provide ALL the children with a wider range of op-portunities during playtimes. This additional provision started with our hugely successful ‘Singing Playground’ – Mrs Under-wood is now working hard with the ‘Song Leaders’ (in addition to the open choir sessions) to make sure our playtimes are alive with song and games. In addition the ‘Outdoor Project’ are providing lunchtime adventure sessions in the new outdoor class-room – this is open to all as a drop in on Thursdays. Mrs Billington’s Computer Club runs daily as well as HIGH QUALITY sports being run by expert external coaches – Basketball with Storm Basketball (Tuesdays), Cricket with Sussex Cricket (Wednesdays), Multisport with Sports Direct (Thursdays). We would love to provide other opportunities for the children at lunchtimes, so if you would like to offer a craft session in the library or perhaps a gardening session for an hour do let us know.

Finally, we are keeping our TWITTER updated with all the superb goings on at Waterfield so do please follow us – @Waterfield_TCT – this really is a great way to get a snapshot of all the wonderful events and learning opportunities being offered at school. Sadly, we currently only have a few followers so it would be great to get some more.

Please do also sing up for School Ping as this continues to be the method of ESSENTIAL communication.

Kind regards,

Dr Harry Hope

On Thursday 5th March Waterfield will celebrate World Book Day! Special Events will be put on throughout the day to celebrate our love of literature. In order to prepare for this Magical Day we are inviting children if they wish to: ACCESS-A-BOOK - GUESS-A-BOOK Based on feedback regarding all children dressing up in costume we are proposing the following to advocate a more inclusive day for ALL.

We would like as many children as possible to bring in a copy of their favourite book (or a picture of their favourite book). To accompany their favourite book children may, if they wish, accessorize themselves to represent a character or aspect of their book. This could be as simple as bringing a prop/item in to represent something from the book (this could be just one homemade item i.e you may bring Peter Pan’s panpipes, make Captain Pugwash’s pirate hat or even bring in a magic wand), or they may wish to wear a few accessories to represent clues to a character in the book (a simple cloak and hat may represent Harry Potter, a tiger’s tail and a cup and saucer for the ‘Tiger who came to Tea’ or a pair of rabbit ears and a pocket watch for the White Rabbit). There is no need for anyone to go and purchase a full costume (unless you wish to): you may accessorize as much or as little as you like. The idea of this approach is to allow everyone to feel comfortable and be able to join in without a great deal of cost. The children will then be invited to give clues to their book through the accessories they are showcasing. How creative can you be giving clues to the identity of your mystery book? Launching ‘GET CAUGHT READING’ Competition We would like the children to bring in a photo of themselves or their family reading a book in an unusual place/position. This could be anywhere… up a tree, on a bridge, in supermarket trolley… even upside down. The most unusual and inspirational photo from each ‘School’ will win a BOOK TOKEN for themselves and a PACK OF SURPRISE BOOKS for their class. Closing dates for photos is Friday 6th March – but ideally try and bring these on WORLD BOOK DAY. GRAB-A-BOOK Book Swap After school we will run a Book SWAP – here children may bring in an old book they have read and swap it for another from a table in the playground. You may wish to bring in a bag of books to donate and then take one home. Any surplus books will then be donated to the classes. This is a great way of the children getting a FRESH book by REUSING and also for us all to ben-efit from some fresh books in our class reader libraries. READING TOGETHER As ever the most important things to do to celebrate books is to share a story together as a family, we hope that on World Book Day each and every family will snuggle down that very evening and take turns in reading a story! In order that ALL chil-dren see adults reading we would love the children to annotate their reading record with the book YOU are reading – signing off your daily reading. There will be many other literary based activities on the day including a special story time with teachers and adults across the school, reading buddy session not to mention the chance to make and do some more creative things to celebrate our love of reading. Every child will also receive a £1 World Book Day token provided to all children across the UK. Specially published books can be purchased at outlets with this £1 or it can be redeemed against a more expensive item in most book stores.

Remember to follow our TWITTER to keep up with all the adventures of Waterfield World Book Day 2020! @WATERFIELD_TCT

We will use your donation to refresh our library books.

Thank you for your continuous support

On Thursday 12th March 2020 Sing Up will be holding their annual

Sing Up day.

At Waterfield we will be celebrating the power of song with lots

of singing throughout the school day. From nursery rhymes to

pop songs, our aim is to sing our way through the day.

Each class will choose their own favourite song, which is relevant to them plus

the whole school will be singing this years’ Sing Up day anthem ‘There’s a

power in the music’.

We will also be recording this song in a whole school assembly to form part of an online

digichoir. Lookout for this video, which will be posted on the school website in due course.

PTA NEWS

We have had some great feedback about our masked disco and you helped to raise just over £400 for the school so the PTA would like to thank you all for your support. We will be putting this money towards money raised from Mother’s Day gifts and will let you know the total and where it will be spent in due course. Mother’s Day ‘shop’ will be open from Monday 16th March until Thursday 19th March. Your child will be able to choose and purchase a gift for £1 each. Classes will be allocated a day to bring their money in and visit the ‘shop’ so, please make sure the money is brought in on the correct day as unfortunately they won’t be able to visit on another day.

PTA members work hard to make sure children at Waterfield have fun and enjoy all events and activities, however, as most of us work full time now we need to be very well organised and we regret to say that we won’t be able to accept any late payments as this cause us extra work and worry. Thank you in advance.

Lookout for the Easter movie afternoon, date to be confirmed!! Many thanks The PTA

Pancake Day was celebrated around the school. All year groups took part in making and eating

delicious pancakes! Children used their measuring skills, they learned about ingredients and followed

cooking instructions, and some even took part in a pancake race!
