Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city, was founded on this site by the Vikings in 1016 and remained of strategic importance to Ireland through the Norman, Georgian and Victorian periods and in to the 20th century.

In 2010 Waterford city council began the process of breathing life back into this historic quarter with the launch of the Viking Triangle and the start of an ambitious investment plan. The journey continues and in just a few short years, the Viking Triangle has become a vibrant place to live, work and visit, with a host of things to do and places to eat and relax.

Standing majestically at the apex of the Viking triangle sits Reginald’s Tower, the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland. It is alleged that it was in the tower that Strongbow met Aoife daughter of the King of Leinster Dermot MacMurrough and their subsequent marriage at Christ Church Cathedral in the city was to change Irish History for ever. Follow the pretty medieval streets to unlock over 1000 years of history in 1000 paces with nine national monuments and three world class museums; Viking, Medieval & Georgian. See the Theatre Royal, our breathtaking horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatre located next to City Hall on the Mall and discover the rich craft heritage behind the global brand Waterford Crystal which showcases the largest collection of Waterford Crystal in the world.

We welcome you to our Viking Triangle at the heart of our city and county, a jewel in the crown of Ireland’s Ancient East.

WATERFORD VIKING TRIANGLE EVENT GUIDE

Learn the stories of a place and you’ll come to understand the soul of its people. From ancient high kings to modern day poets, saints and scholars to ramblers and fishermen, Ireland’s Ancient East pulsates with legendary tales. With the maps as your guide and the itineraries as your inspiration, you can prepare for a real life journey through this mystical place. It all begins right here, in this lush green landscape. Over 5,000 years of history lie buried within the verdant meadows, bustling towns and rugged stone monuments of Ireland’s Ancient East. Each landmark has its stories to tell, as indeed do the locals, who delight in telling tales that are rich in famous battles and magic rituals.

“The Academy of Urbanism”, Great Place category have shortlisted The Viking Triangle. This is a great honour given the calibre of competitors in this category, shortlisted competitors include Greenwich Market and Leicester Market in The UK.

The Awards, which celebrate and learn from great placemaking, cover five categories of scale, including European City of the Year and Great- Place; Town; Neighbourhood & Street.

The Urbanism Awards are the Academy’s primary platform for recognising the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments. To date the awards have visited, assessed and celebrated 150 outstanding examples of leading urbanism across the UK, Ireland and Europe. As well as providing a means to build relationships with Great Places, the Awards assist in building a strong evidence base for high quality, innovative and sustainable urbanism. The learning is shared through publications, journals, website, networks and events.

The Academy’s assessment visit to The Viking Triangle will be scheduled some time between July and September, with a final vote conducted by the Academic panel and selection of the winner in each of the 5 categories in October, in advance of The Urbanism Award’s Ceremony in November. Old or new, large or small, The Academy of

Academy of Urbanism: Great Place…

Irelands Ancient East

Urbanism look for places that encourage a high quality of life and perform well in the following areas: Leadership and Governance, Local Character, Amenity, Commercial Success & Viability, Environmental Sustainability, Community Health and Wellbeing and Connectivity.

Fiona McHardy Chief Executive of The Viking Triangle Trust commented “The Viking Triangle is honoured to be recognised by The Academy of Urbanism’s prestigious Urbanism Awards. Our short listing as one of three finalists in the Great Place category, recognises and celebrates great places and highlights best practice destinations, with a range of European competitors. Our vision to create a vibrant, authentic and distinctive urban cultural and heritage quarter in Ireland’s oldest city is well underway. It is about creating a unique identity and tourism proposition based on our authentic connections with our Viking Past. This award recognises the commitment of the many stakeholders both public and private sector to our destination development. The Viking Triangle destination quarter is being recognised as a cornerstone and an anchor attraction for the south east region, one that will encourage both domestic and international visitors to increase their dwell time and spend in our region. This recognition compliments our current Three Sisters, European Capital of Culture bid 2020”.

“Vadrarfjord” founded in 914 AD, is real life evidence of the Viking age across Ireland’s Ancient East, a Viking settlement that became a flourishing port. Visit Reginald’s Tower a landmark 12th century building named in honour The Viking Reginald, situated at the apex of the Viking Triangle it houses the treasures of Viking Waterford. Today’s narrow streets and medieval walls of the Viking Triangle stand on its original footprint. There’s Georgian Christ Church Cathedral, too, on the site of the Viking church where the great Anglo-Norman knight Strongbow famously married the Irish princess Aoife.

Explore the precious artefacts housed in The Three Museums of Waterford Treasures, within a few steps you are in the Medieval Museum’s shadowy underground Choristers’ Hall and Mayor’s Wine Vault. You can experience the modern galleries above which house the sumptuous Cloth of Gold Vestments unique in northern Europe, or the illuminated Great Charter Roll defending the city’s monopoly on wine imports. Wander through the elegant Georgian interiors and furnishings in the neighbouring Bishop’s Palace, surely the 1789 decanter, the oldest surviving piece of Waterford Crystal, is among treasures to covet.

Nearby in the House of Waterford Crystal you can see master craftsmen creating modern day treasures on the factory tour or wander through the world’s largest Waterford Crystal showroom right in the heart of The Viking Triangle. Immerse yourself in 1,000 years of history within 1,000 paces in the heart of Waterford’s Viking Triangle.

the revolt in 1535. As a result, the former mayor of Waterford, William Wyse – appointed to the royal court in London at this time – was sent back by the king to Waterford on 30 April 1536, with a Cap of Maintenance as a gift.

The king instructed that it was to be carried before the Mayor of Waterford on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of the king’s high esteem for the city. A Cap of Maintenance was symbolically carried before the king on his way to coronation.

For centuries the cap was carried before the mayor, with the tradition only ending in 1920 with the election of Dr. Vincent White. Fortunately, succeeding generations understood its historic significance and the Cap was relegated to the secure vault in City Hall. In 1998 it was conserved and prepared for exhibition at Waterford Treasures at the Granary; and when the new Medieval Museum opened in 2012, it was put on display in a specially constructed circular showcase.

The Cap is a link with a time in our city’s history when Waterford was on the crest of a wave and held in high esteem by one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe.

Visit The Medieval Museum in the heart of Waterford’s Viking Triangle for more information www.waterfordtreasures.com

The Cap of Maintenance was a gift from King Henry VIII to the Mayor of Waterford, which was received in April 1536. The fact that an item as fragile as the red velvet Cap should survive for over four and a half centuries is remarkable. Through all the vicissitudes of the wars of religion and conquest, it is extraordinary how an item of such posterity, one so intimately connected to one of the most notorious monarchs in European history, should survive here in Waterford.

The red velvet Cap of Maintenance is embroidered with Tudor roses and marguerites (daisies). The embroidered roses represented the red rose of England, the symbol of the Tudor monarchy. The daisy, or marguerite, was

the emblem of Henry’s grandmother, the famous Margaret of Beaufort. There can be little doubt that the cap was made in London but the velvet was made almost certainly in Lucca in Italy. The dye used to create the red colour came from the kermes beetle found only in Egypt. Remarkably, the Cap is the only piece of clothing to survive that belonged to either King Henry VIII or any of his predecessors.

Waterford was granted the Cap of Maintenance as a symbol of its continued and steadfast loyalty to the crown. In 1534, Silken Thomas, Earl of Kildare, rebelled against the king. In refusing to support the rebellion Henry was able to send royal troops to the loyal port of Waterford and subsequently quashed

Viking Marathon25th June

Waterford Viking Marathon scheduled for 25 June is the biggest and best running event in the South East of Ireland...

Is 2016 your year to take part in the Waterford Viking Marathon? Then get those runners polished up and that running kit in order. The 2016 event will include a full marathon, half marathon and quarter marathon options - a challenge for all levels!

WVM’s Event Manager Roisin Ferris says “WVM will be actively encouraging workplaces in Waterford, making up teams of three and we have wonderful club and company prizes to reward those that make the effort”. So whether you’re a Garda, Nurse, Postman or office worker with a love of running, you are encouraged to get recruiting. If six legs are better than two, then what nicer way to take in the ancient streets of Waterford, scenic Tramore and a finishing lap at the RSC than with your dedicated relay team on June 25th.

Now in its 5th year, the Viking marathon has just been shortlisted as a finalist for Running Ireland’s ‘Marathon of The Year.’ This will no doubt attract even more than the 2,200 runners who took part last year For more information contact Waterford Viking Marathon | +353 (0)51 846 131 [email protected] | www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com

The Ravens Rock car rally returns to Waterford on the 26th June. This is one of the premier motoring events in the Irish Motorsport calendar. Dooley’s Hotel on The Quay, plays host to rally HQ. Upwards of 120 Rally Crews, their support teams and families will gather on Saturday 25 to complete the formal paperwork, with the event starting bright and early from the hotel on the morning of Sunday 26th.

The Ravens Rock Rally originated in the woodlands along the Suir Valley in 1970. Originally a forestry event, before evolving into the current tarmac event which has maintained its annual event on the last weekend in June each year.

The rally is a round of the Suirway Group, South East Stages Rally Championship as well as the Southern Four Rally Championship. The stages are among the best available in the country and rival many of the well-known stages of Kerry, Galway and Donegal.

Fiona Kelly Solo ExhibitionFrom Aug 11th

Born in Westmeath in 1985, Fiona Kelly holds an M.A in Art & Process from Crawford College of Art, Cork (2015); a B.A in Fine Art, Sculpture, received from Cluain Mhuire, Galway (2005) and a B.A (Honours) in Fine Art, Printmaking, from the Crawford College of Art, Cork (2008).

Kelly’s research into wasteland and abandoned spaces alludes to isolation and the interim. Her observations of the man-made landscape, topographic movement, stagnation and metamorphosing debris become representations; characters in contemporary fables who narrate a legacy of the interim, disposability and the Anthropocene.Soma Contemporary Gallery | +353 (0)87 196 1923 [email protected]

Mná 1916 – Women 1916Mon 20th Aug – Sat 10th Sept | Time: Check venue

This centenary year, Ireland 2016 presents Mná 1916 – Women 1916, a very special exhibition telling the stories of 300 of Ireland’s mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives involved in the 1916 Rising.

Visitors to the exhibition can explore this remarkable collection of previously unseen items, from personal objects, images and documentation, to newly digitised birth, death, marriage and census records from private and public collections.

Mná 1916 – Women 1916 is lovingly curated by Sinead McCoole as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, an author and historian whose collaborations and expertise in many areas of Irish civil history, including the Rising, have been received with acclaim both at home and abroad. Enhanced by material from the Military Archives, the National Library of Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland, it’s a loving and fitting tribute to the resilience and ability of those previously considered the ‘fairer’ sex.Foyer | Central Library | www.waterfordcouncil.ie | [email protected] +353 (0)51 849975

My Real Life, Eoin Colfer’s offering, is a quirky and somehow dark piece in which Don Wycherley plays an MS sufferer, determined to die by his own hand, while dictating his own scabrous eulogy. It’s equal parts earthy authenticity and absurd fantasy. While waiting for his overdose to take effect he records an increasingly rambling

message for his best friend, which, surprisingly perhaps, is not all doom and gloom. Theatre Royal presents Sing Street star Don Wycherley in this touching and entertaining play.Theatre Royal | www.theatreroyal.ie | +353 (0)51 874 402 [email protected] | Price: €17/€15 conc.

My Real LifeThurs 30th June – Fri 1st July | Time: 8:00pm

On May 2015 the people of Ireland made history by voting “Yes” in the marriage referendum and Ireland became the first country in the world to introduce marriage equality by public vote.

Today, we are more truly a nation of equals. The people of Ireland have exercised their Constitutional right and by direct vote they have said an emphatic ‘Yes’ to Equality

This Road to Equality Exhibition will showcase portraits and stories from LGBT history and pay tribute to the many people who helped bring about change on the road to equality. *WATERFORD VIKING TRIANGLE EVENT GUIDE

Must See*We’ve compiled a selection of must see attractions in Waterford Viking Triangle. They range from contemporary art galleries to some of the finest architecure in Ireland and the world famous Waterford Crystal. They’re all here to enjoy and within easy walking distance of each other.

Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery *

This former Methodist church dates from the mid-nineteenth century and is situated in the heart of the Viking Triangle. Greyfriar’s Municipal Gallery primarily hosts exhibitions of selected artworks from the Waterford Municipal Art Collection which contains over three hundred artworks by some of Ireland’s leading 20th century painters e.g. Jack B. Yeats, Paul Henry, Evie Hone, and Louis Le Brocquy to name but a few. There are year round visiting exhibitions and access is free of charge

French Church *

Founded in 1241, French Church often referred to as The Franciscan Friary is one of the earliest Franciscan foundations in Ireland. The elegant ruin of the stone French Church is announced by a statue of Luke Wadding, the Waterford-born Franciscan friar who persuaded the Pope to negotiate with Charles I on behalf of Irish Catholics. Hugh Purcell gave the church to the Franciscans in 1240, asking them in return to pray for him once a day. The church became a hospital after the dissolution of the monasteries, and was then occupied by French Huguenot refugees between 1693 and 1815. John Roberts is buried here, you can see the nave, chancel and an aisle which remain of the original complex, with a fine example of a triple light east window.. Ask the staff at Reginald’s Tower to let you in.

Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity *

Designed by John Roberts and built in 1793, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, is Ireland’s oldest Catholic Cathedral. Over the years, the Cathedral has seen many changes; 30 administrators, 21 Bishops of the Diocese and many structural changes. A gift of 10 crystal chandeliers from Waterford Crystal enhanced the decor of the Cathedral.

In 2000, the square near Barronstrand Street, formerly known as Red Square was re-named as John Roberts Square in light of the influence he had over the architecture of the two Cathedrals in Waterford.

Medieval Museum *

This architect designed award winning building, brings to life the story of life in the city during the Medieval era and incorporates the stunning 13 and 15th century undercrofts. Among the world class artefacts on display are the 4m-long Great Charter Roll dating from 1372, King Henrys Hat & the 15th century cloth-of-gold vestments – Ireland’s finest late medieval treasures.

Bishop’s Palace *

Built in 1743 by the renowned Anglo-Indian architect Richard Castle. It is located among a collection of remarkable 18th century buildings in the heart of the Viking Triangle and is immediately opposite the House of Waterford Crystal.

With enchanting stories and remarkable insights of the Georgian period , the re-enactor guides take you through the grand reception rooms, furnished with the best of Irish 18th century furniture, paintings, silverware and glassware including the oldest piece of historic Waterford glass dating from the 1780’s.

House of Waterford Crystal *

This brand new crystal manufacturing facility and retail outlet in the very heart of Waterford Viking Triangle, melts down 750 tonnes of crystal and produces 45,000 pieces each year using traditional manufacturing techniques. The facility offers guided tours of the manufacturing process to all visitors, both international and domestic. The showroom showcases the largest selection of Waterford Crystal on display in the world.

City Hall *

Designed by John Roberts, The Large Room in City Hall, known in the eighteenth century as the Grand Banqueting Room, has welcomed such notable figures as Daniel O’Connell, Thomas Francis Meagher, Isaac Butt, Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond.

The central chandelier in the chamber, dating from the mid 1780s, is the largest and oldest piece of Waterford glass extant, and was originally commissioned for the Presence Chamber in Dublin Castle, where it hung until 1836.

Reginald’s Tower *

This remarkable landmark 12th century building, said to be the oldest civic urban structure in Ireland is named in honour of a Viking. Situated at the apex of the Viking Triangle it houses the treasures of Viking Waterford. On display is the full set of weapons from a Viking warrior’s grave, the only set to survive in Ireland. Also included is the famous 12th century gold and silver Waterford Kite Brooch the finest piece of 12th century secular metal work ever found in Ireland. An imaginative AV presentation on the top floor tells the eleven hundred year old story of the tower from 914 to 2014.

Blackfriars *

A mid-thirteenth-century Friary built by the Dominican order, inherited its name from the black habits worn by its Friars. The Dominicans first settled in Waterford in 1226 and the site was requested as a gift by the citizens of Waterford. Blackfriars was dissolved in 1540 by order of King Henry VIII. The friary was subsequently used as a courthouse from 1617 and as a theatre in 1746.The Dominicans were an important asset to the city. They were an intellectual order who organised schools and educated the sons of the merchant class. The remains of the tower and gateway are still visible and the space is occasionally used during Waterford city’s various festivals.

Index Gallery at Central Library *

Located in the foyer of Waterford City Council’s Central Library on Lady Lane, The Index Gallery aims to support the arts and artists in the City by offering a contemporary exhibition space. It hosts regular art exhibitions which reflect the diverse cultural interests of the City, bringing art into the heart of the community. The gallery is equally accessible to amateurs, professionals, community groups and organisations.

Christchurch Cathedral *

Arguably, the finest 18th Century ecclesiastical building in Ireland, designed by John Roberts, the architect of Georgian Waterford, is a strong example of the elegance of the period, taking on board principles of Neo-Classicism and symmetry, alongside fresh and decorative rococo styling. John Roberts also designed Waterford’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

There has been a Cathedral on this site since 1096. It was on this monumental site of Christ Church in 1170 that Strongbow was married to Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster. This is, therefore one of the most important historic sites in Ireland and a must see on your visit to Waterford Viking Triangle.

SOMA Contemporary Gallery *

Based in a former sweet factory in Lombard Street, SOMA is Waterford’s foremost contemporary exhibition space. This artist-led contemporary gallery has become known for its high profile art exhibitions as well as for being an unusual and versatile space. Following a three month renovation programme the gallery re-opened with a series of exhibitions exploring societal conventions.

Theatre Royal *

Built in 1783, and re modelled in 1876 this is one of the finest horseshoe shaped Victorian Theatres in Ireland, housing 430 seats on 3 levels. In the 220 years since the establishment of the Georgian playhouse which was subsequently adapted in the late nineteenth century to the Theatre Royal we know today, Waterford has been renowned for its local musical and dramatic traditions. The Theatre Royal, often referred to as “the people’s theatre”, has been the traditional venue for this creative activity down through the generations. It hosts a wide variety of performances throughout the year including music, theatre, dance and comedy.
