Just as Sarah Binks' poetry maybe divided into the pre-Regina periodand the post-Regina period, so ourcollege life is divided into two in-stallments — Ninety Dollars andNinety Dollars. "Sarah Finks" hasbeen travelling the common roomlately for a slower and more detailedstudy of her poems presented on"Stage 49". As for the financial situ-ation, most of the post office letter-gang slaved over the Chr'stmas rushto pay off their creditors. "Clicker",however, leaned over the parcels fora few extra hours and was able tohave a tire fixed which he claimsWeiler deliberately flattened.

But conservative Ccl had his owncar troubles and front and back seatdrivers to contend with on the way toSt. Thomas. Ignoring the rattlingdoor, the temperamental windowwhich rolls down but never up, crowd-ed conditions, and Lorraine, Weilerkept to the middle of the road, duti-fully waved to Chess and his pantingcar at every gas station, and madeAlma College in a surprisingly shorttime for 50 miles per.—Just kidding,friend,—don't worry, your fatherwill never read this.

Choice gossip in these halls forawhile has been concerned with en-gagements. Ex-Waterloon Audrey-Ruth Gross is flashing a diamondfrom Mickey McClaren. Ross Hudsonlooked very as he explained,"I got myself engaged!" Mary Shirkand he have not, as yet, decided up-on any future plans. The latest NewHamburg Report concerns the ex-change of mouth organs during theChristmas shuffle between Joan Pauliand Ed. Nabert. They can now makebeautiful music together.

Another Wate loon, John Boothby,is providing modern dance music withhis newly organized seven-piece or-

chestra under the name of JohnnyAdams. The enterprising ensemblehas been engaged by the SunnysideGardens and in the future hopes tobeat out a few boogies at the TeenCanteen. John is among the threeivory ticklers who provide those shortnoon hour concerts. Mrs. Felton andMargaret Ann Hoffman do their ex-pressing in the classical field.

Now a word from Western report-ed in Jack Wett'aufer's own words.

"I was standing outside a Businessclassroom Friday afternoon, discus-sing Barbara Ann with the boys. Iwas kibitzing (as I sometimes do)and said if she would come along, I'ddance with her.

Well, wouldn't you know, two min-utes later along came Barbara Annherself with this Geof. Caldwell guy.The boys taunted me a bit, so tokeep my reputation, I went intoaction. I put down my books, tiptoedforward and said, 'Would you careto dance, Miss Scott?" I really didn'tdance with her—just about two waltzturns.

Barbara Ann didn't seem to mind,but I can't figure out why this Cald-well guy gets so mad. He starts hop-ping up and down andwwasn+s tocharge me with assault, before thestudent court. I'm all for the idea,but unfortunately he backs down.Anyway I smoothed it over. I saidthat Barbara Ann was so lovely thatno normal red-blooded young mancould resist her. And I'm abnormallynormal, as anyone would vouch forme—although I have doubts aboutthe red blood and the youth."

The case of the missing Binnham-mer, or, "to buy or not to buy; thatis the question," was cleared up bythat effective detective, Nick, whosummed up the situation in a short

meaningful sentence, "he's back." Tothe question, "where've ya bin' ham-mer?" capitalist Gerhardt issued hisanswer to the public and Miss Ax-ford today. It seems the taxi businessoffers lucrative returns and our op-portunity boy decided to partakelegally of the profits. To own a taxiwas his goal but some loaded dough-head jumped his bid and binny walk-ed home. The only sympathy he re-ceived from the office was, "settledown, boy!"

For a lesson in Geometry the tri-angle is most interesting. As an ex-ample, let us take Kathryn Applebyas the centroid of the medians to thethree angles, Frank Petch, StanLuciw, and Eric Lavelle. Up to thisdeadline, Eric Lavelle has occupiedthe right angle.

The Spanish movement instigatedby Calvin Blair and Bob Diggin hasproved unsuccessful and impractic-able. It consists of a shuffle of chairsand occupants from one row to an-other in order to escape translationor else be in a position to translatethe small paragraph one has prepared."Foiled again" has become the popu-lar slogan of this class.

Albert Augustine is taking a backseat these days as Knock Rummy re-places Bridge. The three card sharks,MacTavish, Weiler and 'temper' Der-stine may be heard quite frequentlyas they enjoy a friendly little game.The loser must forfeit his pockets as

ash trays. The game is also a popularpastime with the Dorm boys. Luch,in disagreement, breaks up the gameby refering to the players as "hoaf-erpickers". This is one word fromLuch's vocabulary which absolutelyno one has been able to translate.

Jane McGanity returned in a gaymood from a carefree trip to Mont-real. She reported in a lenthy commonroom chit-chat that the weather wasslushy, the clothes were lovely, andthe vices were numerous. Other job-conscious students returned in blackmoods from the Civil Service exams.All hope of polishing desks in theHouse of Commons had been aban-doned.

In the complaint corner we findBarbara Pierce with a hangover ofcredits; Mary Uffleman who wantsto know what she'll do when she getsher B.A. anyway—(this is no love-lorn column, Mary, but if Doug Scotthasn't made up his mind by now,you'd better have your telephone con-nected and start passing out the num-ber) ; and then Griper Gram who hasbrought the S.L.E. back to the orig-inal constitution which means thatthe overflow of members will beousted.

WHY CAN'T YOUPAINT?

We all make an attempt to expressourselves through the written wordregardless of how imperfect our lan-guage might be. But we have not thesame confidence when asked to ex-press ourselves in the pictorial lan-guage of line and colour. Is this notstrange when we consider that veryyoung children and primitive peoplecan express themselves quite freelyin a pictorial way? Perhaps it is be-cause they have no inhibitions aboutart and artists to paralyze their hands.As the child grows and developeshe comes into contact with per-fection in techniques, and later on inlife we begin to hear this sort ofthing, "If only I had had the neces-sary training I could fill an art gallerywith all the wonderful things I'veseen and thought and done." Well,there is nothing to prevent this personfrom putting all this on paper or can-vas. He can hold a pen and pencil towrite, and a paint-brush is not un-known to his hand when the kitchenchair needs a fresh coat. But some-thing seems to trouble him. He isthinking of painting as a trained pro-fession. To many people who live butdo not paint, painting seems a highlytechnical art or science like engineer-ing or the law.

It would be foolish to say that someartists do not paint better than others,or that professionals do not improvetheir technique by practice. In thefirst instance, some have a naturalaptitude for painting, like Peter PaulRubens, to use a well known example.In the second instance, everyonelearns more about painting by thesimple process of painting more andmore and by thinking about painting—jotting down impressions in a few

strokes that illustrate aspects ofeveryday life, searching for the ex-act means that will capture some ofthe vitality of living. Observe howgreat artists developed from med-iocre painters when they discoveredsubject matter that was the essenceof some aspect of life. The crafts-manship of painting can be learnedby constantly painting.

To regard painting as a profession-al skill is to put the 'cart before thehorse. The only important thing anartist needs is 'something to say.Thousands of people who do not painthave living compositions in theirmind's eye and are therfore betterequipped to paint than many painters.For painting is primarily an aspect ofliving. What the mature observer ofa painting wants is not accomplishedcraftsmanship nor even correct per-spective, but a frank statement ofwhat the artist has done, seen orthought.

None of these things can be learn-e 1 in the library or at art-school.They have to be learned out in theworld where men get fragments of thetruth hammered into their heads."The Creation of Adam" by Michel-angelo seems to have been created

out of the tension and vitality of theunverse. It is the pictorial expressionof a man who was favoured andprivileged in his youth and then letdown the market-pUce in the yearsthat followed. Michelangelo's skill asa craftsman was incidental to theelemental fury that possesed his mindand soul.

Style in any art is determined bythe artist himself. A man writes andpaints according to what he is. Thereis a kind of fatalism about it. Goodpainting expresses a man's exper-iences, character, and personality.Since the art galleries are packedwith good paintings in variegatedstyles, it would be folly to upholdone school of painting as the best.But let this page stand in praise offrank statements by men who havehad experiences outside the studioand who paint without flourishes. Theacademic style with its flourishes andlifeless exactitude is an admission ofthe pompous attitude of the academicartists of today. Working slowly andmeticulously to obtain just the righttone and proportion for a 'still life'or a pearl necklace in a portrait, andsteeped in one theory and method,they paint in a style that becomesthem. Living the life of studio paint-ers, they have little real knowledgeof the practical world. The true art-ist of our day is a plain man, who is

in contact with the masses of plain,ordinary people. He paints simplestatements in bold brush-strokes with-out flourish and polish. His exper-iences in the everyday v/orld amongplain, ordinary people breed in him acontempt for pretentiousness. For heknows that pretentiousness in art dis-closes pretentiousness in an artist'smind; and that the fault is not falsestyle but false humanity.

There is much that can be learnedabout painting, But it is not one ofthe learned professions. No one canteach a painter the primary essentialsof subject matter and attitude. Firstof all, a painter needs something topaint—not the art, but the life; notthe brush-strokes, but the experience.

Let us pause in our gay whirl ofexams, essays, and seminars, longenough to sing the praises of an out-standing Canadian woman, a womanwho should serve as an example to allof us—Sarah Binks, W.P.M., L.L.D.,better known as the Sweet Songstressof Saskatchewan. Time and space donot permit me to delve into her lifehistory; however, if you listened toStage 49 last Sunday, or have eatenlunch in the Girl'sCommon Room re-cently, you will know of her passionfor Geology and her P.R. and P.R.periods. You will also know of hertragic death, the result of mercurypoisoning, caused by her attempt totake her temperature with her prizehorse thermometer and chew ScotchMints at the same time.

No, I cannot recount her life his-tory and her poetic triumphs; I canonly attempt to describe Sarah theWoman, whose personality is capturedin the works of Sarah the Poetess.Those womanly qualities admired,possessed and immortalised by Sarah,should be the goal of every woman.Poetess, Sarah may have been, butshe was first, last, and foremost awoman, and a romantic woman atthat. In her haunting, Hunter's Moonshe presents an Ojibway maiden'splaintive call to her lover:

Red Brother, Red Brother,Wandering wild and free—Tonight it's Hunter's Moon,

Brother—How about hunting me?That Sarah possessed tenderness,

an excellent trait in a woman, is evi-dent to anyone who has read herpoem The Cursed Duck. This lamentwas written shortly after Sarah's petduck had bitten Oles ear off (Olewas the Binks' hired man).

A cursed duck pecked off his ear,And his face grew peaked and pale;"Oh, how can a woman love me

now?"Was his constant and lonely wail.But a woman came, and she loved

the man,With a love serene and clear—She loved him as only a woman can

loveA man with only one ear.

In addition to tenderness Sarah har-bored a deep maternal instinct, dem-onstrated by Lullaby and Little Pa-poose. In the latter Sarah also dis-played her knowledge of child psy-chology and dietetics.Little Papoose, the twilight creepingDraws its shadows across the skies—Another hour and you'll be sleeping—Here's a pickle, close your eyes.

Who but Sarah would think of giv-ing a baby a pickle to help lull it (thebaby, that is) to sleep.

But Sarah, in common with manywomen, suffered heartbreak at thehands of an unscrupulous man, andfor a time bitterness replaced tender-ness. Sarah showed that "Hell has nofury like a woman scorned" in herpoem:

Man who has spurned and made myheart to hurt,

Is but a creature and a thing of dirt,A thing of mud, of clay, volcanic ashOld brick, cinders, broken cement,

chert.Broken-hearted or not, Sarah was

all woman and a woman that weshould strive to emulate.

LITERARY

K-W LITTLE THEATREAnother season for the K-W Little

Theatre is drawing to its close, andthe curtain has come down on threeof the most ambitious plays thisgroup, together with the Guelph LittleTheatre, has produced to date. Allthree managed to escape from thetypical comedy usually seen in thiscity, and as a result, the audience wasleft thoughtful rather than hilarious.

The season got underway in theFall with the production of Craig'sWife, starring Mrs. Edward Cleghorn.Since the cast also included formerWaterloo students, Marjorie Brydenand Bob Dier, we at the college na-turally felt something of a personalinterest in the play. Quite aside fromthe personal aspect, we found theplay really very stimulating. Mrs.Cleghorn's interpretation of a womanwho had lost all love for everythingexcept her house was all too con-vincing. She created a hard, pitilesscharacter, completely unsympatheticto others' troubles, unreasonably jeal-ous and suspicious of her husbandand friends, yet somehow pathetic inher weakness.

The husband gave an excellent per-formance as a man fighting to breakdown the barriers which his wife hadbuilt between them and the world ofnormal, friendly people, and vainlytrying to understand the woman thathe had married. His sensible, sym-pathetic personality provided an ad-mirable contrast to that of his gran-ite-like wife, and he completely wonthe audience to his side.

would have been more convincing asa professor had he been a bit older.The romantic interest that he andMarjorie Bryden provided seemedrather unnecessary to the plot, al-though it did help to bring out theutter heartlessness of Mrs. Craig'scharacter.

The setting and costumes weresuitable and did not force themselvesupon the audience in such a way asto distract attention from the players.Though there were some flaws (notan unusual occurrence in any ama-teur production) the play as a wholewas of quite a high standard. Thefinal scene was perhaps too theat-rical, but nonetheless it proved veryeffective; here we saw Craig's wifeleft alone in the hollow shell that hadonce been her most cherished posses-sion.

In marked contrast to this psy-chological study of a woman's char-acter was the next play produced,namely Fortune My Foe by the Cana-dian playwright, Robertson Davies. Inthis play we have a problem of na-tional importance that confrontsevery Canadian today. Mr. Daviesdeals with the lack of appreciationfor the arts, the absence of oppor-tunity for ambitious youth, and theconsequent emigration of our mosttalented citizens to the United States.The first play centred about a singlecharacter; he second gave a search-ing interpretation of many characters,all representative of various aspects

of the Canadian scene. Thus we seethe frustration of the young pro-fessor, the disillusionment of the old,the ambition of the heroine, and thephilosophical musings of the bar-tender. Here too, are portrayed thefanatical communist, the loveabledrunk, and the stupid superficialityof certain educational authorities.Against this background stands outthe personality of Franz, the D.P.marionette maker, who sees in Can-ada, not only faults, but the promiseof a better future. "Everyone with anaxe to grind wants Franz to grindit for him", might summarize muchof the plot, yet Franz remains steadyand hopeful, a much needed anchor inthe turmoil of conflicting ideals abouthim.

This was a difficult play to produce,and the director, Mr. Tuck, should becongratulated on the results. Thesetting was effective, and its faults,though numerous, were minor ones.The desired atmosphere was createdand the audience could feel itselfpart of the play. The direction wasgenerally good, although an improve-ment might have resulted from amore careful casting of some of themain characters. Walter Grimwoodplayed the part of Chilly Jim sincere-ly, but was handicapped by his youthwhich seemed inconsistent with hisrat he r profound philosophicalthoughts (mixed with slang). Deanprofessor, but his speeches, whichAnderson looked the part of the olderwere probably the most important inthe play, were at times barely audibleand usually seemed to lack conviction.The younger professor, George Nor-man, was very poorly cast and did

nothing to help the play. Good per-formances were put on by the rest ofthe cast, with special mention goingto Peggy Nairn's clear diction andexcellent stage manner, Mildred Sny-der's dyamic performance as the"Commie", and the amusing stuffi-ness of Edna Honsberger and P. J.Vincent as the educators. Actinglaurels, however, go especially toThomas Barry's sympathetic interpre-tation of Franz, the New Canadian,with his restrained use of accent, andto Ralph Ashton's superb portrayalof "Buckety", the derelict drunk whoprovided the play with its best hum-our. Mr. Ashton's performance wasanything but amateurish, and, with-out apparent effort, he completelystole the show. Mention must also bemade of the puppet show, producedby Carol Hicks with the assistanceof Betty Shantz. Had this been poor-ly presented, it could have ruined theentire play; instead, it enhanced itin the opinion of most of the aud-ience.

In spite of some technical flaws,and some very poor casting in fewcases the play was a satisfying ex-perience. Mr. Davies would havehelped the situation had he allowedfor more action and less wordiness,but the actors proved capable of giv-ing a commendable performance, evenunder these difficulties. It was an am-bitious undertaking, and the Kitchen-er Little Theatre may be justly proudof its success.

The third play in the series was theGuelph Little Theatre production ofT. S. Eliot's Murder In The Cathed-ral. This presentation, unfortunately,was not too happy an experiment, as

it proved to be beyond both the aud-ience and the actors. This drama inblank verse, centering around themartyrdom of Thomas Becket in 1170requires experienced players to put afeeling of reality into its longspeeches, especially important in theabsence of almost all accompanyingaction. Difficult as this feat is for theprofessional actor, it is virtually im-possible for the amateur. I felt thatthe actors were unconvincing, the ac-tion and gestures stilted and artificial,and the dramatic effect completelylost. The , audience remained un-touched, The most convincing per-formance was given by the foursoldiers who, unfortunately, spoiledthe effect by lapsing into prose andsounding like nothing so much as agroup of high school debators. Thetempters, rather than being terrify-ing, were amusing when they weren'tdull. The peak was reached by onewho, dressed in a theatrical cape,mustache, and beard, (and lookingas though he should sprout horns anda tail at any moment) pranced aboutpoor Thomas accentuating all his re-marks with wild flourishes. One feltthat Thomas was lucky to die so earlyand be spared any more of this sortof thing.

I realize that this is a very harshcriicism and I would hasten to addthat there were several partially re-deeming features. The most outstand-ing performance to my mind was giv-en by Romeo LaCasse in his excellentstage settings and by the committeein charge of costumes. The dim lightfiltering through stained glass win-dows upon stone pillars and carvedaltar, together with the muted organmelodies created an atmosphere thatseemed most authentic. The ccsfum-ing was superb, with careful attentionto accuracy and to colour. The pre-sentation would have been perfectas a tableau.

Not all the blame for the disap-pointment in this play must be placedupon the actors. As mentioned before,

the emphasis was upon dialogue rath-er than action, and often the speechesdidn't seem to merit the prominencethey were given. There was a dis-turbing mingling of poetry with mod-ern slang. Can we justify in the sameplay the use of lines like "Destinywaits in the hand of God, shaping thestill unshapen" and then the phrase"to beat the barons at their owngame"? A feeling of twelfth centuryreligious fervour cannot be main-tained if such rude interruptions keepjerking us back to the present.

But this is enough of blame. Prob-ably a more successful result wouldhave followed the presentation of aplay more wTithin the capabilities ofamateur actors, and the appreciationof the audience. The Gudoh LittloTheatre must, however, be com-mended for its courage in makingthis experiment. If we never airedhigher than our present perform-ances, no advances would come intothe theatre. Certainly the actorsshowed interest and ambition in theireffort, and their sincerity in portrayalcannot be doubted. They have prob-ably learned a great deal through pro-ducing a play of this kind, and we ofthe audience must also have bene-fitted from this new experience in anunfamiliar type of drama.

To anyone who has followed theprogress of the Little Theatre in thisdistrict, it is obvious that it is im-proving in both performance andchoice of plays. To the student, it of-fers an opportunity to study dramatictechnique in practice, while to thecasual theatre-goer, it gives a tasteof the theatrical entertainment sosadly lacking in our community. Itseems likely that, if a Canadiantheatre ever evolves, it will have asits nucleus the Little Theatre organi-zation. To the representatives of thisgroup, therefore, for helping to keepalive dramatic interest in Canada, weowe our thanks.

At this time of year, the school looks forward to seeing the dramatictalents of the Frosh class in the annual Frosh play. As yet nothing seems tohave been done in connection with this event, though it is rumoured that ameeting has been held. Last year's Freshmen can look back with pride ontheir "FROSH FOLLIES OF 48." It was a smashing success and rated thebest ever produced at Waterloo. It would be almost impossible to equal thatstellar preformance, but every success to you from the Sophs of 49. (p.s.don't you get banned too!)

Perhaps university professors are supposed to be disinterested in theirstudents, but such is not the case with Miss Ilsa Aksim our language teacher.Miss Aksim has organized French and German clubs which meet at her homewhere they practise speaking these languages and at the same time have anentertaining evening. This is no doubt a great deal of trouble and incon-venience to her and her family and we of the various clubs wish to expressour appreciation for her efforts. Thank you Miss Aksim.

Small though it may be, Water-loo is positively cosmopolitan. Go halfway round the globe, and you willstill find places which Waterloo Col-lege students have known, and talk-ing to them, you can travel in imag-ination as far east as Lithuania, asfar west as British Columbia.

KRISTINA SIDLAUSKAITEKristina comes to us from Lithu-

ania, and from the university atBonn, Germany. As a student of bothcountries, she is able to draw somevery interesting comparisons betweenthem, their educational systems, andtechniques. She completed two years

at Bonn, and will receive her B.A. atWaterloo this year. She hopes to en-ter the field of Social science.

The student of a German univers-ity is left much more to his own de-vices. He selects his own courses, butonce he has entered a particular field,his range of subjects is much morerestricted than ours. Each group ofsubjects is known as a "faculty". PassArts would be the "Faculty of Philos-ophy," and those entering it wouldstudy such things as history, lan-guages, philosophy, and so on, butthere would be no sciences, biologies,or maths, these coming under Scienceand Mathematic faculties, and a stud-ent cannot mix these subjects. Here'sglad news, there are hardly any writ-ten examinations until the end of thethree or four years of the course,

when you are tested on the subject,literally from beginning to end! Oralexams, however, are quite fiequent.

"How did you happen to come toWaterloo?" I asked Kristina. Thatwas one of my stock questions.Kristina knew no English when shecame to Canada as a D.P., to work ina mental hospital some two years ago,and though she has become quite pro-ficient in the language, she felt thata small college would give her morechance for adjustment. Eesides, Kit-chener, with its people of many lands,has a little more of the Europeanflavour than other cities in Canada.One thing that she misses though, isthe drama which is so popular inEurope, and receives little recogni-tion here. Even the children go tothe theatre, a special one for childrenonly, where stories for youngsters arepresented.

For the displaced person in Europethere is no future, and Kristina is gladto be here, though her parents andyoung brother are still in Germany.In the camps there is nothing to do,unless the group bands together topresent a play. Life is continually in-terrupted by war. Foreign students inGerman universities must guaranteethat they will not take a job in Ger-many, for the nation is already over-crowded. Young people have beenweakened physically by malnutrition,and, to use a bare-fact word, starva-tion. European universities are find-ing that even the memory of students

has been affected by the lack of fatsin the diet. People like Kristina, new-ly come from these conditions, merithigh praise for their adjustment, theircourage in facing a new life. We areglad to welcome at least one of theirnumber to Waterloo.

PHIL HARRISPhil comes to us from the land of

the bulldog, Winston Churchill, andthe red, white and blue. He found hisfirst Canadian job in Fergus, wherehe found a church with the samename as one back home in England,and it's to that we can credit his com-ing to Waterloo. Rev. Young of St.Andrew's Church first told him ofWaterloo College. Next his job, whichis hairdressing, took him to Guelphand Milverton. ("By the way," hesaid, "I've drawn up a beautiful planfor a beauty salon, to be installed inthe front hall. We might call it "LaFemme" or "Waterloo Bags" orsomething like that!")

Last fall Phil entered Waterloo inthe pre-theology course. Though helikes Canada, he feels he would liketo travel, perhaps entering the mis-sion field after he graduates.

defence. However, he claims therewas nothing exciting. What seemedlike romance from this side of theAtlantic was daily routine over there.The first thing that struck PhT aboutCanada was the amount of food, andnone of it rationed! He likes the peo-ple too, they are friendlier over here.

KEN HEUERMANNOur good neighbours to the south

are represented too. Ken's home is inLong Island, New York, just twentymiles from the great city. He wasintroduced to Waterloo through his

minister, and decided to come main-ly because he wanted to see our greatcountry.

Ken is preparing for a business ad-ministration course, which he willprobably complete at home. He hopesto go into the accounting field. Inhigh school he was active in the YearBook, the school paper, and in choirwork.

One of the things he noticed mostabout our great metropolis was thenumber of industries! Coming fromthe land of mass production thatreally seems remarkable.

Small? Well, yes. Perhaps Water-loo doesn't rank tops in size, but wecan lay a claim to being cosmopolitan!

What's this, another customer? If youwill stay, we won't try to high-pres-sure you, but there have been bigthings in Waterloo Sports lately. Toomany to hope to keep up with. Der-stine who has been hanging aroundour shop (picking up pointers) final-ly, with George Malcolm, won the"Little Olympic Badminton Doubles".

The hockey team for some un-known reason is not showing, butthen neither are the supporters. Thescores may be lop-sided but the play,determination and persistent drive issomething worth seeing. If you don'tbelieve me, see the next game. It alsolooks as if the co-ordinator of thegames is-reaching for the moon.

"Peppy" Stan Luciw tried to getthis term off to a good start by a"Gigantic Pep Rally." The idea waswonderful Stan, but I guess Waterloojust hasn't got anything to be peppyabout.

What this school needs among oth-er things, is a LEAGUE. If we can'tstep into the intermediate bracket,perhaps such schools as Trinity, Hur-on and a second team from O.A.C.

would be willing to form a league inall sports for next year.

I think that I am expressing theopinion of most students when I saythat unless a league is obtained,there can never be school spirit, andwithout school spirit the expansionplan is unless and therefore drasticaction should be taken.

The boys' basketball team has,through some unknown source, man-aged to get into a league. The boysare shy and don't want it spreadaround but they are actually verygood, and perhaps, if we coax them,instead of playing games on the sly,they might let us know when theyplay. Then we might go out to sup-port them. Just in case it slipped byunnoticed THE BOYS' BASKET-BALL TEAM IS IN A LEAGUE. Sowhat do I mean "miorht"? Of coursewe would support them. WaterlooCollege is our school, and its refuta-tion is what we the students make it.So let's make it a school to be proud

of. The next time there is a game ofany sort, Hockey or Boys' or Girls'Basketball, don't say, "Oh, I wouldrather go to a show". Say, "It is myDUTY to MY school, to go." The onlypossible excuse being that of havingan exam on the following day, butthat should not even be an excuse forthe professors should have the bet-terment of the school at heart andpostpone the exam.

Full-fledged intercollegiate basket-ball is in the offing for the sports en-thusiasts of Waterloo. Recently theAthletic Directorate announced theentry of our College into an inter-collegiate league comprising McMas-ter, 0.A.C., Western, not the Mus-tangs of course, and Waterloo. Theschedule as yet has not been an-nounced but it is understood that itis to get underway about January 28.

The College home games will beplayed on the K-W Collegiate flooras it is felt that the College floor istoo small and would not accommo-date a sufficient number of spectators.

Basketball is a growing wintersport in Canada, but as yet it has notreceived very great spectators sup-port because of two factors, the lack

of good court facilities, and the na-tural inborn interest of Canadians inhockey. Western has been one of thechief exponents of basketball, thanksto Johnny Metras and his Mustangswho have led a brilliant record in in-tercollegiate senior competition aswell as in tough exhibition playagainst teams from south of theborder.

Waterloo's entry into intercolleg-iate basketball, or intercollegiate com-petition of any kind, is a step for-ward that has been wanting for sometime. Now all we have to do is proveour right to be there, through a hard-playing team and some real studentand alumni support.

A graduate of our College has re-cently been honoured and has there-by brought fame not only to himself,but to his Alma Mater as well. Theindividual concerned is Rev. GeorgeInnes of Williamsburg who gradu-ated from our Seminary in 1925. Hehas been Honoured by the Norwegianlegation at Montreal with the 7thLiberty Cross. The award was givenfor services rendered to NorwegianNaval personnel from 1940 to 1942when Rev. Innes was pastor of ZionLutheran Church in Lunenburg, N.S.He later served as an army chaplain.

A Norwegian training camp wasestablished in Lunenburg in 1940.Rev. Innes became unofficial chaplainof the camp since no Norwegian pas-tor was available at the time. Besidesholding Church services, classes inEnglish were held and he gave muchtime to personal counselling withboth officers and men. By renderingassistance to these men he was ableto keep up their morale in the darkdays of 1940 and 1941. Representa-tives of the Canadian Legion present-ed him with the award during hischurch service at Williamsburg a fewweeks ago. This incident is of particu-lar interest to us because the son of

the recipient of the award, MarkInnes is in our midst as a freshman.

Ralph Tailby, a graduate of theclass of 1939 is engaged in the pur-suit of a career in accountancy inKitchener. He has also been electedTreasurer of the Alumni EndowmentFund. Ralph has served the graduatesof our school by acting as their re-presentative in the Senate of the Uni-versity of Western Ontario. He ismaking a determined effort this yearto gain additional members for theAlumni Endowment Fund and pros-pective grads will be hearing fromhim in the very near future.

Phyllis Ziegler returned to Kitch-ener for the Christmas holiday sea-son. She was married last summer byDean Schaus in our College chapeland may thereby have established aprecedent for other graduates. Phyllisis living in the famous city of Madi-son, Wisconsin and is teaching school.

Walter Donovan also returned totht College to pay a brief visit re-cently. He is teaching at Chatsworthbut is not too certain as to whetherhe will remain at the job indefinitely.Teaching seems to be a very popularprofession among Waterloo grads.Besides performing their duties asteachers they are frequently instru-mental in bringing new students tothe College. Charles Hagen of '46 isteaching at the High School at Clin-ton and should have no difficulty inmaintaining discipline since he isprobably bigger and better than anypupil in the school. Margaret Jacobiof '44 is at the Durham school. Shewas on the Cord staff for a numberof years and in the days when Water-loo had a record breaking enrollmentof sixty-seven students.

Eileen Scott of the class of '46 wasmarried in Kitchener in November toDonald Wiegand. They are living inKitchener at present and are bothfrom this community. There may besome students at our school at pres-ent who are unaware of the fact thatthe Kitchtner Library also has Water-loo grads on its staff. Katherine Lip-pert and Mary Shupe are both mak-ing a valuable contribution to thework of the library and have com-pleted graduate work in LibraryScience at Columbia University andat the University of Toronto. TheKitchener Library has a staff of wellqualified personnel and we are proudof the fact that our grads form apart of this public institution.

Dear Editor:In reply to your barbarous attack

in the last issue of the CORD, I wouldlike to inform you that the S.L.E. isfar from dead, but is presently em-erging from the throes of re-organi-zation, alive and kicking, sporting abrand-new, very workable consti-tution. Under the new setup we planto make the S.L.E. the central, con-trolling, student organization, har-monizing all student activities.

In your last editorial, Mr. Editor,you seemed to take great delight inattacking and besmurcking variousstudent organizations in the College.I do believe that an editorial can beusefully employed to criticize, but itshould be constructive criticism, andin your entire editorial I did not no-tice one word of suggestion for im-provement. I should dislike verymuch to see the CORD turn into acommon scandal sheet of the yellowjournalism variety.

Before criticizing others, Mr. Editor,you should make sure your own backyard is as clean as possible. Thisyear's editions of the CORD couldstand a lot of improvement. Collegemagazines are usually noted for someoutstanding feature; excellent hu-mour, exceptional literaria, up-to-date minute news coverage. About allthe CORD can be noted for this yearare blank pages filled with meaning-

less doodlings of printer's ink.I don't want to be too hard on you,

Mr. Editor, and your hard-working(?) staff, but the Cord should be amagazine that builds and fostersschool spirit, so sadly lacking thisyear, a magazine of which the stu-dents and the College as a whole maybe proud.

It gives us great pleasure to seeelements of life around Waterloo. Thefaculty probably did the most tobring the revival but we like to thinkthe last CORD also caused some con-troversy. The first purpose of the edi-torial has been accomplished.

No one has ever suggested, Mr.President, that the CORD is withoutfaults. But we think some of our'meaningless doddlings' have beenvery meaningful. The "Disc-Cussion"column has been extremely well writ-ten. The Literary section has broughtforth 'The Limerick Or .... ", "DcPulchrae Reginae" some poetry andother good articles. Just remember,we can only print what the studentswrite. The "For Women Only" col-umn has been well received both bymen and those of the opposite sex.On the faculty page we have enjoyedProf. Kelley's article. These are onlya few of the examples which mightbe chosen. And if you don't thinkthe magazine is improving, readthrough this month's 'Static".

Concerning the question of wheth-er the hard-working staff is (?) ornot, I can only say Mr. President,that you have never worked on theCORD. Ask any of the writers if theyworked hard or not and you'll receivea very definite answer. Or better still,Mr. President, don't ask them. Justkeep out of their way after this issueis published.

A piker is one who does things in a

small way, he is a gambler or specu-lator in a small way. According to theusage of this cognomen in all its fin-ery and finesse I gather it means thatthose who did not patronize ourWaterloo College Prom were "cheapskates." It is not in my jurisdictionto determine the right and wrong-usage or misuse of words, even thosequalified to enter the category of col-loquialism, but dear Editor, I feelobligated to take the defensive standfor the various silent student sageswhose position I feel has been direlyinfringed upon.

The offense has been incurred, Ifeel, upon three classes of students.Upon those unfortunate "critters"who could not entice some lady-friendto accompany them, either from theabsence of personality or the gump-tion to ask, and upon those sorrowingsouls who bungled the job of inveig-ling a husky party into asking themto go. Secondly, upon those gentle-men with no extra financial meansabove school expenses, whose lot it isalways to "work their way throughCollege." These cannot ailord being"pikers", since they have nothing to'gamble' in the first place. Then inmentioning the third class I must ad-mit that there is where my toe hurtwhen your piker statemen was wield-ed in my direction, and other con-scientious Christians with me.

Dear sirs, since we are all studentsseeking more knowledge and wisdomin every phase of life, is it not onlyfair and according to logic to sup-pose there exist two sides to the ques-tion of "Whether dancing, in itsmodern form, is a beneficially Chris-tian ethical form of social activity?"As a Christian seeking to edify Christthrough my living I consider it a"gamble" of Christian principles topatronize our College Prom, at the

expense of giving the S.L.E. studentactivities my whole-hearted support.So, at least from the principle of tol-eration, may I appeal for consider-ation of conflicting views upon ethicalmatters by continuing with objectiverather than subjective statements,since the Cord seems to include allexisting subject matter, and is an ob-jective literary organ worthy to beread and reread.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THEATHENAEUM ? ? ? You know;that's the social organization ofWaterloo ! The frosh are beginningto wonder if the seniors are (to usethe vernacular) pulling their legswhen they speak of the dances andparties that they used to have and,get this, twice a month. Imagine that;or can you? What I would like toknow is, WHOSE FAULT IS IT? Theexecutive, the faculty, or the stud-ents? First of all, the executive, Theystarted off with a few get acquaintedparties, but then it sort of petered out,Next, there's a rumour that someoneon the inner sanctum of the facultyhas put his or her foot down and putthe hamper on such activities. ButPLEASE say it isn't so. Then there'sthe students themselves, those gaylighthearted bons vivants, (but theycouldn't be behind any sinster plot tostop their own dances, or could they,hmmmm?) I know there are usuallya great many more females thanmales at these little parties but justthe other night a few more girlswould have been appreciated. Thiswas at the "dance" after the badmin-ton games. What happened girls? Socome on gang, let's all get togetherand develop that old school spiritthat's supposed to be so strong in ourschool and have a few more socialfunctions.

SENIOR EDITORIAL

When the Kitchener Public Utilities Commission decided to "take noaction" on a request for student trolley rates, Waterloo College felt, andquite justly, that they were being discriminated against. If Collegiate studentsreceive half-price tickets, is it right to deny them to College students? Mr.Preston's reply that any student under 18 years of age is permitted to travelcheaply, was intended to dispel any ideas of discrimination, but since moststudents of that age are completing high school and have not begun college,drawing the line at 18 years is essentially the same as drawing the line be-tween Collegiate and College.

Those attending Collegiate are thankful for the reduced expenses. Butanyone who has attended a university knows how much more in need are theadvanced students, because of greatly increased expenses.

When the Commission discussed the subject, fear of overloading in rushhours was expressed. However, because of the time-table system used at theCollege, at no single time is there a large number of students using thetrolleys. They come and go at all hours of the morning and afternoon.

The other two reasons for refusing our request were, we fear, excusesrather than reasons. It was feared that objection might come from regularcustomers who pay full fares. We say that the decrease in revenue wouldnot be sufficient to cause any public protest. One commissioner mentionedthat University of Toronto students pay full fares. But in Toronto, conditionsare different. There, reduced fares would cause a considerable loss in revenuebecause there are many more schools and students than in the twin-cities.Besides, what is done in Toronto is not the point. It is Kitchener who mustdecide her own course of action. G. E. K.

JUNIOR EDITORIAL

The professors at Waterloo have been trying to interest their classes inoutside reading for a very long time, but despite their efforts, the majorityof students continued to confine their reading to L'il Abner and Dorothy Dix.This year the faculty examined the whole question carefully and concludedthat they were faced with three problems. They decided that additional peri-odicals were needed; that they must be displayed to attract student attention;and that the students must read them.

Problem number one was attacked first. The professors of the variousdepartments have carefully selected popular periodicals at a college levelthat include a wide point of view. They realize that the ones chosen are mere-ly an introduction to available material and hope that as students becomeinterested they will suggest others which may be added later.

Dr. Lehmann overcame the second difficulty. Most students did not knowwhat magazines were available nor where to find them. A few had been for-tunate enough to stumble upon the magazine hide-out while searching for abook, but a great many believed that the only magazines subscribed to by thecollege were "Life" and "The Western Gazette". A large rack beneath thewindows in the Seminary library cleared up all such difficulties. Now, at aglance, the reader can select from those displayed, the periodical that hewished to read.

Problem number three remains with the individual student. Actually, itis not a problem at all, but a pleasure, and as magazines become increasinglydog-eared with handling, it seems almost unnecessary to remind students toread the latest periodicals. But to those who have not yet thrown caution tothe winds and opened one of the new magazines, we mr?;ht point out thatwhile fellow students are enjoying First Nites in New York, Art exhibits inLondon and Inaugurational ceremonies in Washington, they remain at Water-loo swapping stories about "How dull can College life get!"

Almost every subject taught at Waterloo can now be supplemented withreading material to be found in the periodicals in the college library. TheEnglish department has contributed several new literary magazines in thehope that students will realize that modern authors are turning out excellentarticles. The English 36 students and Little Theatre members will be interest-ed in "Theatre Arts", a recently purchased periodical, published in New York,which covers the latest developments in the theatre world. The script for"Finian's Rainbow", a musical satire, appears in the January issue and givesan insight into what is being done in contemporary drama.

"The New Yorker", a weekly publication, is also available at the libraryto the delight of all Thurber enthusiasts. Of course Thurber is only one ofthe many contributes, but his unique cartoons and witty essays are featuredregularly. Bear to Professor Evan's heart is "File and Forget", Thurber'sentertaining account of his difficulties with a publishing house, which appear-ed in the January Ist issue. In this same issue Ogden Nash comes to gripswith television in his poem,, "I Can See You as Clearly as if You Were in TheOther Room."

Don't r)ass by that insignificant-looking "Canadian Poetry magazine." Ifyou spend a few spares in its company, you will find that Canadian poetryholds a definite position in the literary world. Occupying its rightful place of

honour on page one in the latest issue, is a Sarah Binks gem which was over-looked in P. S. Heibert's original collection "Up from the Magma".

Two English periodicals have been ordered and should appear shortly.Watch for "The Listener", a cultural magazine produced by the 8.8.C., andalso "Johnny O'London", a popular literary periodical which expresses Eng-lish humour and scholarship exceptionally well. The book reviews presentedin nearly all the literary magazines are worth reading. It is advisable to readseveral reviews about the same book before adding it to your collection. Youcan also save yourself from the boredom of watching a "B" picture by read-ing the critical film reviews.

Three Art magazines appeared in the library at the beginning of thesecond semester, The "Art Digest" is a fortnightly news magazine of AmericanArt and Artists. It claims to be free from prejudice and does not promote and"isms". Art exhibitions are reported graphically and Professor Cleghorn be-lieves students in Fine Arts "will find plenty to read and a feast for their eyes.""Canadian Art," is a quarterly that reports on fine arts, architecture and de-sign in Canada, and gives an up-to-date account of activities and trends inArt throughout the provinces. "Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism" ishighly recommended. It is published four times a year and is interested inthe advancement of philosophical and scientific studies of the arts and relatedfields.

If we have been unable to impress you with Literary anH. Art magazines,perhaps the Business Journals will entice you to the library. Labour, produc-tion, world trade, can be studied in British, American and Canadian publica-tions. Even conditions in Russia are covered by "Soviet Russia Today". Econ-omics 20 students will find supply and demand curves much easier to learn ifthey consult "Easing the car supply" in the January issue of the "U.S. Newsand World Report".

It is a mistake to pass by the Geographical journals and the scientificmagazines just because the titles are formidable and the covers appear un-interesting. Peneath their exterior lies very readable material illustrated byexcellent kodochrome shots. "The American Journal of Botany" and "PlantPhysiology" have been added to the collection this term, and whether you studyscience or not you will find them interesting and educating. A few philosophyand psychology periodicals are available. Reports submitted by noted psychol-ogists make it possible for the reader to review the current developments inthe various field of psychology. Allport, author of the text used in the ab-normal psychology course contributes regularly to "Psychological Bulletin,"

Books as well as magazines are being added regularly to the college li-brary. Dr. Annett has presented the library with two copies of his new bookwhich will be reviewed by Harold Gram in the next issue of the Cord. Frenchand German authors books, not obtainable during the war. are now being re-leased, and Waterloo has purchased the works of such famous authors asGide, Hofmauns and Maetereiinck.

The English department hone to furnish the complete works of Shake-speare and add a collection of drama. The Kitchener Library has provideddrama books this year.

In order that the students may know what new books and magazines arebeing added to the college library, the sfaff has planned a section, "What'snew in the Library" This column should familiarize students with new materialand direct their choice toward heplful supplementary reading. H. A. T.
