A profile of James (Jim) Robinson

by Ed HearndenSince this profile of Jim Robinson was completed,we regret to share that he passed away suddenly onNovember 17, 2013. We were honoured to have himand his wife Lil, who passed away last year, among thefirst Community Members here at Waterside! Jim willbe sadly missed by many Waterside friends and weextend our condolences to the Robinson Family.

Want to know all about potatoes? Then Jim Robinsonis your man. Born in PEI in 1925, Jim grew up on hisfamily’s potato farm. There are Robinsons still growingpotatoes today on the Island. “The Robinson potatoesare very popular” he says.

Jim can trace his family history back for more than 3½ centuries. Joseph Robinson, born in 1748, workedas a blacksmith in Staffordshire, UK, before joiningthe Royal Navy. He spent 12 years working in the USAbefore deciding to emigrate to Canada. With his wifeMary, they established a home in Charlottetown whichat that time consisted of “four buildings and a shed.”

As a teenager Jim joined the RCAF Air Cadets , laterenlisting in the Air Force to train as a wireless operator-air gunner. Subsequently, he joined the Air Division of

the federal Department of Transport as an aircraftinspector, travelling to many parts of Canada. Afterretiring in 1985, he and his wife Lilian lived in CarletonPlace, moving to the newly-built Waterside 5 yearslater to become some of the first residents there alongwith Doreen Duff and Melva and Merton Glenn.

Jim has a son David living in the Carleton Place areaand a daughter Shawn in Edmonton. He also boasts5 grand-children and 9 great-grand-children. That’s

what potatoes can do for you!
