This is my third year in the Watertown FFA, in those three years I have attended the Fire Conference, S e c t i o n a l L e a d e r s h i p C o n f e r e n c e , and State FFA
Convention. I have also participated in Horse Evaluation, CDE, the Fish Fry, the Toy Show, and the Fruit Fundraiser. I live on a grain farm just north of town where we grow corn and soybeans. These past two years I have run our FFA Plot running a soy bean and corn plot, this also doubles as my SAE. I show my Grandpa’s Clydesdales at various fairs around the nation. In the future, I would like to become an agrono-mist and eventually get back into the grain farming industry.

was a part of last year’s Horse Evaluation CDE contest, and I also have previously participated in Poultry Evaluation. I am currently working on my two SAE’s in Small Animal Entrepreneurship and Horse Placement. For my Small Animal SAE I own a few rabbits which I use for production and showing purposes. I am actively involved at a saddlebred horse barn just outside of Watertown to help further my experiences for my Horse Placement SAE. I have also been a part of Speaking Contests such as the FFA Quiz Bowl. I hope to further my experiences through FFA in the following years.

For this I work on our own farm specifically with the show cattle program. Our farm is located outside of Watertown, and we exhibit our Registered Holstein cattle at the district, state, national, and international level. In the future, I plan to be part of the dairy industry and give back to the FFA organization.

This is my third year involved with Watertown FFA. During the past three years I have partici-pated in many events including poultry judging, sectional leader-ship workshops,
and many more. This year I am in prepared public speaking and on the parliamentary procedure team. For my SAE, I focus on small animals, mainly rabbits, as I want to continue my agriculture career by becom-ing a veterinarian in the future. For me, the best part about FFA are all the amazing people I get to work with, as well as all the extraordinary opportunities

FFA Degrees
GREENHAND DEGREE is for freshman or first year FFA members who have begun to develop their Supervised Agriculture Experience, have been enrolled in at least one semester of an agriculture class and have a good understanding of the oppor-tunities available in the FFA.
Past Recipients of American Degree from Watertown:
DISCOVERY DEGREEis for seventh and eighth grade FFA members who participated in local chapter activities and at least participated in one activity above the local level. Some of examples of this could be Middle School Quiz Bowl, FIRE Conference, Middle School Essay Contest or State Honors Band or Choir and Agriscience Fair.
STATE DEGREE Like a high school diploma, the State FFA Degree celebrates students in their High School FFA career. Awarded by the Wisconsin State FFA Association it is a symbol to the members of the state that the recipient is a chapter leader. They have gotten involved in the FFA above the local level and develop a successful supervised agri-culture experience and increased their volun-teerism even more than the chapter level.
AMERICAN DEGREE As the highest degree achievable in the National FFA Organization, receiving the American Degree shows an FFA members dedication to his or her chapter and state FFA Association. It demonstrates the effort FFA members apply toward their supervised agriculture experience program and the outstanding leader abilities and community involvement they experi-enced throughout their FFA career. American Degree recipients show promise for their future and have gone above and beyond to achieve excellence.
Natalie Siedschlag receiving her American Degree. Natialie Siedschlag having fun at the career fair booths at National Convention.
CHAPTER DEGREE is the next step after the Greenhand Degree. This degree is for FFA Members who begin to take an active roll in helping plan chapter activ-ities, working hard to advance their supervised agriculture experience, and increased their vol-unteerism in the organization.

Agriculture ClassesThis year, we added a new teacher to the agriculture program, Ms. Jones. She grew up on a dairy farm outside of Mount Horeb and showed dairy cattle and was involved in the FFA. Her SAE was Dairy Production Entrepreneurship and has been awarded her American FFA Degree. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a major in Agriculture Education and a minor in Agribusiness. She has been instrumental in our social media in organizing our instagram, snapchat, and facebook pages. Agriculture Education prepares students for their future careers as there are many diverse careers. The courses we have at Watertown High School are Agriscience and Natural Resources which students can obtain farm safety certification, Agriculture Power and Production, Animal Care DC, Companion Animals, Veterinary Science, Horse Care Management, Environmental Conservation which students can obtain boaters educa-tion certification, Intro to Environmental Studies CCHS, Wildlife and Natural Resources which you can obtain trapper, snowmobile, and ATV certifications and Greenhouse Management, Landscaping, and Agribusiness and Leadership Skills. Also, Animal Care and Greenhouse Management students can receive col-lege credit from Lakeshore Technical college. College credit can also be obtained with taking the class Intro to Environmental Studies CCHS at UW-River Falls.

Community ServiceThe FFA motto is “Learning to do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” The last line shows the commitment that FFA has in developing students’ citizenship and interest in benefiting the community. Community service allows members to give back to those in need and plays an important role in stu-dent’s abilities to be awarded their Chapter, State, and American FFA degrees. These are some of the activities that our chapter participates in; bell ringing for Salvation Army, Veterans day dinner, fall festival, children’s day fair, bun run, parking at Watertown Agribusiness Dairy Breakfast, will be at the food tent for Farm Technology Days July 23-25 2019, helping out at the Watertown Lion’s Tractor Pull, agriculture presentations to the elementary schools, and donated produce and money to the Gosling Nest and Watertown Food Pantry.

Agriculture Test Plot
Alex Coughlin and Jacob Linskens after tilling the crop plot with their tractors. Alex Coughlin speaking at the crop plot field day.Riley Rennhack and Luis Avila helping out at the field crop and listening to the speakers.
This year the Agriculture plot was ran by chairperson, Alex Coughlin and sub-chair, Jacob Linskens and committee members; Jeremy Linskens, Jonathan Kuehl, and Sam Strupp. The 20 acre field was planted corn and was planted later due to wet conditions and resulted into a lower yield. There was a comparative hybrid test plot planted, observing the yield differences between 26 hybrids coming from 8 different companies. Each hybrid had 8 rows at 30 inch spacings for approximately 588 feet in the plot. The data that was collected at harvest was then analyzed by the committee to determine which hybrid yielded the most bushels per acre on average. The results can be seen on the chart provided. In addition to the hybrid test, the committee also conducted a tillage test to determine which tillage method would be best for crop production. It was determined that the ground that was worked would be better as it yielded approximately 5 bushels better than the no-till ground. Also the vertical till strip yielded about 4 bushels better than the soil finisher strip, and the chisel plowed area also beat the land untouched by the chisel plow by 4 bushels. Not only did the Agriculture Plot Committee manage the plot, but they also organized a field day for the donors and other members of the FFA. It was the first annual field day hosted by the Watertown FFA and ended up with a respected amount of forty attended. At the field day, there were speakers from nearly every seed com-pany along with Kyle Stull from Stull Agronomy presenting on corn tar spot, which is a new disease that has affected midwestern corn growers. The Agriculture Plot Committee would like to thank all of its donors who helped make the test plot and field day possible. First they would like to thank all of the seed and chemical deal-ers: Brian Karkosh (The DeLong Co), Wayne Wilson (United Cooperative), William Nass (Dairyland Seed), Steve Schultz (Nutech Seed), Brad Schuett (Insight FS), Lucas Clayton (Wyffels Hybrids), Jim Kemink (Croplan Genetics), Steven Chamberlain (Dekalb Seed), and Cody Aiken (Jungs Seed Genetics). They would also like to thank both Coughlin Farms Inc. and Linskens Custom Combining for donating their time, equipment, and fuel.

Career Development EventsThere are 17 different Career Development Events (CDE’s) members can participate ranging from evaluating animals, flowers, wildlife, and many other competitions to show how diverse agriculture is. In these competitions, members apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life scenarios with using skills they have learned. This past March members participated in the regional Platteville CDE’s with some teams advancing to the State Competition in Madison in April.

Watertown FFA members Allie and Alex are part-time employees on our farm, embracing agriculture as one way to gain experience while in high school.
Allie is on the calf care team and is mentored by Carla Vega and Sandra Salas. Alex is part of the crops/feeding team and is mentored by Tim Strobel, Paul Simon and Matt Tokarski.
Allie joined FFA because of her interest in showing sheep at the Jefferson Co. Fair. She helps at FFA activities like the fish fry. She likes agri-science courses and her favorite class is wildlife and natural resources.
Allie plans to attend UW-Platteville or UW-River Falls to study agriculture. Getting to know students in FFA that share same interests has been most rewarding to Allie.
Alex lives on a farm and joined FFA because he wanted to learn more about different aspects of agriculture. He has been on the forage judging team and participated in “drive your tractor to school” day. He enjoys classes like animal care and agri-science.
Alex has set a goal to become a diesel mechanic. He likes being in FFA because he gets to know fellow students with different ag experiences than his.
Allie and Alex, we’re proud to have you on our team!
Thanks to FFA advisors and agriculture teachers Mike Gross and Jessica Jones for guiding all FFA students as they set out on their life’s journey.
The future is bright...
With youth like Allie Stair and Alex Jaeger on the Rosy-Lane Holsteins team!
