Tips to get your home ready for the cooler weather

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Home Instead Senior Care Watford. In this instalment, I will be providing you with some useful tips on how to prepare your home for the cooler months. As the seasons change, so does the way we run our homes. Now is a good time to check your home to prevent any potential problems once the cold weather arrives. Taking some time to do some maintenance now will save costly repairs later. Check for drafts: Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace seals around window and door frames or use draught extractors if money is tight. Heating Maintenance: An annual inspection is important to make sure your heating system is working properly and operating at peak performance this winter. Having your boiler inspected now, rather than waiting until cold weather arrives, will avoid the last minute rush and ensure that you won’t be left shivering on that first cold morning. Test safety devices: Replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly. Clean the gutters: Now is a good time to clear your gutters. Hire a reputable company to remove leaves and debris from gutters and check for leaks. Clean the fireplace and chimney: You can clear out ash and charred wood from the fireplace yourself, but leave the chimney cleaning to a professional. It may also be useful to have a professional check for draughts. Install Rails: If you have steps at your front or back door, consider fitting a grab rail to help maintain your balance when walking on a slippery drive or footpath up to your front door. I hope these tips can help you to prepare for the winter months and ensure you and your family enjoy the colder months safely. I’d love to hear from you! To make a suggestion for a future topic, please write to me at [email protected] or call me on 01923 250513 Emma Shepherd

Approaching Winter

Winter is fast approaching, it is the time of year when Astronomers can spend many hours

at the eyepieces of their telescopes, although modern day astronomers now rely on their

cameras to do all their viewing work. The main reason for this is that cameras are far more

sensitive than the human eye. Also camera pictures can be downloaded onto a computer

and enhanced to give a clearly visible record of what is up there in the sky.

Unfortunately in this area cloud is a very big problem and it is aggravated by aircraft leaving

jet vapour trails all over the sky and Watford is now under the flight path of most of the

worldwide flights from Heathrow.

Assuming there are clear skies what is there up there to see?

Firstly the Rosetta mission has come to an end and the Rosetta probe has now joined its

little friend Philae on the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko after making a detailed study

of the comet and all three are now flying to the outer edges of the solar system beyond

Neptune and will only return in hundreds of year’s time. But while the comet was in close

proximity to us Rosetta return a massive amount of data which will keep scientists busy for

years to come. The main data so far returned is that the comet was carrying all the

ingredients needed to set up life on a planet in the so called Goldilocks zone of a solar

system where water can be found in a liquid form.

The other recent item of news was the discovery of a possible Rocky Planet in the Goldilocks

Zone of our nearest neighbour in our Galaxy, namely Proxima Centauri, which is four light

years away. The problem is that with present technology it would take us seventy thousand

years to get there. But the Physicist Stephen Hawking has suggested that Nano Technology

can come to our aid. We could build a tiny spacecraft which would be powered by a solar

sail and we could reach the planet in tens of years, but it could take about another 30 years

before this type of spacecraft could be built.

Currently coming into view are our two most outer planets Uranus and Neptune. To see

Neptune a telescope of least six inch aperture would be needed, but it possible to see

Uranus with a large pair of binoculars on a clear dark sky night. It will show up as a blue dot

of light and it is currently in the constellation of Pisces.

Now is the best time of the year to see our sister galaxy Andromeda, it is fairly high up in the

sky to the east of the great square of Pegasus, and with a good pair of binoculars, say 10 X

50s will show it up as an elongated fuzzy cloud, although if you wait another say three

billion years it will become very visible as it heads towards us on a collision course. We will

actually meet up with Andromeda in a billion and a half years later.

There is a meteor shower in the constellation of Orion between the 21st and the 24th of

October but Orion does not come into the dark sky until about 3 o’oclock in the morning.

The two brightest planets in the sky are now re-emerging into the heavens, namely Venus in

the early evening western sky and Jupiter into the eastern morning sky before sunrise.

The coming four months is the best time of the year to go out and observe.

Pat.

Recipe of the Month!

‘Bang, Bang Chicken Noodle Stir Fry’! Here’s a little something to start your fireworks night off with a bang! Ingredients: 4 Chicken fillets 1 tbsp Patak’s Madras Kebab paste 1 red onion 1 green pepper 1 red pepper 100g mushrooms 50g mange tout 50g sugar snap peas 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp satay sauce 2 tbsp light soy sauce 400g noodles Chopped coriander to garnish Chopped peanuts to garnish Cooking method: 1. Begin by heating a tablespoon of the sesame oil in a wok and add sliced chicken strips. Now add a tablespoon of Patak’s kebab paste and cook the chicken thoroughly, removing when cooked. Set the chicken aside and keep warm.

2. While the chicken is cooking, boil the noodles.

3. Heat a tablespoon of sesame oil in the same wok you used to cook the chicken and add your onions, peppers and mushrooms. Cook for 10 minutes on a medium heat until soft. Next add the mange tout and sugar snap peas.

4. At this stage add the satay sauce and the soy sauce and cook for a further 5 minutes, adding the cooked noodles in the process and stirring through. You can add some of the chopped pea-nuts and coriander at this stage if you want and cook through for another few minutes.

5. Place your noodle stir fry in a bowl then add your chicken on top and garnish with fresh cori-ander and crunchy peanuts. Enjoy! Do you have a recipe you’ would like to share?

Most discussed on the King-swood Facebook page this month: There's not been loads discussed on the Facebook page this month however, here is an overview of what was:

A cat attacked a resident on North ap-

proach—this is a Bengal cat, male, with green eyes. This sparked some conversa-tion with cats generally being timid howev-er, some other residents stated that they too had been attacked by the same cat. If the cat sounds like yours, please do all you can before it hurts someone else.

It came to light that there are plans in place

to increase the double yellow lines from North Approach by the shops to go further down Greenwood Drive then they do cur-rently. This has sparked some heated de-bate due to this going over dropped kerbs and there already being enough of a prob-lem with cars on the estate.

One resident on North approach reported

that someone had tried to gain entry to her property via her front door whilst she and her children were in the house. Thankfully they did not however, shook up the family. Please ensure your doors are locked, espe-cially in the run up to Christmas.
