COMING SOON - PACKER SUNDAYS! Sign up sheets will be in the lounges soon for the first big game against
the Bears on Sept. 13th. Cost will be $10.00 per person for the season’s 11 Sunday games.

Wausau Elks Team Trivia Team Trivia is off and running. September Trivia will be on Wednesday the 9th and 23rd, starting promptly at 7:00p.m. (usually done by 8:45p.m.). After talking to some of the members this
summer, a couple of the comments they have is “They’re not smart enough for trivia” or “They don’t know enough people to have a team”. Since Team Trivia has started, almost every team has won only once, and some teams that have won have been put together with members and guests that have never met until that night. Please come down and check it out. What a great way to
learn something new, laugh, and meet some new people. Contact Scott Waldhart, Annie Hanke, or Scott Johnson with any questions.
Take a few minutes to enjoy the beauty of the outdoor
landscaping of the Elks Lodge. We are proud to be
located in downtown Wausau and thankful for the many
volunteers who keep our building appearance top notch.

Looking for volunteers for Oktoberfest. Please sign up at the lodge. Also please indicate hours are best for you and we will try to make that happen. On Oktoberfest we will also be partnering with Wausau Events Harvest Fest. We will be doing a penny pitch for the kids. All will receive apple slices and caramel dip. It gives us the opportunity to invite guests for dinner and the dance that afternoon and evening. Check the lodge to purchaser your tickets. It is a great time to invite close friends and relatives to enjoy the food and see the lodge. Lots of food, drinks, live music and dance. Wonderful time for all.
Festival of Arts – Downtown Wausau September 12th, 10:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. and September 13th, 10:00a.m. - 4:00p.m.
(Same weekend as the State Elks Convention in Appleton, Our Officers & Committee members will need to be in Appleton)
We are looking for volunteers to help us with the food booth that will be on either Jefferson
Street or McClellan Street (not in front of the Elks). Even if you can only help for a couple
of hours or a shift, it would be greatly appreciated. We have changed up our menu for this
event, we are offering Grilled Sweet Corn, Mac N Cheese, and joining us this year is the
“Sauce Boss” aka Kim Lemke and his famous Pulled Pork Sundae’s. Please contact either
Scott Waldhart at 715-551-3113 or Herb Lessmiller at 715-570-3260.

After high school I attended the NTC and received a degree in Police Science. During
the last week of my second year, instructor Rick Kramer (PER 248) gave us one last
lecture. "As law enforcement agents you will always be in the publics eye. Your actions
will speak much better for you then your words ever will. Be honest, be helpful, and
always do your job with compassion."
To date your lodge has given back more then $2,600,000.00 to the greater Wausau
community. Although that figure is yet another reason you should be proud to be an
Elk, what is really important is what our actions did. They fed the hungry, clothed cold
children, built ramps for the disabled, promoted a strong anti-drug message for the
youth, provided college bound students with financial assistance, sent kids with special needs to camp,
provided gloves for our veterans and much, much more.
My question to you is what part of that $2,600,000.00 did you help with?
What do you do to help that astounding number continue to grow?
Did you help with serving on the 400 block ?
Did you give up a Saturday morning and help with soccer or hoop shoot ?
Did you sell raffle tickets ?
Did you sponsor a new member ?
Did you help with Smelt fry ?
Do you help with Youth Heritage Days?
Someday we will all be just a memory.
So how will you be remembered... by your words or by your deeds?

Best Kept secrets.....WAUSAU LODGE 248 By: PER Rick Kramer There are a group of Elk Members that have organized an annual camp out week-end. My wife Janis and I stayed with that group on their second annual outing in Gresham, WI. at Annie's Camp-ground. We had a memorable time. Karl Hanke and Annie assisted by Kevin McCarthy prepared and cooked to perfection Friday night Fish dinner. Saturday breakfast, Lunch, and Evening meal of Slow Cooked Brisket followed up by Sunday morning breakfast. All the food was as outstanding as those who prepared it. Week-end Activities consisted of a Northern Lights Watch....bean bag toss competition...ladder golf competition...Lite A Tree demonstrations...balloon bust competition and an adult game too funny to tell you about...you had to be there...prizes were you could consume your chosen beverage if you had one or two or three....... You certainly missed a fun week-end ..Elks Care....Elks Share....Join us next year. Something to consider for next year...fun time...fun people, inexpensive week-end.
People who don't listen have been with us for thousands of years. You may recall that Phaeton wouldn't listen to Apollo and wound up dead. And remember Bellaphron, who rode Pegasus and wouldn't listen to Zeus and tried to ride Pegasus up to Olympus. Bellaphron lost his horse and his honor, and eventually died. Then there were Otus and Ephialtes, two brothers who were giants who wouldn't listen as they were warned not to mess around with Artemis, the goddess. They wound up dead, too. Finally, we have Icarus who wouldn't listen to his daddy, Daedelus, and flew too close to the sun and died. These Greeks, did they ever listen? Well, thank goodness we're Elks, not ancient Greeks. We know how to listen. Your 6168 Lecturing Knight says, "Ever practice Brotherly Love." Notice he says ever, not sometimes, or just when you feel like it. Your Loyal Knight says, "Be just to your fellow man." That means be fair, be honest, be understanding. Your Leading Knight says, "Be charitable to all mankind." Your Exalted Ruler says, "Strive diligently that the name of Elk as borne by you may be worthy of an American citizen -- one who loves his fellow man." Do you listen when they say those things? More importantly, do you live these ideals? As Elks we are not asked to be like everyone else -- we are committed to a life of higher calling. Our solemn oath requires that calling. Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, Fidelity -- and a sense of belonging to something more important than ourselves; that's what we are called to do. If you're part of that, I guess you listen really well. But if you aren't part of that, you just aren't listening hard enough. Listen: Anyone can be Phaeton or Bellaphron or Icarus or Otus, but there is only one you. You need to listen. We need you to listen. ~ Tom Williams Exalted Ruler, Raleigh Elks Lodge -- from the May 2004 lodge newsletter.

If you go to Elks.org, you will find an article from GER Ronald Hicks on how orientation can be key to increasing membership and retaining members. He notes the importance of getting a commitment from new members early on to participating in an upcoming event. While I am not a new Elk, I am somewhat new to the Wausau Elks, having transferred from Two Rivers. That puts me in a position to both agree with the article and make some suggestions to go even further. Entering a new lodge – or any organization – can be overwhelming. Faces are new, positions and roles not clear, and the overall functioning of the lodge can be intimidating. Having someone encouraging a new member to get involved – a mentor if you will – seems to me to be a key to any organization. In my case, I have Chuck Berens who has made every effort to bring me up to speed with the workings of this lodge. Yet even with his efforts, I noted at the picnic held on Aug. 15 that I knew a fairly small percentage of those in attendance. We have 13 proposed members waiting initiation. While each of them has a sponsor who is presently an Elk, how many have someone who is active and who will encourage the new member to be active as well? How many will call a new member and ask if they need a ride to the next meeting? I felt warmly welcomed into this lodge, even to the point of being asked to be secretary. But do all of our new members feel the same? If we can answer “yes” to these questions, I feel we will make great strides in membership growth and retention.

LODGE LORE As was told earlier, Wausau Elks Lodge #248 was chartered on December 19, 1892 with 19 Charter Members. The Corner Stone of our present building was laid on June 17, 1923 and the building completed and dedicated September 3,4,5,6, & 8 of 1924. Over the years there have been many additions and renovations to the building, including renovations to the social rooms, an elevator, new and renovated rest room facilities, and many other changes. All of this was done in addition to the more than $2 million dollars in help to the Wausau Community that has been given over the years. Then of course there have been the donations to State programs like Camp Wawbeek as well as the National Foundation. One decorative item in our Lodge deserves special mention. When visiting the Lodge Room, one cannot help but admire the large painting of an Elk’s head on the back wall of the stage. This was done in 1981 as a gift to the Lodge by Julie Rice, fiance of member Mitchell Luedtke. I think that we all have admired the talent, effort and generosity that went into this artwork and are pleased that it has been preserved. The Mikes (Maher & Rebhahn, Lodge Historians)
Just a friendly reminder, the Sickness and Distress Committee is happy to do hospital visits and send out cards to our Elk members in good standing. Please remember to notify us if you hear of an Elk Member’s sickness or passing. We are here to let them know we stand together as Elks and are praying and thinking of them in their time of need. If you would like to purchase and put a card out for a nonmember, please feel free to do so. Elks are always willing to send cheerful thoughts and well wishes to Family members of fellow Elks. Just Remember, these cards will not be monitored by the Sickness and Distress Committee. Please notify Mary Schneider at 715 409 9816, [email protected], Rick Gesicki at 715 241 0970, [email protected] or Wendy McCarthy at 715 573 2502, [email protected] if you would like a card put out. If you have any questions, please contact one of the committee members.

Hello my fellow Elks, the feed the needy program still needs sponsors for Nov. 17th. The sponsor’s responsibilities are to plan the menu, gather a crew of Elks, friends or Family,
Purchase, prepare, and serve the needy at St Paul’s Church, two blocks from the Lodge. The program is funded by the Beacon Grant, there is no out of pocket expense (unless you want to do something special on your own). If you decide to take the date for this special program, I will give you all the guidance you need. There really isn't that much to do, usually if you start
cooking around two o'clock you will be ready to serve by 4:30 and all cleaned up and ready to go home by 6:30. Let me know as soon as possible so we can get planning. Thank you in advance,
call me with any questions (715) 573-2519 [email protected] Kevin McCarthy, President PER Assn, Wausau 248
Have a great day!

see all Wausau Elk Members there. Please invite and bring those good Elk prospects as guests. Bring your neighbors, nieces, nephews, children,
grandchildren, co-workers, and share the benefits of our wonderful Wausau Elks Lodge #248. We will be advertising to the public as well as boards in front of the lodge with the information about that Sunday. The Membership Committee (Scott Waldhart, John Mijal, and Marty Sullivan) is open to any other suggestions or ideas
that can bring more people to the Wausau Lodge. Hope to see you there!

Wausau Elks Lodge Donates Supplies to Needy Children The Wausau Elks Lodge #248 received a 2015 Beacon Grant and used the funds in partnership with St. Paul's Church to provide supplies to needy children. Elks Wendy McCarthy and Annie Hanke shopped for supplies for needy children with funds from the Elks Beacon Grant and donated 2,400 baby wipes, 5 bottles of shampoo, 5 bottles of lotion and 4 diaper rash ointments to St. Paul's Church. The $2000.00 Beacon Grant was created by the Elks National Foundation as a Community Investment Program. The Grants need to be used in a visible and meaningful way to benefit the community, promote the Lodge's image in the community, attract new members and show the good things that Elks do. Please support the Elks National Foundation.
