Ricardo Software, the BurrRidge, Ill., division of Ri-cardo Inc., has unveiled the

latest addition to its engine modelingsoftware package. WAVE v5 is a one-dimensional gas dynamics simulationsoftware suite designed for simulationand modeling of air and combustion gasflowsin diesel and gasoline engines.

WAVE is designed to enable per-formance simulations to be carried outbased on virtually any intake, combus-tion and exhaust system design. Typicaldevelopment applications include:

    Engine performance and turbo-charger matching.

Intake and exhaust system design.Coupled engine control and drive-line simulation.

    Advanced diesel and spark-ignitioncombustion analysis.

Thermal analysis of combustionchamber components and exhaustsystem warm-up.

WAVE v5 now features more ad-vanced preprocessors such as a built-in knowledge-based 3D ComponentModeler/Automatic Mesher (Wave-Build3D) and a WAVE CAD mesherfrom STL import. These new preproc-essors enable users to create complexmodelsvery quickly and accurately, thecompany said.

Another key attribute of the newest

WAVE generation involvesitsability toautomate key elements of the simula-tion process. According to the compa-ny, current generation 1D simulationprograms entail significant time spentpreparing the engine flow network, anactivity that adds little engineeringvalue. WAVE v5 providestoolsto auto-mate thisroutine activity, which reducesthe development cycle time. WithWAVE v5,userscan now automate the

preprocessing of engine flow networksespecially complex/irregular geome-tries such as manifolds, catalysts, aircleaners, etc. using tools such as theWAVE CAD mesher and the newbuilt-in solid modeler, said FawzanAlsharif, businessdevelopment managerat Ricardo Software.

WAVE v5 also provides tools forautomating run sweep generation, per-forming parametric designsand mathe-matical operationsfor the manipulationof input data, aswell asabuilt-in auto-calibration capability where users canautomate the task of matching simula-tion results with measured data. Thesefeaturescan significantly reduce develop-ment cycle time, the company said. Inaddition, the software incorporatesintel-

ligent defaults, based on Ricardosexpe-rience, to any engine model flow net-work component created with WAVE.Optimization using DoE isalso possible, using simple manual tuning tools. The new software contains upgrades

and additions in the areas of three-dimensional component automation,

advanced physical models, post-processing and usability. It allows usersto get results faster and provides mod-els for predicting engine-out emis-sions, the performance of aftertreat-ment systems and the behavior ofmore complex combustion systems. Italso incorporates enhancements to itsvariable valve timing capability and canmodel variable geometry turbochargercharacteristics.

1D codestypically allow themodel-ing of combustion using input combus-tion data (correlational models) or bymeansof predictive/empirical models,Alsharif added. WAVE v5 standsout inthat it provides full 3D CFD capabilityfor modeling diesel combustion. Thisshould allow engine performance ana-lystsin the diesel industry to perform themost complex combustion calculationfrom within the WAVE environment, while benefiting from WAVEscapabili-ties at producing results for the overallengine system designs.

WAVE v5 also allows the user toimport STL filesand easily mesh acom-plex component using the new WAVECAD Mesher. This provides, R icardosaid, higher productivity and lower user-to-user modeling variability enabling aprocess of mesh to model in minutes.Designing components occurs at acomponent level, so thisisalmost like aparadigm shift, said Alsharif. Tradi-tionally, 1D simulation codes allowed

modeling flow networksusing primitiveobjectssuch asductsand junctions. The new XML file format tech-

nology allows modeling, storage andmodification of components using thenew component browser that allowsmanagement of component reposito-ries, such as intake manifolds, exhaustmanifolds or engine resonators.

    design technology

WAVE v5 is designed to enable per-

formance simulations to be carried out

based on virtually any intake, combus-

    tion and exhaust system design.

Another key attribute involves its ability

to automate key elements of the simu-

    lation process.
