Main issueheat and mass transfer in thin films under counter-current gas iscrucial in chemical applications, e.g. absorption of CO2 in packedtowers and distillation [Valluri et al., Chem. Eng. Sci. 2005]

measurements of heat and mass transfer in packed towers arelaboriousCFD is decisive for full flow analysis and support industrial design

Waves intensify heat and mass transfers because increase the interfacialgas-liquid area [McCready & Hanratty, AIChE 1965]

DassFlow solver: brief

DassFlow is our DNS flow solver developed by LIMSI andIMT/INSA Toulouse: open-source, 2D, unstructured meshparallelized with MPI while keeping high performances (tested up to600 cores on French supercomputers: ' 1.1µs/dt/cell)Formulation: two-fluid model (one velocity and one pressure in eachpoint)

no advection or reconstruct the interface (the interface is captured bythe scheme through the volume fraction) −→ easy implementationdiffuse interface model −→ interface diffusion: low diffusivenumerical schemes are necessary

Method: compressible modeleasier implementation and general useill conditioned for low Mach flows −→ low-Mach scheme is necessary

Schemes: finite volume, second-order numerical schemesFeature: surface tension, non-isothermal, 3D (ongoing)

Two-fluid modelIndex 1 and 2 for liquid and gas phases

One velocity u and one mixture pressure p in each point:

∂t ρ̃1 +∇ · (ρ̃1u) = 0 , ρ̃1 = α1ρ1

∂t ρ̃2 +∇ · (ρ̃2u) = 0 , ρ̃2 = α2ρ2

∂t [(ρ̃1 + ρ̃2)u] +∇ · [(ρ̃1 + ρ̃2)u⊗ u + pI] = ∇ · (τv + τc) + (ρ̃1 + ρ̃2)g

Relation between p and ρ̃ to close the set of equations:

p1 = p0 + c21 (ρ̃1/α1 − ρ0)p2 = p0 + c22 (ρ̃2/α2 − ρ0)

α1 + α2 = 1

Viscous stress: τv = −2/3µ∇ · uI + µ(∇u +∇uT )Capillary tensor (CSS formulation): τc = σ

Conclusions and perspectives

Results:validation of DassFlow:

celerity and growth of linear waves in good agreement withOrr-Sommerfeld resultsnon-linear wave profiles in good agreement with experiments of thinfilms with and without counter-current laminar gas

Future tasks:validation of the heat transfer numerical module of DassFlow againstexperiments performed at FASToptimization of flooding regimes in confined film-gas flows (findoptimum regime to intensify heat transfer avoiding flooding)
