Its almost the end of the year - school holidays are coming and work is winding down at the office. One thing’s for sure; it’s the time of the year when the social calendar starts packing with activities like gatherings, parties and events. With so many social events going on; have you thought about what you’re going to wear for each occasion? Don’t fret, as we drew inspiration from the streets to suggest how you can look chic and unique for each occasion without burning a hole in the pocket.

Dress up for the occasion!

● Go for shorter lengthsGround sweeping, floor length gowns are glamorous for the Oscars but impractical for proms, especially if there’s an afterparty or supper afterwards. A shorter dress is more trendy, youthful and also practical.

● Buy your dress earlyYou want your dress to be perfect; so buy it early, especially if purchasing online - factor in the time required for pre-ordering, shipping and also any alterations afterwards. Last minute shopping can be pressurising and disappointing; hence give yourself more time to find THE dress and take advantage of any good deals.

● Accessorize, accessorize, accessorizeWorried that someone else might buy the same dress as you? Or do you feel that all the dress options are lacking? The easiest way to bring your personality and style to an outfit is to accessorize with statement pieces. Pair your dress with patterned stockings for an edgier look or wear one-of-a-kind vintage jewelry. Accessories will complete the look for the night and can also be matched with other outfits later.

As a teenager; prom night was the social highlight of the year in my school. Each girl secretly dreamt of being the belle of the ball dressed in the finest gown, hoping to impress the cute boy who we were too shy to talk to. Only problem was; there was no way our 16 year old budgets could afford such lavish frocks and long ball gowns which would be an overkill for our school’s non air-conditioned assembly hall, where the event was held.

The good news is that you now have much more dress options and are no longer limited to buying from a store. With the explosion of blogshops and online retailers; you are spoilt for choice when it comes to variety, affordability and convenience.

Here’s some ideas on how to score the perfect prom look:

Styling tips for picking vibrant outfits suitable for both work and play:

● Pick a conservative-style dressShift and shirt dresses are work-appropriate closet staples but pick one in prints to stand out from the crowd. Feel self conscious in the office? Throw on a dark cardigan in the day if your work requires you to look sombre. Since the prints of your dress will be quite loud; avoid anything that is too revealing or complicating.

● Tone down with solid, neutral colored accessoriesAvoid bags and shoes with busy details when wearing a printed dress. Your dress should be the main focal point of the outfit, so fuss free accessories will pull the look together.

● Try color blockingIf prints are really not your thing; try colour blocking two complementary colors like blue and orange. This is a chic look that will take you from day to night without looking boring. Better still, you probably already have two different coloured items in your wardrobe that you’ve never thought to wear together in the same outfit.

After Work Party

There is an office gathering after work; and your colleagues have planned the event at a nice relaxing restaurant. You want to look vibrant; but also feel relaxed so that you can enjoy the dinner after work.

If you’re the type to gravitate towards neutrals and dark colours for work; this is the time to break away and inject some bold colours to your outfit. Bohemian prints and colour blocking are all the range this season and we’ll show you how some women carry off this trend effortlessly.

Lucky you if you have an exciting special event coming up! Functions and parties are events that call for a little more glitz, fun and glamour so don’t be afraid to take things up a notch or two!

Here’s how you can be party ready:

● The shinier and brighter, the betterThis is not the time to be a wallflower! Bring on the glitter and shiny fabrics; it instantly puts you in a festive mood. Anything that is gold, silver and sparkly general stands well during this period. If sequins are simply too disco for you; opt for a dress or top in a bright hue.

● Carry a small purseEvery girl’s essential. You don’t want to be lugging around a tote bag so carry a purse which won’t hinder your movements. Something with a sling is best.

● Carry or wear a conversation-starting pieceIf you’ve ever been in an awkward social situation, you will know what I mean! You can use an interesting or unique item to start conversations and find common interests between new friends. A vintage dress or accessory is always a good starting point; as you can share a bit of its history and try to get other people engaged in conversation. great way to get to know new people!

Planning a bachelorette party and don't know where to start? Here are some easy tips to help you plan a smashing evening for the bride-to-be!

The BrideKnow your bride. Understand her needs and her comfort zone. Find out her limitations and which rules can be bent. Is she comfortable with the limelight? Does the phrase ‘all eyes on you’ make her squirm? Does she like hogging the limelight? If she doesn’t then don’t force it on her and if she does, feel free to make her presence felt all around. Make sure you plan a party based on the Bride’s needs and not yours!

The GuestlistIt is crucial to ensure that the people you invite are the same girls the bride would invite herself. Make sure to cross check your list of girls with hers to avoid potential disaster. The bride will be devastated if one of her cousins or close friends is left out and she’ll be weirded out if a whole bunch of strangers are walking around!

The Activities & BudgetChoose a theme and get everyone to dress accordingly, pick a proper place and plan the activities out before hand! We don’t want everyone to get together and just stare at each other. Evaluate the dynamics of the group, will an intimate dinner suffice? Or a group cocktail party perhaps. Maybe a spa day or the downright wild party! Work out the budget and make sure you list everything down. Planning ahead and figuring out set prices per person will give the other girls a chance to save up for the event and should prevent any miscommunication over price prior to the party. Here are some additional ideas:

Adventure Bachelorette – go hiking, rafting, horseback riding, camping – really any outdoor activity she enjoys.

Beach Weekend – enjoy some sun, sand, and plenty of tropical beverages.

Casino Night – all bets are on! Set up game tables, break out the decks, and test your luck with a roll of the dice. A casino night is also a good bet for a co-ed bash.

Retail Therapy - gather the crew for a day of boutique shopping. Make it more festive and rent a limo to chauffeur you as you pop in and out of the bride’s favorite stores.

Wedding Bells are a call for a...

throw a Budget Dinner Party?

Wish to gather your friends for a dinner party but you’re falling short in the money department? Fret not as we look into ways you can throw a fabulous party without having to stretch the budget or without any cost!

When you budget for your party, do so before you start shopping. Figure out how much you can spend on your party, overall. List the items you need and estimate what you can afford to spend on each item.

Have a theme, for example if it’s a finger-food only party, girl’s or boy’s night in or Asian Night. With a theme you can start your preparations on a much clearer level.

Buy some fun paper napkins for the cocktails. Stay within your colours if you can, but a little humour on the napkin will get the party off to a great start.

Limit the number of guests. If you invite more people it will definitely cost you more money to prepare food for them. Keep the number of invited guests smaller and it won’t be such a strain on your budget.

Although you are on a tight budget for the party, do remember that having fun is a must and if the above are followed, you can have a terrific party for your guests.

Prepare the food yourself. Bake your own cake or serve sliced homemade snack cakes instead

of ordering a personalized cake from the grocery store or catering some food.

Aim for a simple, balanced menu. For a dinner party, a simple snack or appetizer, salad or soup, vegetables, and a main course followed by a simple dessert make a nice, well-rounded meal.

Create a pot-luck where your guests can bring something to the dinner party but make sure there is no repetition of the dishes. So plan ahead with your guests as to who brings what. This way you do not incur any extra cost plus each guests can sample each other’s cooking.

Make sure there is music playing as you do not want to have awkward silences in the room. For that, you don’t have to hire a DJ as that is expensive but just pick out some good CDs that you already have in your house or play music stored in your computer.

Be creative when presenting the food or the ambience. If you have flowers in your garden, assemble them in a beautiful vase or basket as a lovely centre-piece.

If you hate washing up, create foods that can be eaten on cocktail sticks or buy some paper-plates and paper-cups on bulk as it costs lesser and you can throw it away after using hence solving your problem of washing!

The key to entertaining on a budget without sacrificing flair is to think presentation. You

can make anything look special: a tray of cold cuts on a bed of curly lettuce, utensils

standing in a cup tied in ribbon, napkins folded into birds. You can make food canapés by buying bread and cut it small squares and

creatively add toppings that are in-expensive.

One on One with

Adnan Sami

Having been dubbed the Sultan of Song, Bollywood’s musical maestro Adnan Sami graced the stage of Marina Bay Sands during his first ever performance in Singapore on the 7th of October, 2011. During the concert, which was organised by De Ideaz Pte Ltd, Adnan Sami wowed the audience with his much loved Hindi hits such as Bheegi Bheegi and his popular songs like Lift Kara De which won a standing ovation from the crowd. WAVES Lifestyle caught up with Adnan Sami for a quick chat after the concert was over to find out how he felt about his experience performing in Singapore and what more is in store for his audience.

Page 15: Waves Lifestyle Issue #05 (Nov 2011)

On Singapore...Did you know that the first piece of professional recording equipment that Adnan Sami received from his father was purchased from Singapore? Neither did we until we heard it from the man himself! Singapore has a historical connection with Mr Sami, for that piece of equipment played a huge role in training him with respect to multitrack recording, allowing him to become the music maestro he is today.

How else does Adnan Sami like Singapore? It’s clean, green and filled with courteous people, he told us. Although initially warned that Singaporeans are conservative when it comes to applauding great performances, he had a pleasant surprise when he found otherwise. Adnan Sami believes that everyone has their own way of expressing their love for music, and was delighted to get an open and accepting response from his adoring Singaporean crowd.

On Weight Loss Tips...Having lost over 100 kilos in a matter of months, we asked Adnan Sami to provide us with tips for anybody who is determined to shed some pounds in order to stay fit and healthy. Here’s what he had to say:

“First of all, I will give the tip which I was given by my nutritionist before I started on my diet. “I’m not going to presribe a diet to you, I will prescribed a lifestyle to you,” she said. Stick to those words, don’t just go on a rigorous diet and then party it all out when you lose weight.”

“For some people, being heavy is part of our genes and if you have to address the situation, you must tell yourself that you can never be in a carefree environment where you

can freak out so much as your body is just going to gain back the kilos quickly. So you must always be on your toes.”

“Come up with a realistic plan that you can follow for the rest of your life! I have a thing for non-vegetarian food, and although my nutritionist said that I can go ahead and eat as much non-vegeatarian food as I want, I had to make sure it’s not fried or oily - it had to be grilled. Don’t deprive yourself from what you like, just take the healthier option.”

On Travelling...We asked Mr Sami to provide us with his favourite travel destinations, having visited many places for work as well as during trips with his family. He explained to us that his favourite destinations were classifieds into different types, the first being absolute relaxation, where his top destination was Langkawi followed by the Bahamas. He went on to explain that he also loves shopping and sightseeing and his hot spots to do that were New York, Orlando and Las Vegas in America. In addition, being a man who is fond of history, he believed that India’s amazing history, as well as Turkey and Egypt’s historical sites are a must see for anyone!

On What’s Next?...Look forward to an upcoming album where Adnan Sami collaborates with blockbuster film company Yash Raj Films, providing his audience with tunes from genres that we have not seen Mr Sami touch, including Sufi and Bhangra tracks. Don’t forget to catch him in a city near you for he will also be on his World Tour, interacting with his loving audience and gaining motivation from them to keep doing what he loves - providing us with great music!

Say Hello to

Ms Muslimah, Dika Restiyani

Photo & Interview credits: sixteenr.com

An Interview with Indonesia’s Ms Muslimah and what her thoughts are on the modest fashion industry.

Page 17: Waves Lifestyle Issue #05 (Nov 2011)

Why did you run for Ms Muslimah? In the Muslimah Beauty contest, the finalists are all covered. Not an inch of skin shows, except for the face and hands. I ran for the Muslimah Beauty competition because I thought this is a different kind of beauty pageant where we were measured not only by physical appearance, but also by knowledge, emotional and spiritual intelligence. Candidates for the pageant had to fulfill a number of requirements to enter. The contest was only open to Muslim Indonesian women between the ages of 18 and 24, over 165cm in height, who wore the hijab every day and were fluent in another foreign language. It is a very competitive contest and that’s why I tried it out.

What does it mean to be Ms Muslimah? To be a Muslimah Beauty is a big responsibility, because a Muslimah Beauty is the icon and role model of young Muslim women in Indonesia and also represents Indonesian Muslim women to the world at large.

Any misconceptions about the Ms Muslimah pageant you would like to change? It is not just an ordinary beauty pageant, because it’s not just about ‘Brain, Beauty, and Behavior’ but it’s also about being a Muslim. Ten finalists were placed under “quarantine” and also received a crash course in public speaking and modeling.

What will you do as Ms Muslimah?I want to popularise Indonesian Muslim Fashion to the world by encouraging Muslim women to wear the hijab.

Why is Muslimah fashion important?Muslimah fashion is important because it’s a signature style and identity for a Muslimah. Muslimah fashion nowadays is very fashionable and comfortable to wear. The fashion designers in Indonesia are exploring their creativity in making their master pieces. In my opinion, Muslim fashion in Indonesia has reached the high fashion stage now.

How do you spend your weekends? In Jakarta, I used to spend my spare time with my family and at a volunteer group; Pelangi (Peduli Anak Untuk Negeri). It’s a non-profit organisation that provides children’s education for free. I also frequently fly between Jakarta, where I attend to my business and social work on weekends, and go back to Singapore on weekdays to study at the Nanyang Technological University. I’ve been running my own small home-business that produces and sells dolls since 2006. I usually go to bookstores or buy groceries at shopping centers. I also love to spend my weekends with friends and family for karaoke or watch movies at the malls. My hobbies are reading, modeling, singing, drawing, business, social activities and sports.

What are your favourite books/food/quote?My favorite books are any books written by Jallaludin Rumi and Kahlil gibran, they are my favorite authors. I love Indonesian food, and I always eat kerupuk (Indonesian crackers) and sambal (Indonesian traditional chili sauce). Other than Indonesian food, I also love sushi. My favorite quote is “Don’t allow yourself to be in a dark place, because in the dark..even your shadow will leave you.” (H. Achmad Bakrie)

My style signature is ...Simple, modern, sophisticated.

My all-time favorite designers are ...Irna Mutiara, Dian Pelangi, Boyonz Ilyas, Malik Moestaram, Merry Pramono, Najua Yanti and Shafira.

My favorite magazines and blogs are ...Noor Magazine, Aquila Asia and Waves Magazine. My Favorite blogs are Dian Rainbow and sixteenR.com.

You wear a hijab because ...I feel secured, comfortable and have the freedom to express my identity as a Muslim. Scarves empowers women because it’s our true identity as a Muslim.

Paradise at Tanjung Balau

TrAVEL

Page 19: Waves Lifestyle Issue #05 (Nov 2011)

Another weekend came with no activities, so we decided to head to Tanjung Balau, Desaru. Taking the new Senai-Desaru Expressway was quite an experience. The 77km highway cuts the journey time from over 2 hours to less than 1 so it’s quite a huge difference. The toll prices are fairly reasonable, ranging from RM11.20 from Senai to Penawar exit and RM8.20 from Ulu Tiram to Penawar exit. The highlight of the expressway is the Sungai Johor Bridge which is said to be the longest river bridge in Malaysia. The bridge looks a lot like the Penang bridge and has a splendid scenic view of the ocean. There is a shipwreck visible alongside the bridge which adds to the majestic view.

Exiting at Penawar, we took the Desaru road and turned off to Tanjung Balau. The signboards are pretty clear so there’s no confusion whatsoever. As a precaution, just follow the Tanjung Balau Fishermen’s Museum signboards. As we reached our destination, we were surprised to see that quite a big crowd of picnickers were there enjoying the sun, sand and the sea. The beach was perfect with clean turquoise seas and various facilities including stalls, a children playground and souvenir shops. Desaru is known for its rough waters and cascading sea sand, but Tanjung Balau surprisingly has calmer waters and I have been told that the sand is not steep either.

As the plan was just for a picnic getaway and not a stay over, we found ourselves a nice shady spot to set up camp and headed for the sea. Hours at sea seem like minutes when the waters are calm, clean and the company is good. After being sunburned for a few hours in the waters, we decided to head back to shore and check out the surrounding facilities. Worth a mention are the clean public toilets with shower amenities and attentive lifeguards who blare out on the speakers when swimmers are seen at dangerous and rocky stone spots.

The South Johor Development Authority (KEJORA) does most of the management at Tanjung Balau. The nearest attraction is the Tanjung Balau Fisherman Museum established more that 18 years ago to highlight the area’s local fishery activities and its historic legacy. Opened in 1992, Tanjung Balau was chosen for the museum, as it is the oldest fishing village in Johor founded by anglers who came from the east coast states of the Peninsula. The museum is divided into five galleries including the Fishermen’s Gallery displaying the life of fishermen in the Tanjung Balau, their vessels, tools, rituals and types of fishes they caught. The geology gallery exhibits over 100 unique stones aged over millions of years, all found in Tanjung Balau and its surrounding areas. The Sea Safety gallery provides knowledge to visitors on marine navigation and communication systems as well as safety aspects at sea. The Desaru Shipwreck gallery is the most fascinating section as is showcases the ‘Desaru Ship’ that was a Chinese vessel that sank in the 1840s with a cargo load of assorted Chinese porcelain and other treasures.

We stopped by the stalls nearby for a refreshing coconut drink and had a chat with the owner who mentioned the changes that the new highway has brought. The stalls were set up by KEJORA and with the highway in place; the number of patrons to the beach has more than doubled. He also mentioned how the highway has also made it easier for the villagers to head to JB town and they feel more connected with the town folk now.

We headed back that evening feeling truly satisfied. Tanjung Balau is indeed a lesser-known paradise in Johor that should be visited and savored by all. For those who prefer to stay over, the beach has resorts and chalets nearby. So take the Desaru expressway and head down today for a relaxing weekend!

hole 1A dog leg left Par 4 playing 385 meters from the Blue Tee. O.B on the left side with a Fairway Bunker to punish for any inaccurate tee off. Reachable in 2 for most golfers.

hole 2An easy hole with an index of 15, guarded by 2 greenside Bunkers. At a distance of 150 meters from the Blue Tee, this Par 3 hole is a rewarding hole for all golfers.

hole 3 O.B on the right. A hole that is no good for anyone who slices their tee shot and a Fairway Bunker guarding the left for those who pull their tee shots. The lowest index hole of the course, a Par 5 with a distance of 515 meters from Blue Tee Box. You need to lay up your third shot before the big Monsoon Drain to score well.

hole 4A straight Par 4 with a distance of 375 meters from Blue Tee box. You need an accurate approach as Thick Rough and a Pond on the left will escalate your score.

hole 5 The second Par 3 playing a distance of 155 meters from Blue Tee Box. You need to carry the Pond with O.B on the right and a greenside Bunker waiting on the left. There are golfers who landed on the green in one, yet managed to put back to the Fairway.

hole 6A 90 degrees dog leg right Par 4 with a distance of 385 meters from the Blue Tee Box. A favourite hole for those who slice their tee shot. Your approach could be only 100 meters to the green. There are golfers who are on the green in one and putting for Eagle on this interesting hole.

hole 7Considered a short Par 5 playing only 460 meters from Blue Tee Box. A little dog leg right. A good Tiger Line tee off can possibly land you about 200 meters to the green.

hole 8A straight Par 4 measuring 375 meters from the Blue Tee Box. If you’re not careful, your tee shot will land on the hilly Rough on the right, making a regulation approach impossible. Bunkers on the left and right to punish any inaccurate approach to the green.

hole 9Only 295 meters Par 4, from the Blue Tee Box. A scoring hole with O.B on the left hand and a Bunker guarding the green. Be extra careful if you slice your tee shot as you will be playing your approach uphill blocked by few big matured trees.

The external outlook reflects the high tech standards of the aviation industry and it’s well complimented by the beautifully landscaped spacious piazza, plentiful secured parking space and convenient pick up and drop off points.

“With this, the airport will not only function as a location for airplanes to arrive and depart but will also become a high-tech hub for passengers as well as cargo to the rest of the world” – Menteri Besar of Johor Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman

Looking for some good hawker dinner? Need to catch up with some friends for supper? Craving for some fried chicken? You’re probably wondering why did the fried chicken part come in that line of questioning! That’s because you can get all of the above and more at Aunty’s shop at Bukit Indah. Technically the shop’s name is not Aunty’s shop, but since a friendly aunty runs the stall, you get the picture. Aunty’s stall has been at Bukit Indah for the past 10 years and years before that at Permas Jaya.

FOOD & DrINKSAmong the hot items are her famous nasi lemak ayam goreng, mee goreng, nasi goreng and mee laksa goreng but the standout dish is her fried chicken! My original intention was to just chomp down some chicken and review it but Aunty insisted that I had some nasi lemak as well. The nasi lemak looks very good, well presented and perfect in portions. On the whole the nasi lemak is a decent dish but the chicken is a whole new chapter altogether! Aunty’s fried chicken is fresh whereby customers can pick and choose from a display of chicken marinated in Aunty’s secret recipe for the parts that they fancy and Aunty will do the rest. If you’re not in the mood for a meal and just want some chicken, you can order a 1 set plate of chopped up chicken for just RM4.50. Drinks are plentiful - choose from the regular teh and milo to different types of juices.

SErVICE & ENVIrONMENTThe service is prompt with clean tables and moderate lighting. The stall is located at the roadside along Jalan Indah 4/1 (on the right side turning about 200m before the Petronas inside Bkt Indah) so it’s not that hard to find. The stallholders keeps a keen eye on the patrons so you won’t be left stranded without being served. Once you’ve tried Aunty’s Fried Chicken, you’ll keep going back for more!

For many in JB, the mention of ‘laksa’ will automatically trigger the word ‘Kolam Air’ and that’s where this month’s lunch review was done. The legendary W.W Laksa House (the W.W stands for Water Works as it was the former name of Kolam Air) has been delighting taste buds with fabulous Johor Laksa for over 40 years now. From a humble beginning as a small family run shop, the shop is now the power house when you mention Johor Laksa!

FOOD & DrINKSThe laksa comes in small, medium and big sizes, so I ordered the medium yellow mee laksa and some otak-otak. The laksa was a delight. The gravy is not too thick, well fragranced and filled with home-made goodies of fried wantan, taupok (bean curd), fish cakes, fishballs and garnished with some shredded limau kasturi leaves. The bowl comes with a chili paste which complements the dish perfectly. Besides laksa, they also serve mee soup and dry mee. You can choose from either the yellow mee or bee hoon but since I prefer my food richer, the yellow mee is always my choice! Drinks are the usual canned or their home made barley or cincau. I had the barley and it was perfect at the end of the meal. The otak-otak served there is also a must have and it didn’t disappoint my palate.

SErVICE & ENVIrONMENTService is great but do take note that at times the lunchtime crowd can fill up the shop fast but fret not as their servers are very efficient and you won’t be waiting for long. The fans and open air keeps the shop nice and comfy. No parking issues as there is a parking lot done for the customers just beside the shop. So head down today if you have not tried this legendary laksa and enthrall your taste buds!

As an engineer and a guy who cherishes the environment, it would be my dream to see Johor Bahru (JB) to become a sustainable city. My personal understanding about a sustainable city is one that can use its own resources, has very minimum environmental issues and is a pleasant place for its dwellers.

Before I proceed further, I honestly don’t have any idea if the government has a plan or program to create JB as a sustainable city. About two years ago, there was a plan to make Pasir gudang a sustainable city, but I do not know what happened to it despite the numerous proposals prepared by experts from various sectors.

local coorDinaTeD BioDiesel ProJecT – wasTe cooking oil To BioDiselEvery household and restaurant has a kitchen for cooking meals. Without doubt we need frying oil to cook some meal but what happens to that oil after being used several times? After it turns blackish in colour (due to several cycles of cooking process), the wasted cooking oil would be thrown away down the drain or through the kitchen basin. It is incorrect to do so as it can potentially choke the drain and up to a certain stage trigger various environmental and health issues. Alternatively, it is possible for us to utilise the wasted cooking oil and transform it into fuel. A proper strategy needs to be presented to ensure this noble quest to be realised. So, instead of disposing the oil down the drain, why not the local authorities prepare a systematic system of storing and collecting the waste of cooking oil. Provide certain incentive or credit to houses, restaurants and hotels who participate in this program.

A system of collecting the waste cooking oil should be made and transported to a biodiesel plant which will be located in selected strategic district. The local government ought to invest in a biodiesel plant that processes the waste cooking oil (the raw material in this case) into biodiesel. The biodiesel plant will also create occupations to the local people and contribute to the state’s economy and growth. But the main goal of the process is to obtain a renewable source of energy. The biodiesel when compared to fossil diesel results in far less pollution. This biodiesel will be blended with fossil diesel to create B5 which means 5% biodiesel and 95% fossil diesel. This is already sufficient to save and protect the environment from vehicles producing such unfriendly and unhealthy gases.

solar ProJecTs To creaTe renewaBle source oF elecTriciTYAll houses and buildings utilise electricity as a crucial utility for living. Interestingly, the cost of electricity is getting more expensive. A basic simple house may not be impacted with the increasing cost of electricity however, houses and buildings occupying air conditioning and other heavy consuming power will have to pay higher electricity bills.

What if the local authority or the local government can come up with a solar project that can provide financial assistance, or subsidy, technical support and consultancy to houses and building to create its own electricity? I have heard that the government is planning to encourage this by allowing the concept of selling electricity to the power company if they manage to produce extra power (more than what they consume in their property).

Maybe the state government or the local authorities can make this as a pilot project and designate certain zone in JB to start off. I would love to see one or two residential areas and buildings with solar power installed on roof tops. With established solar pilot program, more similar projects can follow suit. The main benefit here is the idea to generate our own in–house electricity and save the environment (from coal burning to produce power).

more renewaBle ProJecT iDeas To suPPorT The quesT For susTainaBle ciTYOther possible projects include biomass to fuel project. The idea is to collect solid waste produces from various buildings systematically and produce energy from it. The energy can be biofuel and/or electricity. Other potential project is the rain harvesting concept. Instead of solely using the SAJ water, why not partially harvest water from rain and use them for cleaning, watering your plants, washing your cars etc. That can slash some water bill and save money.

conclusionThere are many ideas to make JB a sustainable city but it can’t be done overnight and the quest requires a collective effort and support from the local authorities. The benefit will be felt by us as it saves money, protects the environment and also helps create a healthy living place. I hope this message is read by the relevant authorities for consideration.

WHY DO WE

SLEEP?

HEALTH

So why do we sleep? We spend a third of our lives doing it. That’s over 26 years!

This is a question that has baffled scientists for centuries and the answer is, no one really knows for sure. Some

believe that sleep gives the body a chance to recuperate from the day’s activities but in reality, the amount of

energy saved by sleeping for even eight hours is miniscule!

Page 33: Waves Lifestyle Issue #05 (Nov 2011)

WHAT WOuLD HAPPEN IF WE DIDN'T SLEEP?A good way to understand the role of sleep is to look at what would happen if we didn't sleep. Lack of sleep has serious effects on our brain's ability to function. If you've ever pulled an all-nighter, you'll be familiar with the following after-effects: grumpiness, grogginess, irritability and forgetfulness. After just one night without sleep, concentration becomes more difficult and attention span shortens considerably. Simply said our brain begins to malfunction without sleep!

HOW MuCH SLEEP IS rEquIrED?There is no set amount of time that everyone needs to sleep, since it varies from person to person. Results from the sleep profiler indicate that people like to sleep anywhere between 5 and 11 hours, with the average being 7.75 hours.

Jim Horne from Loughborough University's Sleep Research Centre has a simple answer though: "The amount of sleep we require is what we need not to be sleepy in the daytime."

Even animals require varied amounts of sleep:

The current world record for the longest period without sleep is 11 days, set by Randy gardner in 1965. Four days into the research, he began hallucinating. This was followed by a delusion where he thought he was a famous footballer. Surprisingly, Randy was actually functioning quite well at the end of his research and he could still beat the scientist at pinball.

SLEEP DEBTSleep debt is the effect of not getting enough rest and sleep; a large debt causes mental, emotional and physical fatigue.

Sleep debt results in diminished abilities to perform high-level cognitive functions. Neurophysiological and functional imaging studies have demonstrated that frontal regions of the brain are particularly responsive to homeostatic sleep pressure.

Scientists do not agree on how much sleep debt it is possible to accumulate; whether it is accumulated against an individual's average sleep or some other benchmark; nor on whether the prevalence of sleep debt among adults has changed appreciably in the industrialized world in recent decades. It is likely that children are sleeping less than previously in Western societies.

GENETICSIt is suspected that a considerable amount of sleep-related behavior, such as when and how long a person needs to sleep, is regulated by our genetics. Researchers have discovered some evidence that seems to support this assumption.

So the moral of the story is to know your sleep routine, know how your body functions and recognise how much sleep you need in order to function well. And take it from WAVES, get enough rest to perform at your best.

ASK

Dear Martha,

I found out that my friend is having an extra-marital affair and she is indecisive as to divorce her husband or not and move forward with her new found love. I do not know if or not I should say anything to her.

Dear Anonymous,

In the first place, does your friend want any advice from you? You have not elaborated as to why she wishes to divorce (i.e. a bad marriage?). However, what your friend need is a marriage counselor. Through counseling, she may be able to think more clearly if her marriage is worth giving up for the new found love. Hope she is able to seek the right direction soon as legally it is wrong and hurtful to all parties

Dear Martha,

I have my boss as my friend on Facebook and I feel that he is using this to spy on my movements. I am afraid to “un-friend” him as it will offend him.

Dear Confused,

Your problem can be simply solved by blocking your boss from reading your status updates etc. On another note, never mention anything controversial about your work, colleagues or bosses in social sites as it is detrimental to your career.

Dear Martha,

I am a 1st year engineering student and have been failing miserably because I do not have any interest in this field. My parents forced me into it but my passion lies with Hotel Management studies! How do I make them realize that I am not cut out to become an engineer?

Dear Stan,

It is too bad that your parents have failed to realize your interests. You should perhaps have a heart to heart conversation with them and explain that you have been performing so poorly and I am sure they do not want you to suffer this failure. Alternatively, try getting them to come to your college and sit down with an educational counselor. It may help them to be more open-minded to what you are interested in.
