LATE 70S – 80S
During these decades there was a huge trend in slasher films after John Carpenter’s Halloween, towards the mid 80s this trend became tiring due to it’s many clichés and so it became less popular/ profitable.Halloween 1978Friday the 13th 1980
2nd WAVE
90S
After the release of Wes Raven’s Scream in 1996, teen horror or teen slashers came back into the cinema’s and as Scream was so successful other directors started to create similar films such as..I Know What You Did Last Summer 1997
3rd WAVE
LATE 90S
Writers started to include more scare factors in their films as opposed to gore. There was an increase in ghost horrorThe Sixth Sense 1999The Blair Witch Project 1999
4 th WAVE
MID 00S
There was a huge increase in torture and violent movies created to shock the audience, these contain sadistic violence.Saw 2004Hostel 2005
5th WAVE

At the start of the century, along with the gore/ violent films there were a lot of Asian horror remakes with the same type of image throughout. Ringu 1998 = the Ring 2002Ju-on 2002 = the Grudge 2004A Tale of Two Sisters 2003 = the Uninvited 2009
6th WAVE
NOWNowadays there has been a return to more atmospheric, ominous horror films and ghost films.
