Die sommerliche Festivalsaison neigt sich ihrem Ende zu, ab 28. September gibt es für Musik-Aficionados jedoch einen weiteren Fixtermin: das neue Club- und Showcase-Festival Waves Vienna. Das ganz spezielle Festivalgefühl lässt sich nämlich nicht nur auf ländlichen grünen Wiesen, sondern auch in den spannends-ten Venues der Stadt aufspüren. Mit einem Ticket auf Entdeckungsreise durch die Wiener Clubszene gehen, etablierte KünstlerInnen in neuem Rahmen auf sich wirken lassen, gehypte Acts erstmals live erleben und noch völlig unbekannte Musikperlen auskundschaften – dafür steht Waves Vienna. Darüber hinaus gibt’s die Möglichkeit, sich im Rahmen von musikbezogenen Workshops neues Wissen anzueignen, etwa zum Thema „DIY-Tools“. Und bei der Waves Vienna Conference kann man sich Inputs, Erkenntnisse und Kontakte für die Arbeit in der Musik-branche holen. In diesem Sinne: Ahoi beim Waves Vienna! This summer’s festival season is coming to an end but for music aficionados there is another must-at-tend event laying ahead, starting on September 28th: the new club and showcase festival Waves Vienna. Because the special festival feeling can not only be found on rurally green meadows, but also at the most exciting venues of the city. Going on a journey of discovery through Vienna’s club scene with only one ticket, taking in established artists in a new surrounding, seeing hyped acts live for the first time, and discovering totally unknown music treasures – that is what Waves Vien-na stands for. On top of that, there is the possibility to acquire new knowledge in the course of music-related workshops, for instance on the subject of “DIY tools”. inFormationWaves Vienna versteht sich als Showcase-Festival – das heißt, es geht darum, neue Bands zu entdecken, solche, die sich mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient haben, die über internationales Format verfügen, aber aus dem einen oder anderen Grund noch nicht nach ganz oben gespült worden sind. Trotz einiger bekannter und gefeierter Bands im Line-up heißt es bei mehr�als�90�Acts stets auch: sich von Club zu Club treiben lassen, hie und da in die verschiedenen Musikbiotope reinschnuppern. Das Festivalticket bietet dabei die Möglichkeit, ein äußerst dichtes, internationales Programm in sehr kurzer Zeit kennenzuler-nen. Waves Vienna regards itself as a showcase�festival – hence, it is all about discovering new bands of international format which deserve more attention, but, for some reason or other, have not yet managed to get to the top. Despite a number of well known and acclaimed bands in the line-up, the more�than�90�acts demand of the audience to let itself drift from club to club and to dip into the various musical biotopes. The festival ticket offers the possibility to check out an extremely dense international programme in a very short period of time.

Wenn man sich über die Entwicklung des zweiten Wiener Gemeindebezirks unterhält, muss das Fluc als eines der wichtigsten Zugpferde erwähnt werden. Anfangs in einer alten Kantine untergebracht, wurde schließlich eine Fußgänger-unterführung zur Fluc Wanne umgebaut, über der junge ArchitektInnen das Fluc Café errichteten. Der nahe dem Prater gelegene Club war maßgeblich daran beteiligt, die Gegend für junge Leute attraktiver zu machen. When talking about the progress of Vienna’s 2nd district, the Fluc is one of the main forces which needs to be mentioned. Initially located in an old canteen, a former pedestrian subway was transformed into the Fluc Wanne and young architects created the Fluc Café above it. Located near the amusement park Prater, the club helped to make the area more interesting for young people.

Die perfekte Pop-Welle

Es gibt leichtere Übungen, als aus dem Programm des Waves Vienna einzelne Highlights herauszuheben. Nicht weniger als 80 Acts treten innerhalb von fünf Tagen auf, Hö-

hepunkte gibt es zuhauf. Der erste, ganz große wird gleich bei der Eröffnung im Stadtsaal präsentiert: Soap & Skin. Dahinter verbirgt sich die gerade einmal 21-jährige Steirerin Anja Franziska Plaschg. Bereits vor Jahren als Pop-Wunderkind abgefeiert, erfüllte sie mit erstem Album „Lovetune for Vacuum“ alle Erwartungen. Der sperrig-düstere Sound schaffte es neben Österreich auch in Deutschland in die Charts. Die „dunkle Prinzessin“, wie sie der Spiegel nannte, wurde zum Lieb- ling des Feuilletons. Ob ihrer zerbrechlich-morbiden Erotik wird Anja Plaschg gerne mit Nico verglichen. Mit der Titelrolle in dem Theaterstück „Nico – Sphinx aus Eis“ und dem Song „Janitor of Lu-nacy“ befeuert sie diese Assozia- tionen auch selbst. Aber keine Angst: Die Frau weiß, was sie tut, sie zieht die Fäden selbst, sie ist keine Marionette zynischer Producer.

LEGENDÄR: GANG OF FOURMit dem Stadtsaal als Location tanzt die Eröffnung aus der Reihe. Denn die Musik spielt beim Waves Vienna eigentlich am Donaukanal und in der Leopoldstadt. Neben dem Badeschiff, das als Festivalzentrum dient, sind das Flex, das Fluc und die Pratersauna die wichtigsten Spielorte. Der Sound reicht von Alternative über Rock zu Electronic und Clubmusik – und er ist generationenübergreifend. Zwar liegt der Schwerpunkt bei jungen, aktuellen Acts, wie etwa der in Russland geborenen und in den USA lebenden Zola Jesus, es ist aber auch Platz für eine der großen Post-Punk-Legenden. Die Gang of Four („To Hell With Poverty“) prägte mit ihrem Sound, der Funk und Punk zusammenbrachte, Legionen von Musikern. Flea von den Red Hot Chili Peppers nennt sie seinen wichtigsten Einfluss, und auch von REM-Frontmann Michael Stipe waren schon ähnliche Statements zu hören. Selbst wenn von der

ursprünglichen Besetzung nur mehr Sänger Jon King und Gitarrist Andy Gill dabei sind: Ihr aktuelles Album „Content“ klingt unverkennbar nach Gang of Four. Innovativ, wenn auch ein wenig obskur, war die Finanzierung: Einer limitierten Edition lagen nicht nur ein Bonustrack und ein Buch bei, sondern auch Flakons mit verdünntem Blut (!) der Bandmit-glieder.

EAST MEETS WESTDas Festivalthema „East Meets West“ vereint so unterschiedliche Acts wie die tschechi-sche Akkordeonistin und Sängerin Jana Vébrová oder Jacek Sienkiewicz, den erfolgreichs-ten Techno-Produzent Polens. Dazu passt auch die vielleicht auch schrägste Band des Waves Vienna Festivals: Krea-tiivmootor aus Estland. Das achtköpfige Ensemble mit seinen retro-avantgardistischen Klängen erinnert an verrückte Bands aus dem benachbarten Finnland. Für zusätzliche Verfremdungseffekte sorgt außerhalb ihrer Heimat meist auch der Gesang in Estnisch. Als ungefähre Richtung für alle, die noch nie etwas von Kreatiivmotoor gehört haben (und das sind wohl die meisten), sei gesagt: Wer Pere Ubu oder die Einstürzenden Neubauten mag, wird Kreatiivmotoor lieben.

HEIMSPIELZum Schluss noch eine Österreich-Empfehlung: Die steirische Gitarrenlärmcombo Killed By 9V Batteries und das kraftvolle Wiener Trio Black Shampoo präsentieren beim Waves Vienna ihre neuen Alben. „The Crux“ und „Whipped Cream“ heißen die brandneuen Tonträger. Das hat Claria Luzia schon im Frühjahr gemacht – und mit ihrem aktuellen Album „Fallen Into Places“ Kritiker und Fans begeistert. Ob der Live-Qualitäten von Frontfrau und Band dürfen wir wohl einen der großen Höhepunkte des Waves Vienna erwarten. ///

Wien hat viele schöne und sonnige Seiten und weit mehr als Morbidität und lebensmüde Flirts mit dem Tod höchstpersönlich zu bieten – ohne diese Aspekte wäre Aber das Leben lebt jedoch nicht vorstellbar. Seit 1999 bringt die Band regelmäßig neue Alben heraus und damit noch mehr Schatten in die dunklen Seiten des Lebens. Dem Bandnamen entsprechend wartet die Hoffnung irgendwo hinter dem Horizont. „New Musketeers“ schlug zuletzt fast schon versöhnliche Töne an. A punch in the guts. That’s exactly what the first album of Aber das Leben lebt was. Vienna has many nice and sunny sides and definitely much more to offer than morbidity and a world-weary flirt with Death himself – however, without these aspects, Aber das Leben lebt would not be what they are. Since 1999, the band has been releasing new albums on a regular basis and, hence, continuously brings more and more shadow to the dark sides of life. Corresponding to the band name (which translates as “But life lives”), hope is waiting somewhere beyond the horizon. Recently, “New Musketeers” struck an almost conciliatory note.

Darren Cunningham aka Actress war einer der ersten großen Dubstep-Acts, dessen Musik weit aus den klassischen Genre-Ästhetiken ausscherte. Sein Debüt „Splazsh“ verschaffte ihm zahlreiche Artikel und Lobbekundungen. Das große deutsche Techno-Magazin Groove titelte sogar mit einer mehrsei-tigen Actress-Story. Cunninghams runtergekochter Dubstep besticht durch Elemente aus Micro-House, Rave-Breaks, Hip-Hop und Dub-Techno. Überdies ist Cunningham auch Label-Manager von Werk Discs und hat eine entschei-dende Rolle dabei gespielt, umjubelte Alben von Acts wie Lukid oder Zomby zu veröffentlichen. Darren Cunningham aka Actress was one of the first great dubstep acts whose music stepped out of line of the genre’s classic aesthetics. His debut “Splazsh” got him numerous articles and much praise. The big Ger-man techno magazine Groove even featured the artist in a several pages long cover story. His reduced dubstep captivates with elements from microhouse, rave breaks, hip hop, and dub techno. Adas „Blondie“ war eine Offenbarung, als es 2004 in die Läden kam. Da traute sich jemand, aus dem engen Korsett von Techno auszubrechen, Ada mischte luftige Melodien zwischen forsche Beats, lockerte diese mit Stimmbrocken und Songstrukturen auf; es zirpte und rumpelte wie in einem elektronischen Klein-tierzoo. Dafür wurde sie international gefeiert. Auf „Meine zarten Pfoten“ (2011) hat sie diesen Ansatz konsequent weiterverfolgt. Noch mehr Stimme, Flöte, weiche Melodien, sommerliche Wärme, mit gerade richtig viel Understatement und zurückhaltender Eleganz gemischt. Ada bringt Pop und Techno zusammen – dafür dankt ihr ausnahmslos jeder. When Ada’s “Blondie” was released in 2004, it was a revelation. Here was someone who dared to break out from the tight corset of techno. Ada mixed light melodies between brisk beats, loosened them up with pieces of vocals and song structures; it chirped and rumbled like an electronic petting zoo. And she was internationally celebrated for it. On “Meine zarten Pfoten” (2011), she consequently pursued this approach. Even more vocals, flutes, soft melodies, summery warmth, mixed with the right amount of understatement and reserved elegance. Ada makes techno meet pop – and everyone is thankful for that.

Agent Cooper ist eine dreiköpfige Band aus Wien. Ihren eindringlich-sphärischen Pop-Entwurf kombinieren Magali, Mélisande und Ursula mit Electro- und Hip-Hop-Beats – versetzt mit eigentümlichen Effekten. Der reduzierte Einsatz von Bass und Synthesizer öffnet den mächtigen wie auch lieblichen Vocals einen beson-deren Weg hin zum Publikum. Der Sound von Agent Cooper wandelt durch ein düsteres Tal, das dann und wann von einem Meer aus gleißendem Licht geflutet wird. Diese Band ist mehr als bloß der Wiener Beitrag zum Witch-House-Hype. Agent Cooper is a three-piece from Vienna. Magali, Mélisande and Ursula combine an emphatic and spheric draft of pop music with electro and hip hop beats – mixed with odd effects. The reduced use of bass and synthesizer opens up a special path to the audience for the powerful as well as charming vocals. The sound of Agent Cooper walks a gloomy valley which, every now and then, is being flooded by a sea of blazing light. This band is more than just the Viennese contribution to the witch house hype.

A Life, A Song, A Cigarette (kurz: ALASAC) sind fünf junge Wiener mit einer Vorliebe für Indie-Pop mit Folk/Country-Einschlag, die gerne mit den Bright Eyes verglichen werden. Allen Alexis, das sind der Wiener Musiker Günther Bernhart und der Salzburger DJ und Produzent Philip Preuss. Als die beiden die Formation im Jahre 2009 gründeten, landeten sie gleich mit ihrem ersten Track „Here Tonight“ in den FM4-Charts und auf der sendereigenen Compilation-Reihe „Soundselection“. Gemeinsam mit Gerald Peklar arbeiten Bernhart und Preuss zur Zeit an der Fertigstellung ihres Debütalbums, einer Sammlung elektronischer Popsongs – geprägt von eingängigen Melodien, einer unverkennbaren Stimme und ausreichend Bass –, die irgendwo zwischen Club und Wohnzimmer zuhause sind. The British Laurie Osborne aka Appleblim is considered to be one of the main protagonists with regard to the triumphal march of dubstep. Together with Shackleton he founded the renowned label Skull Disco. Mit ihrer Band The Red Clay Halo begibt sich die gebürtige Australierin auf die Suche nach kleinen Folk-Pop-Perlen, die zwischen Bretterbodentanz und Zerbrech-lichkeit oszillieren. Norbert Wally, Albrecht Klinger und Karlheinz Miklin kennen einander bereits eine gefühlte Ewigkeit. Getroffen haben sich die Drei im Graz der späten 80er-Jahre, seitdem gehen sie gemeinsame musikalische Wege. Dementsprechend können sie als The Base auf einen beeindruckende Diskografie verweisen. Deren neuester Eintrag: das Studioalbum „Tested Under Extreme Conditions“ (2011). The Base sind Experten für melancholische, schattseitige, borstige Rockmusik. Für ihre Platten und live spielen sie am liebsten auf alten Second-Hand-Instru-menten. Und das hört man in jedem Ton. Norbert Wally, Albrecht Klinger, and Karlheinz Miklin have known each other for what seems like an eternity. The trio met in Graz in the late 80s and is since making music together. Accordingly, The Base have an impressive discography to offer. Its most recent entry: the studio album “Tested Under Extreme Conditions” (2011). Eine Schülerband, wie es sie hierzulande öfter geben sollte: Die Beth Edges fanden sich am Linzer BORG für Popular- und Computermusik. Mit der „Pop-Matura“ in den Taschen, zog es den Vierer nach Wien, um während der Studien- zeit zu schauen, wie weit die Sache mit der Band gehen kann. Die gute alte Ins-piration durch eine Musik, die als so endlos geil empfunden wird, dass man sich selbst daran versuchen muss (hier: The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party), hat auch den eingängigen Indie-Rock der Beth Edges angetrieben – ohne dass die Band dabei vergessen würde, dass es immer noch mehr zu lernen gibt. A type of school band that is hard to find in this country: The Beth Edges met at a grammar school for popular and computer music in Linz. After completing their “pop A-levels”, the four band members moved to Vienna in order to see what they might be able to accomplish as a band alongside their university studies. Inspired by music they love so much (The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party) they just had to give it a try themselves and developed their catchy indie sound – without forgetting that there is still more to learn.

Live hat die Band bereits mit ihrem Debüt überzeugt und ihre Explosivität auf Tourneen durch Deutschland und die Schweiz noch verfeinert. The curtain raises for ambiguity, wordplays, and stories that make you think. Bilderbuch are back and they bring along their second album “Die Pest im Piemont”. The indie rockers, declared lovers of art and skinny jeans, cause a stir with their cryptic lyrics. Still, the band from Upper Austria always keeps in mind that music does not want to be made for thinking only, but also for listening. Check for sing-along potential passed without a problem. „Sexy, gefährlich und mitreißend“, urteilte die Stadtzeitung Falter über „Curious Kid“, die Ende 2010 erschienene Debüt-EP des jungen Wiener Trios. Aber auch andere hatten Black Shampoo ob dieses ersten Lebenszeichens auf der Rechnung – GoTV etwa. Der österreichische Musik-TV-Sender hievte die Band als einzigen heimischen Act in seine Liste der „Top 13 Newcomer für 2011“. Dabei überzeugen Black Shampoo nicht nur auf Tonträger: Live entfalten die unheilschwangere Atmo- sphäre und die urwüchsige Kraft ihres an großen Rock-’n’-Roll-Archetypen orien-tierten Sounds noch unmittelbarer ihre Wirkung. Im Rahmen des Festivals wird die Band ihr Debütalbum „Whipped Cream“ präsentieren. “Sexy, dangerous, and thril-ling”, that is the judgment the weekly newspaper Falter passed on “Curious Kid”, the debut EP of the young Viennese trio released in late 2010. But others, too, took notice of Black Shampoo’s first sign of life – GoTV, for instance. The Austrian music TV channel placed the band on its “Top 13 newcomers for 2011”-list – as the only Austrian act. But Black Shampoo do not only convince the listener on record: live, their doom-laden atmosphere and the elemental power of their sound inspired by great rock ’n’ roll archetypes develop an even more immediate impact. Besonders, wenn man Pop macht, so wie British Sea Power. Das Sextett knüpft erfolgreich an eine große britische Songwriting-Tradition an: Den Doves, den Manic Street Preachers oder Glasvegas stehen sie nur um wenig in Bekanntheit nach. Ihre Arrangements und Stimmungen sind fein gezeichnet, ihre Hits sowieso Kracher, ihre Live-Performances legendär. Kein Wunder, dass auch David Bowie, David Letterman und die Strokes Fans sind. The Mercury Prize is not a trifle. In the UK, the annual award by experts of the music industry is a really big thing; and merely being nominated is like a knightly accolade. Especially, if you are making pop music, like British Sea Power. Die Linzerin Cherry Sunkist hat sich seit ihrem Debüt 2006 auf der Compilation „Girl Monster“ über ihre ehemals übergroßen Vorbilder Chicks On Speed deutlich hinausentwickelt. Es sind atmosphärisch dichte, meistens synthetische, manchmal klaustrophobische, aber immer behutsam gewobene Tracks, die auf ihrem zweiten Album „Projection Screens“ auf den Hörer lauern. Nur selten steuern diese Songs auf erlösende Refrains zu, eher sind sie wie vertonte Kurzfilme, die die Dissonan-zen der Gegenwart mit Störgeräuschen, kühlen Laptop-Sounds, etwas Weilheim-Elektronik (à la The Notwist oder Lali Puna) und aufgebrochenen Beats abbilden und zurückwerfen. Since her debut in 2006 on the compilation “Girl Monster”, the Linz native Cherry Sunkist has clearly made a development that goes beyond her formerly gigantic role models Chicks On Speed. Clara Luzia bildet die Speerspitze des Wiener Songwriting-Wunders. Eigentlich hat die Sängerin einen feministischen Background, doch schafft sie es diese nach wie vor aktuellen Anliegen in ganz allgemeingültige Texte zu gießen. Ihre Alben sind häufig melancholisch, dabei aber weder trübsinnig noch hoffnungs-los. Ihre Songs sind wie für jene Momente in einem Film geschaffen, in denen die Akteure an einem Scheideweg stehen, sie geben Raum für Reflexion, für ein Innehalten; und genau das soll Kunst ja tun. Musik wie eine aufregend arrangier-te, lehrreiche Katharsis. Clara Luzia is the spearhead of the Viennese song-writing miracle. Actually, the singer has a feminist background, but she manages to transform these still relevant matters into universally valid texts. Her albums are often melancholic, but neither gloomy, nor hopeless. It is as if her songs were just made for those moments in a movie when the protagonists are standing at a crossroads: they give room for reflection, for a pause; and exactly that is what art is supposed to do. Music like an excitingly arranged, instructive catharsis.

Die Liebe zur Musik liegt Andreas Meid alias D.I.M. in den Genen. Schon sein Vater war Bassist und Produzent. Als der ihm einen Drumcomputer schenk-te, war klar: Die elektronische Musik ist Andreas Meids Zukunft. Mit Kumpel Alexander Ridha, auch bekannt als Boys Noize, gründete er das Duo Kid Alex. Ihr Song „Young Love“ wurde ein Riesenhit. Heute produzieren die beiden nur noch gelegentlich gemeinsam Musik, dafür geht D.I.M. verstärkt eigene Wege. Diese sind mit Hardcore-Electro gepflastert und führen ihn und seine Musik – sie erscheint bei Boys Noize Records und Turbo Recordings – um die ganze Welt. The love for music lies in Andreas Meid’s alias D.I.M.’s genes. His father had already been a bass player and producer. When he got his son a drum computer it became clear: electronic music would be Andreas Meid’s future. With his pal Alexander Ridha, also known as Boys Noize, he founded the duo Kid Alex. Their song “Young Love” was a huge hit. Today, only occasionally do the two produce music together. Instead, D.I.M. rather goes his own way. Wenn Destroy, Munich auf der Bühne stehen, kann es schon einmal voll werden. Die Wiener Band ist als Kollektiv angelegt und im Normalfall mindestens zu siebt. Genug Manpower, um eine überzeugende Verbindung von Indie-Rock, Pop und ungewöhnlichen Elementen wie Glockenspiel oder Geige zu schaffen. Da das Ganze auch noch mit der richtigen Menge an jugendlicher Freude und mangelnder Ernsthaftigkeit rübergebracht wird, muss man diese Band einfach lieben. When Destroy, Munich are standing on stage, it can get rather crowded. The Viennese band is conceived as a collective and usually performs as a group of seven, at the least. That’s enough manpower to create a convincing combi-nation of indie rock, pop, and unusual elements such as carillon and violin. And since they get their music across with the right amount of juvenile joy and a lack of seriousness, one simply has to love this band.

Auftritte bei den Festivals in Leeds und Reading, NME-Interviews, ein Feature auf Channel 4 und ständiges Touren durch Europa … Das mag für viele schon nach Karrierehöhepunkt klingen, doch Dry The River haben noch nicht einmal ein Album veröffentlicht. Mit erst einer EP und zwei Singles sind ihre hymni-schen Songs dennoch eines der großen Versprechen für den Herbst 2011. Sie spielen Folk-Songs wie eine Hardcore-Band. Das Ergebnis klingt entsprechend intensiv, und dabei gleichzeitig natürlich, raffiniert und eingängig. Hier werden große Gefühle trocken gelegt. Peformances at the festivals in Leeds and Reading, NME interviews, a feature on Channel 4, and constant touring through Europe … To some, that might sound like the highlight of one’s career, but Dry The River have not even released an album. Die Euphorie, die ein vor roher Kraft strotzender Rocksong auslösen kann, war lange Zeit Antriebskraft für die Musik dieser Band. Mit dem dritten Album „Bruiser“ scheint es nun an der Zeit zu sein, anmutigere, raffiniertere Songs zu ihrem Recht kommen zu lassen. Dass schick und schäbig dabei eine zwingende Liaison eingehen, ist wohl Frontfrau Liela Moss geschuldet. Die (immer noch) dröhnenden Gitarren werden von ihrer rauchig-heiseren Stimme beeindruckend im Zaum gehalten. Auch Alexander McQueen dürfte es gefallen haben: Er ließ sich 2009 von Moss für eine Kollektion inspirieren. The euphoria which a rock song full of raw power can trigger has been the driving force for the music of this band for a long time. It seems that with the third album “Bruiser” it is now time to give a chance to more graceful and refined songs. It is probably due to front woman Liela Moss that smart and shabby enter into a mandatory liaison. The (still) roaring guitars are being curbed by her husky voice. Über EMA wird enorm viel gebloggt. Anfang Mai 2011 war sie weltweit sogar eines der Topthemen. Dementsprechend haben Schwergewichte wie NME, The Guardian und Pitchfork EMAs Debüt allesamt in euphorischen Kritiken gefeiert. Alle reden vom 90er-Revival – EMA zieht es durch. Vergleiche mit Tori Amos, Cat Power oder den Breeders ließen da nicht lange auf sich warten. EMAs Album bebt und dröhnt, bricht immer wieder aus und wird generell von einer magischen Unruhe getragen. Auch in leisen Passagen strotzt das Album vor roher Energie; und Ideen. Wie ein neuer Wind sind auch ihre Texte: ehrlich, direkt, entwaffnend und unprätentiös. Das Quintett aus Wien hat gerade einmal eine EP veröffentlicht und gilt schon als Geheimtipp. Ihre Songs sind klassischem Indie-Rock mit Folk-Elementen verpflichtet. Die Stadtzeitung Falter und der Radiosender FM4 sind auf die noch junge Band aufmerksam geworden, die neben dem klassischen Rock-Instrumentarium auch Violine, Organetta und natürlich allerlei Percussion zum Einsatz bringt. Im Studio werden sie tatkräftig von Deckchair-Orange-Mastermind Alex Wieser unterstützt. The quintet from Vienna has released just one EP but is already perceived as an insider’s tip. Their songs employ classic indie rock and folk elements. The Viennese weekly Falter and the radio station FM4 have noticed the still young band which, apart from classic rock instruments, also uses violins, organettas, and, of course, all kinds of percussion. Auf der Bühne sind Etepetete ein Orkan, der auch den letzten Zweifler auf der Tanzfläche ordentlich durchrüttelt. Die Sets des All-Girl-DJ- und VJ-Kollektivs bewegen sich unberechenbar, aber stets mit viel Bass und Liebe, von Electro-Clash, Techno, Fidget oder Booty-Bass bis hin zum Nuest Rave. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit entwickelten sich Etepetete vom regional beliebten zum international auftretenden Electronic-Act. Aktuell arbeiten Etepetete an eigener Musik. Ein erster Track ist auf einer Compilation des Mode-Labels Diesel im Rahmen des Grazer Springfestivals 2011 erschienen. On stage, Etepetete are like a hurricane which manages to jolt even the last sceptic on the dance floor. The sets of the all-girl DJ and VJ collective are unpredictable, but always oscillate between electro clash, techno, fidget, booty bass as well as nuest rave, and are fuelled with lots of bass and love. Within a very short period of time, Etepetete developed from a regionally popular to an internationally performing electronic act. Currently, Etepetete are working on their own music. Willkommen im Märchenland! Hier entern Die Eternias in Peter-Pan’scher Haute Couture die Stage und nageln mit ihren Gitarrenriffs den Rock ’n’ Roll an die Wand. Die Geschichten, die Sänger Tagedieb erzählt, haben aber kein „Es war einmal …“ als Ausgangspunkt, sondern handeln von der harten Realität zwischen gescheiterten Existenzen und dem Dasein als fabelhafter Charakter auf der Guckkastenbühne des Indie-Rock. Im österreichischen Independent-Nest von Seayou Records geschlüpft, werden Die Eternias mit großem Theater flügge und zeigen, wie leicht es gehen kann, dass Publikum zu entführen. Mal feinfühliger, mal zart-überschwänglicher Indie-Rock aus der europäischen Kulturhauptstadt Tallinn. Schon früh gelang es Ewert And The Two Dragons, sich mit ihren intimen wie emotionalen Konzerten in die Herzen des Publikums zu spielen. Ihr Debütalbum „The Hills Behind The Hills” (2009) wurde innerhalb von nur drei Tagen im Ferienhaus von Ewerts Schwiegereltern aufgenommen. Nach diversen Auftritten bei renommierten Festivals unterzeichnete die Band beim lettischen Label I Love You Records. Dort erschien vor Kurzem mit „Good Man Down“ auch ihr zweites Album. At times sensitive, at others slightly ebullient indie rock from the European cultural capital Tallinn. Right from the beginning, Ewert And The Two Dragons have managed to play themselves into the hearts of the audience with their intimate and emotional concerts. Die Band wurde Mitte der 90er-Jahre gegründet und Mitte der Nullerjahre auch außerhalb von Dänemark erfolgreich – inklusive Tourneen durch Europa und die USA und einer Award-Nominierung bei der Canadian Music Week. Die Unterstützung von Post-Punk-Größen wie The Cure oder New Order haben die Band vor allem ihrer Tour-Leidenschaft zu verdanken, die die Griechen immerhin bis hinauf ins ferne Dänemark geführt hat. Sängerin Eleni Tzavara aka Etten trägt mit sanfter, aber intensiver Stimme durch die Songs. Der Sound der Band ist stets unterhaltsam, wenn auch mit einem ungewöhnlichen Einschlag versehen, der ihrer Musik eine markante Note gibt. Ian Fisher ist nicht bloß irgendein „junger Mann mit Gitarre“. Er ist der Inbegriff dieses Musikertypus. Seine nachdenklichen Songs erzählen aus dem Leben der Menschen des mittleren Westens der USA, von gesellschaftlichen und politischen Missständen. Aufgewachsen in Missouri, in der Nähe des Mississippi, beschreibt Fisher in seinen Beobachtungen auch die eigene Geschichte. Es ist dieser persön-liche Bezug, der der melancholischen, aber immer voller Hingabe vorgetragenen Musik ihre Seele verleiht. Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture und LCD Soundsystem gäbe es ohne Gang Of Four nicht. Keine Band, die vor 20 Jahren kaum noch bekannt war, wurde in den letzten Jahren so oft als wichtiger Einfluss genannt wie dieses englische Post-Punk-Quartett. Im sonischen Kampf gegen die Kollateralschäden der Globalisierung und gegen die Einschränkung von Bürgerrechten landeten in den Nullerjahren viele beim schroffen Funk ihres Debüts „Entertainment!“ (1979). Zuletzt veröffentlichte die Band mit „Content“ (2011) abermals ein beachtli-ches Album. Gang Of Four sind lebende Legenden, die politische Slogans so erschütternd und dabei cool servieren wie sonst niemand. Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, and LCD Soundsystem would not exist without Gang Of Four. No band which was barely known 20 years ago has as frequently been named as an important influence as this English post-punk quartet. Ken Hayakawa wurde 1982 in Salzburg geboren. Bereits mit sechs Jahren begann er Klavier zu spielen, die Karriere als Konzertpianist blieb unvollendet, aber einige Jahre und eine Tontechniker-Ausbildung später, konnte sich Ken Haya-kawa diese Fähigkeiten wieder zunutze machen. In Wien gelandet, avancierte er innerhalb kürzester Zeit zu einem der wichtigsten Techno-DJs der Stadt und produzierte bald darauf verspielte und hochmusikalische elektronische Musik, die auf renommierten Labels wie DJ Hells Gigolo Records oder Kollektiv Turmstrasses Musik gewinnt Freunde veröffentlicht wurde. Erst kürzlich landete er einen FM4- Chart-Hit mit seinem Track „Wien bei Nacht“. Ken Hayakawa was born in Salz-burg in 1982. At the age of six he began to play the piano; the career as a concert pianist has never been pursued, but a few years later, after completing a training to become a sound engineer, Ken Hayakawa can again make use of his musical skills. Fuck Buttons sind live ein absolutes Erlebnis. Abstrakte Texturen schrauben sich immer tiefer in metallische Beats hinein – und damit ins Bewusstsein. Die Tracks des britischen Duos werden über mehrere Minuten immer noch eine Stufe inten-siver, verdammt laut sind sie sowieso. Die DJ-Sets von Andrew Hung funktionie-ren ganz ähnlich, sind höchst tanzbar, dabei aber mit avantgardistischem Lärm und industriellen Texturen angereichert. So kommen Kopf, Herz, Beine und der Arsch gleichermaßen auf ihre Kosten. Dance to the underground! When perfor-ming live, Fuck Buttons are the ultimate experience. Abstract textures are drilled further and further into metallic beats – and into the mind. The tracks of the British duo continue to become increasingly intensive for several minutes; they are bloody loud in any case. Wären Instrumenti aus London, Stockholm oder auch Modena, würden sie schon längst hemmungslos gehypt werden. Ihr Debütalbum ist für Herbst versprochen, spätestens dann wird es auch ganz Europa erfahren: Instrumenti machen hochmusikalischen Pop, haben all die Gesten und großen Melodien, die es für das Radio und den iPod braucht, sind aber noch dazu konzep- tuell aufregend. Als Duo gegründet, haben sich Instrumenti mittlerweile um mehrere visuelle Künstler und Musiker erweitert, verkleiden sich, tanzen wie Michael Jackson, machen Dudelsack-Performances und dann wieder schlicht ganz großen Pop. If Instrumenti came from London, Stockholm, or Modena, they would already be hyped without restrain. When their debut album will be released in autumn, all of Europe will finally find out: Instrumenti create highly musical pop, have all the gestures and great melodies needed for the radio and iPod, and, in addition, are conceptually exciting. Jüngstes Beispiel: das englische Trio Is Tropical. Da werden nicht nur hymnische Mitsing-Refrains neuerdings mit einem dicken Stück Ananas und Strohschirmchen serviert, ihr Video zu „The Greeks“ ist noch dazu eine höchst unterhaltsame Kids-Splatter-Crime-Story, die Cartoon-Elemente mit echten Aufnahmen mischt und bereits über zwei Millionen Mal angesehen wurde. Kenton Slash Demon sind eines der vielversprechenden Elektronik-Duos aus Dänemark. Das im Rahmen des Festivals seine Veröffentlichung feiernde Al-bum „The Crux“ wurde von der Wiener Produzenten-Legende Patrick Pulsinger in ein zwielichtiges, kaputtes und schmutziges Licht gerückt. Und es kommt gerade rechtzeitig zum immer lauter werdenden 90er-Jahre-Revival. Wenn es ein Stück Gerechtigkeit gibt, werden Killed By 9V Batteries morgen so bekannt sein wie Girls, Smith Westerns, Yuck – oder gar Sebadoh. This band from sou-thern Austria spits out new songs like a volcano. More than 200 pieces of raw, noisy lumps of rock music have been written since the band formed in 2005. The album “The Crux” will be presented at the festival for the first time. It was the Viennese producer legend Patrick Pulsinger who put a shady, broken, and dirty spin on the record. “The Crux” is arriving just in time for the ever louder 90s revival. If there is justice in the world, tomorrow, Killed By 9V Batteries will be as famous as Girls, Smith Westerns, Yuck – or even Sebadoh.

Man fühlt sich an die großen, weirden Dada-Bands aus Finnland erinnert, wenn Kreatiivmootor aus dem ein paar Kilometer davon entfernt liegenden Estland ihre Sound-Kolben anlaufen lassen. Spricht man noch dazu kein Estnisch, dann sorgen die retro-avantgardistischen und leicht neurotischen Improvisationen der Band umso mehr für herrliche Irritation. Und jeder, der auch nur ein klein wenig mit Pere Ubu, den Monks oder den Einstürzenden Neubauten anzufangen weiß, wird sich von diesen Esten mit Freude eine gehörige Portion antirationale Musikkunst einschenken lassen. One is reminded of the great, weird, Finnish Dada bands when Kreatiivmootor from the neighboring Estonia fire up their sound pistons. If, in addition, one does not speak Estonian, the band’s retro-avant-garde and somewhat neurotic improvisations become all the more of a wonderful irritation. Anyone who takes the slightest pleasure in the output of Pere Ubu, the Monks, or Einstürzende Neubauten will gladly let these Estonians serve them a proper portion of anti-rational musical art.

Norbert Kristof ist einer der begabtesten Singer-Songwriter Ungarns. In Budapest beheimatet, schreibt er seit mehr als zehn Jahren ergreifende Songs. Nach unzähligen Bandprojekten beschloss er, das von ihm komponierte Material gemeinsam mit einem alten Freund aufzunehmen. Im Winter 2010 ging daraus schließlich die Veröffentlichung „Greatest (Never Been) Hits“ hervor. Epischer Folk-Post-Rock aus Polen? Klingt nicht unbedingt so, als wäre das etwas, worauf die Welt gewartet hat. Muss auch nicht sein – nicht jedes Album ist dafür gemacht, um die ganze Welt damit zu betouren. Aber Kyst demonstrieren die Vielfalt, die Bandbreite und die hohe Qualität aktueller, moderner Musik aus Polen. Und sie stehen dabei Bands wie Explosions In The Sky, Tortoise oder Animal Col- lective um nichts nach; außer vielleicht, dass sie diese Art von Musik nicht erfunden haben. Sonst aber passt von den Bandfotos angefangen bis hin zur Produktion, der musikalischen Präzision, dem Tumblr-Blog und der immer hochmelodiösen Experimentierfreunde alles zusammen. Epic folk-post-rock from Poland? Doesn’t necessarily sound like something the world has been waiting for. And it doesn’t have to – not every album was made to tour the whole world with. But Kyst de-monstrate the diversity, the range, and the high quality of contemporary, modern music from Poland. And they can definitely keep up with bands such as Explosions In The Sky, Tortoise, or Animal Collective – apart from the fact that they did not invent this kind of music. Other than that, everything else fits together nicely: from the band photos to the production, from the musical precision to the Tumblr blog and the always highly tuneful enthusiasm for experimentation.

Leitstrahl pflegen eine fast hoffnungslose Liebe zur Zukunft. Zur Zukunft aus der Perspektive der 80er-Jahre! Arpeggio-Synths, Umhängekeyboards, Neon-licht, schnalzende Snare-Drums, und Schweißbänder gehören zur Grundaus-stattung von Leitstrahl. Ja, so hat die Zukunft damals geklungen. Zum Glück ist diese Art von Musik nach einem ganzen Jahrzehnt des Wiederaufkochens in Fleisch und Blut aktueller Produktionen übergegangen. Die Wiener gaben stilecht bisher vor allem Musik aus fremder Feder den typischen, blitzenden Leitstrahl-Touch; unter anderem auch Klassik-Granddaddy Joseph Haydn. Leitstrahl maintain an almost hopeless love for the future. For the future from an 80s’ perspective, that is! Arpeggio synths, keytars, neon light, flicking snare drums, and sweatbands are part of the basic equipment of Leitstrahl. Yes, that’s what the future sounded like back then. Luckily, after a whole decade of repeatedly being warmed up, this type of music became ingrained into current productions. So far, the Viennese duo has mostly added the typical, flashing Leitstrahl-touch to other artists’ music; for instance to the music of classic-granddaddy Joseph Haydn.

Ursprünglich als Soloprojekt geplant, wurde die Band Likewise Anfang 2008 gegründet. Von Folk ausgehend, oszilliert das Quintett in einem musikalischen Gefüge zwischen Lagerfeuerromantik und Indie-Rock-Charme. Dass ein paar der Bandmitglieder miteinander verwandt sind, sorgt augenscheinlich für einen Wohlfühlfaktor, den auch das Publikum bei den Konzerten der Band zu spüren bekommt. Hier ist jemand mit Leidenschaft bei der Sache. Originally planned as a solo project, the band Likewise was founded at the beginning of 2008. Based on folk, the quintet oscillates in a musical nexus between campfire romanticism and indie rock charms. The fact that some of the band members are related to each other apparently provides a certain feel-good factor, which, at concerts, also infects the audience. This band is giving its all for the music.

In ihrer Wahlheimat Montreal arrangiert Laurel Sprengelmeyer ihre feenhafte Stimme, akustische Gitarren und Synth-Klangwelten zu aufregenden Odd-Pop- Songs – unter anderem mit Hilfe von kanadischen Kollegen wie den beiden Arcade-Fire-Mitgliedern Richard Reed Perry und Sarah Neufeldt, sowie Rebecca Foon (A Silver Mt. Zion) und Pat McGee (Stars). Little Screams erstes Album „The Golden Record“ erschien im Frühjahr diesen Jahres bei Secretly Canadian und eröffnet einen Blick in das extravagante Sound-Universum der Multiinstrumentalistin. In her adopted home Montreal, Laurel Sprengelmeyer arranges her fairylike voice, acoustic guitars, and synth sounds into exciting odd-pop songs – sometimes with the help of Canadian colleagues such as the two Arcade Fire members Richard Reed Parry and Sarah Neufeldt, as well as Rebecca Foon (A Silver Mt. Zion) and Pat McGee (Stars). Little Scream’s first album “The Golden Record” was released on the label Secretly Canadian in spring this year and represents an insight into the extravagant sound universe of the multi-instrumentalist.

Longital mischen Elektronik, Gitarre, Stimme und Bass. So weit, so gewöhnlich. Aber es ist der elektronische Teil – im Wesentlichen ein Jazzmutant Lemur –, der daraus etwas Besonderes macht. Denn die Art, wie sie ihr heimliches drittes Bandmitglied einsetzen – behutsam und immer im Dienste des Songs –, hat aus Longital einen der wichtigsten Acts der slowakischen Indie-Szene gemacht; Dazu trägt auch bei, dass das Duo mit Slnko Records eines der bekanntesten Indie-Labels ihres Heimatlandes betreibt. Bei FM4, einem der erfolgreichsten Jugendradiosender Europas, war ihr Album „Let The Light In“ Album der Woche. Zu Recht: Pulsierende, repetitive Rhythmen und schleppender Sprechgesang bauen einen fast psychedelisch-krautrockigen Sog auf, der sich mitunter an den Überhelden Sonic Youth, ein wenig Pavement oder auch Les Savy Fav orientiert. Das alles mit konsequen-tem Druck, mit lauten Gitarren und vollem Sound. Gelegentliche Überraschun-gen, wie etwa Saxophon-Sequenzen und subtil eingesetzte elektronische Elemente zeigen, dass M185 eben nicht bloß eine weitere Rockband sind. FM4, one of the most successful youth radio stations in Europe, presented their album “Let The Light In“ as their album of the week. With good reason: vibrant, repetitive rhythms and drawn-out Sprechgesang build up to an almost psychedelic, krautrock pull, which draws on über-heroes like Sonic Youth, Pavement, or Les Savy Fav. And the band does this with consequent pressure, loud guitars, and a rich sound. The occasional surprises such as saxophone sequences and subtly employed electronic elements show that M185 are not just another rock band.

Anna Attar aka Monsterheart machte bereits vor Jahren als Frontfrau des über-aus erfolgreichen Wiener Indie-Rock-meets-Freak-Folk-Kollektivs Go Die Big City von sich reden. Nach Auflösung der Band verlegte sie ihren Wohnsitz von Wien nach Berlin und startete ihr Soloprojekt Monsterheart. Hier trifft noisiger Indie-Pop auf kindliche, zuckrige Melodien und mal romantische, mal bittersüße Geschichten. Ihr Debüt erscheint 2011 beim renommierten österreichischen Indie-Label Seayou Records (Japanther, Thieves Like Us, Paper Bird etc.). Anna Attar aka Monsterheart already made herself known some years ago as the front woman of the rather successful Viennese indie-rock-meets-freak-folk-collective Go Die Big City. After the band split up, she moved from Vienna to Berlin and started her solo project Monsterheart. Here noisy indie pop meets childlike, sweet melodies and stories which are, at times, romantic, at others, bittersweet. Die in München stationierten DJs und Produzenten Mathias Modica (Munk) und Jonas Imbery (Telonius) sind sowohl solo als auch mit ihrem Label Gomma richtig gut im Geschäft. Gomma ist eine Institution, an der seit Langem schon kein DJ und Hörer vorbeikommt. Die britische Musikgazette NME erklärte das Label gar zum „deutschen Pendant von DFA“. Dem kann man nur beipflichten, denn ihre musikali-sche Sprache, die echte Instrumente, 70er-Disco, Psychedelic-Sounds, 90er-Tech-no, Electronica und Pop vermengt, ist ebenso zwingend wie genial. Im Rahmen des Festivals werden die beiden in einer Workshop-Reihe auch das neue Audiotool von Burn Studios präsentieren. The Munich-based DJs and producers Mathias Modica (Munk) and Jonas Imbery (Telonius) are well established in the music business – as solo artists as well as with their label Gomma. For quite some time now, there has been no getting around the institution Gomma for DJs and listeners. The British music magazine NME even proclaimed that the label is the “German pendant of DFA”. One simply has to agree with that, because their musical language, which mixes real instruments, 70s disco, psychedelic sounds, 90s techno, electronica, and pop, is just as compelling as it is brilliant. Frittenbude, K.I.Z. und Deichkind bekommen Konkurrenz. Denn auch wenn die Beats von Neodisco wie geliehen wirken, sind die Slogans und vorlauten Sprüche des Grazer Trios mindestens auf dem gleichen Level, mindestens so witzig, so schlau, so cool und so doppelbödig wie jene ihrer deutschen Kol-legen. Anna F, Eva Glawischnig und halb Österreich bekommen ihr Fett weg. Sie scheißen auf Eisbären und steigendes Wasser, solange im Bacardi noch Eis ist und wundern sich, warum sie „so viel anders sind“. Besinnungslose Party und Hirnnahrung – Neodisco bieten beides. Frittenbude, K.I.Z., and Deichkind get some competition. Because, although the Beats of Neodisco sound as if they were borrowed, the slogans and cheeky patter of the trio from Graz are at least on the same level, at least as funny, as clever, as cool, and as ambiguous as those of their German colleagues. Anna F, Eva Glawischnig, and half of Austria is made fun of. They don’t give a fuck about ice bears and the rising water levels as long as there are ice cubes in the Bacardi, and they are wondering why they are so very different. Party without restraint and brain food – Neodisco have both to offer.

Their tracks are like a particle accelerator which enriches small particles of dark sound matter with a few gigawatt hours of energy and then catapults them against the listeners’ eardrums. Petrol sind ein Psychedelic-Rock-Trio aus Belgrad. Und Petrol haben ein Stück Geschichte geschrieben: Als erste serbische Band gaben sie nach dem Krieg im kroatischen Knin ein Konzert. Seit 2003 halten Ana, Ilija und Milan als Petrol den Lo-Fi-Charme ihres analogen Equipments hoch und platzieren den serbischen Underground damit auch in den Charts: Ihre erste Single „Sve jedno je“ hielt sich für einige Wochen in den MTV Adria Charts, deren Nachfolger „Beirut“ wurde vom serbischen Radio B92 gar zur Single des Jahres 2008 gekürt. Erst kürzlich ließ er mit neuen Veröffentlichungen aufhorchen. Sein Sound driftet aktuell in Richtung Broken Beats und Dubstep ab. Photek is a living legend of electronic bass music. Sie sind Piloten, und du nicht. Oder so. Pilots kommen aus Wien und bewegen sich gekonnt im großen Kosmos Indie-Rock, irgendwo zwischen Bloc Party und Gang Of Four. Die Band hatte einige Umbesetzungen zu verkraften und ging damit durchaus vernünftig um: In einer Tabula-rasa-Aktion wurden im Juli 2011 alle frühen Songs als Remix-EP herausgebracht, um sich von alten Zöpfen zu trennen. Danach schrieben die vier Musiker in neuer Besetzung einfach neue Stücke. Passt. They are pilots and you are not. Or something like that. Pilots are from Vienna and skillfully move through the big indie rock universe, somewhere between Bloc Party and Gang Of Four. The band had to face a number of chan-ges in its line-up, but dealt with them quite reasonably: to get to some kind of tabula rasa, all early songs were released on a remix EP in July 2011; hence the band freed itself from old ballast. After that, the four musicians simply wrote new songs in the new line-up. Well done.

William Blake und Allen Ginsberg sind die Inspirationsquellen des slowakischen Quartetts. Man kann es bereits ahnen, ihre Songs sind dementsprechend episch und von kühler Dunkelheit durchsetzt. Dabei erschaffen die Plastic Swans aber durchaus tanzbaren Rock. Bands wie Interpol, die Editors oder die White Lies kommen einem in den Sinn – die Produktion und der Ideenreichtum sind dabei absolut auf Augenhöhe. Mal singen sie auf Slowakisch, mal auf Englisch. Ihr Netzauftritt ist ebenfalls recht mysteriös: Nur ihre Musik ist da zu finden, mitsamt geheimnisvoller Artworks und Songtexte. William Blake and Allen Ginsberg are sources of inspiration for this Slovakian quartet. As one can already guess from this fact, their songs are, correspondingly, epic and filled with a chilly darkness. Nevertheless, the Plastic Swans create quite danceable rock. Bands such as Interpol, Editors, or White Lies come to mind – but with regard to their produc-tion and inventiveness they are absolutely at eye level with those acts. At times they sing in Slovakian, at others in English. Their internet presence, too, is rather mysterious: one only finds their music, along with puzzling artworks and lyrics.

Pola-Riot haben die ganz großen Nu-Rave-Namen nach Wien gebracht. Für ihre Clubserie hatten sie fast unfehlbares Gespür gezeigt: Die Crookers, die Bloody Beetroots, Yuksek oder Fake Blood waren schon bei ihnen zu Gast – noch bevor sie große Hallen füllten. Doch dieses Duo schickt auch selbst zerstörerische Schallwellen in die Welt. Regelmäßig unterlegen sie eigene und anderer Leute Tracks mit röhrenden Bässen, zerbröselten Synths und hypnotischen Melodien. Etwa den House-Klassiker „Music Sounds Better With You“ von Stardust, und sie landeten damit sogar auf Platz eins beim Blog-Barometer The Hype Machine. Pola-Riot brought the really big nu rave names to Vienna. For their club series they have shown almost infallible intuition: the Crookers, The Bloody Beetroots, Yuksek, or Fake Blood have been guests – even before they filled large venues. But this duo also sends out destructive sound waves itself. On a regular basis, they underlay own and other people’s tracks with roaring basses, crumbling synths, and hypnotic melodies. Martin Kaltenbrunner ist Miterfinder des Reactables. Das Gerät wurde vom Magazin Rolling Stone als eines der innovativsten elektronischen Musik- instrumente der vergangenen Jahre bezeichnet. 2008 wurde Kaltenbrunner mit einer Goldenen Nica am Festival Ars Electronica ausgezeichnet. Sein Kollege Günther Gessert beschäftigt sich als Musiker seit den 90er-Jahren mit dem Theremin und gab europaweit Konzerte als Solist sowie in Ensembles – vom Duo bis zum Kammerorchester. Er entwickelt überdies eigene Sensor-Inter-faces zur Musik- und Performance-Steuerung. Ein spannendes Künstlerduo und eine geniale Instrumentenkombination. Martin Kaltenbrunner is co-inventor of the Reactable. Dieses dänische Duo zündet gerne Clubs an. Natürlich sprichwörtlich. Sie schalten die Verstärker hoch bis auf elf – und geben einem anschließend auf die Zwölf. Mit reichlich Verzerrer sind sie die legitimen Erben von Justice, Digitalism und MSTRKRFT. Denn obwohl ihre Mischung aus Rrrock und Electrrro nicht grundlegend neu ist, so sind doch ihr Songwriting, ihre Feierlaune und ihre Energie höchst ansteckend. Ganz ohne einen einzigen Release sind sie erstaun-licherweise schon quer durch Europa getourt und haben selbst China auf der Expo den Keim von Punk und Freiheit eingepflanzt. Weil sie Clubs anzünden, deswegen. This Danish duo likes to set clubs on fire. Figuratively, of course. They turn up their amps to eleven – and then they blow your head off. With a proper amount of distortion, they are the legitimate successors of Justice, Digitalism, and MSTRKRFT. Because, although their mix of rrrock and electrrro is nothing new in itself, their songwriting, party mood, and energy are nevertheless conta-gious. Without even one release, they have already been touring all of Europe and planted the seed of punk and freedom at the expo in China. Because they set clubs on fire, that’s why.

Resorts gehören zu einem ganzen Pulk an aussichtsreichen kanadischen Projekten. Das Duo aus dem schönen Vancouver besteht aus Sam Davidson und Edo Van Breemen, die beide auch Mitglieder der Band Brasstronaut sind. Ihr treibender, minimalistischer Sound-Teppich erinnert an den Berliner Berghain-Resident-DJ Nick Höppner und die norwegischen Space-Disco-Erneuerer Lindstrøm und Todd Terje. Punkto Releases legen Resorts Tempo vor: Im Juli veröffentlichten sie ihre erste EP, im September folgte eine zweite. Resorts are part of a pile of promising Canadian projects. Sam Davidson and Edo Van Breemen, who are also members of Brasstronaut, constitute the duo from beautiful Vancouver. Their pushing, minimalistic soundscapes evokes the music of Nick Hüppner, resident DJ at Berlin’s Berghain, and the Norwegian space disco revivalists Lind- strøm and Todd Terje. In terms of releases, Resorts set a high pace: In July they released their first EP, in September a second one followed.

Dieses Septett reist einmal rund um den Atlantik, von seiner Heimat Island aus zu britischem Prog-Rock, rein in die Italo-Disco, in den Senegal und nach Südafrika für reichlich polyrhythmische Strukturen, weiter in die brasilianischen Favelas, die Karibik und nach schwerem Südstaaten-Rock schließlich wieder heim nach Island. Ansteckender Disco-Prog-Heavy-Afro-Beat könnte man dazu sagen. Auf Fotos posieren Retro Stefson gerne mal in 100 Jahre alten Schwimmanzügen oder dicken Strickpullis; diese scheinbaren Widersprüche löst die Band aber mühelos in mitreißenden Songs auf. This septet travels around the globe: from their home in Iceland to British prog rock, into the Italo disco, to Senegal and South Africa for a good measure of polyrhythmic structures, heading further to Brazilian favelas, the Caribbean, and after heavy Southern States rock finally back home to Iceland. One could call it contagious disco-prog-heavy-afro-beat. On photos, Retro Stefson like to pose in one century old swimsuits or thick knitted jumpers; but apparent contradictions like these are effortlessly dissolved by the band’s thrilling songs.

„Solar“ heißt das zweite Album der Band und es wurde in einem brütend heißen Winter 2010 in Finnland aufgenommen. Während draußen das Polareis zu Wasserdampf kondensierte, verbarrikadierten sich Rubik im Haus der Kultur in Helsinki in einem finsteren Kino, das eigentlich für die Kommunistische Partei errichtet wurde. Entstanden ist ein mitreißendes Stück Indie-Pop mit reichlich Elektronik und leichtfüßigen Melodien, die passgenau schwüle, euphorische Hitze und eine mysteriöse Dunkelheit in sich vereinen. Ein heißkaltes Vergnü-gen mit Gänsehautfaktor. “Solar” is the title of the band’s second album which was recorded during the scorching hot winter 2010 in Finland. While, outside, the polar ice was condensing to water vapour, Rubik barricaded themselves in Helsinki’s House of Culture inside a dark cinema which was actually built for the Communist Party. What they created is a thrilling piece of indie pop with plenty of electronic elements and light-footed melodies which perfectly combine the muggy, euphoric heat with a mysterious darkness. A pleasure both hot and cold, with a guarantee for goose bumps.

Gute Dinge brauchen manchmal eine Weile. So wie „Exhale“ (2011), das Debüt- album von Tania Saedi. Die Wienerin mit persischen Wurzeln hat über viele Jahre Songs geschrieben und mit Markus Kienzl (Sofa Surfers) am richtigen Sound gebastelt. Es hat sich gelohnt. Saedis Stücke sind eine perfekt arrangierte, vielseitige Reise durch die elektronische Musik mit intensiven Percussion-Einsprengseln und Bläser-Akzenten. Zusammengehalten wird das ganze durch die vielseitige und wandelbare Stimme sowie die Präsenz der Künstlerin selbst. Sometimes, good things take their time. Just like “Exhale” (2011), the debut album of Tania Saedi. For many years, the Viennese artist with Persian roots wrote songs and worked on the right sound with Markus Kienzl (Sofa Surfers). It paid off. Saedi’s tracks are a perfectly arranged, versatile journey through electronic music with intensive bits and pieces of percussion and brass. Auch wenn Antwerpen eher für Diamanten und Mode bekannt ist, gibt es in der belgischen Stadt eine ganze Reihe großartiger Musiker. School Is Cool gehören definitiv dazu. Die Band wurde 2009 gegründet und bewegt sich seither irgendwo zwischen Freak-Folk, Pop und Indie-Hop. 2010 konnten die fünf jungen Belgier den nationalen Nachwuchswettbewerb Humo’s Rock Rally für sich entscheiden und es damit Größen wie Deus und Das Pop gleichtun. Man darf gespannt sein, wie es mit der Band weitergehen wird. Even though Antwerp is rather known for diamonds and fashion, there is quite a range of fantastic bands to be found in the Belgian city. School Is Cool are definitely one of them. They were founded in 2009 and since oscillate somewhere between freak folk, pop, and indie hop. In 2010, the five young Belgians won Humo’s Rock Rally, a national contest for up-and-coming musicians, following industry biggies such as Deus and Das Pop. Looking forward to how the band will be doing in the future.

Vom Textildesigner und Webergesellen über Comiczeichner hin zum DJ mag kein gewöhnlicher Lebenslauf sein, im Fall Heinz Seidenbuschs ergibt er aber Sinn. Der gebürtige Salzburger bewegt sich seit geraumer Zeit in Wien im Dunstkreis des Kollektivs Schönbrunner Techno und begeistert die Zuhörer immer wieder aufs Neue. Sein deeper und doch discolastiger Sound passt auf Tanzflächen genauso wie in Bars oder auf die Couch an einem Samstagnachmittag. Er verliert sich in Echo und Raum, bleibt dabei aber immer stilvoll und präsent. Niemals zu viel, niemals zu wenig. From textile designer and weaving apprentice to comic artist and DJ; this might not be a common career, but in the case of Heinz Seidenbusch it makes sense. The Salzburg-born has been associated with the Viennese collective Schönbrunner Techno for some time now and is always able to thrill listeners anew. No matter whether you are on the dance floor, at a bar, or sitting on your couch on a Saturday afternoon, his deep sound, which still leans towards disco, is always fitting. It loses itself inside of echo and space, but always remains classy and focused. Never too much, never too little.

Vier Typen, jung und voller Energie. Nicht umsonst bezeichnen Joachim, Alain, David und Tobija ihre Musik selbst als Power-Pop. Und der kommt an, auch jenseits der Schweizer Grenzen. Als Support-Act durfte das charmante Quartett nicht nur vor ihren Landsleuten von den Lovebugs, sondern auch vor internatio-nalen Größen wie I Am Kloot auf der Bühne stehen. Ihr erstes Album „Esztergom“ (2010) sitzt wie angegossen: Die knackige Scheibe hinterlässt einen ebenso guten Eindruck wie ihre Konzerte, die ganz ohne viel Tamtam auskommen. Allesamt Vorzeichen für eine große Zukunft. Four lads, young and full of energy. It’s not without good reason that Joachim, Alain, David, and Tobija call their music power pop. And it works well, even beyond Swiss borders. The charming quartet has not only supported their fellow countrymen Lovebugs, but also international biggies like I Am Kloot. There first album “Esztergom” fits like a glove: The record sounds fresh and makes just as good an impression as their concerts, which work without big fuss. All of them signs for a great future.

Jacek Sienkiewicz gilt als erfolgreichster Techno-Produzent Polens. Mit seinem Label Recognition Records ist er überdies ein wichtiger Motor für die polnische Clubkultur. Auf Sven Väths Label Cocoon hat er mehrere umjubelte Alben veröf-fentlicht und ist mit diesen bereits einige Male um die Welt getourt. Sein Sound ist stilvoll, treibend und hoch musikalisch, seine Bühnenperformance einzigartig. Kurzum: Jacek Sienkiewicz ist eine der wichtigsten Figuren des Autoren-Techno der Nullerjahre. Jacek Sienkiewicz is considered to be the most successful techno producer in Poland. With his label Recognition Records he is, in addition, an important force for the Polish club culture. He has released several acclaimed albums on Sven Väth’s label Cocoon and has toured the world with them a number of times. His sound is classy, driving, and highly musical; his stage performance is unique. In short: Jacek Sienkiewicz is one of the most important characters of the noughties creating techno with a strong personal signature.

Island. Das Land am Polarkreis hat seit Björk und Sigur Rós erstaunlich viel her- vorragende Musik hervorgebracht. Auch der Sänger von Seabear hat zwischen seinen Walfangfahrten zu viel Freizeit und münzt diese in verhuschten Kammer- orchester-Pop um. Sindri Már Sigfússon ist einer jener Songwriter mit Laptop, die es verstehen ihre Songs vollkommen natürlich und zwanglos klingen zu lassen. Gleichzeitig verbindet er den Sound von echten Instrumenten mit den unendlichen Produktionsmöglichkeiten des Rechners. Immer jedoch hat er den konkreten Song vor Augen, was er auf bereits zwei Alben auf dem renommierten Label Morr Music eindrucksvoll bewiesen hat. Iceland. The country at the polar circle has brought forth an astonishing amount of excellent music since Björk and Sigur Rós. The singer of Seabear, too, has too much spare time at hand between his whaling expeditions and turns that into coy chamber orchestra pop. Sindri Már Sigfússon is one of those songwriters with a laptop who know how to make their songs sound entirely natural and casual. At the same time, he combines the sound of real instruments with the endless production possibilities of the computer. Still, he always has the specific song in mind, as he already impressively proved on two albums which were released on the renowned label Morr Music.

Unter all den vielversprechenden Produzenten elektronischer Musik, die einem dieser Tage aus Ungarn unterkommen, gelten Slap In The Bass als die internati-onal renommiertesten. Wer ist Stroon? „Ein Verrückter, der sich ganz dem Leben hingibt.“ Zumindest beschreibt er sich selbst so. Für Außenstehende ist es aber vor allem seine Leidenschaft zur Musik, die ihn ausmacht. Das slowakische Multitalent ist nach einer 15-jährigen Reise durch Metal, Hardcore, Dub, Roots-Reggae und verschie-dene Elektronik-Stile im (Post-)Dubstep angekommen. Diesen zelebriert er in den komplexen Kompositionen auf seiner fantastischen Debüt-EP „Ruine noire“. Es kommt nicht von ungefähr: Stroon ist Profi. Der Musiker aus Košice hat Komposition und Percussion am Konservatorium in Bratislava studiert. Who is Stroon? “A weirdo with full commitment to life.” At least that’s how he describes himself. For third parties, however, what defines him is, above all, his passion for music. After a 15 year long journey through metal, hardcore, dub, roots reggae, and various electronic styles, the Slovakian multi-talent has arrived at (post-)dubstep. This type of music he is now celebrating in complex compositions on his fantastic debut EP “Ruine noire”. It didn’t come out of thin air: Stroon is a professional. Sogar wenn er sich auf Stimme und Gitarre beschränkt, ist die Musik des 23-jährigen Matthias Frey aka Sweet, Sweet Moon sehr interessant; mit Streichquartett, Sampling und sanfter Elektronik ist sie allerdings ein echtes Erlebnis. Frey ist klassisch ausgebildet, er experimentiert mit den Technologi-en der Gegenwart, englischen, US-amerikanischen, aber auch österreichischen Musiktraditionen – und trägt so einen gewichtigen Teil bei zum aktuellen Wiener Songwriting-Wunder. Mit seinen Chor-Arrangements, Sampling-Spielereien und Streichern ist Sweet, Sweet Moon eine Art österreichischer Owen Pallett. Even if he limits himself to vocals and guitar, the music of the 23 year old Matthias Frey aka Sweet, Sweet Moon is still interesting; with a string quartet, sampling, and soft electronics, though, it is a great experience. Frey has a classical music education, he experiments with technology from the pre-sent, English, US American, but also Austrian music traditions – and therefore he plays an important role in the current Viennese songwriting miracle. With his choir arrangements, sampling shenanigans, and string instruments, Sweet, Sweet Moon is kind of an Austrian Owen Pallett.

Witch-House war 2010 in der Musik das große Schlagwort. Nie davon gehört? Könnte daran liegen, dass die Bands unbuchstabierbare Namen hatten wie ,†‡† oder oOoOO. Tempelhof haben daraus gelernt und sich für ihre geisterhaften Musik einen Bandnamen ausgesucht, den man sogar aussprechen kann. Eiskalte Synths, Tranquilizer-Beats, verhallte Stimme und generell so viel Entfremdung und Einsamkeit, dass es für 13 Waisenhäuser reicht – so klingen Tempelhof in etwa. Ihre Songs heißen „Crakkhouse“ oder „Ketamine“ – hurra, pack die Anti-depressiva ein, Tempelhof sind da! Witch house was the buzzword in music in 2010. Never heard of it? Could be due to the fact that the bands had unspellable names such as , †‡†, or oOoOO. Tempelhof have learned a lesson from this and have chosen a band name for their spooky music which you can actually pronounce. Ice-cold synths, tranquiliser beats, voices drenched in reverb, and generally enough alienation and loneliness to suffice for 13 orphanages – that’s about the sound of Tempelhof. Diese sind elektronische Juwelen mit zerbrechlicher Stimme, viel Tempo und unglaublichem Sound- und Ideenreichtum. Entdeckt, ausgebuddelt und gleich unter Vertrag genommen wurden Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs von Hot-Chip-Mastermind Joe Goddard. Ein Remix für die Friendly Fires ist bereits in Umlauf. Und Freunde der Junior Boys sowie von Erlend Oye bzw. The Whitest Boy Alive kommen hier ebenfalls auf ihre Rechnung. As of now, not much is known about this primeval monster. It wears bizarre headgear, looks sad most of the time, and gets the internet community excited with just a handful of songs. They are electronic jewels with a fragile voice, lots of tempo, and an unbelievable richness of sounds and ideas. It was Hot Chip’s mastermind Joe Goddard who discovered, dug up, and instantly signed Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. A remix for Friendly Fires is already in circulation. And friends of Junior Boys as well as Erlend Oye or The Whitest Boy Alive will also get their due.

Wer „die Harmonien der 80er, die kräftigen Rhythmen der 70er, die Melodien der 60er und die raue Elektronik des 21. Jahrhunderts“ vereinen will, kann im Normalfall nur grandios scheitern. Bei der Band The Uniques ergibt das Ganze aber auf einmal Sinn. Die drei Jugendfreunde aus Bratislava haben sich in ihrem Heimatland und Tschechien bereits eine beachtliche Fanbasis erspielt und mit ihrer Veröffentlichung „From The Dust“ ganz deutlich am Eisernen Vorhang gerüttelt, der Musikfans aus West- und Zentraleuropa leider noch immer geistig von Acts aus Osteuropa abschirmt. Höchste Zeit, die Band live zu sehen! People who want to combine “the harmonies of the 80s, the powerful rhythms of the 70s, the melodies of the 60s, and the rough electronic music of the 21st century” usually have to terribly fail. When the band The Uniques do it, however, it suddenly makes sense. The three childhood friends from Bratislava have already built up a considerable fan base in their home country and in the Czech Republic. With “From The Dust”, they clearly shook the iron curtain which is unfortunately still mentally shielding Western and Central Europe from Eastern European acts. It’s about time to see them live.

Poesie trifft hier auf Akkordeon, mal im Stakkato gespielt, mal als ein sanftes Dröhnen im Untergrund. Jana Vébrová lässt Punk, Folk und Lyrik zu einer fantastischen Melange verschmelzen. 2007 erschien ihr Debüt und ihre bisher einzige Veröffentlichung „Kykyrý“ – ein Album, dem sie einen gewissen Kult-status verdankt. Im Norden von Tschechien bezog sie eine Mühle und feilte dort an ihren Songs. Am Album werkte Vébrová übrigens mit ihrem Ehemann, dem tschechischen Musiker und Komponisten Ivan Archer. Ihre Auftritte absolviert sie meist solo. Here, poetry meets accordion, at times playing staccato, at others adding a soft roar in the background. Jana Vébrová makes punk, folk, and lyricism melt into a fantastic melange. In 2007, her debut and so far only record “Kykyrý” was released – an album which gained her a certain cult status. In the north of the Czech Republic she moved into a mill where she tweaked her songs. Vébrová was supported by her husband, the Czech musician and com- poser Ivan Archer. At concerts, she performs solo, most of the time.

Weatherall begann seine Karriere als Musikjournalist und DJ. Er stieg schnell zum international gefeierten Star auf und remixte im Laufe seiner Karriere Acts wie New Order, die Happy Mondays, Björk, Saint Etienne, The Orb oder die Stereo MCs. Als Produzent zeichnete er maßgeblich für das legendäre Primal-Scream-Album „Screamadelica“ verantwortlich. Falsettstimmen waren vor einigen Jahren mit den Scissor Sisters, Antony And The Johnsons und den Junior Boys ganz groß angesagt. Aber auch 2011 sangen sich James Blake, Jamie Woon und Owen Pallett in ihrer Kopfstimme auf Magazin- covers und pressten geheimnisvoll glitzernde Pop-Perlen hervor. Genau das um- reißt auch den Klangkosmos von When Saints Go Machine ganz gut. Gänsehaut packt den Hörer aus einem toten Winkel und lässt ihn nicht mehr los. Ihre Alben „Ten Makes A Face“ (2009) und „Konkylie“ (2011) sind detailreich arrangiert, mit aufregenden Texturen versehen und schaffen es trotzdem, große, euphorische Momente auf dem Silbertablett zu servieren. Als dieses dänische Trio 2005 die Dance-Hits „Flat Beat“ und „Satisfaction“ mit den Mitteln einer Rockband coverte, war die Aufregung groß. Die Kombination eher simpler Dance-Tracks mit dem Instrumentarium von melodischen Rock- muckern war neu und umwerfend. Who Made Who bleiben bei aller Tanzekstase aber immer virtuos, cool und überraschend. Gerade ihre Konzerte zeigen die Band regelmäßig in ansteckender Spielfreude. Das Album „The Plot“ aus dem Jahr 2009 brachte, so die Süddeutsche Zeitung, „Pop auf den Punkt“ und bescherte der Band eine Coverstory beim deutschen Magazin Intro. When, in 2005, this Danish trio covered the dance hits “Flat Beat” and “Satisfaction” with the tools of a rock band, the excitement was great. Das gleichnamige polnische Duo macht schon seit 1999 herrlichen Krach und klingt wie eine Mischung aus den White Stripes und den Liars. Nur mit Schlag-zeug, Bass und Vocals bewaffnet spuckt dieses Ungetüm punkige Slogans und zappelige Brocken Sound in die nähere Umgebung. Nach drei Alben gab es heuer den ersten Auftritt beim renommierten Festival Primavera Sound in Bar-celona. Take the name of your favourite director, change one letter, and make something entirely different out of it. That’s how Woody Allen becomes Woody Alien. The Polish duo behind this name has been making a wonderful racket since 1999 and sounds like a mix of The White Stripes and Liars. Armed only with drums, bass, and vocals, this monster spits out punk slogans and fidgety pieces of sound. After three albums they performed at this year’s edition of the renowned festival Primavera Sound in Barcelona for the first time.

Und das drei Monate vor Erscheinen von „Conatus“, ihrem erst dritten Album, das einen großen Schritt in Richtung Zugänglichkeit macht. Zola Jesus tanzt an der Grenze zwischen Noise und Pop, zwischen Jupiter und Sparta, zwi-schen Tag und Nacht. The Waves Vienna Music Conference constitutes a part of the festival and offers the possibility to attend keynotes and panels, and participate in workshops. The subject-specific programme which will serve as the basis and inspiration for many years of pan-European cooperation will be concerned with current issues in the music industry, but puts its main emphasis on the exchange between Eastern and Western Europe.

Im Mittelpunkt von Coded Cultures stehen heuer europäische Positionen einer aktuellen Kunstpraxis, die sich auf Medien und deren (Re-)Konfiguration zwischen urbanem und virtuellem Raum konzentriert. Der Fokus wird dabei auf Medien-kunst, Medientheorie, neue Kunst- und Kulturartefakte sowie Prozesse, die durch solche Kulturformen entstehen und sich auf die Gesellschaft auswirken, gerichtet. Mit dem Untertitel „City As Interface“ wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die Stadt als medienkulturelles Territorium und als Schnittstelle einer Vielzahl kultureller Codierungen, Verbindungen und Abstraktionen gelegt. This year’s Coded Cultures focuses on European positions of the current art practice which concentrates on the media and its (re-)configuration between urban and virtual space. At the center of interest will be the topics of media art, media theory, new art and cultural artifacts as well as processes which are created by such forms of culture and which have an impact on society. The Subtitle “City As Interface” suggests that Coded Cultures will pay particular attention to the city as a media-cultural territory and as an intersection of a multitude of cultural codes, relations, and abstractions.

DEN öffENTLICHEN RAUM NUTzEN USING pUBLIC SpACENeben den internationalen Partnern wird auch mit nationalen Netzwerken, Pro-jekten und Organisationen zusammengearbeitet. Es wurden Module entwickelt, die sich insbesondere im öffentlichen Raum und mit der Nutzung von Strukturen der Projektpartner erarbeiten lassen. Dazu zählen das Museumsquartier Wien, die Urania, das Badeschiff, das Areal der Wienflussmündung und des Donaukanals (zwischen Ringturm und Urania), große Teile des zweiten Wiener Gemeinde-bezirks und darin ansässige Off-Spaces, Ateliers, Projekträume, Büros und Gale- rien. Besides the international partners, Coded Cultures also cooperates with national networks, projects, and organisations. Modules which are to be constructed especially in public spaces by use of structures of project partners have been developed. Amongst them are the Museumsquartier Vienna, Urania, Badeschiff, the area around the estuary of the river Wien and the Danube canal (between Ringturm and Urania), major parts of Vienna’s 2nd district, and off-spaces, studios, project spaces, offices, and galleries located there.

Coded Cultures presents works and ideas in connection with processes, networks, and contexts. For this reason, a dynamic festival structure was created, which extends classical forms of displaying new media art such as exhibitions, presentations, and symposia with new formats. In order to bring together a variety of European media cultures, Coded Cultures is employing a sub-curatorial model: besides individual artistic positions, Coded Cultures invited networks to propose and organise contents and formats – amongst others, Transmediale Berlin and the Medialab Prado Madrid.

Coded Cultures eröffnet das Festival 2011 mit dem japanische Präsentationsformat Pecha Kucha und leitet damit einen zweiwöchigen Wiener Medienkunst-Fokus ein. The main hall of Vienna’s Getreidebörse (corn exchange) was transformed into an event location by the Serapions Ensemble, who also financed the reconstruction. Coded Cultures opens the festival 2011 with the Japanese presentation format Pecha Kucha and, with that, starts a two-week media art focus in Vienna.

Am Fokustag werden in Koopera-tion mit der Transmediale Berlin, dem Medialab Prado Madrid, dem Amber Festival Istanbul und dem Enter Festival Prag internationale Positionen der Medienkunst und neuer Medienkulturen im RaumD diskutiert. Urania – ab / from 27. 09. 2011Theorie- und Diskurspositionen zu Coded Cultures werden an vier Tagen von diversen KuratorInnen thematisiert: Technopolitics (Armin Medosch), Future Fluxus (Andreas Leo Findeisen), dérive (Zeitschrift für Stadtforschung) sowie der Games Culture Circle aus Berlin präsentieren unterschiedliche Zugänge zu „City As Interface“ und integrieren nationale- sowie internationale Themen im Rahmen von Präsentations- und Diskursformaten. Theoretical and discursive positions on Coded Cultures will be discussed by a number of curators during four days: Technopolitics (Armin Medosch), Future Fluxus (Andreas Leo Findeisen), dérive (Magazine For Urban Studies) as well as the Games Culture Circle from Berlin will present different approaches to the topic “City As Interface” and integrate national and international issues in the course of presentation and discussion formats.

Workshops – ab / from 27. 09. 2011Vier Tage lang finden im THIS.PLAY Workshops mit internationalen Gästen, die aktuelle Praktiken von Medienkunst und Interventionen thematisieren, statt. Der Off-Space mit Werkstatt bietet Möglichkeiten für die Workshop-TeilnehmerInnen, unter Anleitung von erfahrenen KünstlerInnen gemeinsam Projekte zu erstellen. For four days, workshops with international guests who will discuss current practices of media art and interventions will take place at THIS.PLAY. The off-space with integrated workshop offers participants the possibility to create common projects under the supervision of experienced artists.

At the presentation of the new studio album of UKO, selected works from the audio-visual OpenRemix-Project will be shown in the course of an exhibition.

Lange ist an „The Sista Sadie Life Show“ gefeilt worden – entstanden ist ein sonnen- durchflutetes, urbanes Elektronik-Soul-Geflecht mit Schlenkern zu Hip-Hop und Breaks, ein kosmopolitisches, fein gearbeitetes Werk, das nicht nur von der Reifung einer großen Stimme erzählt, sondern auch von Liebe zum Detail. Album-Release und Ausstellung mit Arbeiten von Harald Hund, Alek Kawka, Tanja Lepschi, Anita Schmid, TOMAK, Valence u.v.m. UKO took a long time polishing and tweaking “The Sista Sadie Life Show“ – the result is a sun-drenched, urban, electronic-soul nexus with slight detours to hip hop and breaks; a cosmopolitan, de-licate piece which not only tells a story about the maturing of a great voice, but also about attention to detail.
