• The word X is the verb form of the Japanese word Y, which means to dash or sprinkle water .The word X is often used in Japanese to describe pouring out water with sufficient momentum to cause splashing or spilling. X is used in Japan to describe a type of dish where hot broth is poured over noodles, as in X udon and X soba. In the 1980’s, the word X moved from the lexicon of the food industry to a completely different industry altogether. It reached mainstream America in the 1990’s after patrons of the Japanese visual arts were inspired to introduce the concept in their work as well. Reception to X phenomenon in the western world ranged from extremely negative (“one of the most degrading acts in the industry”) to plain weird (“significant advance in human behaviour). ID X.

• X is a phenomenon and subculture of recreational drug users who engage in sexual activities with one another, either one-on-one or in groups. Also called chemical sessions, these parties involve the use of Y as a potent aphrodisiac, euphoriant, and stimulant. Other party drugs like MDMA and GHB are less associated with this term. Since stimulant drugs such as Y drastically delay the need for sleep, increase sexual arousal, and tend to inhibit ejaculation, sexual encounters can continue for many hours, as a typical Y high lasts about eight hours. X is cited as the cause of rising HIV rates in the gay and bisexual male community, because the abuse of Y can cause sores and abrasions in the mouth which can turn typically low HIV risk sex acts such as oral sex into very high risk sexual activity and transmit HIV. • .onion is a “pseudo-top-level domain host suffix” indicating an anonymous hidden service reachable only via the Tor network. Now defunct, one of its largest services was called X Y (two word term), which was taken down as part of Operation Darknet in 2011 by Anonymous ‘hactivisists’.

• X Y was a large repository of child pornography (with over 1 million images), where its clients could even find advice on creating new secure websites to distribute more images of child abuse, etc.

• Y came up with the character of X while working on the 1988 mockumentary short film, “the X story”. It is said that the inspiration for X was John Holmes, a legendary pornstar. Set in the late 1970’s and 1980’s i.e the ‘Golden Age of Porn’, the film chronicles the rise and fall of X, a male pornstar with an exceptionally large Z. The film was shot in 1987 using a video camera and steadicam provided by Y's father. Some scenes were shot at a motel. Y raised money for the film by cleaning cages in a pet store. Later in 1997, armed with greater funds, Y expanded his short film into a full scale motion picture, which earned him a nomination for best original screenplay at the 70th academy awards. ID X,Y. • X, a documentary, is an expose of the cigarette industry that first aired in 1976. It is said of X, “It is one of the most powerful anti-smoking films ever made. You will never see it.” This second sentence refers to the fact that makers of Y sued the filmmakers and suppressed further copies of the documentary from being released until 1982.

• The California Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation created a manual to accompany the documentary, titled "A Curriculum for X”.

Page 15: Waves'14 Vices Quiz finals

6

• The first two paragraphs of its Introduction read: The California Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation is pleased to provide this booklet containing a self-contained curriculum for upper elementary and junior high school students to supplement the viewing of X. Considered by many to be the most powerful anti-smoking documentary ever made, X contrasts the advertising image of the Y with the reality of six American cowboys dying of cigarette-related illnesses. The film, produced in England in 1976 and later suppressed by the makers of _____ cigarettes, illustrates the intrinsically false nature of cigarette advertising. It makes the Y less attractive. The X Curriculum is designed to maximize the educational and emotional impact of seeing the documentary.

The Uncyclopedia entry of this creature reads thus:“X is a famous Asian Y from Utah who fucking owns you. He enjoys sleeping and being more ripped than you. Born at the Beginning of Time to loving parents Chairman Mao and A Wandering Bear, he took seven steps and proclaimed, "I am the chosen one." X quickly grew into a bigass owning machine, following a steady diet of celery and Soylent Green (leading to his present greenish complexion). “

The same article goes on to claim that X suffers from chronic Narcolepsy, which he genetically inherited from his father, Chairman Mao, which explains his excessive sleepiness. ID X.

The Mourning Bride is a tragedy written by British playwright William Congreve. It premiered in 1697 at Betterton's Co., Lincoln's Inn Fields. The play centers on Zara, a queen held captive by Manuel, King of Granada, and a web of love and deception which results in the mistaken murder of Manuel who is in disguise, and Zara's also mistaken suicide in response.

In Scene III, Zara has the following lines

As you'll answer it, take heedThis Slave commit no Violence uponHimself. I've been deceiv'd. The Publick SafetyRequires he should be more confin'd; and none,No not the Princes self, permitted toConfer with him. I'll quit you to the King.Vile and ingrate! too late thou shalt repentThe base Injustice thou hast done my Love:Yes, thou shalt know, spite of thy past Distress,And all those Ills which thou so long hast mourn'd;---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

J. Wellington X, generally referred to as X, is one of the characters in the long-running comic strip Y, created by E. C. Segar and originally called Thimble Theatre, and in the Y cartoons based upon the strip. X was one of the dominant characters in the newspaper strip, but when Y was adapted as an animated cartoon series by Fleischer Studios, he became a minor character. The character seems to be inspired by someone whom Segar encountered during his career. According to fellow cartoonist Bill Mauldin, the name was suggested by that of Wellington J. Reynolds, one of Segar's instructors at the Chicago Art Institute. His personality was based upon that of William Schuchert, the manager of the Chester Opera House where Segar was first employed. "Windy Bill", as he was known, was a pleasant, friendly man, fond of tall tales and hamburgers. ID X.

X was a king of Phrygia, a region nowadays part of Turkey. One day some of his farmhands brought him a satyr they had caught napping in the vineyard. This creature, part man, part goat, still groggy and much the worse for wear, had been thoroughly trussed up to keep him from escaping. X immediately recognized Silenus, right-hand satyr to the god Dionysus, and ordered him set free.Silenus explained that he and his master had just returned from the East where they had been engaged in spreading the cultivation of the grape. Dionysus had brought back a tiger or two, an ever-expanding flock of followers and one very drunken satyr. Silenus had conked out in X's vineyard to sleep it off. Now he was grateful to the king for treating him with dignity, and so was Dionysus. The god was so pleased, in fact, that he offered to grant whatever X should wish for. Now, you didn't get to rule a kingdom in those days without a pretty active grasp of what makes for a successful economy. X didn't have to think twice. As the simplest plan for the constant replenishment of the royal treasury, he asked that ___________________________.Arching a godly eyebrow, Dionysus went so far as to ask if X were sure. To which

the king instantly replied, "Sure I'm sure." So Dionysus waved his pinebranchsceptre and conferred the boon.

Pornography is broadly illegal in India. As a result the original website was censored by the Indian government under its anti-pornography laws. This was met with criticism from the likes of prominent Indian libertarian bloggers and journalist Amit Varma. Eventually the mainstream media columnists joined in criticizing the ban as reflecting a "meddlesome, patriarchal mindset" of a "Net Nanny" government. This resulted in an online movement to save the website from being destroyed.Initially the creators of the site chose to remain anonymous, going under the assumed collective name Indian Porn Empire. However in 2009, the creator of the site Puneet Agarwal, a second generation Indian living in the UK revealed his identity in an attempt to fight against the ban. However a month later, due to family pressure he announced his decision to take down the comic strip. The presence of a character bearing a resemblance to Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan also met with criticism on Indian television channels.ID the website.

• X is a term that refers to the hazardous intravenous use of Y with Z in the same syringe. Y acts as a stimulant, whereas Z acts as a depressant. Co-administration is meant to provide an intense rush of euphoria with a high that is supposed to combine the effects of both drugs, while hoping to reduce the negative effects, such as anxiety, hypertension, palpitations and other common side effects of stimulants and sedation/drowsiness from the depressant. While this is somewhat effective, as one drug (the CNS stimulant) triggers the sympathetic nervous system and the other (the CNS depressant) triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, the two systems that regulate the fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest responses, respectively, and simultaneous activity of the two pathways is what normally keeps one's body in natural homeostasis, there is an imperfect overlap in the effects of stimulants and depressants. Additionally, by suppressing the typical negative side-effects of the two drugs, the user may falsely believe they have a higher tolerance, or that they are less intoxicated than they actually are. This can cause users to misjudge the intake of one or both of the drugs, sometimes fatally. The practice of X has caused a number of high profile deaths. Some famous victims of X include John Belushi, River Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mitch Hedberg and Layne Staley. ID X,Y and Z.

• X was the second studio album by British band Y, one of the pioneers of the Britpop movement. X’s title track deals with the theme of cocaine and methamphetamine addiction. According to songwriter Z, the opening lines of the song can be explained thus (partially redacted): All your dreams are made when you're chained to the M and the N. M and N are often used to chop up cocaine for snorting. "Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon" - When people are addicted to cocaine or meth, usually they live day to day by just keeping the drug in their system and constantly using it. • Definitely one of the most ubiquitous cigarette brands, X’s origins are somewhat disputed.

• While they first appeared in a 1961 episode of The Dick Van Dyke show, they were most prominently visible in their current known form in a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, in which a young William Shatner pulls out an X and makes as if to light it on an airplane before being shown a 'NO SMOKING' sign.

Page 37: Waves'14 Vices Quiz finals

• Since then, it has come to be the brand preferred by actors all over, and is the connecting factor in several movie and TV show universes, including Breaking Bad, Friends, and Californication, among several others. Its most famous appearance was perhaps along with the unimaginatively titled Cigarette Smoking Man, also known as Cancer Man and C-Man, in the TV show Y. (C-Man’s autographed pack of X cigarettes were once available on eBay for $175.)

• I want to start this off by thanking X for selling these in 36-packs. I’ve put it on subscription, and if they want to start selling a 72-pack, sign me up. I have three reasons for needing this much X, and their names are Liam, Samuel and Hank.

• This used to be a good Christian home. But it’s not about moral judgment anymore. I’m way beyond that. I’m in survival mode. If I don’t supply X, I’m going to find my dish towels hidden in the basement, stiff as aluminum. The other day, I almost cut my hand on a sock. I am sorry to speak so frankly, but a woman has got to be practical.

• The funny part is, they think they’re being sneaky, with their 45 minute showers and sudden need for “privacy”, as if I’m going to walk in on them journaling. They slink around the house like unfixed cats, while I try to announce my location at all times. No one needs to ask me to knock anymore. I knock on the walls. I practically wear a cow bell. I’m not looking to catch anyone by surprise, believe me. I’m just trying to get through this.

• The other day my husband was watching me unload the groceries, and he asks me, all sweetness and light, “Honey, what’re you doing with all that X?”

• The band A’s song titled B led to rumors in the media that tied A with drug use: Some critics declared the band was glorifying the use of drugs. However, members of the band frequently denied any claims that the song was advocating use of the drug. The band claimed the lyrics focus on providing an objective description of the topic without taking a moral stance.

• Critics, however, were not the only ones who misunderstood the song's neutral tone; fans would sometimes approach the band members after a live performance and tell them they “shot up to B,” a phenomenon that deeply disturbed the lead singer of the band, as a result of which, he remained reluctant to play the song on tour.

Page 42: Waves'14 Vices Quiz finals

5

• It didn’t help that B was only one of A’s songs with similar subject matter. Indeed, another one of their songs is about purchasing $26 worth of drugs near Lexington Avenue in New York City. The song is sung from the point of view of the buyer, who is traveling to meet the "man” in the song’s title, a drug dealer.
