WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Surprise – shock – sadness – all words to express the feelings of Wawota residents – and beyond – on the announcement that King’s Store in Wawota will be closing on August 3rd. (Even the clock on the Corner Building stopped when the news hit the street.)

We thank the King family for their dedicated service to the community for over 40 years – you will be greatly missed!

And the temperature variations in the past week – not unusual to change from a hoody to T-shirt in a matter of hours. We hear that one day in Paris, the temp was to reach 42°C – an all-time record breaker – so the whole world is seeing climate change.

A senior’s complex in Brandon had the unique idea of “beating the heat” on the 25th – Christmas in July! Santa, Christmas tree, staff and residents in festive attire, turkey burgers with all the fixin’s, Christmas trees and candles carved out of watermelon, festive songs – they had it all – oh yes – and everyone was greeted by Merry Christmas – we had an awesome afternoon!

We are continuously hearing comments about the lack of mosquitoes this summer – so far anyway! (It’s not a complaint, just a “wonderment” – seems like the conditions are perfect – but guess not completely right. A visit to the Reston Park one evening last week made us thankful of their absence at home – they were there – big, bold & hungry!!

Had the privilege of taking in some of the activities of the Annual Maryfield Fair on the 26th – what a fun-filled day – good food, awesome exhibits of produce, preserves, baking, flowers, artwork, etc. – as well as great entertainment (music and young folk’s attractions). Horse show/competition added to the already activity-packed menu. Hats off to the organizers – all your hard work was rewarding – again!

Have a great Heritage Days’ Weekend everyone!!

You asked ?? Question: How does a normal berry picker react when they dump half a pail of juicy plump saskatoons on the ground, not realizing that their pail was not attached to their belt? Answer: Okay – so I guess we’re normal.

TRAVEL AGENT TALES

A client called inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost information, she asked, “Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?”

A man called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, “I heard Dallas was a big airport, and I need a car to drive between the gates to save time.”

An agent just got off the phone with a man who asked, “How do I know which plane to get on?” The agent asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, “I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these darn planes have numbers on them.”

A woman called and said, “I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola on one of those computer planes.” I asked if she meant to fly to Pensacola on a commuter plane. She said, “Yeah, whatever.”

PORTER’S POULTRY

I will be selling fresh chickens this Sunday, August 4th across the road from the Red Barn farmer’s market. Chickens are $3.80/lb, hope to see you out there!! PS. If anyone is wondering why I sell privately and do not sell within the Red Barn market, it is because my chickens are processed at a locally inspected plant in Manitoba, but it is not registered Inter-provincially, which it would need to be in order for me to sell at a public market. Thank you for understanding.

A man and wife rushed into a dentist’s office. The wife said, “I want a tooth pulled. I don’t want gas or numbing cream or anything because I’m in a terrible hurry. Just pull the tooth as quick as possible.” “You’re a brave woman,” said the dentist. “Now, show me which tooth it is.” The wife turns to her husband and says, “Open your mouth and show the dentist which tooth it is, dear.”

Those who stretch the truth usually find that it snaps back.

Three men enter the lobby of a sixty-story skyscraper only to find that the elevator isn’t working. They’ll have to walk up sixty stories. One says, “Look, to make it seem like less of a chore, let’s each tell a sad story. It’ll take our minds off the pain.” They start up. The first man tells about having lost his first love to another man. At the twenty-first story, the second man talks about how illness has plagued his family. When they start up the last twenty floors, the third man says, “I’ll tell you a real sad story. I forgot the key to the office.”

“WIDER” WAGER

When the “loser-of-the-wager-to-date” recorded his pick for the Riders/Lions game on Saturday, it said – “Sorry, but I think I have to take the Riders”. Well, sorry or not, he picked right – but not to worry – we’ll find the secret again in games to come. Our advice – enjoy it while you can!

An interesting weekend of football. First of all, Hamilton wrecked Winnipeg’s unbeaten record. Then the Riders took both games against the Lions in a home and home series – the first time since 1974!

Who do we pick on Thursday when the Ticats come to town??

I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I will live to be 80?” He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco or drink beer or wine? “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.” Then he asked, Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?” I said, “No, my other doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy.” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking or bicycling?” “No, I don’t.” I said. He asked, “Do you gamble or drive fast cars?” “No,” I said. “I don’t do any of those things.” He looked at me and said, “Then why do you want to live to 80?”
