Fossils of bird-like dinosaurs discoveredin Australia.—INTERNET

SYDNEY, 20 May —Seven different killerdinosaurs once inhabited what is nowsoutheastern Australia, ranging in size fromcat-sized killers to a nine-metre-long T Rex-like predator.

The discovery represents a higher thanexpected biodiversity of meat-eating,theropod (bird-like) dinosaur fossils frombetween 105 and 120 million years ago, saidgeoscientists and researchers from Australia’sMonash University and Museum Victoria.

“We had not expected to find fossils fromsuch a large range of dinosaur species in thisarea. The fossils we have collected range from

tiny, cat-sized killers to Australia’s version ofT Rex, a nine-metre-long predator with powerfularms and razor-sharp claws,” Tom Rich fromMonash University, who led the research, said.

“In total, 1,500 isolated bones and teethof various kinds of dinosaurs have been foundin Victoria so far. Their meaning is onlybeginning to be unravelled by detailed studyand comparisons with other fossils world-wide,” added Rich, the journal Public Libraryof Science reports. At the time these dinosaursruled, southern Australia was part of theAntarctic Circle. Despite the cold, there was ahigh diversity of small predators, similar to theVelociraptor, featured in Jurassic Park, according to a Monash statement.

“One of the reasons for the success ofsmall, theropod dinosaurs may be their warm-blood. As close relatives of birds, they hadfeathery insulation which helped maintainhigh body temperatures. The cool, dampclimate may also explain the discovery of thesame dinosaur species in both Australia andthe northern continents,” Rich said.

The research team included experts LesleyKool, Dave Pickering and professor PatVickers-Rich. —Internet

China is huge market forCanadian lobster

BORDEN-CARLETON, 20 May—China is buying lobstersfrom Canada’s Atlantic region at a rate 30 times greater thantwo years ago and is one of the area’s biggest customers, officials say. After buying $1 million worth of lobster in 2010,China’s purchases increased to $30 million in 2011 and areexpected to continue growing. “I believe China will becomeour No 2 export customer this year,” Geoff Irvine, executivedirector of the Lobster Council of Canada, told the CanadianBroadcasting Corp. Belgium is the second largest buyer forAtlantic Lobster, acting as a gateway for Canadian lobstersales into Europe. The United States remains the top market.

The Chinese like big lobsters, preferring those that are 2pounds and up, industry officials said. By-the-Water Shellfishon Prince Edward Island ships live lobsters from AtlanticCanada to China year round. A new call for lobsters comesfrom China every few days, head of sales Ryan Tremere said.

Study unpicks gene changes behind breast cancerLONDON, 20 May—

Scientists have mapped thecomplete genetic codes of 21breast cancers and created acatalogue of the mutationsthat accumulate in breast cells, raising hopes that the diseasemay be able to be spottedearlier and treated moreeffectively in future.

The research, the first ofits kind, untangles the genetichistory of how cancer evolves, allowing scientists to identifymutational patterns that fuelthe growth of breast tumors, and start to work out theprocesses behind them.

“These findings haveimplications for ourunderstanding of how breastcancers develop over thedecades before diagnosis inadults and might help to findpossible targets for improveddiagnosis or therapeuticintervention in the future,”said Mike Stratton, who ledthe research team.

Breast cancer kills morethan 450,000 women a yearworldwide and is the mostcommon cancer amongwomen, accounting for 16percent of all cases, accordingto the World HealthOrganization (WHO).

A study last year by theInstitute for Health Metricsand Evaluation in the UnitedStates found that global breastcancer cases have more thandoubled in just three decades, from 641,000 cases in 1980 to

1.6 million cases in 2010 - apace that far exceeds globalpopulation growth.

“This is the first timewe’ve been able to delve fullyinto breast cancer genomesin such a thorough way,” saidPeter Campbell, head ofcancer genetics and genomicsat the Wellcome Trust SangerInstitute in Cambridge, wherethe studies were led.

The work had givenscientists “a full panoramicview of the cancer genome”and helped them identify“mutational patterns ratherthan individual mutations inspecific genes”, he added.DNA MUTATIONS

“We’ve known for manyyears now that all cancers aredue to abnormalities ofDNA...that occur in everysingle cell of the body overthe course of a lifetime,” saidStratton.

“But although we’veknown that, it’s remarkablehow rudimentary ourknowledge is about what theprocesses are that cause theseabnormalities, thesemutations in our DNA.”

Stratton’s teamsequenced the genomes ofthe 21 breast cancers andcatalogued all the mutations. They found five majorprocesses that cause one letterof code to be changed toanother letter. Genetic codecomes in four DNA letters,

ANN ARBOR, 20 May—Discarding unused medications inthe trash is a better way to limit the risk of poisoning and reduceair and water pollution, US researchers suggest.

First author Sherri Cook, a doctoral student at the Universityof Michigan, and Nancy Love, a professor in the department ofcivil and environmental engineering, compared the totalemissions created by take-back, trash and toilet disposal methodsof leftover medications.

In most cases, the US Food and Drug Administrationrecommends throwing the medications away, but only if peopledon’t have access to a take-back programme.

Flushing unused pills down the toilet is no longer advised,as the active ingredients in drugs have been found in drinkingwater and aquatic environments, but about 40 percent still flushunused medication down the toilet, Cook explained.

In medication take-back programs, the returned drugs areincinerated as hazardous waste, Cook said.

“National policy seems to be changing to support take-back programmes, and we don’t know if that’s justified,” Cooksaid in a statement.

The study, published in Environmental Science &Technology, found if everyone trashed their extra drugs, theamount of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the environmentwould be significantly reduced.

The researchers encourage policymakers to focus ongetting more people to get rid of medicines by trash, rather thantake-back.

A,C,G and T.Stratton said one of the

most exciting findings wasthat one of these processes ischaracterized by smallpockets of massively mutatedregions of the genome.

This sudden “storm” ofmutations is often seen inbreast cancers, he explainedin an audio briefing.

While his team don’tfully understand the processbehind these storms, theythink it may be down tocomponents of the cell whosenormal function is to edit, ormutate, DNA.

“What we believe...isthat sometimes in normalcells...this stops functioningproperly and over-functions.It causes too many mutationsand the accumulation ofthose mutations pushes thecell along the line to become

By the time the breastcancers are large enough tobe diagnosed, they are madeup of a number of geneticallyrelated families of cells, withone family dominating thecancer, Stratton explained.

CHANGZHOU, 20 May—Chinesecompanies have slammed the United Statesas “short-sighted” and warned of a trade warafter it imposed hefty duties on solar cells itsaid were being sold at artificially low prices.

The US Commerce Department onThursday slapped levies of between 31 and250 percent on the Chinese solar cellproducers in retaliation for the so-called“dumping”. The move is the latest in a long-running trade row between Washington andBeijing, who have clashed over a range ofissues that have on occasion had to be settledby the World Trade Organization.

China’s Suntech Power, which wasspecifically named in the US governmentinvestigation, called the move out of touchwith reality. “These duties do not reflect thereality of a highly-competitive global solarindustry,” Andrew Beebe, Suntech’s chiefcommercial officer, said in a statement lateon Thursday.

He said the company, the world’s largestmaker of solar cells, would work with the USgovernment to refute the duties.

“Despite these harmful trade barriers,

we hope that the US, China and all countrieswill engage in constructive dialogue to averta deepening solar trade war,” Beebe said.

Another company named by the USgovernment, Trina Solar, said it would stillattempt to serve the US market despite theduties and remained committed to keepingprices low. “This is simply what is required tounlock the next level of fossil fuel replacementin the United States,” Mark Kingsley, Trina’schief commercial officer, said in anotherstatement.—Internet

No flood in Bangkok this year: authoritiesBANGKOK, 20 May—

Bangkok and key economiczones, particularly industrialestates, will not be floodedthis year, vows a Thaigovernment official, BangkokPost online reported onSaturday.

Plodprasop Suraswadi, chairman of the WaterResources Management andFlood Control Committee, saidduring the weekly “ YingluckGovernment Meets thePeople” talk show on Saturday.

In 2011, the countryfaced the worst flood crisis innearly 50 years which killedmore than 500 livesnationwide. At least fiveindustrial estates wereinundated.

Even if the amount ofnorthern runoff is as much asthat of last year, there will beno floods in the capital andnearby provinces because thegovernment is now wellprepared to prevent arecurrence of the great flood

of 2011, he said.Apart from the existing

dams, the government hadprepared areas for waterretention. As well, he said, thedredging of canals andwaterways was now 60-70percent completed and wouldbe finished soon. This wouldimprove the conditions forwater runoff to be driven outto the sea rapidly.

Simon Meyjes, whoheads the century-old marinegroup Australian Reef Pilots, said it appeared anenvironmental disaster hadbeen averted by the crewdumping some of the

The ship, which sufferedan engine breakdown en routefrom Shanghai, was reachedby a commercial tug, PT Kotor,on Sunday as it drifted in openwater in the Coral Sea towardsthe Outer Reef, on the edge ofthe main reef body.

ANCHORAGE, 20 May—A climber on Alaska’s Mount McKinley died in a 1,100-foot fallthat started with an effort to retrieve a sliding backpack during an attempt to ascend NorthAmerica’s tallest peak, the National Park Service said on Saturday.

The Friday afternoon fall was the first serious accident in this year’s climbing season, theservice said. The climber — who was not from the United States — was in a three-person partythat was not roped together. At the time of the accident, the group was heading up from the16,200-foot level of the 20,320-foot mountain, officials said.

The trio had just finished ascending a steep section when the climber tried to recover abackpack that had slipped downhill, according to the account given by one of the victim’sexpedition partners, said Maureen McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for Denali National Park.

The fall was likely not a typical slide down a steep slope, McLaughlin said. “It was probablymore of a situation of stumbling, going after the pack,” she said. The climber’s body wasrecovered by park rangers and flown off the mountain, park officials said. The climber’s identitywas being withheld pending notification of family members.—Reuters

MUNICH, 20 May—Chelsea cleared the finalhurdle in a season of never-ending challenges whenthey beat Bayern Munich4-3 on penalties in theGerman team’s AllianzArena stadium to becrowned EuropeanChampions for the first timeon Saturday. In what may bethe final act of his Chelseacareer, Didier Drogba sealedvictory in a tension-packedChampions League finalwith the last kick of theshootout to clinch victory

was saved by Petr Cech afterDrogba fouled Franck Riberyto concede the spot kick.

Bayern skipper PhilippLahm even won the toss todecide which end theshootout would take placeand it was held in front of theBayern fans.

Chelsea’s success, builton the millions invested inthe club over the last nineyears by Russian billionaireRoman Abramovich, cameon another night of unlikelyglory in a season that seemedto be going nowhere undercoach Andre Villas-Boaswho was sacked in March.

Chelsea wererejuvenated by interim coachRoberto Di Matteo who notonly steered them to thissuccess but also won the FACup two weeks ago. Whetherhe gets the job permanentlyremains to be seen, but thereis little more he could havedone to prove he is the manfor the job.

He ended the campaignnot only with the two cups, but also making Chelsea thefirst London club to win thetrophy since the competition

after he had headed Chelsea’sequaliser two minutes fromtime to force a 1-1 draw andsend the game to extra time.

Bayern, just as in 1999 whenthey lost 2-1 to ManchesterUnited who scored two goalsin stoppage time, were withintouching distance of the cupthanks to an 83rd-minuteheader from Thomas Mueller. But history came back tohaunt them as Drogbasnatched victory from theirgrasp with a late equaliser toset up his team to victoryagainst all the odds.

Even in extra timeBayern had a goldenopportunity to seal the winbut Arjen Robben’s penalty
