Players, Parents, Coaches, and Community Members,
The summer has been busy and very productive for the girls basketball program. We started off the summer with the youth basketball camp for our upcoming 3rd through 6th grade "Super Hoopers". We had over 30 girls in attendance for our 2nd annual 3day camp and it was a blast. The high school girls did a tremendous job working with our elementary girls and celebrating their successes with them. Ladies Great job mentoring our future Golden Bears! As a part of the camp, the girls learned many new skills and competed in competitions like block to block, buzzer beater, 1 on 1, and figure 8 passing. In addition to the competitions, the coaching staff created a "Super Hooper Club" where the girls that completed a set of skills 10 times would receive a free shirt for their efforts. Keep reading to see a list of the girls who earned their spot on the 2019 elementary "Super Hooper Club". Thank you parents for all of your help in making the basketball experience for your daughter(s) great!
After the youth camp, the high school and junior high teams began their team play and skill development work. The high school and JRL girls spent three days of minicamp reviewing / learning offensive and defensive schemes that will fit our teams for next season. The application of our work atminicamp came as we spent three days (June 1921) with the varsity and JV teams atthe Adrian College team camp in Michigan. The team camp was tremendous for our team development and for some great team bonding time. The varsity finished the camp with a 91 record with our only loss coming in the championship game against a very good Division I Westlake team. Our JV team finished 811 and won the JV tournament by avenging their only loss with a 20+ point win in the championship game against Wapakoneta. In addition to the actual games, the camp also held a varsity and JV shooting contest the first night and our girls swept both levels earning six free pizzas for their efforts. The camp was a great success and the girls earned a lot of respect from the teams that were present because of how well they played as a team. #TOGETHER
In addition to the minicamp and Adrian team camp, the high school girls participated in a 3on3 league on Monday nights that featured many local teams and several college teams. The games were played at Wadsworth HS, Wooster HS, Shelby HS, and Berlin Hiland HS. The high school girls played very well highlighted by victories over a Baldwin Wallace team and a Mount Union team. The John R. Lea girls also played in a 3on3 league every Tuesday night in June and finished by winning the championship game over Smithville by the score of 196. The JRL players on the championship team were McKenna Baney, Alyssa Geiser, Skye Morris, Cheyanne Chupp, and Mehgan Miller. Great job ladies!
Along with the activities mentioned above, the high school girls, JRL girls, and youth girls were also very dedicated to working on their individual skill development. We have the philosophy within theWaynedale Girl's Basketball Program that skill development in the summer is crucial for sustained success. As a result, each playerwas given a skill development paper that they could work on at the open gyms or at home. As they completed a skill, they would then check off the box. The skill development initiative for the high school and JRL girls was called "SEEC #1" which stands for "Skills Elite Effort Club". Similar to the Super Hoopers, the girls that completed all of the boxes have earned a shirt for their efforts. The high school girls were relentless with their skillwork as they completed a total of 3321 skill boxes this summer. The players were also divided into teams that competed for the most boxes completed and the winning team with 1063 total boxes checked was Laney Murphy, Sylvia Harrold, Cherlyn Miller, Jewel Persinger, and Tiana Mast. Congratulation girls!
I also want to send a big THANK YOU out to the parents and coaching staff for the time investment that they made this summer for our program. I realize that there are a lot of trips to the school and back made by the parents/coaches and I really appreciate your dedication.
Good luck fall athletes, be great teammates, and RFD!
Go Bears!
