The 2010-11 campaign under head coach Paul Westhead had a disappointing ending despite a promis-ing start.

With his fi rst full recruiting class on the roster, Westhead guided UO to a 9-2 non-conference record as the Ducks prepped for Pac-10 play.

In those fi rst 11 games, Oregon’s up-tempo off ense averaged 88.5 points per game, outscoring op-ponents by 18.7 points per game.

The Ducks full-court defense forced 27.4 turnovers per game as Oregon managed a 10.5-plus turn-over margin. In addition, Oregon shot 39.6 percent from the fi eld and averaged 18.0 assists and 15.1 steals per game.

Also, two fl oor leaders emerged for Oregon as junior point guard Nia Jackson embarked on the best season of her career, while junior forward Amanda Johnson continued her dominance on and off the fl oor.

In Oregon’s fi rst 11 games, Johnson nearly averaged a double-double with 19.9 points and 9.5 re-bounds per game, while Jackson averaged 15.5 points and 5.9 assists per game.

Unfortunately the Ducks failed to convert their early success in conference play. With a 4-14 league record, Oregon fi nished ninth in the Pac-10 – its worst placement since the 1992-93 season.

But Oregon suff ered its largest blow when Jackson was lost for the year after suff ering two sepa-rate knee injuries in a Feb. 3, 90-76 overtime loss at Washington. Entering the game against the Huskies, Jackson was leading the Pac-10 in scoring (16.8 ppg), assists (5.8 apg; 17th nation), and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9; 33rd nation).

The Ducks lost 11 of their fi nal 12 games, with Jackson injured for nine of those contests. On four occasions, UO also allowed a halftime lead to slip away in Pac-10 Conference play. Oregon State erased Oregon’s 20-point halftime advantage to even the season series with a 61-59 victory on Feb. 19 in Corvallis. Oregon also let a seven-point advantage evaporate at USC (Jan. 13), a two-point edge crumble against California (Jan. 29), before being clipped after leading by seven at the break at Washington (Feb. 3).

Oregon fi nished the season with an overall mark of 13-17 (.433), but against fourth-seed Arizona at the Pac-10 Tournament, the Ducks and Wildcats set a record by playing the highest-scoring game in the history of the tournament. Oregon fell agonizingly short of advancing past the fi rst round and winning its fi rst game at the Pac-10 Tournament since 2008, with a 90-89 loss to Arizona.

Season ReviewFIRST CLASS

Paul Westhead’s fi rst recruiting class fi nished its freshman campaign with three rookies emerging to start the fi nal nine games of the year. Point guard Ariel Thomas was forced into the fi re with on the job training as she took over starting duties following Jackson’s injury.

The Sacramento native did not receive a Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention nod like her team-mate Deanna Weaver, but proved to the league’s coaches her omission may have been in error at the Pac-10 Tournament.

Thomas willed Oregon to erase what was a one-time 18-point second-half defi cit as she scored a career and game-high 29 points against Arizona. In addi-tion, Thomas dished a career-high tying and game-high six assists – all in the second half. Thomas’ 29 points were also the most any Oregon women’s basketball player has scored in a Pac-10 Tournament game. Thomas ended her freshman season averag-ing 8.0 points and 2.2 assists per game, but blos-somed in her fi nal nine starts, averaging 14.3 points, 4.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Also with her in the starting lineup included Dani-elle Love and Weaver. Love averaged 3.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, but like Thomas, saved her best for last. The native of Everett, Wash., posted the fi rst double-double of her career with a career-high 11 points and also a career-best 13 rebounds in Or-

egon’s loss to Arizona at the Pac-10 Tournament.

Weaver, who received Pac-10 All-Freshman honor-able mention accolades, averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds as a rookie. She fi nished the season with eight double-fi gure scoring games.

THE FINAL CHAPTER

Oregon said goodbye to its six-member senior class as Kristi Fallin, Victoria Kenyon, Nicole Canepa, Tati-anna Thomas, Candyce Flynn and Ellyce Ironmonger each played their fi nal game in an Oregon uniform. Fallin averaged 7.0 points per game as one of UO’s main 3-points threats, knocking down 47 buckets from long distance. Canepa, Ironmonger, Kenyon and Thomas were each four-year members of the program.

YOU SAY GOODBYE; WE SAY HELLO

The Oregon women basketball team will always have the distinction of playing the fi nal basketball game at historic McArthur Court. On Jan. 8, 2011, the Ducks closed The Pit in style defeating Washington, 68-64, in front of a then season-best crowd of 2,854.

Two weeks later, on Jan. 23, Oregon set a Pac-10 re-cord as 12,320 fans packed Matthew Knight Arena to watch the fi rst women’s game at UO’s newest venue. The Ducks proved victorious with an 81-72 Civil War win over Oregon State.

BANGO

For the second consecutive year under Paul West-head, Oregon’s off ense continued to post impres-sive numbers. Once again the Ducks produced one of the highest scoring averages in the country with 76.3 points per game, ranking 15th in the nation. Oregon’s 8.5 three-pointers per game ranked third, while the Duck defense ranked 29th in the country averaging 10.9 steals per game.

MILESTONES

At Washington State on Feb. 5, Oregon attempted a program and Pac-10 record 40 three-pointers, while the teams combined to knock down 26 three-point-ers - a new UO single-game record.

Oregon tied a program single-game record and knocked down a season-best 15 three-pointers in its 79-76 loss at USC on Jan. 13.

Oregon set a new single-game and Pac-10 record with 75 rebounds against Sacramento State on Nov. 28, 2010.

The Ducks also set a new Oregon single-game re-cord with 34 off ensive rebounds in the season open-er against Western Oregon on Nov. 13, 2010.

Kristi Fallin’s 5-of-6 performance from three-point range (.833) in the Jan. 23 win over Oregon State tied for sixth in UO single-game history. Victoria

Season ReviewKenyon’s 5-of-6 performance in a loss at USC (01/13) also ties for sixth.

Nia Jackson became the fi rst Oregon player since Corrie Mizusawa (Feb. 5, 2005) to record dou-ble fi gures in assists when she posted the fi rst double-double of her career with 17 points and a career-best 11 assists in Oregon’s Dec. 19, 100-71 win at Saint Mary’s. The Seattle native did it again on Jan. 13 with a season-high 25 points and 11 assists at USC.

AMANDA JOHNSON

Amanda Johnson was named Pac-10 honorable mention for the second consecutive season after averaging 15.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Her 1,146 career points rank 18th all-time at Oregon while her 701 rebounds rank ninth. The native of Santa Rosa, Calif., has also reached the Oregon all-time top-10 in three additional categories with 124 three-pointers (8th all-time), 164 steals (8th all-time) and 20 double-doubles (7th all-time).

She fi nished her junior season leading the Ducks with 24 double-fi gure scoring games as well as leading Oregon in scoring on 16 occasions. She fi nished the year with nine 20-point games and eight double-doubles while leading Oregon on the board 20 times.

She was named MVP of the Oregon Invitational and Pac-10 Player of the Week on Nov. 29.

Off the court, Johnson was named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-America® wom-en’s basketball fi rst team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

She became just the second student-athlete in program history to be chosen as a fi rst team academic All-American.

In addition, Johnson was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team for the second straight year. NIA JACKSON

Oregon junior point guard Nia Jackson was named to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team, re-ceiving the fi rst league accolade of her career.

Before two knee injuries caused her to miss the second half of the Pac-10 season, Jackson led the league in scoring (17.0 ppg), assists (5.7 apg) and assist-to-turnover (1.9).

Oregon’s fl oor general missed the fi nal nine games of the season, and during her last game of the year on Feb. 3 at Washington, Jackson scored a game-high 22 points despite playing 28 minutes through pain. The Seattle native recorded her 20th double-fi gure scoring game of the season (40th career), and her 22-point eff ort was her eighth 20-point game of the season and the 10th of her career.

Jackson recorded two double-doubles (assists & points), and led Oregon in scoring eight times while leading the Ducks in assists on 18 occasions.

She was named Pac-10 Player of the Week on Jan. 10 and was also named to the all-tour-nament team at the Oregon Invitational.

TEAM AWARDS

Junior guard Nia Jackson was named the program’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Pac-10 in scoring average (17.0 ppg), assists (5.7 apg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9).

Senior guard Kristi Fallin took home the Most Improved Award after fi nishing the year av-eraging 7.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while knocking down 47 three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Laura Stanulis was the Green & Gold Award recipient for contributions on and off the fl oor.

For the second consecutive year, junior forward Amanda Johnson was named the Harry Ritchie Scholar-Athlete award recipient. Along with Johnson, Ellyce Ironmonger, Fallin and Stanulis were each honored as scholar athletes.
