SUMMER BEAMING FORTH

As you can probably tell from past editions, I do like a good poem. On page 9 you will find John Clare’s wonderful sonnet heralding the arrival of summer.

But are you, like me, noticing that our summers are starting earlier every year? I wonder if we will ever again see a genuinely cold and protracted winter. Global warming is now an undeniable reality.

Along with WBU3A you can now do your bit to fight climate change. We are inviting members to elect to Go Paperless and stop receiving paper copies of the bi - monthly Newsletter and rely instead on view-ing and/or downloading the online editions via the WBU3A website.

Members with surnames beginning A to M can send in an election to Go Paperless during June. Members with surnames beginning N to Z can send in an election in July. After that the facility to elect to Go Paperless will be open to any member at any time.

If do you wish to Go Paperless please use the exact wording set out below and e - mail your election to me at [email protected]

If there are two members at the same address the election should in-clude details for both members. If only one of two members makes an election we will continue to send a paper copy to that address.

Any member can cancel their Go Paperless election at any time and revert to receiving paper copies, by simply contacting me .

And rest assured, those of you who want to continue receiving paper copies of the Newsletter do not have to do anything.

Steve Degnan editor

I/We (insert names AND membership numbers) wish to stop receiving paper copies of the WBU3A Newsletter. I/We agree to receive all official WBU3A notices via the online Newsletter.

IN BEATRIX POTTER’S FOOTSTEPS

On a perfect weekend sandwiched between the broiling heat of Easter and the freezing cold of the May bank holiday thirty six of us visited Derwentwater in the Northern Lake District. Derwent in Old English means River with Oak trees. The fells surrounding the lake are cov-ered with oak and beech trees, and when we visited the bluebells were in flower. The area is also home to red squirrels.

On Saturday some of us ventured up Cat Bells and were rewarded with fantastic views across to Skiddaw, the sixth highest mountain in England. It was well worth the effort. Others walked by the lake and took afternoon tea at Lingholm - credited by Beatrix Potter as the in-spiration for Mr McGregor’s garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

On Sunday we walked in the woods and sheep pastures around Ulls-water, taking in the birds and flowers and the Aira Force falls. The Herdwick sheep so typical of the Lakeland Fells help to keep the grass down. Their rough wool is highly durable and keeps them warm and cosy in the harsh Cumbrian winters. Beatrix Potter was a keen Herd-wick farmer and president of the breed association for many years.

It is amazing what gleanings of information you can get holidaying with fellow WBU3A members. In the French Quiz run by our HF guide Phillipe we learned that General De Gaulle was 6’ 6” tall whilst ex President Sarkozy is only 5’2”. In the gin tasting session, where we mixed ingredients of our choosing, the crystallised ginger and straw-berries proved most popular, the liquorice and cardamom less so. On our final evening we danced just to show we still had the energy.

We stayed in Portinscale. The name means “harlot’s hut” in Norse. During our stay we saw no sign of that, and of course we were models of propriety. Did they do things differently in the past? Our thanks go to Ian and Liz for organising us so graciously and efficiently. Plans are already afoot to visit the Brecon Beacons next year (see booking details on page 14). We hope you will join us. All are welcome.

WILLIAM BOOTH BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM

You probably know that William Booth founded the Salvation Army, but do you know about his Nottingham roots? WBU3A members visit-ed the William Booth Birthplace Museum marking the house where he was born in 1829. 12 Notintone Place, Sneinton was miraculously saved from the slum clearances of the 1960s. Three elegant Geor-gian terraces remain to house exhibits of the life of William Booth and his family. Visits are by arrangement with the curator, who was our host and guide and the provider of tea, coffee and biscuits.

William's parents moved away to Bleasby when he was two years old but we were able to see his baptism records at St Stephen's church across the road, and the record of his marriage in 1855 to the re-doubtable Catherine Mumford. She was an active preacher for the movement as well as mother to eight children, five of whom entered the “Army” and took its message of succour to the poor and needy across the world. Initially a Methodist, William and Catherine later formed the Christian Mission and moved to Whitechapel in East Lon-don. He held many meetings in tents, pubs and music halls to reach the poor people who would never venture into the more staid and snobbish churches of the “respectable” middle classes.

In 1878, the Mission became the Salvation Army, dedicated to a war on sin and evil, and its members adopted military ranks to describe themselves. In 1904, when in his 70s William embraced the motor car and toured England preaching to enormous crowds and even went to Australia to expand his work. William Booth died or was "promoted to glory" in 1912 aged 83. Today the Salvation Army has over 50,000 UK members and over 1.5 million members worldwide.

The Soc. Comm. will try to arrange another visit later in the year. Joy Wingfield

Chair’s Annual Report 2018 - 2019

West Bridgford U3A Registered Charity No: 1130962

Our charity is governed by a constitution as recommended by the Third Age Trust. Commit-tee members are elected by the membership and, on election, become trustees of the chari-ty. New committee members are given an in-duction of what is involved in being a trustee. Committee members can only serve for a maxi-mum of 6 years and the chair for a maximum of 3 years. This June, I will retire as chair and Lynn Astle and Brian James will be retiring from their roles as group co-ordinator and equipment specialist. On behalf of the membership, I would like to thank Lynn and Brian for all their work for our U3A.

Although an independent charity, West Bridgford U3A is part of the wider movement under the auspices of the Third Age Trust. We are also part of Notts Network of U3As. Our involvement with the net-work means we can share ideas and be given, and offer, support to other local U3As. This year our vice chair, Paco Saucedo, has also helped plan the first Nottinghamshire Network Conference “Ageing Well” which will take place in October.

The objects of our constitution were amended last year in line with the recommendations of the Third Age Trust. Our object now is: The advancement of education and, in particular, the education of old-er people and those who are retired from full time work by all means, including associated activities conducive to learning and personal de-velopment in West Bridgford and surrounding locality.

So, anyone who is retired or semi retired who lives in the area is eligi-ble to join. The objects mean we can offer a wide variety of activi-ties, run by our members for our members. With over 60 interest groups and over 800 members, we follow the Third Age Trust principle of self help learning and the maxim of “learn, laugh and live!”.

We offer groups to suit all tastes from physical activities such as walk-ing, cycling, sailing and table tennis to interest groups such as art, music, jazz appreciation and philosophy. Groups take place in a vari-ety of locations such as a church hall, pub or a member’s home. This year’s new groups include a Litter Picking Walking group and a Ger-man for Beginners group. Any member can suggest a new group and as long as there is sufficient interest, we are able to start that group. We employ no paid staff so the charity and all the interest groups are run by our members. Thanks to all our group co-ordinators for all their work over the last 12 months.

Our Social Committee organises a wide variety of trips and activities. This year they have run beetle drives, quizzes and visits to places such as William Booth’s birthplace, Spire Hospital and BBC studios.

This year we also organised a first aid course so now we have mem-bers who are able to act as first aiders where necessary.

Many of our groups take a break over the summer, so last August we ran a series of activities under the banner of the Summer Holiday Club. This was the second year we had run this, and because of its success, we will be running it again this August. Thanks to Irene Gor-don for organising it again this year.

In November, we had our annual lunch for group co-ordinators where we were able to update them on information such as data protection and safeguarding and to get feedback from them.

Because we have no paid staff we can keep membership fees low. This year we are recommending that we increase the fee by £1 to £16 a year. We have no outside funding so we are totally self reliant. Fi-nancially, we try to keep a maximum of 6 months reserves. Our major financial outlay is the newsletter which is produced 6 times a year. This year we have changed to a commercial company which not only prints but also posts out the newsletter for us. Soon we are going to offer our members the choice of receiving the newsletter either elec-tronically or by post. A full financial report for the year will be availa-ble to members at our AGM on Thursday 27 June.

Every month we hold Open Meetings in the West Bridgford Baptist Church where members socialise and enjoy listening to a speaker. This year speakers have given talks on such diverse topics as Russian Women, astronomy and fire investigation. Thanks to Carol Williams who finds such interesting speakers.

Finally, I would like to thank all the committee members for all the support they have given me over the last 3 years.

Pat Green Chairperson [email protected] ________________________________________________________ I Love To See The Summer Beaming Forth

I love to see the summer beaming forth And white wool sack clouds sailing to the north I love to see the wild flowers come again And mare blobs stain with gold the meadow drain And water lilies whiten on the floods Where reed clumps rustle like a wind shook wood Where from her hiding place the Moor Hen pushes And seeks her flag nest floating in bull rushes I like the willow leaning half way o’er The clear deep lake to stand upon its shore I love the hay grass when the flower head swings To summer winds and insects happy wings That sport about the meadow the bright day And see bright beetles in the clear lake play

“THIRD AGE MATTERS” MAGAZINE

“Third Age Matters” is the quarterly magazine of the national Third Age Trust. Currently it is sent to all members of West Bridgford U3A, and that costs us over £1,500 per year. (This expense is in addition to the affiliation fees which we have to pay to the Third Age Trust).

Numerous members have asked to stop receiving this publication. In view of the apparent lack of interest, and to help reduce our costs, we have decided that in future the magazine will only be sent to those WBU3A members who tell us they want to read it.

Therefore, if you want to continue receiving a copy of “Third Age Mat-ters” can you please call Tony Beale on 0115 921 1451 or email him at [email protected]. If Tony does not hear from you, we will assume you no longer want to receive the magazine.

SCIENCE FOR EVERYONE

Professor Ramiro Alberio, University of Nottingham, School of Biosci-ences, gave us a fascinating account of some of the cutting edge de-velopments in stem-cell research. The growth of human skin cells can now be reversed so that they revert back to stem cells, which have then been used to modify the embryos of pigs by implantation.

This may in future mean that if you need a new kidney, a surrogate pig will grow it for you using your own stem cells. The transplanted organ will not be rejected as it is grown from your own tissue. These reversed stem cells could also be used to grow tissue layers such as heart muscle in the laboratory, to use as repair patches for a dam-aged heart. Such tissue could also be useful for testing new drugs.

All this is still at the research and development stage, so don’t rush to your GP demanding a new liver just yet. Stay off the booze until they perfect the technique.

Many Thanks to Professor Alberio. His talk was fascinating, the only downside being that, with so much mention of tinkering with the in-nards of pigs, it almost put me off my bacon sandwich!

WHAT A LOTTA BOTTLE!

Members who bring their plastic bottle tops to Open Meetings might want to know what actually happens to them.

Jean takes them to the “main man” in Radcliffe. He sorts and washes and takes the tops to the waste recyclers in Colwick who sort them into specific types of plastic, which can then be sold to various compa-nies throughout the UK for re-use in manufacturing.

The sale proceeds we get are gift aided to Dove Cottage Day Hospice in the Vale of Belvoir. See http://www.dovecottage.org. Sue Bailey

Above - Janice Sutton.

I hope that like me you have enjoyed looking at these paintings. Due to their varying proportions and the limited number of colour pages, I have been forced to shrink some pictures quite drastically to fit them all in. I apologise to those artists whose pictures have been given less space than others– this was very much a random process.
