GRAYLING - The sus-
pense is over.Five-time defending
AuSable River CanoeMarathon champions Andrew Triebold of Grayling and Steve LaJoie of Mirabel,Quebec are officially in. Thechamps waited untilMonday, the very last day of registration, to join the fieldbut theyre here now andtheyre apparently very ready.
Those who were worriedthe champs wouldnt be partof the 77-team field this yearare breathing a sigh of relief.
Those 2013 title aspirants who no doubt would havehad a much better chance of winning without Trieboldand LaJoie among the com-petitors can only dig down alittle deeper into their reser-voir of resolve and prepareto push that much harder.
And its certain that any of the two-person teamsseeking to seriously chal-lenge the defending champs will need to push hardrelentlessly from start to fin-ish along the 120-mile racethat stretches along the winding contours of the AuSable River from Grayling to Oscoda.
The 66th annual CanoeMarathon kicks off Saturday night at 9 with the tradition-
al LeMans-style sprint to the waters at the Old AuSableCanoe Livery. Triebold, 37,and LaJoie, 37, have to befavored to win again. Thepair completed the course ina winning time of 14 hours,42 minutes, 43 seconds last year. The winning time for2013, given the water levelsand projected weather con-ditions, is projected to beabout the same according tothe River Report link onthe canoe race website.
If the results of theGeneral Clinton Regatta in
New York over the MemorialDay weekend and SundaysSpike Challenge are any indication, Triebold andLaJoie appear to be in topform again.
The pair captured the70-mile regatta on theSusquehanna River in New York by more than 12 min-utes. They also won SpikesChallenge, which is an annu-al warm-up for many of theracers for this weeksmarathon, covering the 26-mile distance between theraces starting point inGrayling to the McMasterBridge in an economicaltime of 2 hours, 38 minutes,
11 seconds. [See photosfrom the start of SpikesChallenge elsewhere in thisissue.]
The runner-up toTriebold and LaJoie at the
Challenge was the team of race veterans CameronMcClain and Steve Corlew.McClain, 30, of Grayling ispartnered for the AuSablerace this year with a strong racer out of Canada, Patrick Armstrong, 35, of Lac-a-la-Tortue, Quebec. McClainand Armstrong are among the contenders who will bevying to wrest the title fromTriebold and LaJoie.
Another very strong con-tender this year is the teamof Josh Sheldon, 32, andMatt Strieb, 49, both of Grayling. They have a com-bined 20 years of AuSableexperience. Sheldon and
Strieb make a formidableteam. They raced in theGeneral Clinton Regatta, tak-ing third place overall.Sheldon finished second last year with then-partner Ryan
Halstead of Grayling. Striebcame in fifth last year withpartner Matt Meersman.
Halstead, 26, of Grayling,is teamed this year withCanadian Mathieu St. Pierre,25, of Shawnigan, Quebec.Halstead and St. Pierre racedin the General ClintonRegatta, too, and turned in astrong performance, taking fourth overall a short dis-tance behind Sheldon andStrieb. This is Halsteads 11thmarathon and St. Pierressecond. Last year, St.Pierreand fellow rookie SamuelFrigon came in seventhplace.
Aside from the teams of
Sheldon and Strieb andHalstead and St. Pierre, other contenders in 2013include Nick Walton, 40, andSteve Kolonich, 41, of EatonRapids with 26 years of rac-
ing experience betweenthem; Colin Hunter, 32, of Grayling and Jason Hatfield,35, of Grayling who alsohave a combined 26 years of racing experience and fin-ished third in the SpikesChallenge; Mike Davis, 22, of Homer and Pete Mead, 32, of Traverse City, who have 16 years of combined experi-ence and came in fourth inthe Spikes Challenge; FredBlais, 26, of Shawnigan,Quebec and Ben Schlimmer,24, of Brockport, N.Y.; TedSmutek, 45, of Luzerne andMatt Gabriel, 29, of Grayling with 18 combined years;Michael Schlimmer, 26, of
Cortland, N.Y. and Frigon,17, of St. Boniface; and SeanCasey, 34, of Wyoming andBrad Wilson, 31, of Rockford with a combined 22 yearsbetween them.
Of the 77 teams partici-pating in this years AuSablerace, there are five womensteams, 10 mixed teams, 11masters teams and 10 sen-iors teams.
The time trials thatdetermine the starting posi-tions for the LeMans-stylesprint to the water started Wednesday and continuethrough Thursday andFriday at Penrods CanoeLivery.

PETOSKEY It was a greatrun and a great time for thePetoskey 10-11 all-stars.
The young men coachedby C.T. Shuman and assis-tants Phil Duran and JimSobczak captured the districttournament held in Sault Ste.Marie and then had theopportunity to vie in the sec-tional tournament on thehome field this past week-end. Unfortunately, Petoskey had to face the defending state champions fromMidland Northeast in the
sectional best-of-three tour-nament and lost twice.Coach Shuman is thrilled
that his kids got the chanceto play in the sectionalgames, though, especially with the home fans cheering them on.
We had a great group of kids who worked really hardand came together very well, said Shuman. It really showed with the success they had on the field.
The roster of Petoskey 10-11 all-stars included JanssenByers, who played pitcherand shortstop; catcher
Tough Tim Lake; first base-man and pitcher NathanRodriguez; second basemanand pitcher Brett Sobczak;shortstop and centerfielderJacob Sobczak; AndersDuran, who manned the hotcorner and pitched; TrevorShuman, the lefty pitcher, centerfielder and first base-man; and left fielder CadenEaton; outfielder TimCrittenden; outfielder EeroGross; outfielder KyleKozlowski; and outfielderand second baseman BenTaylor.
The kids displayed their
skills this season, gainedsome very valuable experi-
ence and had fun.We preached to the kidsfrom the start, Youre going out there to have fun,Shuman reported. Every oneof them had a great time andthats what it was all about forus.
Petoskey defeatedCheboygan and Sault Ste.Marie in the district tourna-ment before playing arematch with Cheboygan inthe championship game and winning 11-1.
In the title game, JanssenBuzzsaw Byers did his bestMax Scherzer imitation,
striking out 10 of the 12 bat-ters he faced before he ranout of pitches.
Tim Lake was a terror inthe first game of the tourna-ment, going 4-for-5 andTrevor Shuman was 2-for-3.In the second game, NateRodriguez visited rip city three times and JanssenByers also busted three hits. Anders Duran drilled two hitson the first day and was 3-for-4 on the second day of the tourney.
Everybody contributed,Coach Shuman said. Someguys got big hits and other
guys made big plays in thefield. It was a total teameffort.
Even though Petoskey lostback-to-back games to pow-erful Midland Northeast inthe sectional series, it was agreat experience advancing past districts and getting toplay at home against thedefending state champions.
It was a great thrill for thekids, a great opportunity toplay on the home field infront of the parents andfans, Shuman said.Midland Northeast was very tough and very disciplined at
the plate. They won the statetitle last year as 10 year olds
and you could see why.Theyre a very solid team topto bottom.
Petoskey trailed just 4-0after four innings of Saturdays game before
Midland pulled away.It wasnt a blowout at thatpoint; we were just a coupleof hits and a couple of errorsaway from being right in it,Shuman said.
Shuman is looking for big things from this group of baseball all-stars.
Theyre not done playing this summer; nine of the 12kids are on travel teams sotheres still a few tourna-ments left for them to play,Shuman said. As a group, they love to play and love tocompete. I expect them tomake a strong run next yearas 12 year olds.

DNR fishing tip
Are you familiar with usingdownriggers? This tool is ideal when fishing the Great Lakesas it allows for controlled-
depth fishing and targetingspecies suspended in the watercolumn. Here are three thingsto keep in mind if you're con-sidering using a downrigger inthe future.
Manual vs. ElectricMaking a choice between
manual and electric depends
on how much you want tospend, how often you fish, andhow big your boat is. Manualdownriggers are less expensive
than electric but require more work on the part of the angler.
CannonballsThis is the weight lowered by
the downrigger that is attachedto your lure. These weightsusually range from four to 14pounds, make your selectionbased on how deep you intend
to fish (the deeper you go themore weight you need).
LeadsThis is the amount of line
between your cannonball and your lure. It also determineshow your lure acts in the water. The deeper you fish the short-er the lead needs to be.
