The goal of this group is to build a community around helping people navi-gate their path towards becoming healthier by losing weight and increasing physical activity in their lives. If you have tried to lose weight, you know the challenge is staying on track. Many weight loss programs can work, but what’s cru-cial is commitment, support, and accountability. Dear Friends, this fall weather feels so great. As you can see, I have my nurse hat back on. Lynn is having some surgery and I’m back on duty. When I signed on as a “support” dog, didn’t know I had to practice medicine. A wiggle and a snuggle work wonders. In November I’m off on vacation twice. I’m going stay in the country and have a great time running and playing while Lynn’s off to Florida and then Mexico. Fun in the sun before winter sets in. Isn’t the article on the quilters interesting? They make beautiful quilts. We have one but I’m not allowed to wrap up in it. The trips for the rest of the year look like fun—sign up soon. Hugs and Kisses..Sassie

Library News – October 2018

Hello Wilsonville Library Fans, Is everyone ready to have cooler weather? It’s time to test our fancy new heating system in-stalled during our renovation. They even promised us that all the areas of the building will be the same temperature at the same time! Here’s what’s going on in October for adults:

Tuesdays, October 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th at 6:30PM - Do you or someone you know need help with conversational English? The library is happy to offer an ESL Conversation Group each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30PM. This free group is led by volunteers Norm and Valerie, who have extensive ESL teaching experience. Open to all. On Friday, October 5th, at 6:00PM, our First Friday Film program continues in its accustomed glory. We’ll be showing a film that is based on a true story. Set in 1983, a couple is stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after a hurricane, and must find their way to Hawaii with a damaged ship and no radio. I can’t tell you the title of the film about this ADRIFT couple due to copyright police restrictions, but if you’re having trouble figuring out which film it is, call us and we’ll let you in on it.. On Monday, October 8th, the Wilsonville Library will, sadly, be closed for Staff In-Service Day. We’ll be back to normal hours on Tuesday the 9th! If you need to renew books, you can do so online, or by calling our renewal hotline at 503-659-8634. On Thursday, October 11th, our Book Club meets at 6:00 PM. This month, they’ll be reading the book The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nurs-ing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he’s still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested. So he decides to escape and embarks on a hilarious and entirely un-expected journey. As always, multiple copies of next month’s book are available the month before the meeting. Grab one today! On Saturday, October 13th, from 11:30AM to 3:00PM we’re showcasing the Historical Photo Roundup! Do you have pictures (from the 1800s to the 1980s) of Wilsonville people, places or things? Please bring your Wilsonville photographs for us to scan. The Wilsonville Boones Ferry Historical Society will copy your images right here on-site, and you will drive away with your orig-inal. The Society is asking for your help in growing their digital collection. Also on Saturday, October 13th, at 2:00PM, our very popular BookNotes concert series continues with Bernie Sims! Join Ber-nie Sims and talented keyboardist/composer/producer Brian Rose to hear some new, original music in an adult contemporary vein. On Monday, October 15th, at 1:00PM, our Genealogy Club will meet. At the meeting, you can discover new genealogical re-sources and tools, discuss personal research and goals, and learn from experienced genealogists. Free, and open to all levels, from seasoned genealogists to beginners. On Tuesday, October 16th, at 6:00PM, our Great Books Discussion Group meets. This month, we’ll be discussing The Meta-morphosis by Franz Kafka. Ask to join our Great Books mailing list to receive monthly scans of our readings. On Thursday, October 25th at 1:00PM, join us for an adult card-making class. Make your holiday cards amazing with this 4-week class series. We will create cards for the four seasons of the year, learning techniques like embossing and coloring to make your cards POP! Class cost is $20.00, and includes all materials. There is a class size limit of 16. Sign up at the Circulation Desk (or call) soon to reserve your seat! On Saturday, October 27th from 11:00AM to 4:00PM, we will host an American Red Cross blood drive in the parking lot. If you’d like to make an optional appointment, please call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Donate blood and change a life!

This program targets seniors and individuals of low/medium income. Training and program materials for this position are provided through IRS/AARP and starts December through January. No previous experience preparing tax returns is re-quired. However, returns are prepared using tax software so use of computer is necessary. There is a requirement to pass certification tests which requires a time commitment. This service makes a tremendous difference for many area resi-dents. Returns are prepared in Wilsonville on Thursdays from the first week in February until April 15th. Please contact Brenda, Local Coordinator at 906-285-3450 or [email protected] or Sue at [email protected] for more information, if you’d like to volunteer or if you have questions about requirements. WILSONVILLE PIECEMAKERS

In 1999 the Wilsonville Quilting group started as a result of Koko Sutton teaching a class at the Wilson-ville Community Center. Lois Humphrey was her back up. Several of the women involved in the class got together on a quilting project and as a result, enjoyed it so much they agreed to meet on Tuesday mornings at the Community Center. They called themselves the Tuesday Quilters. The group consist-ed of 5 women at that time; Walda Young, Lois Humphrey, Carol Grantom, LaVon Montelius and Ruth Lewis. Only two of these quilters still remain with the Wilsonville Piecemakers. The eldest quilter, La-Von Montelius is 95 years old and is still a very active member. Koko Sutton left the quilting group to start a quilting group at Coffee Creek Women's Prison. In 2009, Janet Perkins, a member of the WCSI asked the quilters to design a quilt to participate in Ore-gon 150, the state’s sesquicentennial. A photo of the quilt and the quilters was printed in the Wilsonville Statesman on May 27, 2009. The quilt was displayed in the Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce lob-by for the festival. Later, it was to go to the Wilsonville Public Library and finally, to Wilsonville City Hall. The group met in the Sunroom at the Wilsonville Community Center, then moved into a large classroom and is now quilting at the Tauchman House. The Wilsonville Community Seniors Inc. (WCSI) has pro-vided the quilters with a small annual budget. The funds are used by the quilters for fabric and various quilting notions, sewing machines and machine maintenance. Around 2012 the Tuesday Quilters changed their name to Wilsonville Piecemakers. The membership has grown from the original 5 women in the group to 12 women in 2018. They have increased the num-ber of donation recipients receiving donated quilts, pillow, hats, and pillow cases from 4 charitable or-ganizations to 12. They continue to partner with the original 4 organizations today and in some cases have expanded the items going to these 4 groups. In 2017 the Wilsonville Piecemakers worked with Sadie Wallenberg to provide 21 quilts and pillow cases to seniors in Wilsonville. Sadie provided these quilts at the beginning of December as a holiday gift. In 2017 they also donated 144 hats and 27 doll blankets to the Wilsonville Toy & Joy Makers Project through Wilsonville Parks and Recreation.

As of 2017 the Wilsonville Piecemakers have donated an average of 162 quilts each year to various or-ganizations. In addition to this, the group provides Meridian Park Hospital with breast cancer pillows. In 2018 we began knitting hats for Meridian Park Hospital for Shaken Baby Syndrome. The hats are done in purple to remind the parent/caregiver not to shake the infant. In 2018, the Piecemakers saw an increase in demand for their quilts, hats and pillows. They continue to get requests from existing organizations and from new ones. This is shown in the increase of donation recipients going from four organizations in 1999 to twelve in 2018. Over the years, the Piecemakers have received some grant monies from Wilsonville Parks and Recrea-tion. In 2017-18 the group received $7,355 and increased the number of quilts from 150 to 177 for a total of over 600 items produced. The number of quilters increased by two when two new machines were purchased with grant funds. WCSI and the Piecemakers are once again applying for grant monies to further increase the impact on the community. These quilters averaged 3.5 quilts per month

EDITOR’S NOTE: WCSI is proud to support the Piecemakers and Wilsonville is fortunate to have such talented and dedicated ladies providing these much needed and

appreciated service projects. Each month we will publish an article on one of the recipient agencies and the wonderful work they do...
