What is WCTR?Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, WCTR is one of the University’s recognised centres of research excellence.

It was the only UK research centre of its kind to produce world-leading research in RAE2008.

Research areas: destination development & reputation management; tourism, place, citizenship, inclusion & identities; events & hospitality management.

Who are We?• 20 full-time staff members (including three Professors & a Reader)

• 7 associate members (6 Visiting Professors & one Emeritus Professor)

• 18 doctoral students (10 fully funded full-time)

•Led by Professor Annette Pritchard since its creation in 2001

What do we do?

A major centre of doctoral education in our field;

Unlike many such centres, our leading researchers also contribute to our suite of tourism/events/hospitality undergraduate & masters programmes;

We provide consultancy & advice to organisations from Carmarthen to Croatia;

We are a world-leading research centre, specialising in:

(i) Sustainable, creative & competitive destination development

(ii) Social justice, citizenship & equitable tourism

(iii) Critical & applied events management

(iv) Critical perspectives in hospitality

How do we do it?

WCTR strives to produce world leading research and high quality consultancy services which engage practice and policy.

What makes much of our research distinctive is its ambition to make a difference to people and places and to advocate for a more sustainable and equitable world in tourism arenas.

Profs Morgan & Pritchard have given keynotes in Spain & Portugal, Prof Pritchard is Visiting Prof in Milan and WCTR has close links with Pompeu Fabra University (Spain)

Profs Morgan & Pritchard have given leading keynotes in China & WCTR has close links with ITS, Macau

Profs Morgan & Pritchard have given keynotes in New Zealand & WCTR has close links with the Auckland University of Technology

Prof Pritchard has given 2 keynotes in Iceland

Prof Morgan is Visiting Prof in Finnmark University College, Norway

WCTR has links with the Universities of Purdue, Southern California and Southern Carolina

Prof Jones has extensive links in the Middle East and Africa, where she has given keynotes and co-organised conferences, Dr Carlisle works on projects in The Gambia and Zanzibar and our students have gone on several African field trips

WCTR has partnered universities and tourism, hospitality & events organisations across UK & Europe, including in France, Belgium, Holland, Croatia, Italy, Bulgaria, Norway & Sweden, many of which partner Dr Ritchie’s alcohol research team

John Dobson and Nigel Jones have researched shark tourism and scuba diving in South Africa & Oceania
