On behalf of West Chester University, I am pleased to welcome you to our 2011-2012 season of cultural and community events.
West Chester University is proud to contribute to the rich cultural environment of our region. Annually, WCU hosts about 75,000 audience members for concerts, theatre and dance programs, lectures, exhibits, and other cultural events, many of which feature student and faculty fine and performing artists. Numerous campus performances and exhibits are held in the new Swope Music Building and the Performing Arts Center, which opened in the spring of 2007 and are cited among the top teaching, learning, and performing venues in the nation. Another popular venue is the historic Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, in Philips Memorial Building, the University’s signature building.
I appreciate the enthusiastic support that our neighbors throughout the region show for West Chester University’s cultural arts and the students, faculty, and staff who present them. Such support and our thriving regional arts collaborations—which include partnerships with the Kennett Symphony, Gilbert & Sullivan Society, and Brandywine Ballet—are essential for flourishing arts programs. Our cultural partners can now be found around the globe, with WCU faculty and students bringing their talents to destinations ranging from Broad Street to China.
Here on campus, the 2011-2012 season of cultural and community events promises to be outstanding, with attractions for every member of the family. I look forward to having you join us throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Greg R. WeisensteinPresident, West Chester University

Two Sides of CelticWednesday, October 5, 7:30 p.m.Gates Recital Hall, Swope Music BuildingAdults $20 • Seniors/Students $15
Masters of the Celtic Harp Gráinne Hambly and William Jackson, two of the foremost harpists of Ireland and Scotland, combine their talents on harp as well as concertina, tinwhis-tle, and bouzouki for a dynamic performance called “the most creative interpretations of Irish and Scottish traditional music you’re likely to hear.” You’ll never think of harp the same way again after hearing these two artists go from fast reels and jigs to expressive airs and everything in between, served up with Irish charm and dry Scottish wit.

Jason and Kim are the new wave of cutting edge magic. Young and hip, they combine the best in con-temporary music with fast-paced illusions to create a unique show that is a treat for the senses. Jason exhibits some of the best sleight of hand in the busi-ness and Kim’s costume changes have to be seen to be believed (and even then you might not believe it!). The show includes engaging audience participation and is suitable for all ages. Ride the new wave of magic with the Jason Bishop show.

Tim & The Space CadetsNovember 5, 2:00 p.m.Emilie K. Asplundh Concert HallAdults $10 • Seniors/Students $8
Brooklyn-based Tim and the Space Cadets play songs about the important things in life: pizza parties, snow days, and summer vacations. Songwriters Tim Kubart and Matt Puckett weave their own childhood memories through textured pop tunes, rockers, and lullabies, including their XMKiDs chart-topping single “Superhero.” They’re currently hard at work recording “Anthems for Adventure,” their first full-length album, about adventures as grand as riding a cardboard rocketship to space and as small as giving up old sneakers for new ones. A Space Cadets set is engaging, interactive, and totally awesome– a true indie rock experience for families and fans.

Sacred Earth Friday, February 24, 7:30 p.m.Emilie K. Asplundh Concert HallAdults $20 • Seniors/Students $15
Sacred Earth brings two rich and ancient Indian visual art traditions– Warli paintings and Kolam rice flour drawings– into conversation with Bharatanatyam. Performed against large-scale painted panels by master folk artist Anil Chaitya Vangad, Sacred Earth transforms the stage into a sacred space and invokes a deep connection to the Earth. Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy’s choreography gives physical form to the spiri-tual expression of the Warlis and Kolams, illustrating the ephemeral nature of our existence and celebrating the ongo-ing, ever-renewing cycle of life.

This Danish tenor sensation is a double threat as an actor and singer and has performed in countless sold-out concert tours and musical theater produc-tions worldwide, including in his native Denmark. Rossen came to fame when he assumed the lead role of Jean Valjean in the musical Les Miserables. He has appeared in productions of the musicals Chess, Copacabana, and Jesus Christ Superstar as Judas. Rossen’s musical style spans many genres, including musical theatre, popular music, gospel, and timeless standards.
SPECIAL EVENTA Celebration of Jelaluddin Rumi
“America’s bestselling poet is Muslim...
...Back in the 13th century, Rumi was loved by Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. Rumi’s prolific production of bite-sized verses now feeds the American appetite for easy-to-digest wisdom and morality. Or maybe he’s the best-selling poet in America today because his poetry is simple, clear, and speaks the truth—no matter what religion you call your own.”
POETRY NEWS, Poetry FoundationThe Illumination Band
Musical PerformanceSaturday, March 31, 7:30 p.m.Madeleine Wing Adler TheatreStudents Free • $10 general public
The Illumination Band has taken Rumi’s verse and mar-ried it to bluegrass, gospel, and Appalachian musical traditions. Soaring vocal harmonies, lilting melodies, and soulful blues give way to spoken-word poems. Blurring musical genres, crossing cultural boundaries, the Illumi-nation Band concerts cover a lot of territory but always return to deep yearning for transcendence.Stig Rossen presents

During 2011-2012 the College of Visual and Performing Arts plans another vibrant, new cultural arts season. As always, we continue to offer a wide array of art exhibits, theatrical programs, dance productions, and concerts by our stellar artist faculty and notable student ensembles. From our on-campus events to those off campus, we are committed to excellence in all the cultural arts. My colleagues and I are also very proud of our ever-growing number of artistic and educational partnerships with community, regional, national, and international arts organizations.
Music and all forms of creative artistic expression bridge differences in background and experience, introduce fresh perspective, and expand our vision. The cultural arts also preserve our heritage, add pleasure to the present, and provide a foundation for the future. Within this spirit, and in keeping with the University’s ongoing global initiative, is our expansion of arts programs throughout the world. Students and faculty regularly have the opportunity to study and perform abroad in a number of countries, including China, England, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Egypt, Austria, and Costa Rica.
College of Visual and Performing Arts students and faculty have a long tradition of providing high-quality artistic programs to the community and region. If you have yet to attend one of our events or have not done so in some time, you will be impressed by the degree of excellence. Many CVPA cultural events are available to you without charge or at a very reasonable cost. Please join us in the coming season to enjoy our many offerings and to experience firsthand the Performing Arts Center, together with the newly opened E.O. Bull Center for the Arts. Macbeth captures the timeless nature of the human experience. There is greed for power, murderous evil scheming, and the nobility of the fight for good and evil. The tortuous, guilty self-flagellation that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth succumb to is such a base human emotion. Without realizing it, they are both lost in the depth of the chasm they willingly stepped into.

Mongolia– Land of Genghis KhanNovember 14 and 15Buddy Hatton
Mongolia, the world’s 19th largest coun-try, is a huge, sparsely populated land that encompasses a fabulous array of pristine landscapes and a nomadic people whose lives are in many ways unchanged from the days of Genghis Khan and the mighty Mongol Empire. Come, let Buddy Hatton and his ex-pert camerawork introduce you to awesome expanses of rolling steppe; Mongolia’s famous horses and herdsmen; high glacial mountains; impenetrable forests and deep, crystal lakes; Reindeer People; experiences of the world– famous Nadaam Festival; a Nomad family in the Gobi Desert; and the real story of Genghis Khan.
Texas–Highways and BywaysDecember 5 and 6Dale Johnson
Did you know Texas has the second larg-est canyon in the U.S., has a cave where 20 million bats emerge at dusk, is an im-portant wine-producing state, is renown for heart research and treatment, has sites where mysterious ghost lights have been re-ported since 1883– still unexplained, and is one the two places in the U.S. where money is printed? These hours are only for meters located on the WCU campus; other meters in the borough are monitored until 10:00 p.m. weekdays and weekends. Please use the suggested lots on the right, as these are the lots that will not be ticketed during the event. If you are attending a weekday event between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and are unable to find parking in the suggested lot, a Visitor Permit can be issued from the Public Safety Office on South Church Street (labeled PS on the map).
