Figure 1: Block diagram of the WDM module operation

The Flashlink 2-Channel WDM is a wavelength division multiplexer / demultiplexer module for use together with the W03-C1 connector module. The unit is passive and there is no need for power or control.

The optical multiplexing is made for the 2nd and 3rd optical windows (1310nm and 1550nm).

The WDM has a 1310nm, a 1550nm and a combined WDM port allowing 2 optical signals to be multiplexed on a single fibre.

The multi mode version is delivered in a box that must be mounted from the rear of the frame.

The product comes with 2 SC/UPC fibre patch cords to connect the modules together.

The product is available in the following versions:

WDM-2 2-Channel WDM

WDM-2-M 2-Channel WDM multi mode

3 Configuration

The WDM-2-M is a self-contained module where the connector module is attached to the box protecting the multi mode WDM. This is mounted from the rear of the frame. The below text is applicable for WDM-2 only.

The WDM-2 has its own connector module: W03-C1. This module is mounted at the rear of the sub-rack. The module is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Overview of the WO3-C1 connector module

3.1 Mounting the connector module

This section only applies if the module is not purchased pre-mounted in a sub-rack.

The details of how the connector module is mounted, is found in the user manual for the sub-rack frame FR-2RU-10-2.

This manual is also available from our web site: http://nevion.com

3.2 Preparation of module Just before the module and the connector module are put together, the dust caps should be removed and stored in the enclosed plastic bag. The dust caps are removed from the connector module and the module card as we see in Error! Reference ource not found. and Error! Reference source not found..

Optical 2 is for 1310 nm (2nd optical window).

Optical 3 is for 1550 nm (3rd optical window)

4 Operation

The WDM-2 is an all optical module with no electrical connections; hence there will be no on-board processing or monitoring. If the module is faulty this can be monitored on the receiver end. The only possibilities for the module to fail are if either the fibre is broken, or the fibre connections at the rear are bad. Then no signal will pass the module.

4.1 Front Panel – Status Monitoring The WDM-2 is an all optical module, so there are no LEDs on the module.

Figure 5: The WDM-2 has no LEDs

4.2 Definition of coupler terms There are many different numbers related to both WDMs and couplers. We define here the most used terms.

4.2.1 Single mode Couplers / Splitters

Figure 6: The ports of a coupler

The coupler has 4 ports. Port 1 and port 2 are the input ports, port 3 and port 4 are the output ports. We assume the signal is entering the coupler via port 1. The optical effect in each port is denoted P1 to P4 respectively.

We define the following terms:

Coupling ratio (%):

43

4

PP

P

Coupling loss (dB):

43

4log104 ,

43

3log103

PP

PPort

Excess loss (dB):

Thermal stability and Polarisation: The max change in coupling ratio through all specified temperature ranges and/or polarisation orientations.

Insertion loss (dB): Coupling loss + Excess loss + Polarisation effects (only single mode)

Uniformity (dB): Max insertion loss – Min insertion loss

Directivity (dB):

4.2.2 Wavelength Division Multiplexers – WDMs

Figure 7: The ports of a 1310/1550 WDM

Isolation (dB): The optical power separation between the two wavelengths, assuming the input power is the same at the two wavelengths.

Insertion loss (dB): Excess loss + Coupling loss at 1310 nm and 1550 nm.

Directivity (dB): The same as defined for the coupler in section 5.1.

5 Laser safety precautions

These are guidelines to limit hazards from laser exposure.

All the available EO units in the Flashlink range include a laser. Therefore this note on laser safety should be read thoroughly.

The lasers emit light at wavelengths from 1270nm up to 1610nm. This means that the human eye cannot see the beam, and the blink reflex cannot protect the eye. (The human eye can see light between 400 nm to 700 nm).

A laser beam can be harmful to the human eye (depending on laser power and exposure time). Therefore:

Be careful when connecting / disconnecting fibre pigtails (ends).

Never look directly into the pigtail of the laser/fibre.

Never use microscopes, magnifying glasses or eye loupes to look into a fibre end.

Use laser safety goggles blocking light at 1310 nm and at 1550 nm

Instruments exist to verify light output power: Power meters, IR-cards etc.

Flashlink features:

The FR-2RU-10-2 is classified as Class 1 laser product according to EN 60 825-1:94/A11:96, and CFR Ch1 (1997) Part 1040.10.

If the front panel is removed, the FR-2RU-10-2 is classified as Class 1 laser product according to EN 60 825-1:94/A11:96, and class IIIb according to CFR Ch1 (1997) Part 1040.10.

Maximum output power1: 5 mW

Operating wavelengths: > 1270 nm

1 Max power is for safety analysis only and does not represent device performance.
