"To the Friends of the Children Once more the Kentucky Child ren's Home S ciety is making an appeal to the Christian people of the State to open their homes and hearts to its "little citizens - ', to, the hoys and gfrls, who in a few years will be men and women. Our home is now crowded be- yond its capacity, but wben-a couuty judge writes to us of child- ren who are neglected and home less this freezing weather, what are we to do but say. "Send them to us"? However, we have about reached the portit where we will be compelled to say. "Do not send them to us, we cannot take any more," unless ihe kinahearted, generous people ol the State come to our aid by opening their homes At the present lime, we have in the Receiving Hoqie two hundred and thirteen children, ranging in ages from a month to sixteen years. Many of these are brigbl, interesting boys and girls, sound every way. but we also have some who are haudicapped by be ng slightly defective in some way ind this latter class need love and sympathy much more than tbe perfectly normal child. We have found in' our many pears of exp«rience that the besi results-come from the placements the little children--"Suffer the little children", as they are then at an age when lasting Impressions can be made, and their characters n be most'easily moulded. Out in 1 be State, are . a great many' rnorj} children, waiting to ; to oqr Receiving Home. So by taking^ child from us into your family, you are doing a double kindness—a kindness to the child vou take into your own home, to l^ve and to be loved in return, and a kindness to the little unfortunates, without a home, waiting to come to us. If you are ' interested in the children of out; State, kindly write to tne Kentucky Children's Horn" Society. 1686 Baxter Ave., Louis vllle, Ky. and the' superintendent will be more than glad- to take the matter up with you." The Damm family of world fame b^<( fair to lose its renown by dis- covery of the Hell family in the of Farrell, built by the Unit- ed States Steele Corporation. Members of t h e Hell family are not averse to using their name in a business way.' Thi head of the family, Conrad Hell, an ice.creani manufacturer, has signs reading "Go to Hell for icecreams'' scattered throughout the city. Another sign reads "Ice cream from Hell isgubranteed pure and cooling."— Harrodsburg (Ky.) Herald. my reasons for same are as. fol- lows: , I was opposed io the proposed issueof 1913 because , t b e sum callep for was too large and all of same would have been Bell coun- ty's obligation. "In my opin, ion at that time, that obliga- tion would have become burden some to tbe people and further, the roads that -tdiiid or would have been built would not have justified the expenditure of thafc amount. I am for the present proposed bond issue: 1. Because the amount to be voted on in the present proposed bond issue is only onelialf u* much as tte proposed issue ol 1918; and in addition to that there have since been la vs enacted by the Sttlte of Kentucky by which the State agrees 19 p a y one-ball of whatever sum is spent by each; of tbe counties in .nbis State. we vote for $250,000.00 in bonds ^ lci P les of Christianity and the duties of church members and such kindred subjects, has re- the State proposes to pay one-half of t h e amount, or $125,000.10. leaving B»ll county to pay only $125,000.00. This sum, borne equally by tbe State and county, as just explained, will build all the macadam roads Bell county needs at this time, and then leave a greutorsura of the present road fund tojimprove our dirt roads. TShe $250,006.00 that bnild these toads will be paid by the property holders of this county, and they that have small holdings will pay small amounts, and they that hive large holdings will pay large amounts. The cost does not reach the poorer or laboring class of this count, q&.each m a n o r housekeeper is entitled to a $260.- 00 exemption, and nothing can be added, to the Poll Tax Payer. In my opinion, it will be a great ad- vantage to tbe laboring man, as it will help to bring prosperity to the county, now so much needed, and it will bridge us over these hard, tjmes until tbe financial af- faire of the county rest on a more olid foundation. 3. Every dollar of tbe amount will be spent in Bell county except such amounts as may be sent away to purchase bridges or ma- chinery, and as the amount will be practically all expended for labor, I C A N S E E N O .REASON W H Y ' T H E L A B O R I N G CLASS OF PEOPLE SHOULD NOT UNIT/ IN A VOTE OF THIS KIND. A S T H E M O N E Y W I L L P A S J S T H f t U T H E I R t ^ A N D S . 4. To delay taking the benefit of the btate Aid would mean that we are to help all the other coun- ties ol this Stale build their roads, WHILE WE KEBPON WADING THE MUD. Thislaw toay be in affect fo>*'lhe uexl 100 years and all that time we shall be paying in taxes to tbe State to help the other counties build their roads. Suppose we postpone our building roads tor 20 or. 25 .years, by (hat time we sjiail be - behind all the' other counties just that leugthof time. CAN WE AFFORD IT? 1 think not. We should act promptly and get in on the Vfirst floor;" lor by being one of the first, we may be able to get in ahead of a great.I many o f t h e other counties of Kentucky, and it tiay be that we shall secure a great sum from tbe State before the other eountier awake t o t h e fact that they sre helping us bnild our roads. , •5. I a m receiving quite a num- ber of letters from different parts of t b ? county, which look distress- i n g y T h e people are asking for help, and nodoubi they are suffer- ing and need-help. If no change takes place, I aai looking for the situation to get worse -during the •pringiqiqotni, a n d 1 a m particu lirly anxious to get the bond issue, through and hopd'that we can get the work started at an ear'y d a e . and:relieve the situation. | Votfc for the b*td issue while ; in get tbe .benefitof the 8tMe and helpswC'N pibsperlty in cently been started, under the leadership of Rev.
