Lake Grace community is 100 years old and we are celebrating! Five colourful street banners commemorating Lake Grace 100 Years are installed in the main street to make known this milestone. A year of celebrations is planned. The centennial year will commence with a family fun day at Lake Grace swimming pool following the annual Lions Club Breakfast. The day‘s activities will include traditional games and races, and pool activities for children and adults. Local bush poet Pat O‘Neill will perform a new poem - ‗Lake Grace 100 Years‘. Bring along a picnic lunch (barbeques will be available) to make a day of it. Displays include a mystery objects table - you are invited to bring an old mystery object or artefact for people to identify its purpose and origin. Specially commissioned centenary medallions and commemorative calendars will be on sale. Locals can also nominate for A Day in the Life, a

Editorial Welcome to our first edition of the Links for 2011. I hope everyone had a great break and that the New Year has

been kind to you. Enjoy the read! Local history articles will be included in each of the papers for 2011, we will need YOUR help for this. We have

25 papers for 2011 and we would like to include at least one article on a local organisation and one article on a local business in each edition. For this paper we have focused on SBM and ourselves. The articles can be half a page or two pages, it comes down to how much information we have at hand. If you would like your group or business included then please give me a call at the Resource Centre. We can either write it for you (for this we will need you to provide us with information) or you can write it up yourself. If we don‘t get any takers we will be stalking!!

We have been given the opportunity to host a Myer Briggs workshop, these are excellent and very helpful in understanding different personalities and is indicative of how different personalities contribute in different ways. I attended one of these workshops in Williams a couple of years ago and I would highly recommend it; I must confess I was sceptical about it at the time (and busy hoping we didn‘t have to do role playing) but I am now a convert. This two day workshop will be held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April and is free to any volunteers

involved with the CRC. Unfortunately there will be a charge of $200 per head for corporate bodies, but if you are interested please ring and discuss with me. The CRC will be revamping our membership system and looking at ways in which we can offer more services for our members. We will have more information in the next Link. We are looking for more numbers for our MYOB course (look left). Please give me a ring if you‘re interested. Lake Grace CRC will be running some short courses over the next couple of months (ie. Using your thumb drive and downloading your photos). Please book your place. These courses will go ahead regardless of numbers. We will also be running some longer workshops (up to 3 hours) on Publisher, Word, Outlook and Photoshop for beginners. Will organise dates for these over the next fortnight. If you‘re looking to purchase a Centenary Calendar the Lake Grace Community Resource Centre has some available ($15). We also have available copies of the Pingrup photo book ($45), Far Site and Neville Dunham‘s ‗I Remember‘. We have recently purchased some more rather ‗speccy‘ equipment. Amongst this was a document scanner that has the capability to scan your document and save it as a word document; giving you the option of making alterations or updating. So if you have had your computer crash and you only have hard copies of your docs, we can help! Don‘t forget the photo competition, the subject is ‗Holidays‘ and the competition closes at 4pm on Friday 11th March.

Mr and Mrs Ivan and Barbara Fleay along with Don and Judy and family; Sally and Rex and family; Pam and family and Eric would like

to sincerely thank all those who sent cards, offered their condolences and attended the

funeral of our beloved Reg (Runty). A special thank you must go to Margie Ward,

Chris Carruthers, Steve Hunt, Pat O’Neill, Bomb (Ron) Pelham, Tom O’Neill, Brian Kimber and Vanessa Stone plus all the great staff at the

Club and at the Hospital. Last but not least thank you to all the wonderful ladies that did the catering so close to Christmas.

It is truly appreciated. Thank you from the Fleay families.

Royal Flying Doctor Fund Raising Kevin and Jean Seaman have continued their alliance with the Royal Flying Doctor Service by organising a sausage sizzle to be held every lunch time during the Vacation Swimming lessons held at the Lake Grace swimming pool in December. A big thanks must go out to Wayne and Lynda Trawinski, Caryn Kirk and Lew Franich for ably assisting in the cooking. 385 sausages were sold over the 7 days of lessons raising $454. Due to the cool conditions over some

days of the lessons, the swimmers as well as the spectators really enjoyed something to fill and warm their tummies. Thanks again from the Flying Doctors Fund Raising Committee and a special thank you to butchers, Dawn and Alex, for not only putting up with their worst nightmare (a daily visit from Kevin) but for helping in more ways than one.

Happy Anniversary 25th January - Ollie & Lucy Farrelly

Congratulations to Sarah Allen and Kevin Naisbitt on the arrival of their baby boy, Tate Edward on the 5th January. Tate weighed in at 7lb and is a welcome little brother for Griffin.

Congratulations to Holly Mathews and Steven Korosec on the birth of Winter Rose on 25th December at 8.03pm. Winter weighed 6lb 10 oz and was a wonderful Christmas present for Holly and Steven.

Sometimes you buy items, then want to take them back. Whether you have a legal right to do so depends on the circumstances.

You have a legal right to a 'remedy' when the item:

has a fault you didn't detect when you bought it;

isn't the same as described by the sales staff or in advertising; or

is not suitable for the purpose for which it was bought for example, you are sold software that is not compatible with your computer.

What settlement you receive when you take the goods back depends on what is fair and reasonable. That means you might have to negotiate whether your particular 'remedy' is a refund, replacement, credit note or, in the case of broken items, repair work done.

If you are not satisfied with a trader's offer, you can contact the department for assistance or go straight to the Magistrate's Court, which will make a decision binding on both parties. A remedy by the court could include compensation for any transport, travel or freight charges, legal costs, loss of the use of the product and even loss of time.

When you can't take things back Businesses don't

have to give refunds if you:

have changed your mind about the goods or decided you don't like them any more;

have since found you can buy them cheaper elsewhere; or

saw the goods before purchasing them and should have spotted any obvious faults.

Retailers have adopted liberal refund policies. Put simply, they want your business and are prepared to exchange goods or offer credit notes as long as they make a sale. Shops with such policies are worth considering when you are buying items.

'No refunds' signs are illegal and cannot be displayed by shops. It is an offence to imply that a consumer has no right to a refund under any circumstances. Even if such signs are on display, you still have the legal rights outlined on the previous page.

'No refunds' signs For those shopkeepers who want to display them, free

'Our refund policy' signs are available from the

Department of Commerce, Consumer Protection

Division.

Reginald Ivan Fleay was born on September 24th 1952 at Lake Grace Hospital. He was the first of five children to Ivan and Barbara Fleay. Reg was educated at Pingaring School for 7 years before going to Narrogin High School for the next 3 years followed by 2 years at Narrogin Agriculture Farm where he was a prefect. Nicknamed after his Uncle, Runty returned to the family farm at Pingaring for two and a half years helping at seeding and harvest times. In between these times, he worked in shearing teams. Reg‘s twin sisters, Pam and Sally have been remembering some fun times with Reg during this time. They were in grade 7 when he first came home from high school. They remember hours and hours spent playing table tennis, cricket and football. Football with Reg was him kicking the ball and the girls fetching it. Reg always included them in the farm work and made them feel important, saying to Ivan, ―I should be right if the girls help me‖. The girls loved chasing or catching sheep with Reg because he would make it so much fun. They remember his first ―kill‖ without Dad there. It took him hours. Sally and Pam were giving him a hard time and he was trying to flick the guts all over them. He would let them drive the ute when feeding the sheep and picking mallee roots, even after Sally put her foot down too hard and Reg was somersaulted off the back of the ute. They don‘t remember him ever getting mad. Runty then moved into Lake Grace in 1972. He spent most of the next 20 years working on many farms at seeding and harvest times. Between seasons, Runty

worked in shearing sheds, crutching and muelsing cradles. One afternoon smoko,

when they looked l ike not qui te finishing the shed in time for a cut out, John Griffin, who wa s p r e s s i n g , swapped places with the learner shearer. Runty stacked Griff‘s pen with easy shearing sheep. With the younger shearers trying to keep up with Griff, the shed was finished in no time (anything for a cut out). Runty always had time for the kids and had a knack of knowing how to get them to work with him and still find time to have a kick with the footy. The last ten years or so, he spent working for Mike and Vicki Gray. He especially enjoyed working with the kids and watching them grow up. Runty was never out of work and became well known for his ability and hard work ethic and enjoying a beer after work. There would hardly be a farm in the Lake Grace area that he hasn‘t worked on. Travelling: Runty enjoyed travelling; first leaving Lake Grace on 10th of January 1974 with Pat O‘Neill for a week in Kings Cross where the famous beard began growing. They then headed to New Zealand for 18 months. Runty worked in factories, carted hay, picked spuds and did odd jobs mostly around Christchurch and Darfield. One time when they needed a new fridge, being the resourceful gentlemen that they are, they went to a store and accidently knocked over a fridge and because it was damaged, they then got it for half price. Runty and Pat returned to Lake Grace in July 1975. In May 1976, Pat and Runty headed to Europe, travelling by boat to Singapore then flying to London.

They spent two weeks travelling the UK by car, eight weeks travelling around Europe by bus, then three weeks travelling by train (this included 12,000 miles and 12 Countries). They then went to the Oktober Fest in Germany, no doubt consuming vast quantities of different beers. After this they headed home for a rest. They had been away 5 months. In 1981, Runty, Hunty, Edie and Vicki headed off on a

holiday to Tasmania and the Red Centre. Mike Gray joined them a bit later. After spending a couple of weeks looking around Tasmania, they headed up towards Uluru via Coober Pedy. When they got to Uluru, they immediately set about having a few beers with the locals. Of course, when you go to this area, you have to climb the rock. After what was a very heavy night, they set off to do the climb. It doesn‘t look that difficult, but it was. Edie and Vicki only got a short way up and stopped, Reg and Hunty got about half way and wondered what the hell they were doing there. Anyway, Hunty said to Runty, ―Do you want to keep going?‖ and he gave him that typical look of his and said lets go. We made it to the top signed the book, and got back down safely. This is just another example of the determination and will power Reg had. In 2000, Runty, Kevin Eggers and Bill Willcocks, went on a bus trip to the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Runty was not all that happy with the seats in the bus, so when it came time for a sleep, he laid on the floor between the seats. When they arrived, Runty was never very big on packing a lot of clothes, so every morning he bought a new shirt, unwrapped it and put it on, throwing the old one in the rubbish bin. The last few years, Runty has made many trips to Bali and Phuket with Tom O‘Neill and some other mates. He absolutely loved going over there and had a great time. Sport. Sport played a huge part in Runty‘s life. Runty played football for Lake Grace, playing in the 1970 premiership side as a 17 year old and another premiership in 1982. He also received a contributor award in 1986 for work done around the club. Runty played basketball winning many premierships and trophies. Reg was also an excellent dart player winning 2 singles titles and played in 6 premierships. Runty played tennis when it didn‘t interfere with cricket. He still managed to win 4 singles titles, 4 doubles titles and 2 mixed doubles titles. He had the advantage of being able to swap hands, playing two forehands instead of backhand. One time Runty was playing doubles with Rossco Morton and they were playing in the final the next morning against a much younger pair in Chris and Ashley Carruthers. Runty and Rossco kept the young ones up at the Sportsmans Club until stumps. The plan was working until Chris and Ashley got over their hangovers by the 3rd set and won.

Runty started playing bowls a few years ago and has won 2 league titles in that time. Many years ago, a young Runty went to Safety Bay Bowls Carnival. Not quite knowing the rules, he was asked by skipper Griff, to have a drive. Runty turned the bowl on its side and hurled it down the green for all to watch it bounce down the green. I don‘t think Griff asked him to drive again. Runty started playing Cricket for Pingaring aged 11 until he was 20. He then played over 300 games for the Lake Grace Cricket Club and was a member of the 1987/88 Premiership side. Runty was President for 3 years and contributed in many ways off the field including countless busy bees. Always first there and just about last to leave. Reg was also a member of the Lake Grace Cricket Club ―team of the decade‖ three times. He was awarded Life Membership in 1992. Runty wasn‘t only good at sport, he was a good sport. He always played hard to win, but the end result didn‘t matter whether he won or lost. The beer and mateship was still the same. Runty loved to bet on all sports and would often have the unusual bet, like a draw or long odds to make it interesting. Runty‘s life was full of fun and good times with his own sense of humour. He had an uncanny way of mimicking many local characters. He fought his last battle in typical Runty fashion. Refusing to give in until he could fight no more. Many would have liked to and many would have tried, but that famous beard was there to the end.

RIP Runty

The town has lost a legend Runty was his name, This bloke will last forever In the Lake Grace hall of fame. He loved to play his sport His attitude was great, Win or lose it mattered not He was everybody's mate. Runt never found that lady To always call him dear, He worked just like a trojan And loved to have a beer. We went across to Sydney Spent six days at the Cross, That was when his whiskers grew It looked a bit like moss. That beard stayed forever Until his days were through, A handy place for storage To hold a snack or two. We spent some time in Kiwi land Eighteen months in all, Didn't save much money But boy! We had a ball. We ventured off to England Tried to find a job, Thought we'd try a challenge To earn a couple of bob. Jobs were hard to come by The work just wasn't there, So off we went to Europe And looked round everywhere. We had some strife at checkpoints As we travelled round the place, 'Cos Runty's passport photo Had a beardless, baby face. We covered twenty countries And sampled lots of beer, Our vision sometimes cloudy It wasn't always clear. When we came back home again The farmers formed a queue, To get him on their payroll When they had jobs to do. He spent some time at Strevy's For years he worked at Gray's, When working next to Runty You rarely get much praise.

He had a cheeky nature His hide was pretty thick, Runt always had an answer His brain was really quick. Kids all loved to clean his car Need I tell you more, They'd find half Runty's wages Scattered round the floor. The floor was pretty hard to find It was covered up with trash, Like empty cans and food packs Along with Runty's cash. The Balinese had some appeal Runty liked their style, He'd go there for his holidays And come back with a smile. When he fronts the pearly gate He'll slip a couple of bob, Move St Peter out the way And Runt will take his job. So when we go to heaven And Runty's at the gate, We'll have no trouble getting in He's everybody's mate. By Pat O‟Neill

Use of Shire Standpipes

Scheme water from standpipes is primarily for domestic use and should only be used for stock water when other options are exhausted.

In the last 10 years 2006 was the only year when we recorded above average rainfall (BoM – Lake Grace), 5 years were average and 4 years were below average, 2010 being the driest

at 170mm closely followed by 2009 at 187mm. The South West as a whole has experienced below average rainfall therefore storage is down, if it is all used this summer what are we going to use

next summer? Due to increased use of the Lake Grace and North Lake Grace standpipes, the Water Corp has

deemed it necessary to restrict the flow from these standpipes. If water supply to townsites is compromised, the Water Corp will enforce further standpipe restrictions. Who is paying for the standpipe water………………………..YOU are, the rate payer! (The Shire is billed by the Water Corp for this usage) Current price per kilolitre (band1 non-residential) 128.7cents, rising to 180.5cents over the next

few years. Stock water can be accessed from; Dingo Rock – standpipe/tank on Biddy/Camm Rd

14 mile dam – Shire to install pump temporarily

Tommy’s dam – approx 1/3 full A “Water Deficiency” declaration will not be made whilst there is still water in these dams! Rebates of up to $15,750 are available from the Department of Water to assist in the planning and development of on-farm water supplies. For more information:- Free call 1800 780 300

SBM, currently owned by Brett and Sonya McKenney, opened its doors as a tyre dealership in 1986. In the 1960‘s the premises were owned by Bob Anderson who ran a superspreading and freight business before Gordon McWilliam brought him out in the late 1960‘s early 1970‘s. Macca (Gordon) and Shippy (Oriel) ran the business for many years, living in Bennett street and raising their four children; Barbara, Lindsay, Brett and Rosie.

When Beaurepaires closed down in 1986 (they were situated where Neu-Tech is) Gordon‘s son-in-law, Shane de Souza and daughter Barbara, could see an opportunity for a tyre dealership in Lake Grace. SBM was born. The name is derived from Shane, Barbara and Macca. Ironically the current owners share the same initials.

Shane and Barbara ran the tyre shop while Gordon continued to super spread and transport stock, fertiliser and general goods. In 1992 Shane and Barbara relocated to Rockingham and Brett McWilliam took over the running of the business. Meanwhile in 1997 Macca and Shippy had decided to take some time out and headed around Australia.

Sadly Brett had an accident in August of 1999

which resulted in him being unable to continue running the business. Jason and Penny Willcocks leased SBM, running the business for 6 months before purchasing it in early 2000. With Jason‘s mechanical qualifications, SBM Tyres became SBM Tyres and Mechanical.

After more than nine years of running SBM, Jason and Penny sold to McKenney‘s on 1st September 2009. Brett and Sonia came to Lake Grace from up north with their daughter Ellanore and have been running SBM for nearly 18 months with the able assistance of their mechanic Andrew Lewis.

From the CEO’s Desk GP Update — Locum from 2 February 2011

A locum through the Southern Regional Medical Group (SRMG) will commence on 2 February 2011. The locum will be based in Lake Grace and will be available for on-call at the hospital. In the meantime, the Shire and SRMG are getting the practice ready for the locum including

setting up the computers and electronic records.

Meeting with the Deputy Premier (Minister for Health)

The Shire President — Cr Walker and I met with the Minister for Health on Tuesday 11 January 2011. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss with the Minister the SRMG proposal and to seek further support for the Shire of Lake Grace regarding GPs and primary health care

services.

The Minister responded that he has put forward a budget submission for a new central network (hub and spoke) model to be rolled out for the provision of GPs in regional WA. This includes the provision of additional salaried GPs in key regional centres supported by nurse practitioners and telehealth. In hand with this will be major infrastructure upgrades including key works at the Lake Grace hospital (either a new hospital or substantial remodelling of the existing

structure).

The central network model would cover the Shire from Narrogin with GPs on a drive in drive out basis to Lake Grace for 3 — 4 days a week. In response both Cr Walker and I said that we were concerned with how long this would take to implement due to problems associated with sourcing GPs and nurse practitioners. The Shire keeps coming back to the SRMG fly in fly out model as there is a commitment in place to provide GP and primary health care right now. The Minister said he was flexible and that Shire‘s proposal and his were very similar. Accordingly

he offered the Shire $50,000 towards the $100,000 per year required to fund the SRMG model.

Water — Ovals Lake Grace

With the last rain fall the Shire was able to harvest a reasonable amount from the CBH run-off. In hand with this, Watercorp has now agreed that the Shire can take up to 15,000m3 of water at

a reasonable cost.

Water — Ovals Newdegate

Also with the last rain, I determined that it was safe to start using the Newdegate CBH Dam water (4,000m3). We have treated the water and at the suggestion of Ashley McDonald, I have agreed for the water to be pumped straight to the Recreation Centre tanks. In the event of further rain the Shire will pump the remaining CBH dam water to the community dam so that it

will not be contaminated by the overflow from the sewerage ponds.

Lake Grace Pool Goss

The Swim to Rottnest Island kicked off to a great start on December 1st. We have 19 people registered and a handful of these are going great guns. Kevin Seaman is our oldest participant and at 69 years of age is putting the others in the shade. By swimming in the early morning and again in the afternoon, Kevin was the first to reach Rotto, by 16th December and the first to return to the mainland, which means he has swum 800 laps of the pool! Well done, Kev.

Wayne and Luke (father and son team) have also excelled and both reached Rotto on the 24th December and are now on their way back. The competition is fierce!! Cobi reached Rotto on the 30th December and is well on her way back. Deidre is almost there! Fantastic effort everyone! We seem to have lost a few (maybe due to currents and sharks)! Come on kids! Lots have registered, but the oldies are putting you all to shame. You still have lots of time (until 18 th March) to finish.

What else is happening at the pool? On Wednesday, 26 January – we have Australia Day. The

Lions Club will be there in full swing cooking a wonderful breakfast for everyone. This will be followed by the Citizenship Awards and then….. the launch of the 100 years celebrations for Lake Grace. Bring along a picnic lunch and enjoy the bush poetry, traditional races and games, etc. Entry to the pool is free until lunch time on this day.

In mid February (date to be decided and weather permitting) a Seniors Evening is on at the pool. There

will be a sausage sizzle, old time music on the Jukebox and other surprise activities. (Could be a movie, games, etc – swimming activities only if you want to). Just a good fun night to get together and meet up. All those aged 60 years young and over are invited to attend. Primary Interm Swimming will commence Monday 7th February. Entry fee for students is $1 for

Interm Swimming Lessons.

Also in February, we will again hold the annual Royal Flying Doctor fundraiser. This is a great fun day

with lots of activities for young and old. March will also be a great month with a film night planned for families, Harmony Day and a Pool and Pizza night for the teens. We‘ll keep you posted as to dates and details in later Lakes Link News.

We welcome Mr Harold Vanderplas as our new Manager of Community Services.

He brings with him a wealth of experience, having served in different community service professional capacities, both here in Western Australia, Canada and

Kenya. Having lived in different shires and municipalities across the globe, community development and economic development is where it‘s at for him. He is excited to be part of the management team of the Shire that is most passionate about serving the community and looking beyond in mobilizing the vision for the Strategic Plan for the whole of the Shire. ―‘It takes a village to raise a child‘ and so we all have a key role to play‖ he says ―in their education and development‖. He says: ―Having been raised in what was then the small town of Armadale, it‘s most interesting to see how towns too, grow

and become of age. It‘s all about harnessing the voices of the community and translating those voices into action‖.

eheadspace provides free, professional and confidential mental health support online to young people in the drought affected areas of Western Australia. headspace chief executive Chris Tanti said eheadspace engages young people ‗in a space they are comfortable with,‘ at a time and place that suits them. ―Young people can communicate anonymously, we want to encourage young people who might be worried about seeking help to contact eheadspace,‖ Mr Tanti said. ―eheadspace is accessible, bringing help to young people wherever they are, at no cost to them. This is particularly important for young people that find it hard to access specialist services in rural and remote areas,‖ he said. eheadspace is available seven days a week from 1pm to 9pm and is useful for young people who:

Want to chat about what‘s going on in their life.

Might want some advice.

Are concerned about the thoughts and feelings they have.

Want information about mental health.

Are worried that they might be depressed or anxious.

Are feeling isolated or alone.

Are worried about drugs or alcohol.

Are concerned about a friend or a family member.

Feel like they might need a bit more support. eheadspace is a pilot initiative targeting several regional centres and remote communities in Western Australia. It covers 67 local government areas where an estimated 35,000 young people may be dealing with mental health difficulties. Young people who live outside of these areas will not be turned away. eheadspace is delivered by headspace and the Australian Government in partnership with the Western Australian Government as part of a series of drought reform measures. headspace hopes to expand this service to make it available nationally. Doesn‘t time fly. Here we are ready for another absorbing dash at quips quotes and anecdotes.

Along the line of quotes, if you were as lucky as me and were blessed with a good, old Dad, who always had the ability to impress with the right words at the right time, to help me through the days.

So here are some of the quotes my Dad taught to me:

―Don‘t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do‖.

―Pride makes us do things well, Love makes us do them to perfection‖.

―The harder you work, the luckier you get‖.

―The secret is to become wise before you get old‖.

―When an old person dies, a library is lost‖.

―Regardless of what company you work for, never forget the most important product you‘re selling is yourself‖.

―What matters most is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog‖.

And last but not least-

―If your life is free of failure, you are not taking enough risks‖.

So you see, Dad‘s always seem to have the right handle on things to make life liveable. I hope you were as lucky as me to get a Dad with the wisdom to help you through your track in life. Thanks Dad.

In Sydney she was Rhonda She was Patsy out in Perth In Brisbane she was Brenda The sweetest girl on Earth In Wagga she was Wendy The pick of the bunch But down on his expenses She was Petrol, Oil and Lunch!

Have you heard the one about the golfer who fell

overboard from a Sitmar cruise and finally drifted up on shore of a tropical island. He was finally revived by a beautiful native girl. She took him to her hut where she supplied him with food, then she produced a bottle of scotch from a crate, which had drifted up on the beach. Then she said, ―Would you like to play around with me?‖ The golfer was astonished. ―Don‘t tell me you have got a set of golf clubs too?‖.

They are a funny mob those golfers. They play the game to get exercise then they desperately try to improve their game.

Result = Less strokes =Less walking + Less exercise

But then they do quite a bit of weight lifting at the bar afterward, don‘t they. They lift, they wait, then lift, they wait, then lift and those pots do weigh a bit.

Does this ring a bell?

Whose Job is it?

This is a story about four people named, Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but, Nobody did it. Somebody got very angry about that , because it was Everybody‘s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but, Nobody, realised that Everybody blamed Somebody, when, Nobody did what Anybody could have done. Pretty true don‟t you think.

Had the occasion over the Christmas break to go to Perth to share Christmas cheers with the relations. The thing that struck me while driving was how is one supposed to concentrate on driving and also read all the road sign instruction notices? Solution to problem, wife reads signs while husband concentrates on the road and traffic.

But this was not the worst of it. No matter what house we went to we found them to have security lights and doors, some barred windows. Dead locks on the doors and instruction from the owner. Make sure you lock your cars and lock all the doors and windows before going to retire for the night. Give me the country life anytime. But it did remind me of a poem written by Les Mellett asking the pertinent question. Who are the prisoners?

WHO ARE THE PRISONERS ? Bars on the windows And padlocks on the door Steel rods in the ceiling And a solid concrete floor Alarm bells, and a camera Mounted on the razor wire Security's a premium, where freedom's the desire Do you think that sounds like prison Wherein criminals reside

Where society's protected From the villains locked inside A place where only outcasts go To help them mend their ways And contemplate their freedom as they while away their days Ah no, you could be fooled by that Descriptions can mislead 'Tis not a prison I describe For locking up bad seeds It's just a House, on any street A suburban fortress now And those inside, who've done no wrong, are prisoners somehow Their freedom's held to ransom Their possessions are the prize And the thieves see little difference Thru the greed that clouds their eyes They'll steal your car, or trash your house And should you defend what you own Your life could be in the balance, as history has shown Better stay within your fortress, friend Society has changed And justice has gone on holidays While the laws are re-arranged

The Lake Grace Community Resource Centre (formerly Lake Grace Telecentre) came into the world on the 11th July 1994 when its parent body at the time, the Lake Grace Development Association, moved a motion to form a subcommittee to be known as the Lakes Link Telecentre. Members of this steering committee, which was setup on the 8th August 1994, were Dennis Kenworthy, Steve Curtin, Allan Marshall and Maria Taylor. An initial payment of $13,600 was sent on the 15th August 1994 to the Lakes Link Telecentre from the Commonwealth department of Primary Industries and Energy; the department responsible for governing the Commonwealth Government Telecentres program. Further funding came from the Shire of Lake Grace. Lake Grace was the 25th Telecentre in the network. The first cheques written out by the Lake Grace Telecentre were to pay for the advertising for a Coordinator. In September 1994 Barb Murphy, the first Telecentre coordinator, applied for the position, formally starting in January of 1995. The Telecentre‘s first home was generously provided by Murray and Cobi Stanton who allowed the use of the shop that Lake Grace Communications and Computers now currently operates from. Aside from the purchase of equipment the Telecentre needed to sell itself to the community and provide a viable service. In May of 1995 the Lakes Link News, a community newspaper that had been instigated by the local CWA in 1988-1989, was resurrected. Following an initial print run of 50, publication copies had increased to 100 within two months. This paper gave the Lake Grace Telecentre a means of marketing itself, setting itself up to be an indispensable thread within the weave of the Lake Grace community. In 2011 the Lakes Link News is a 34-52 page publication with a print run of 340; subscriptions are sent throughout WA and overseas while some copies are passed through a multitude of households. The Link has become the flagship of the Telecentre. As technology advanced further and internet crept into our lives it became apparent that the building in which the Telecentre was housed was inadequate. A partnership between the Lake Grace Shire, Department of Education and Training and the Telecentre Support Branch (DLGRD) brought the vision of a multipurpose building into the equation. Following negotiations, building was started in 1998 on what would house the Lake Grace Community Library, School Library, Resource Centre and the Lake Grace Telecentre. A seminar room was also included in the plans. With building completed later that year the Telecentre moved in. A formal opening was carried out by Hendy Cowan MLA on 20th August 1999. Upgraded facilities opened up a multitude of opportunities for the Lake Grace Telecentre. Movement into the new building

coincided with Lake Grace accessing a $19,000.00 Lotterywest grant, providing the Telecentre with modern computers, colour printer and a digital camera. Internet, a bank of four computers, seminar room facilities and 24 hour access for members provided our community with facilities that many in the metropolitan area would envy. Our Telecentre (thanks to TSB) has working relationships with Centrelink, Australian Taxation Office and Medicare. TAFE (Technical and Further Education) have been able to provide us with the means of running adult learning courses, while throughout Westlink has been available for public consumption. All of these partnerships provide Lake Grace with necessary funds. In 1999 a partnership was formed with Curtin University; a trial programme was instigated whereupon community members were able to take part in education via video conference. Curtin installed video conferencing equipment at the Lake Grace Telecentre and enrolments were taken for accounting and art classes. Although the accounting programme did not succeed members of the art class went on to gain their certificate III in Art Fundamentals, with two of that class studying for their Bachelor of Arts (Art). This programme is now run statewide. Following increased use of the facilities and gaps in Lake Grace Telecentre‘s technology, grants were accessed to purchase more computers in 2002; increasing the number available to members and walk in customers. In this same year Lake Grace were successful with their first ‗First Click‘ grant, finally we were able to provide free computer education to our local community. First Click grants followed in 2005/06 and 2006/07; and a TSB Equipment grant in 2006 was used to purchase two new staff computers. In 2004 Lake Grace Telecentre was successful in obtaining a Lotterywest grant of $9,350 to put toward the purchase of a new copyprinter to be used to print the ‗Lakes Link News‘. 2003 saw the publication ‗Far Site‘ come to fruition. Far Site documented the story of the 48 women who are featured on the Lake Grace mural. Lake Grace Telecentre provided access to funding, equipment and financial support to the author, Michelle Slarke. With a second round of Lotterywest funding available, Lake Grace was successful in receiving $14,000 in December of 2006. These funds were put toward a colour photocopier, three new computers for members, a new digital camera and various other office equipment. In 2007 Lake Grace became another Telecentre to install a Digital Express photo printing booth. The move proved very successful and has been very convenient to those living within our community or travelling through. Another First Click grant was obtained in early 2008.

Lake Grace Telecentre continues to provide a multitude of workshops ranging from Responsible Service of Alcohol through to Forklift, computing and Office Organisation. Following the floods of 2006 Lake Grace Telecentre took advantage of a full lake and organized Skippers Ticket workshops, over 150 locals took advantage of this. From its early beginnings the Telecentre network battled for funding, Royalties for Regions which was established at the end of 2008 changed all of this. Part of the agreement in Telecentres agreeing to accept Royalties for Regions funding was that they would change their name. For some this was a bone of contention but most realised that the initial name had always been a stumbling block in getting the wider community understanding what we did (many thought Telecentres were telemarketers). The new name and new logo were launched in 2010 along with significant upgrades in equipment and the finances to hire more staff. Lake Grace CRC employed their first trainee, Jayne Argent, in 2010. Although 2011 will mark the 17th year since the Development Association‘s decision to set up a CRC for Lake Grace, it is the 20th anniversary of the CRC Network. S ince the Communi ty Resource Centre came into being there has been an evolution of the services that it offers. The capabilities of technology has grown but the price of attaining this technology has lowered. When the CRC first opened customers would have wanted a photocopy, to send a fax or place an advert in the paper. In 2011 customers are keen to

get their photographs/slides/negatives scanned, want to check their facebook account but are still keen to place an advert in the paper. Seventeen years ago internet was ‗out there‘ but not available in Lake Grace, fax was the main source of quick information delivery. In 2011 many homes have their own printer/fax so are able to do their own photocopies or send off a fax. This attainability of technology hasn‘t meant that the Community Resource Centre‘s are no longer viable, it just means they have to provide a higher quality service and to have technology and skills available that the homeowner simply can‘t match. In 17 years the Lake Grace has had four coordinators, many casual and part time staff, one trainee and a multitude of volunteers serving on both the committee and helping out with the newspaper. In 2010 Lake Grace CRC had 30 volunteers (averaged out the volunteers contribute 12 hours per week), all of whom provided vital support in ensuring the future of the CRC.

In the early 1900s, the West Australian Government was desperate to settle people on the land to bring the country into production. It prepared a small booklet called "For the Western Australian settler" which set out much information about all kinds of terms, regulations, and conditions for settlers wishing to take up land. These booklets were made available to prospective settlers, including people from Great Britain. Information from the booklet induced Mr Robert Carruthers to migrate from Scotland to Australia with his large family. They obtained land at Lake Grace, and about 15 years later he wrote of their experience developing their land. His story was then used in a later volume of the booklet, as a testimony of what could be achieved in Western Australia. EXPERIENCES OF WHEAT FARMERS. (From a departmental pamphlet published in 1925.) The following account of his experiences is supplied by a prosperous wheat farmer : "On the 27th day of May, 1911, I sailed from London with my wife and eleven (11) of a family. My three eldest are girls. The eldest boy was 16 years when we came here, and our youngest child was two and half years. When we arrived at Fremantle we had £73. We rented a house in Subiaco at first and the girls, the eldest boy, and myself took work. In a short time I got 2,000 acres of land at Lake Grace, and after I had been in the country seven weeks, I went up on to the land, taking my eldest boy with me to help me to clear the land and a younger boy to do our cooking. The seven weeks that we had lived in Perth we had saved £25, which made the capital that I started with £98. My wife and the rest of the family remained in Perth for about two months until I got a kind of a house made for them. At that time we were 60 miles from the railway, Dumbleyung being the head of the line. We had to cart stores, chaff, and all that we required from there, including our mail. I might add that I took my wife and the family over that 60 long miles in two spring carts in a burning hot sun, but at last we got home. I would like to state here that I had been farming all my life in Scotland, and when I got the timber off the land I knew how to go about things, but I had never seen any timber or clearing before coming here, and when I got the first look at it, it nearly broke my heart. However, I was here, and there was only one thing to do — make a start on the timber. So Jack and I started (Jack 16 and I 45 years). We started with the lighter stuff and cut down 40 acres, all except the big trees, and there were a lot of them up to three feet across. We could not cut them with an axe, so we used a crosscut saw and sawed them down, but at the end of that time we were getting a bit more used to the work and did all the rest of our clearing with axes.

There was no school for the first year, and all the boys helped with the clearing. The result was that we cut down, burned up, and put in crop the first year on 110 acres. We started clearing in September 25th—finished seeding June 28th, and got a nice little crop. No super was used. We scattered the seed over the land by hand and ploughed it over, another settler and I making up a 5-horse team between us. Next year we got a team and a drill and put the crop properly in with super and we got a good crop, but had to cart it 30 miles to Kukerin. The third year was the drought year, which nearly broke us up, but it did not because we got credit and went on putting in another crop which did well. I put in 350 acres in 1915 without any horse feed, turning the horses out at night to feed themselves on the salt bush or anything they could get. At the start of the seeding time we worked them six hours per day, but at the end of the time they could only work two hours, but we managed to get in 350 acres, and at harvest we cut 100 tons of hay, gristed 40 bags of wheat to supply us with flour for the year, kept seed for next crop, and sold 1,300 bags of wheat. That lifted me right out, and we have done well ever since. Also I must not forget that we got the railway to Lake Grace to take this crop away. At this time my eldest son went to the war. This made it hard for me, but the other boys grew up and they have all stuck to me, and now my four eldest sons have farms of their own. The thing has grown so big now that we can no longer do our own clearing or fencing, because we have so much agricultural work to do. During the last harvest season we had three eight-foot and four six-foot harvesters working all the time and two wagon teams carting the grain into the station. The last two seeding seasons we have been working 56 horses in the teams besides several odd horses and carts, etc. In 1921-1922 we had 2,600 acres under crop. For a long time we were not able to run sheep because the price of fencing material was so high, but I stocked with cattle and one year I made a clear profit of £300 from the cattle; but now that the cost of fencing is a bit easier we have been able to fence and we are running 1,000 sheep and lambs, which paid me very well last year. We have about 30 cattle and 80 head of horses amongst us, £3,000 worth of agricultural machinery, three good dwelling houses, also good stock and machinery sheds. Altogether we hold over 8,000 acres of good land, with just over 5,000 acres cleared. Some of it is under fallow, some pasture, and the remainder under crop. This would be incomplete unless I named a value for the property and assets. So I have just gone over the place and tried to figure it out, and I consider that the property, with stock, machinery, and everything that is on it, is good value for £31,000; but our liabilities would amount to about £5,000, making our assets worth £26,000 clear.

I would like to state that the Agricultural Bank made it possible for me to start, because whilst clearing the land we were able to earn wages to keep the pot boiling until the land produced something. I consider it a very fine institution indeed. I would further like to state that we had booked out passage to Canada before we decided to come to Western Australia, and the thing that made me change my mind and come here was a statement written by a settler in Ballaying I was so much impressed by it that I decided to throw Canada up and try my fortune here, which I am glad to say I have had no cause to regret. My wife and I went home for a trip and in 1921, and came back via Canada. We spent six weeks in Canada,

and I am satisfied that a good living can be got there, but there are not the same opportunities to make a quick rise in Canada that there are in Western Australia. At the same time I do not wish anyone to be misled by the statement, because when they leave England they leave a fine old country where they have everything to their hands, and when they come here the country is new to make. It is no easy job to make a farm out of the forest, but for the right man it is well worth the struggle. If I were 30 years of age and required to do it again I would. It is much better than working for wages in Scotland.‖

Last year Miss Sinclair asked me to give a talk to her class at Lake Grace District High School about the Early History of Lake Grace. I wrote down a brief history, and I have used my talk as a base for recording a more detailed history, as an introduction to our Centenary Year. Though our history is well documented in “Across the Lake” and other writings, “history is never complete”, and I have incorporated some of my findings with those of the early historians. The first explorer to come near Lake Grace was Captain John Roe, our first Surveyor General of Western Australia. He did many explorations venturing out from Perth to discover the nature of our lands. They wanted to know where the good land was, so they could plan settlements in places where people could make a living. They recorded their findings in a diary, and took ‗measurements‘ to record their positions. They had to because they were mostly surrounded by bush and could easily get lost if they didn‘t. These diaries are how we know where they went and what they did. Captain Roe and his party started their expedition in September of 1848. They pulled a cart through the bush with a draft horse, loaded with tents, tools, their cooking utensils and whatever they thought they would need, as well as using pack horses, which were referred to as ‗cattle‘. (Explorers in those days referred to animals as cattle, and the bovine animal as ‗long horned cattle‘!) Captain Roe came down from Karlgarin way, and passed over the area we know as Dingo Rock, where he wrote; “The sharp keen air of that region, and the difficulty we experienced in keeping ourselves warm, especially when exposed to the pelting hail which was frequently brought along by a strong South West wind, induced me to conclude our elevation above sea level could not be less than 1800 or 2000 feet”. With the technology we have today we can easily find the elevation above sea level to be only 900 to 1000 feet for that area, but many of us certainly have experienced the “sharp keen air” and “the pelting hail”. He then veered south easterly passing between where Lake Grace and Newdegate would one day be, to another high rising area we now call Silver Wattle Hill, located on a reserve which butts onto the southern end of the farm of Malcolm and Cathy Kelly. Here again he veered to the south west where he reported, “Descending to the southward through very thick country or over scrubby sandplains we forced our way across an intricate wide valley in latitude 33° 16´ S in which were scattered small pools of fresh water inclining westward in a shallow clay bed, being probably near the source of the Buchanan River, the upper known portion of which was 80 miles distant in the same latitude.” I thought that was interesting, because it shows that the lake system to our west was still unknown, and we have also learnt the waters from this area descend toward the Avon River. He was referring to the area where

children come from on the South Lake Grace school bus. This section of his route took him across the farm of Andrew King, and it has been plotted that a little further on, Roe took his reading on a property of Ian and Sue King, Roe location 2584. Though unimpressed with the country, Captain Roe continued on a course which took him beyond our Shire boundary to Holland Rocks, which he called Gnamma Holes, because of the many aboriginal gnamma holes in the rock. Later in his exploration he discovered and named Mount Madden, also a part of our Shire, as he continued his exploration to Esperance. In 1874 Edward Robinson of Beverly took up a Pastoral Lease, believed to be the farm south of Lake Grace formerly known as ―Beetaloo‖ so named by former owner Stevens, who came from that district in South Australia. Blanchard was a previous lessee, and a further belief, amongst others, was that horses were accommodated there from west of the lake in the ―non working period‖. The waters from a spring were a huge benefit for that purpose. For a number of years the Thorntons worked this farm before purchasing it, and it is now owned by the Taylors. John Cowcher and Charlie Piesse came from Wagin in search of land suitable for a Cattle Station east of the lake almost 15 years later. Though “impressed with the quality of the soil, the grass and splendid saltbush and samphire, discovered there was no hope of getting enough fresh water for stock, so the dream of a Cattle Station “went West”. John Holland also passed through parts of the Shire on his epic journey to ―blaze a trail‖ to Bayleys Rush in 1893, after gold was found there. They came in to the Shire briefly at South Lake Grace and even though they were well prepared and carried water with their supplies on a four wheel dray, were forced to divert towards the gnamma holes, (Holland Rocks) where they found much needed water nearby. They continued their trek on much the same course to Silver Wattle Hill that Roe had come down on, then continued onward to Lake Biddy and beyond. From 1906, there were five Pastoral Leases issued to the North of Lake Grace. Four of them were of 3,000 acres, and another was of 7,000 acres, the fee for lease being £1 per thousand acres each year. It was very convenient that most of them had a soak, which enabled an essential water supply on them, though we don‘t know for sure what they were used for, or even if they were used. Although they were all offered a long tenure of 22 years, within six months or one or two years, they were all reverted back to the Government, because no further rent had been paid. I believe these leases may have been taken out by Sandalwood pullers, as sandalwood grew in those areas, and it had become a major industry and large export earner. Many sandalwood workers operated out of Narrogin and it is most likely where they came from, the railway their

means of transport to port. The first of these leases was taken up by Ernest McCall on 18/4/1906, and his area enveloped the ―King Edward Farm‖ of Greg and Paula Carruthers, and took up parts of the surrounding farms. Greg was able to affirm that, ―Yes, there is a soak, though it has not been any good since the Meckering earthquake‖, and, ―Yes, there is a sandalwood tree remaining‖- one hundred years later! McCall‘s lease expired after he failed to pay the rent the following year, and Michael Brown later took it over in 1908, until he failed to pay the rent in 1909. James Fitt was another who took up two leases in 1906, as well as a couple more leases closer to Narrogin. His operations were further north, where Jules Eggers later took up land, and he is said to have been very familiar with sandalwood. This farm is now owned and worked by Marshall families. There is a land mark ―Jam Hill‖ on the eastern boundary of this lease, which would have also covered other locations in the area. Fitt‘s other lease was further east, in the vicinity of Luther Estate, and joined onto the lease of Edward Hammersley and Albert Shannon, combining into an area of 6,000 acres, once again, absorbing a number of locations taken up later. Hammersley and Shannon also had a 7,000 acres lease at about the ―Jam Patch‖, taken up 27/8/1908, which also would have encroached on a number of the selections which were later taken up. Their leases expired in 1910, when the rent had not been paid for the first half of the year. It is just a thought, but perhaps the sandalwood pullers may have got what they came for in their short tenure of lease, having cleaned the Sandalwood out, or the economics were such that their venture was not worthwhile. Usually, the trees were pulled out, the roots being just as valuable as the wood, so in the short term, there would be nothing left. As the tree requires a ‗host‘ plant, it would be some time before a regeneration. Incidentally, when Captain Roe returned in 1849, from his previously mentioned exploration, he met up with four teams of carters on a track north of the Stirling Range, taking sandalwood to Cape Riche for export to China! In 1907, the first real interest was shown in settlement near Lake Grace, when Mr McMahon chose land. In 1908, the Bennett brothers, Ern and Jack looked at the land and were so impressed with what they saw that they made selections. Mr Ern Bennett chose 1000 acres, surrounded by lake. It must be said that this land was very much better than what Captain Roe saw. Mr Bennett started work on his place, after clearing a track about 65 kilometers to get to his farm, and to cart water for their needs and for their horses. Later in his life, Herbert Horner wrote that in April 1911 Ern Bennett took him to Lake Grace to erect the first building of any kind in the district - it is still standing. He saw the district in its wild state; and also saw the first settlers arrive. Later that year Herbert Horner was brought back again

when a new house was built, the first one in the district. This house still stands, though it has been moved to another farm and is no longer lived in. The land Mr McMahon chose had a good site for a dam, so the Government exchanged it for land opposite the Bennetts, and the White Dam was built there north of the highway, which is located soon after crossing the railway line to the west of Lake Grace. This dam became very important for the settlers, as it supplied their water, and the mail also came to there. It was a convenient location to rest and water the mailman‘s horses, especially as there was not a reliable water supply any further on. It was a popular picnic spot too where people from Kukerin way also joined with the local community for several memorable picnic gatherings. During these years it was allowable that settlers could choose an area of 1,000 acres, to be surveyed later, but sometime in 1910, the Government stopped doing this, and implemented a plan of firstly classifying the land and then surveying suitable locations. Government dams for water supply were also planned as well as roads. A further inducement for the settler was a form of bank assistance, and they called these leases ‗Conditional Purchase‘. To encourage settlement of the vast new lands of Western Australia, the Government prepared a booklet of about 75 pages, entitled ‖The Western Australian Settler‖, with information, setting out conditions, terms, rules, and means by which the Government would give assistance for the would be settler. It would have been available throughout Great Britain, and the Scottish Government even sent out a delegation to Australia, to check out the prospects and validity of the claims. So that would explain why, in 1911, when another 18 blocks of land were allocated at Lake Grace, many of the settlers were people from England and Scotland. A few who still have descendants living on those farms, are Carruthers, Bishop, Slarke and Marshall.

Humour Under the Wagon A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagonload of wheat on the road. The farmer that lived nearby came to investigate. "Hey, Willis," he called out, "forget your troubles for a while and come and have dinner with us. Then I'll help you overturn the wagon." "That's very nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think Dad would like me to." "Aw, come on, son!" the farmer insisted. "Well, OK," the boy finally agreed, "but Dad won't like it." After a hearty dinner, Willis thanked the host. "I feel a lot better now, but I know Dad's going to be real upset." "Don't be silly!" said the neighbour. "By the way, where is he?" "Under the wagon," replied Willis.

Duelling Barbers A new hair salon opened up for business right across the street from the old established hair cutters' place. They put up a big bold sign which read: "WE GIVE SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS!" Not to be outdone, the old Master Barber put up his own sign: "WE FIX SEVEN DOLLAR HAIR CUTS"

Depressed There's this guy in a bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half-an-hour. Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says: "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't see a man crying." "No, it's not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late to my office. My boss, outraged, fires me.‖ "When I leave the building, to go to my car, I found out it was stolen. The police, they say they can do nothing.‖ "I get a cab to return home and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away.‖ "I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar.‖ "And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison."

Beethoven's Ninth The Boston Symphony was performing Beethoven's Ninth. In the piece, there's a long passage of about 20 minutes during which the bass violinists have nothing to do. Rather than sit around the whole time looking stupid, some bassists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door for a quick one. After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them looked at his watch. "Hey! We need to get back!" "No need to panic," said a fellow bassist, "I thought we might need some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conductor's score together with string. It'll take him a few minutes to get it untangled."

A few moments later they staggered back to the concert hall and took their places in the orchestra. About this time, a member of the audience noticed the conductor seemed a bit edgy and said as much to her companion. "Well, of course," said her companion, "Don't you see? It's the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded."

Counterfeiter A counterfeiter decided that the easiest way to pass off his phony $18 bills would be to unload them in some small rural town, so he drove until he found a tiny town with a single general merchandise store. He entered the store, went up to the counter, and handed one of the bogus bills to the man behind the counter. "Could you change this for me, please?" The store clerk looked at the bill for a few seconds then smiled at the man. "Of course I can. Would you prefer two $9 bills or three $6 bills?"

Tie Discipline A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. It fitted under his shirt and was not noticeable at all. On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in school. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work. The classroom became a bit unruly and he admonished them. This happened several times. When he could do work at his desk, the strong breeze from the window made his tie flap annoyingly. He kept rearranging and rearranging the tie as the class raised it's level of unruliness. Finally, becoming disgusted with the wayward tie, he stood up and took a big stapler off his desk and stapled the tie to his chest in several places. Discipline was not a problem from that day forth.

Organic Vegetables The other day, it was my turn to prepare dinner, so I asked my wife to go over to the local market and buy some organic vegetables. She came back rather upset. When I asked her what was wrong, she said, "I don't think I like that produce guy. I went and looked around for your organic vegetables and I couldn't find any. So I asked him where the organic vegetables were." "He didn't know what I was talking about, so I said, 'These vegetables are for my husband. Have they been sprayed with any poisonous chemicals?'" "And he said, 'No, ma'am. You'll have to do that yourself.'"

Criminal Lawyer A man walked into the local Chamber of Commerce of a small town, obviously desperate. Seeing a man at the counter, the stranger asks, "Is there a criminal lawyer in town?" To which the man behind the counter immediately quipped, "Yes, but we haven't been able to prove it yet!"

Last October the Netball Club held its AGM, attended by the biggest crowd in five years (there were 14 people) Thank you to everyone who made an effort to attend, it was great to see some new, and returning faces. The Netball committee for 2011 comprises of President: Amanda Trevenen Secretary: Lauren Duckworth Treasurer: Tineke Conlon Committee: Jemma Swarbrick, Maggie Trevenen, Sarah Graves Nikki Anderton and Pootsy vacated their positions on the committee after three years. They both put in a sterling effort during their time on the committee and will be missed. This season a number of changes will be implemented into the ONA constitution. Most are small and will not affect the way the game is played, I will keep you posted on any changes that affect the game or registration process in the near future.
