Kangaroo

For many people, the Australian outback means only one thing – kangaroos! These marsupials can leap 9 m in a single jump, keep their babies warm in cosy pouches and live in groups known as mobs. Kangaroos and their relatives are the only animals that use hopping as their primary method of travel but they are una-ble to walk backwards! Kangaroos have short, soft coats with powerful legs, tall ears, large feet and a long tail. There are 4 main species of Kangaroo. Red Kangaroos are the largest species and live in central Australia.

Kangaroos generally live in small groups called ‘mobs’ with around 10 females and their Joeys and one or two males. In areas with lots of food there are sometimes huge gatherings of around 1,500 Kangaroos!

Kangaroos are herbivores. They eat grasses and flowering plants. They are able to survive without water in the dry outback for a long time. They get a lot of their water from eating plants.

Kangaroos are active at dawn and dusk or at night, spending the majority of their time foraging for food. A baby kangaroo is called a Joey – they are tiny when they are born (about 2.5 cm long). Their first chal-lenge is to crawl through their mother’s fur to her pouch, where they attach and feed.

Watch this video with an adult and see if you can learn anymore interesting facts about the kangaroo.

Status:

All sea turtles are protected by the

Endangered Species Act, which lists all

species of turtles as endangered except

the loggerhead, which is listed as threat-

ened.

Description:

Marine turtles are one of the earth's most

ancient creatures. There are seven

species of sea turtles. They grow between

91cm to 109cm and weigh between 90kg

to 136kg.

Range:

Sea turtles are found in warm waters

throughout the world and migrate

hundreds of miles between their nesting

and feeding grounds.

Diet:

Sea turtles eat jellyfish, seaweed, crabs,

shrimp, snails, algae and molluscs.

Behaviour:

Sea turtles spend most of their time in the water

as travelling on land is difficult for them. They

come to the shore to lay their eggs.

Lifespan:

Most sea turtles live approximately 15 to 20

years and may live to be 80 years old.

Tasmanian Devils – The Land Cleaners

In cartoons, the Tasmanian devil tears through forests destroying everything in its path. In

real life, though, these animals are small and slow moving. They only weigh 13 to 18

pounds which is about the size of a small dog. Tasmanian devils are marsupials. They live

in only one place in the world – Tasmania which is an island off the coast of Australia.

Tasmanian devils have a fierce reputation. Early settlers in Australia did not like them

because they ate sheep but Tasmanian devils are good because they eat dead animals

and mice which helps keep the land clean. They have very sharp teeth so they can eat

almost the whole of an animal, even its bones! Tasmanian devils are nocturnal so they

hunt for their food during the night.
