WE ARE READY

We demonstrate independence. We comprehend and evaluate complex texts across a range of types and disciplines. We construct effective arguments and convey intricate or multifaceted information. We independently discern a speaker’s key points, request clarification and ask relevant questions.

We build on others’ ideas, articulate our own ideas and confirm they have been understood. We demonstrate command of standard English and know when and where to use it.We acquire and use a wide-ranging vocabulary. We become self-directed learners, effectively seeking out and using resources to help us, including teachers, peers, print and digital reference materials. We make sense of problems and persevere to solve them.We manage academic stress, set goals and monitor progress towards short and long-term goals. We exhibit a growth mindset, leading to positive motivation, hope and optimism. We exercise effective strategies to maintain academic balance.

We value evidence. We cite specific evidence when offering an oral or written interpretation of a text. We use relevant evidence when supporting our own points in writing and speaking, making our reasoning clear to the reader or listener. We constructively evaluate others’ use of evidence while being mindful of diverse points of view.

We collaborate effectively. We are able to work cohesively towards a shared goal or purpose, creating a positive school culture and supporting each other to combine individual strengths to enhance school and classroom community. We are able to cultivate, establish and maintain appropriate relationships.

We think and reason logically. We persevere in solving problems across disciplines by combining essential skills in numeracy, literacy and reasoning. We use appropriate tools responsibly, efficiently, and precisely in our calculations. We can utilize structure and repeated reasoning to compute and reason in various situations, and we evaluate solutions to 21st Century problems through a lens of equity and accuracy. We can defend our reasoning based on evidence and communicate our findings effectively to various audiences.

We respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline. We adapt our communication in relation to audience, task, purpose and discipline. We set and adjust purpose for reading, writing, speaking, listening and language use for the task. We appreciate nuances, such as how the composition of an audience should affect tone when speaking and how the connotations of words affect meaning. We know that different disciplines call for different types of evidence (e.g., documentary evidence in history, experimental evidence in science) and different application of skills in speaking, writing, reading and listening. We take action to improve conditions, viewing ourselves as players in the world and participating reflectively.

We build strong content knowledge. We establish a base of knowledge across a wide range of subject matter by engaging with works of quality and substance. We become proficient in new areas through research and study. We read purposefully and listen attentively to gain both general knowledge and discipline-specific expertise. We refine and share our knowledge through writing and speaking.

We are socially, emotionally and mentally healthy. We are confident in ourselves and in our voices. We are motivated by our clear sense of who we are, what we can achieve and how we can contribute in the world positively. We reach out for support when we need it and we offer support to others when it is needed. We are aware of our emotions and we are mindful of our impulses as we make choices and decisions. We appreciate diversity, value inclusion and seek the participation of everyone around us. We build healthy relationships with others around us based on shared respect and positive intentions.

We use our skills and knowledge to maintain and enhance our physical health. We can achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. We understand the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction. We understand the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on our health. We communicate well to enhance our health and avoid or reduce health risks. We use our decision-making skills and set goals to enhance our health. We advocate for our personal, family, and community health.

We find meaning and purpose through the arts, including dance, music, theatre and visual arts.We communicate at a basic level in the four arts disciplines: dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts.We communicate proficiently in at least one art form, and we can solve artistic problems with insight, reason, and technical proficiency. We develop and present basic analyses of work ofart from structural, historical, and cultural perspectives. We recognize and appreciate exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods. We have a basic understanding of historical develop-ment in the arts disciplines, across the arts as a whole, and within cultures. We relate various arts concepts, skills, and processes within and across disciplines, which includes under-standing the arts in relation to other subject areas and making connections in a variety of settings, in and outside of school.

We use technology and digital media strategically and capably. We navigate the digital world responsibly and are good stewards of digital tools in order to expand our knowledge and experiences, and to improve our lives and the lives of others. We employ technology thoughtfully to create authentic products through the design thinking process, demonstrating mastery of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language use to make an impact on our community. We are empowered to be creative, connecting and integrating what we learn through technology and offline. We are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to our communication goals.

We comprehend as well as critique. We are engaged and open-minded—but discerning — readers and listeners. We work diligently to understand precisely any author’s or speaker’s assumptions and premises, and we assess the veracity of claims and the soundness of their reasoning. We critique the work of others and ourselves in a variety of ways.We are skilled at asking questions about inequity and challenging the status quo. We are passionate about constructing our own knowledge.

We understand other perspectives and cultures. We appreciate that the 21st century classroom and workplace are settings in which people from divergent cultures and who represent diverse experiences and perspectives must learn and work together. We actively seek to understand other perspectives and cultures through reading and listening, and we are able to communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds. We evaluate other points of view critically and constructively. Through reading works of literature, nonfiction, and informational texts representative of a variety of periods, cultures, and worldviews, we can vicariously inhabit worlds and have experiences much different than our own.

We recognize and draw on our own perspective and culture. We investigate the world beyond our immediate environment. We are aware of and can articulate our own cultural worldview. We recognize that the culture and experiences we bring to learning are a key resource. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
