FORTNIGHTLY PUBLICATION — NOVEMBER 17 - 30, 2017 Manor residents have a once-a-year opportunity to cele- brate and remember our wonderful, loyal staff. Gifts to our staff of 172 (including housekeeping) are not allowed… with the exception of the Employee Appreciation Gift Fund. We orally thank and praise our Manor Staff throughout the year, but the Gift Fund adds a tangible endorsement of our gratitude for the many valuable ser- vices provided for us every day. LET’S ALL GIVE AS GENEROUSLY AS WE CAN. On the strong recommendation of our audit and financial advisors, the 2017 Employee Appreciation Gift Fund will be brought back into the Manor and will use the Manor’s tax ID. This will require the withhold- ing of taxes and fees, as required, and will thus reduce the net benefit to the employees. This method is used by most not-for-profit organiza- tions. We hope that we can average $1,500 per resident, or $3,000 per couple, in order to provide a meaningful thank you to our staff. Some residents may not be in a position to give this amount and many others, we hope, can and will give more in support of our deserving Manor staff. This year’s gift fund began at the November 15, 2017 Annual Resi- dents’ Meeting and will end on Friday, December 15, 2017. PLEASE MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO CARMEL VALLEY MANOR, DESIGNATE FOR EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION ON THE LOWER LEFT OF THE CHECK, AND DEPOSIT THE CHECK IN THE BOX AT THE RECEPTION DESK. Donations are confidential, discretionary, and voluntary to a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and are considered deductible. Please verify this with your personal tax consultant. FORTNIGHTLY PUBLICATION — NOVEMBER 17 - 30, 2017

Manor residents have a once-a-year opportunity to cele-

brate and remember our wonderful, loyal staff. Gifts to our staff of 172 (including housekeeping) are not allowed…with the exception of the Employee Appreciation Gift Fund. We orally thank and praise our Manor Staff throughout the year, but the Gift Fund adds a tangible endorsement of our gratitude for the many valuable ser-vices provided for us every day.

LET’S ALL GIVE AS GENEROUSLY AS WE CAN. On the strong recommendation of our audit and financial advisors, the 2017 Employee Appreciation Gift Fund will be brought back into the Manor and will use the Manor’s tax ID. This will require the withhold-ing of taxes and fees, as required, and will thus reduce the net benefit to the employees. This method is used by most not-for-profit organiza-tions. We hope that we can average $1,500 per resident, or $3,000 per couple, in order to provide a meaningful thank you to our staff. Some residents may not be in a position to give this amount and many others, we hope, can and will give more in support of our deserving Manor staff. This year’s gift fund began at the November 15, 2017 Annual Resi-dents’ Meeting and will end on Friday, December 15, 2017.

THE NAMES

The names alone make mystery— Cainnech, Clonard, Aghaboe, Dalriada, Ossory- out of places, people and another time, nothing at all quite ordinary like mine. Wilson, Robert, George and Smith give very little to anyone to conger with. So when it comes to oracles, prophecies, spells and dances, who would dare to sail, much less go seeking the “Whirlpool of the Sea of Brecan,” or settle on the isle of Scarba or move to Fordun if George was your father and you the son?

However, if you were the son of Niali of Nain and your grandfather, Cormac ua-Liathain, you’d go anywhere and get there fine for being in and of such a glorious line.

George M. Wilson, Poet Laureate

Books, books, books….what ever would we do without books? So little knowledge would we have, so little view into the world and customs that abound. To miss out on the love of reading books would be such a sad thing for me. I can remember the books of my early child-hood……The Burgess Bird Book for Children was the favorite of my brother and me. Then, later on, I can re-member sitting on the porch of my friend who lived across the street and reading the afternoon away. Of course, all the Nancy Drew stories. The awakening to romance came with the reading of Captain From Castile when I was not yet in high school. Then came Lord Jim, Rebecca, Wuthering Heights, The Hound of the Basker-villes, The Waste Land, To Kill A Mockingbird. How could one not miss these?

Remembering others that I passed through that have stayed in my memory for so long: Men to Match My Moun-tains, The Jewel in the Crown. Many, wonderful stories and histories: Stilwell and The American Experience in China, 1911–45, Undaunted Courage, Theo-dore White’s In Search of History, The Desert Queen, West With The Night, Out of Africa, and lately, The Alice Net-

work and Red Notice. Then there are those that I think should be required reading in high school or college: The Warmth of Other Suns and If You Can Keep It. Of course, most of Ivan Doig’s books are fun to read. Start with Dancing At The Rascal Fair (and don’t overlook The Sea Runners) and his mentor, Wallace Stegner’s, Angle of Repose.

So many, many wonderful books, and these are just a very few that have stayed in my mind for all these years. If you haven’t read them,

you might try one.

Books!

Make sure your children’s academic, emotional, psychological, mental, spir-itual, physical, nutritional, and social needs are met while being careful not to overstimulate, understimulate, improper-ly medicate, helicopter, or neglect them in a screen-free, processed foods-free, GMO-free, negative energy-free, plastic-

free, body positive, socially conscious, egalitarian but

also authoritative, nurturing but fostering of independ-ence, gentle but not overly permissive, pesticide-free, two-story, multilingual home, preferably in a cul-de-sac with a backyard and 1.5 siblings spaced at least two years apart for proper development; also, don’t forget the coco-nut oil.
