Somewhere, sometime if you have evebeen to a concert, whether you realizet or not there was an army oechnicians there putting the showogether and keeping it running. If the

hey were there, but they were. The roacrew. Most people don't even realizhere is a crew, they are there from th

early morning setting up, through thshow, and late into the night tearing thshow down and putting it back into thrucks so they can get to tomorrow

    show.

Any show out there is going to have itown army of riggers, carpenters, sounand light crews, video crew, securiteam, pyro crew, laser people

production and stage managers, and thband gear or backline crew. All thesepeople work together with the locastagehand crew do an amazing amount o

spent the better part of my adult life ohe road and I loved every day of itowadays they have schools where kid

can learn the basic skills needed to get ob on the road. But when I started ouhese schools either didn't exist, or ihey did I didn't know about them. Bac

hen we all started out working local bagigs, where you learned a little oeverything and everyone did it all. That'where my story starts, the local bars o

    Long Island, New York.

    The First Gig

Having learned the very basics in higschool, which end of the microphone tell into among other things, I realized

knew all there was to know about puttinon a show, how hard could it be? Likmost crew guys I started out as a rocstar wannabe. I played guitar and starte

a band, I was on my way.The town I grew up in was small anhere really werent any clubs as such t

play in. As kids we convinced thowners of the local taverns, gin mills fohe working man, to let us set up in th

corner and play. We were allowed to

charge a small cover which the ba

neighborhood bar called SchultzeTuck Inn , it was a massive buildinwith a four sided bar right by the fron

door, and a couple of pool tables furtheback. Behind that was just a largdarkness, the place was poorly lit anhere was no reason to go beyond th

pool tables. I spent many a Saturdaafternoon as a kid in Schultzes, sippincokes and playing shuffleboard as m

parents drank with their friendsEventually someone ventured into thdarkness at the back of the building anrealized there was a full-size stage there

obody seemed to realize it was thereand the owner couldnt seem tremember why it was there or if it haever been used.

    The Mailing List

Before the days of the internet, the besway for a band to self promote was thave a mailing list. This was a liscompiled by walking around the bar i

between sets with a notebook, anasking people to be on your mailing lisThey would write down their addressand every month we would send out pre- printed postcard with where wwould be for the entire month. Threason this is important is because if yo

cool to tell people you are playing ThQuarterdeck Saloon tomorrow. This idisrespectful of the place you ar

playing because it could impact hibusiness tomorrow.

The mailing list was also a goocebreaker when trawling the bar fo

girls. Every stop was a hit and run wit

no time for small talk. You wouldsimply tell the cute girls they could puheir number down also, if they wanted

Most were flattered and they would

When you had a night off, you would juspull out the old mailing list and starmaking calls to hook up later.

On an off night there were a few of us ahe Baliwick just drinking, playin

pinball and hanging out. The place wa

ike a second home to us and the drinkwere free. There was no band playinhis night and the place was pretty quiet

Sometime that night three girls came inthe bar that none of us recognized. Andhey stood out because they all lookeike witches; I guess a pre-Goth kind o

ook. I dont know why, but Frank tooan instant dislike to them. He asked thbartender what they were drinking, anordered them a round, but asked th

bartender to bring them to him first.

When the bartender dropped off th

his was the seventies and we thought was hilarious. When Frank was done, alhree drinks were sent over, and I am

pretty sure I ended up on the floor froaughing so hard.

    Fear of the Dark

As most of you know, bars are not thbest lit places in the world. Combininhat with alcohol can be dangerous. As

said earlier, in that environment wha

appears to be a rare jewel may actuall

urn out to be a lump of charcoal in thight of day.

Case in point, a girl I will call Lizzie, ahat might have been her name. By now

had become a full time crew guy and habeen wise enough to become the guy thamixes the bands sound. This gave me thstrategic placement of being in th

audience and getting first shot before thband guys could. On this particular nigh was approached by Lizzie, who ha

offered to buy me a drink. She was cut

and buying, the perfect girl. Through thnight we talked and drank and got tknow each other. She was actually pretthot, and I was looking forward t

spending the rest of the evening with her

Having made arrangements to hook uafter we were done loading out, I waanxious to get finished working. Aftehe last set the lights in the bar came u

full and we started packing up whilLizzie waited. With the lights full up hought I noticed something about he

hat wasnt quite right, but I couldnfigure out what.

After all the gear was loaded and wwere getting ready to leave, I realizewhat was different. Lizzie had only oneye, and her fake one kept wanderin

help there. At one point she and a friendgrabbed my arm and tried to physicallpull me out of the bar as the band looke

    on and laughed hysterically.

was no prude then, but I just couldnget past that eye. It seemed that as thnight went on, that eye was wanderinmore and more. Do those things ge

oose the longer you have them in? Alsodo you keep them in when you go tbed? The thought of that thing poppinout or of an empty eye socket terrifie

me. And the thought of an eye patcdidnt help. Who wants to sleep with pirate? The whole thing was way tomuch for me.

The rest of the night is a little foggy, bu

do remember breaking free and runninout of the bar and hiding behind my cauntil the coast was clear. Not my besmoment.

Back then we would always meet at

diner after a gig, to sort of wind downWhen I got to the diner that morning throar of laughter that greeted me wadeafening. Looking back, it was prett

funny; I just didnt think so then.

    The Truck

One particular winter night, when came time to load out, the lock on thback of the truck was frozen solid. W

couldnt get the key in to open the bacup and load our gear. Now this is at fivn the morning and everyone is alreadired and wants to go home.

One trick is to hold a lit lighte

underneath, which didnt work at all thinight. The next idea would be hot waterbut where do you get that at five in thmorning on the sidewalk, when the club

s already closed? Inspiration took holas I stood on the back bumper anurinated on the lock. Disgusting I knowbut these were desperate times. Well

hat didnt work so we tried the lighteagain. Held the lighter under the lock, lt, and the lock erupted into a bi

fireball. I guess I drank a little too muchis particular evening, as my urinurned out to be more flammable tha

gasoline. But the lock did open, missioaccomplished.

    First Time on the Road

Oddly enough, the first time I went ouon the road had nothing to do witmusic. It was with a carnival. When was a kid small towns used to hav

We seemed to hit it off right away, bushe was busy working so I told her that

would come back tomorrow night, whic did. I got there early, before she go

busy so we could hang out and get tknow each other. She was able to take break and I think we got turkey legs fodinner. Sitting in the field at the faireating turkey legs with whatever he

name was, I was in heaven. It was great week; I got to see her a lot. As said, she was older than I was and habeen around the block once or twice.

As the second weekend started windindown we both knew that she would b

moving on. The carnival was heading tPittsburg for a two week run. She woulbe leaving and we would probabl

never see each other again. I went dowo see her one last time and she said tha

we needed to talk. Uh Oh I thought angot ready to run. She must have sense

When we were able to get a minute, shold me that she had talked to the owne

his was back before photo identificatiowas a common practice. The carnivacircuit at that time was filled wit

people working under the table fovarious reasons. Quite a few were on thrun from the law. The carnival was thperfect place to live under the radar.

This trip to a far off land calle

Pittsburg sounded great to me. I hanever been that far from home, so I saiOK. I started working that night, learninhow to dismantle the Tilt-A-Whirl

among other things. Once everything wapacked up and loaded, we headed ouconvoy style on our long drive. Most ohe rides at a carnival actually pack up

and live on their own trailer severything is really mobile. There werfour of us crammed into the oversize cab

of the truck, but that was fine by meSome of the carnies used to ride in thrides that were on trailers. That woulbe illegal now, but back then I donhink anybody cared.

have to admit, getting into Pittsburg thnext day for the set up was excitingThese guys knew all the fairgrounds ohe circuit, and each driver pulled thei

railer to the spot where that ride woulbe set up. It was something to see thesmassive rides spring out of their trailerst was kind of like those kids show

where the robots transform. I waworking with the crew that put togethehe Tilt-A-Whirl, the Scrambler, and the

    Ferris Wheel.

By the end of the first day we were jusabout set up, even though the carnivawasnt to open for a couple of days. Thigave the crew the chance to check ou

he rides and do a little maintenanceThis also gave me a chance to spensome time with my new girlfriend. didnt know where this was going, but

A day or two into the Pittsburg run wwere camped out in the haunted housafter hours. Sleeping arrangements o

he carnival circuit are sparse; yourkind of on your own to find a place tcrash. The haunted house was covereand had ventilation. Not a bad place tspend the night. Late that night we weralking and I guess she decided to ope

up to me. She told me that I wasnt lik

he other guys she had met, I waspecial. On its own that might soundnice, but she followed that witsomething about how she woul

probably never go after me with knife. It was the probably thaconcerned me the most.

later found out she had gotten on th

knife and the police. As I said earlier, a

ot of carnies are on the run from thaw. While I lay there that night I wasn

quite sure what to do. I could tell by hebreathing that she had fallen fast asleep.

t took me two days to hitch hike hom

One of my first forays into the "Bi

case, things did not go as planned anPhil had to leave music to support hi

family. By the time I met him, years hadgone by and he was attempting comeback of sorts.

He had gotten some of the guys from hiold band and put together a new bancalled Splash. He had also called o

some of his old industry contacts to sef there was any interest. By doing thihe band was able to avoid having t

pound it out on the bar circuit to build following and get a record label to looat them. Playing a showcase is when yoplay either a club or a rehearsal spaceand have invited record people there.

Early showcases had gotten Splash manager and a budget to record a demo

ow they were prepping for an industrshowcase that would result in either

recording contract, or the end of thband. The showcase would be at ThRitz in New York City, opening 2 nightsfor Steele Breeze. At the time Steel

Breeze had a sizeable hit with YouDon't Want Me Anymore so the showwere a sellout.

Parts of the prep for the shows werrehearsals at S.I.R. in New York. It wasand still is, a major rehearsal venuwhere you are likely to run into anyonand everyone in the music business. To

me, S.I.R. was exciting. People like Kisand Alice Cooper rehearsed there.Little did I know at the time, but in a fewears I would be back at S.I.R. workin

with both Kiss and the Coop.

The load in at the old Ritz was amazing

The entrance was on the street, but thstage was five flights up, with nelevator. The crew that worked ther

would grab your road cases and ruhem up all five flights. These guys wer

something; some of the cases weighed couple of hundred pounds. They made ook easy. This was also the first gig

ever worked that had stagehands. Uuntil now, at any bar I worked, I was o

my own. As I said, this felt like the biime to me.

disbanded. Once again I was out of gig. So close, but not close enough.

    Getting Serious

After a few years of knocking around thclub circuit setting up big light showssound systems, backdrops and band gea

was exhausted. Back then you woul

get to a club between 4 and 6 p.m. annot get finished until about 5 a.m. Buwhile I was working nights in rock anroll; I also kept a day job. It had beedrummed into me at an early age that yohad to have a job you can count on. Andat this stage rock and roll was far fro

    reliable.

  • 7/21/2019 We Are the Road Crew

    70/609

What this meant was that I would ge

home from a gig usually about six in thmorning and would have to be to worby eight. That left me about an hour ana half to shower and sleep before I hao go do it all over again. Day job fro

eight until five, and then go straight the club until five the next morning.

would do this four to five days a weeand catch up on sleep on Sunday. It wacommon for me to wake up on the toilen my bathroom after a gig. I would ge

home tired, go to use the toilet and falasleep in about a minute. When I woulwake up an hour or so later I would go stand and fall to the floor, as lack o

circulation from sitting so long had puboth my legs to sleep. More than onmorning was spent flapping around o

my bathroom floor, like a fish in thbottom of a boat, until the feeling in megs returned.

At any rate, that is where I was when decided to give up doing shows. I wa

ired and felt I was going nowhere, so walked away. Finally, I had enough restand I had my life back. No more workinall the time. If there has ever been a yea

n my life I have wasted, it was that one was lost, bored and found mysel

gravitating back to the clubs I hawalked away from. I think that doin

shows is somehow in my blood. Therwas no walking away, although I tried.

The boredom I was experiencing led tfrustration, which led to drinking a lomore than I should have. Although in thinstance it may have been a benefit

Even though I missed doing shows, was still gun shy about going back. I ha

been offered gigs here and there, but haalways turned them down. One night went to a club called The Starship tsee a band that was very big at the time

The Kut, and proceeded to drink myselblind. After the first set I ran into an oldfriend, Raymie, who was working fohe band that night. We had worked

nfluence of way too much boozeRaymie recruited me and I agreed. Had been sober I more than likely woulnever have said yes, so I guess my lacof sobriety that night was a blessing idisguise.

Looking back it is amazing that the banhired me. When Raymie took me into thdressing room so they could meet th

his pre conceived notion that anyonhat tours for a living would never b

back to the vaudeville days. Im a bifan of vaudeville, so it was great troam the old theaters. Sometimes ther

would be a stagehand that had worked ahe theater long enough to know some ohe theaters old stories, and would als

know where all the old nooks ancrannies were. These gigs were great fohat reason, but most of the old theater

were hard to load into, as they were no

built for rock and roll. A lot would beon busy main thoroughfares and somhad no way to get the truck close so yohad to dump your gear in the street an

push. I remember one gig where the loan door was one story above the stag

and they used a ramp with a rope anpulley to get the gear to stage level.

One gig on this tour that stands out wawhen we played the Naval Academy aAnnapolis. We had a stage set up in thehall where we would be playing, but thday of the show there was also a boxinournament set up at the far end. All ou

stagehands were cadets at the academand they were some of the besstagehands I have ever seen. They didncare that we were a long haired rock an

hat we had all the supplies we needed. had to make sure everyone had properoad cases so that their gear woul

survive being on the trucks for the tourAlso when you start out a tour like thiou need to make a manifest of all you

gear. That includes all manufacture infoserial numbers, value etc. It is easier tdo this in rehearsals so you can takour time and get it right. A manifest i

used when you tour outside the countrso that customs knows what was yoursThis is also important for insurancpurposes, in case anything happen
