NYC’s Winter Wonderland

Nestled behind the New York Public Library lies Bryant Park: one of the

city’s most visited and stunning outdoor spaces. Upsilon Ventures had

spent years developing a winter haven known as The Pond at Bryant

Park, which attracts more than 3 million visitors each November through

January with ice skating, shopping, food and beverages, and entertain-

ment. So when Upsilon decided to transition to a new service provider

for all of its power needs, it was – understandably – a bit nervous

about the learning curve.

The Kohler Rental design team quickly put these concerns to rest by

it tweaking existing technical plans, moving generators and chillers into

place under strict scheduling requirements, and setting up the project in

just three days. Along with the required equipment, the team also added

two luxury event restrooms, which were connected directly to the park’s

sanitary line. And to ensure everything ran smoothly – especially the ice

rink, which needed to be monitored 24/7 – the team added an on-site

project manager with 24-hour on-call availability.

Comfort on the Green

When players, spectators and vendors take part in the PGA TOUR,

they experience an exceptional event both on and off the green, thanks

in part to Kohler Rental. Today’s tour events extend far beyond the

golf course, including hospitality and merchandise tents, concessions,

first-aid stations and media centers – and Kohler Rental plays a key role

in making sure everything runs smoothly.

Since 2000, Kohler Rental has provided temporary power and climate

control for PGA TOUR World Golf Championships events including

the 2010 Accenture Match Play Championship, CA Championship,

and Bridgestone Invitational. The complex job begins with extensive

planning by Kohler Rental’s seasoned crew of major golf event experts,

who work in collaboration with the PGA TOUR’s own Championship

Management. Once the equipment is in place, Kohler Rental remains

on-site with 24-hour technical support and minute-by-minute monitoring

of all systems during each event.

Brightest Show on Earth

For its 100-year anniversary, Harley-Davidson wanted to put on the

“biggest birthday on the planet” – and the most intense and technically

sophisticated light show anyone had ever seen. Festival Productions

sought to encircle 150,000 revved-up Harley concertgoers with a light

show so large and difficult it had only been attempted once before,

in Budapest. In addition, the client wanted a setup that would be

transparent and would allow 150,000 concertgoers to walk through

the ring of 100 lights and surround the 14 sound-delay towers.

Kohler Rental brought in more than 5500 kW of generator power.

Working from a Kohler Rental design, technicians buried everything:

50,000 feet of cable, including 6,000 feet of trenching with power and

DMX cables buried at two levels to eliminate interference. A KOHLER®

generator was placed in the base of each tower, with isolation trans-

formers used to clean power for sound.
