Atlas Copco Gas and Process compressors
supply big performance in a compact
package – no matter what the application.
More Performance: Our Compressors
11
Atlas Copco Gas and Process compressors drive a wide
variety of industries and are trusted across the globe for
their reliability and efficiency. No matter what process
or application we serve, we always strive to perfect the
equipment we make – and the way we make it.
Solutions for Every Step
As we continue to develop more efficient and effective
compressor technologies, we pay attention to each
aspect of the markets our customers are active in. In
the oil and gas industry, for example, Atlas Copco
Gas and Process supports each link in the value chain,
from the well to the plant.
For example, customers in the fertilizer industry use
integrally-geared Atlas Copco CO2 compressors to
generate high pressures above 200 bar and increase the
efficiency of their operations (20-30% higher compressor
efficiency compared to in-line machines).
Tailored to Customer Needs
We provide both standardized and highly-specified
compressors customized to fit each customer’s
individual process requirements.
All Atlas Copco Gas and Process equipment can
be built to comply with API and other international
standards – and it always meets the maximum
standards for efficiency and reliability we set
for ourselves.

More Efficiency:Our Expanders
13
Solutions
Maximizing efficiency is one of our core goals at
Atlas Copco Gas and Process – and that’s exactly
what our customized expanders do in an array
of applications in oil and gas, the industrial gases
industry, and energy recovery.
Expanding Innovation
We value customer interaction and foster continuous
innovation when developing our machines. For example,
Atlas Copco Gas and Process pioneered the successful
employment of dry gas seals in cryogenic applications.
Our expanders utilize variable inlet guide vanes (IGV),
which adjust to changing process conditions and boost
efficiency, precision, and performance.
Because top dependability is essential for all our
customers, our expanders can be equipped with
active magnetic bearings (AMB), which virtually
eliminate wear-and-tear.
Atlas Copco Quality “Off the Shelf”
While we are experts in tailoring solutions to our
customers’ needs, our offering also includes standardized
machines. Case in point: the ECOTS™ (Expander
Compressor off the Shelf) series of turboexpanders.
Used in gas processing applications, ECOTS™ combines
optimized components and reliable performance “made
by Atlas Copco” with short design and delivery times.

More Cool for Your Process: Industrial GasesAn industry 100 years in the making
needs efficient solutions for the future.
The industrial gases industry remains a key growth area around the
world. It is essential to nearly all industrial sectors – from steel to
semiconductors – where gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen,
and carbon dioxide drive a wide variety of processes.
Atlas Copco Gas and Process has advanced its industrial gases expertise for
decades and offers a variety of efficient machinery, including main air,
booster air, nitrogen, and oxygen compressors, as well as expansion turbines.
Air Separation
Our turbomachinery is used in air separation applications that support
a host of other industries, including the chemical / petrochemical sector,
the steel industry, electronics, Gas to Liquids (GTL) / Syngas / CO,
CO2 compression and microprocessor production.
Carbon Capture Storage
A new and promising technology, Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) reduces the
impact of carbon dioxide on our planet. Instead of being released into the
atmosphere, CO2 is captured directly at the source. It can then be transported
to a predetermined location, either underground or underwater, for safe storage.
Atlas Copco turbocompressors play an important role in the CCS process.

Ramis Gafurov, Director of Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, and Cooling for
Russian chemicals player Kazanorgsintez, has seen it all. In 30 years
on the job, he has traveled to 80 countries and worked with some of the
brightest minds in the industry.
An Ambitious Project
Gafurov is the mastermind behind an ambitious air-separation expansion
needed for Kazanorgsintez’ polyethylene production, which accounts for 38%
of this type of plastic produced in the entire country. Thanks to three Atlas
Copco Gas and Process machines, Gafurov was able to reach his ambitious
goal.
The Right Decision
During the air-separation process, an Atlas Copco
main air compressor / booster air compressor package
helps purify and compress atmospheric air. A two-stage
turboexpander is used to cool and liquefy the air, and
the H-series nitrogen compressor condenses nitrogen
and prepares it for transportation to end users.
“I look at this plant operating now, and I am satisfied
with having made the right decision on the equipment,”
says Gafurov.
Kazanorgsintez’s expansion increased the plant’s pro-
duction of low-pressure polyethylene to 510 000 tons/year
and high-pressure polyethylene to 220 000 tons/year. The
company also boosted the supply of oxygen and nitrogen
for on-site production processes.
Maximum Reliability
Atlas Copco Gas and Process was selected over
international competition because it could offer a
reliable, technically advanced compressor-expander
concept featuring best-in-class efficiency.
“Atlas Copco provides flexibility while always pursuing
the goal of satisfying its customers,” says Gafurov. “We
are pleased with the performance of all three machines.”

More Productivity Around the Clock: Oil and Gas
In an industry that spans oceans and continents, performance and reliability
are the name of the game. Atlas Copco Gas and Process offers customized and
standardized machinery that supports every link in the value chain, maximizing
performance without sacrificing dependability.
Upstream
The beginning of the petroleum process involves the exploration and
production of crude oil and natural gas. It covers all applications from
the well to the product-transportation system. Within this segment,
gas processing, gas treatment, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
applications rely on Atlas Copco Gas and Process turbomachinery.
Midstream
Once crude oil or natural gas have been located and produced, they enter the
crucial midstream sector – pipeline transportation, storage, and processing.
From transportation to storage, we offer decades of experience and expertise
in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), especially for various off-shore solutions.
Downstream
Perhaps the most complex market within the oil-and-gas industry,
“downstream” refers to the refining and marketing processes, as well as all
other subsequent measures of transforming and processing hydrocarbon
products further down the value chain. Atlas Copco Gas and Process machines
support downstream applications such as petrochemical, aromatics, organics,
as well as refinery and power-generation processes.
Atlas Copco Gas and Process equipment reliably
supports every process in the industry – upstream,
midstream, and downstream, on land and at sea.

As recently as 1998, Ras Laffan Industrial City held only one plant and
a minor port. Today, Qatar is the world-leading producer of LNG, and
Ras Laffan, situated 80 kilometers outside of Doha, is an LNG-production
hub for international energy players such as RasGas.
“It is a busy site – extremely busy – and probably one of the largest sites
in terms of machinery anywhere in the world,” says Dr. Basil Wakileh,
Machinery and Reliability Manager at the RasGas site at Ras Laffan.
Rapid Growth
At Ras Laffan, seven RasGas trains pump out approximately
37 million tons of LNG a year. Supporting production
at Ras Laffan are six Atlas Copco expander compressors,
churning away in the two newest trains in RasGas’
presence at Ras Laffan.
The Ras Laffan industrial site has experienced rapid
growth, and RasGas has played a lead role in this
development. Since 2008, the company has expanded
its production facilities from five to seven LNG trains,
boosting the site’s overall LNG production to 37 million
tons per year. The two new trains each produce 7.8 million
tons of LNG annually.
A Strong Partnership RasGas relies on two Atlas Copco expander compressors
to run full-time in each train. A third unit provides
redundancy capability.
The expander compressors are used in the gas treatment
plants and produce the refrigeration needed to remove
the natural gas liquids (NGLs) from the natural gas prior
to converting the remaining lean gas into LNG.
Reliable equipment is crucial to maintain a maximum
of productivity at the facility. Since their installation, the
six machines have been living up to that high standard,
and the partnership between RasGas and Atlas Copco
Gas and Process has proven to be a strong one.
“RasGas has a good relationship with Atlas Copco,”
Dr. Wakileh says. “We have many visits and talk frequently.
We also have good contacts for service.”

Innovation Across Industries
The city’s progressive spirit has a perfect match in Nanjing
Bluestar Chemical New Materials Co. The petrochemical
company produces advanced materials for the aerospace,
automotive, and healthcare industries. It also drives a
wide range of sustainable innovations, such as efficient
coatings for photovoltaic cells and nontoxic silicones.
One of the most enthusiastic voices for Bluestar’s future
belongs to company president Ru Chengjun: “A strong
economy relies on a strong chemicals industry because
the chemicals industry is related to so many things. This
gives us a great opportunity to grow.”
A Trusted Recommendation
In 2009, when Bluestar was looking for a turbomachinery
provider for a new butanediol (BDO) production plant,
Ru Chengjun received a recommendation from a trusted
colleague – and subsequently decided to work with an
Atlas Copco turbocompressor.
BDO, a chemical intermediate used to produce high-
performance polymers, solvents, and fine chemicals, is
a major growth segment in the field. The turbomachinery
Bluestar needed had to be absolutely reliable at all times
to ensure stable and efficient production at the facility.
A Visit to Cologne
After a visit to the Gas and Process headquarters in
Cologne, Ru Chengjun returned to Nanjing deeply
impressed. With an Atlas Copco turbocompressor driving
the process, the Nanjing BDO plant went live in May 2009
and was already running at 100% capacity one month later.
