Vol. 15 No. 7 July 2011 Sharing the Pastors Heart... If you have ever been overseas on a mission trip, you know that sleep is, at times, hard to come by. While there are obvious disadvantages to a lack of sleep, one advantage is the quiet hours to reflect upon what God is doing in your life. A current song on Christian radio (recently sung in our worship service by our friend and seminary-bound student, Ryan Martin) contains the line “what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you’re near.” In China, we had a few sleepless nights. This afforded us the opportunity to think and talk about what God is doing in and through our lives. We spent time talking about personal priorities and evaluating how we fit into God’s plan. I was reminded of the verse in 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 which says, “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.” I found myself asking the question, “What controls me?” While on a mission trip, it is easy to feel assured that it’s the love of Christ that controls me. Maybe the better indicator of what controls me is how I live in the daily routine of life. Notice that Paul ties everything into the gospel the fact that Jesus died for us so that we might live for Him. Without hesitation, I can say that I want to live every day for God’s glory. However, if I am honest, I must admit that every day I fall short of this. According to the context of the passage, Paul includes proclaiming the gospel as an aspect of living for Him. In verse eleven, Paul writes, “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others.” This passage challenges me to view everything through the lens of proclaiming Christ. In the wee hours of the night, maybe God was trying to show me that I need to live everyday like I’m on a mission trip. May we, by God’s grace, live not for ourselves, but for Him who died for us! Vol. 15 No. 7 July 2011

Sharing the Pastors Heart... If you have ever been overseas on a mission trip, you know that sleep is, at times, hard to come by. While there are obvious disadvantages to a lack of sleep, one advantage is the quiet hours to reflect upon what God is doing in your life.

A current song on Christian radio (recently sung in our worship service by our friend and seminary-bound student, Ryan Martin) contains the line “what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you’re near.”

In China, we had a few sleepless nights. This afforded us the opportunity to think and talk about what God is doing in and through our lives. We spent time talking about personal priorities and evaluating how we fit into God’s plan.

I was reminded of the verse in 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 which says, “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.”

I found myself asking the question, “What controls me?” While on a mission trip, it is easy to feel assured that it’s the love of Christ that controls me. Maybe the better indicator of what controls me is how I live in the daily routine of life. Notice that Paul ties everything into the gospel—the fact that Jesus died for us so that we might live for Him.

Without hesitation, I can say that I want to live every day for God’s glory. However, if I am honest, I must admit that every day I fall short of this. According to the context of the passage, Paul includes proclaiming the gospel as an aspect of living for Him. In verse eleven, Paul writes, “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others.”

This passage challenges me to view everything through the lens of proclaiming Christ. In the wee hours of the night, maybe God was trying to show me that I need to live everyday like I’m on a mission trip. May we, by God’s grace, live not for ourselves, but for Him who died for us!

TBC WORSHIP CHOIR – ON SUMMER BREAK The worship choir will begin rehearsing again on Wednesday, August 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Suite. Please pray and consider joining TBC’s music and worship ministry this fall. Childcare is provided and there is no audition required for the choir. Call Dan Thompson at 372-2421, for more information.

GO OUTREACH REPORTS “Had a great visit last night. We talked for about an hour and I think they are very interested in our church. They plan to keep attending at least for the time being and hope to find a Sunday School class soon.” “We talked a lot about God’s grace in her life, how she's gone through some really hard things, but God has always taken care of her. She is very aware that God does exist and is powerfully at work in the world, but I do not know if she has heard or ever understood the gospel. We started talking about adoption and I started to share the gospel with her through talking about how God has adopted believers as his children.” “Great family...had a great visit with them.” These are just a few comments that have been shared by teams who have gone out and visited families in our community through GO Outreach. God has truly blessed this ministry in our church. We have four teams that meet on Monday nights and go out, write letters, and make phone calls to visitors and prospects for our church. In the last 5 months, we have visited in the homes of 46 families, and written letters to over 150 families in Amarillo. Through our Sunday School departments we have also had numerous follow up calls with these same families. If you would like to be a part of this important ministry for the Kingdom, or if you have someone you would like to receive a visit, call Tracy Ward at 372-2421. Please remember to pray for our teams every Monday night as they meet. Tracy J. Ward
